Google map and voice assistant - Samsung Gear S3

Hi,
Love my new gear s3 frontier...sleek and sexy with satisfactory battery life.
My only gripe with it is the HORRIBLE s voice app and pathetic stock map....
Is there anyway to replace these with google maps and google voice?
i.e. 'ok google, navigate home'....then it automatically opens google map or just having the ability to speak out the address would be helpful.
Thanks

Google maps and search do not work on Tizen.

Nope, this is the downside of choosing a gear s3. The watch and ui are better but you don't get full Google integration.

Gear Navigator Standalone seems to be pretty good. Haven't gone through it as I have only had the S3 for a couple days. It is a pay app, think it was like $3.00 or something. I'm in the US.

Type Google maps in the gear store there is a api for Google maps there and brings up Google maps on the watch it needs work tho.

What about Here?

As far as I can see "Here we go does" not send direction arrows to the Gear.
There is a "Here we go" app on the Gear s3 itself but inserting addresses etc is quite a job with those small keys.
So ask Nokia:"Why not send the arrows from the phone app to the gear.
A dealbraker (haha it's free) is also that it does not seem to look in my address book.
Google maps is far superior (Can send info to phone e.g. )but they do not seem to want to do something for Tizen.
So "Directions gear s2" is good solution and it works on my S3.
"Directons for gear s2' to has to be installed on the phone.

I use Here we go on my phone and it sends directions to the Gear S3 frontier perfectly. I use it a lot when driving as I get vibration on my wrist and it's almost always in my line of sight. Try disconnecting and reconnecting your phone and watch.

yep, that did the job.
Thanks.
Is the Here we go app on te gear it selve necessary for doing he job?
I will see, on the long run, which of the two will win.
I have the idea so far that I have to start Directons for gear s2' manually, to see the arrows. Turning the Gear weel gives me ETA.
While Here arrows start directly, after having moved my phone a bit.

I am not sure. I installed it but I think it uses the Gear maps or what's it called as that is powered by Here also.

Use HERE in samsung store

Gear Navigator Companion is definitely worth the small amount of money you pay for it. The phone app is really clean and intuitive and links to the watch quickly and accurately.
It has great map detail and best of all you get the option of using Google Street Map images on the watch if you wish! There's also a navigator clock face that displays the time and turn arrows appear in the centre if you are navigating, so you don't need to go back and forth to check the time etc.
.

I looked throught the API docs for the Tizen wearable SDK with the idea of building an app that would integrate with (or at least pass commands to) Google assistant and Samsung's docs clearly state that the voice API is only available for the mobile development SDK and not the wearable SDK.
So I don't think anybody will be building an app to allow Google assistant integration any time soon

How do you send directions from the phone "Here we Go" app to the Gear S3 Frontier ?

I downloaded Gear navigator (standalone)
At first I thought it was great, that was until I entered my next destination which was 200km away. I got a message saying max distance is 100km.
Why wasn't that in the description? I wouldn't have paid for it had I known that.

I bought this app but on the couple of occassions I've tried it on my S3 Frontier it has not worked at all well to be honest. I could set my destination and route no problem on the phone app, but then when I was walking it did not seem to manage to keep up with where I actually was (I had good clear view above for GPS - no high buildings) so the turn alerts were hopeless as it was not properly tracking my current location. Will try it again but so far am not convinced.

Is it the Gear Navigator Standalone version or Navigator Companion that you are using? They are quite different in use.
I am using the Companion version which doesn't rely solely on the watch GPS.

Sorry for the late reply.
I really don't do anything special. I had Here wego in the phone with offline maps already. I got the s3 so I set it up standard. Installed navigator and here wego apps and it started working automatically. Just need to make sure phone has bluetooth connection to the s3.

Are reminders not possible on Gear S2?

I keep getting an error that my request could not be processed basically every time I use the word "reminder".
Has anyone been able to get reminders to work?
Where are you trying to put in reminders? Or are you just looking for a notification for a calendar event? If you are looking for notifications for Calendar events then just got to Gear Manager -> Notifications -> Manage Notifications and ensure Schedule is checked.

haha I saw that review and it actually doesn't answer my question because he is asking the same question.
"Is this an error that couldn't be processed, or are reminders just not supported? We reached out to a Samsung PR representative a day ago and have yet to hear back. So not only can we not create reminders on the Gear S2, it isn't even clear whether they'resupposed to be*supported or not."
I'm hoping someone on this site has more information.
Try this:

That's the way I do it too.
I've had no issues with receiving reminders, it's creating reminders with S Voice from my Gear S2 that is an issue.
I have reminders set up in Google & they show up on the watch.

Yeah, I tried using S-voice to create a reminder and it was a no go. S-voice just runs into an error. Gizmag described my experience pretty well. Not really a feature I use, but it needs to be fixed.
Well S-Voice got reminders, so I guess it's just an error at this point.

As of about a week ago, I couldn't set a reminder like you described which is exactly why I returned the watch to Best Buy. sure wish it had this feature because it's an awesome piece of hardware.
I set reminders through an app from the Gear Store. It's called My Notes in Gear. I create a reminder on the phone and the watch goes off at the set time. Still wish I can do it directly through the watch through S Voice.

Exactly what it did to me. For me personally, that was the one feature I used the most on Android Wear. If Tizen does not supprt this, I won't ever be purchasing another Samsung/Tizen device. (Not that I won't use Samsung products- just that I won't use Tizen based Samsung products until this feature becomes available.)
WHYYYYYYYY I want reminders!!!!!
Why has this feature not implemented yet? It seems so weird that no one actually can make this work.
The gear s2 has a mic, why cant they make a stand alone app/or integrate it with S voice that u can use with your watch?
Just record your voice command, set it as a reminder on your watch and bam! thats it! Instead of using your phone.
Im really disappointed with the lack of apps that are useful! Most of the stuff on Samsung Gear are watch faces which although cute they serve very little purpose.
reminders workaround
u need 2 apps (app launcher) and (s s voice pro)
I installed app launcher for my watch (called app launcher) and s voice pro for the phone ( this app will enable me to wake up my Phone, unlock it and open Google now without touching the phone device at all.
U can activate s voice through your phone but u wont eb able to get audio feedback from the phone itself (u might want to have a bluetooth headset to cummicate with the device)
I managed to activate google now and set a reminder note, however when asked what time I like it to be set, google now could no longer register my voice. (keep in mind that I was speaking to my watch and not my phone device). Prob something to do with my watch not the app.
Unfortunately my watch battery died before further testing. I will try and pair my phone with a BT headset and see if things get better!

I really hope someone makes something that works. Although the above solution works, its not 100% guaranteed that it will work as your voice might not register correctly every time, and without looking at your phone screen u wont be able to know if its working correctly. Seems like too much of a hassle for a simple task.
Really dissapointed this is not implemented as I use it a lot on my phone.
You can activate google now by installing app called wearable widgets and setting google widget as one available on your watch.
I use Google Reminders on my phone and get the notification on the watch. Doesn't work the other way though.

yeah works the same on my watch, tried some different apps but none of them are easy to work with.
I kinda gave up in the end. Just have to settle on the simple stuff that it does, and not recommend buying this to any of my friends.

Running/fitness on LG Urbane 2 LTE: GhostRacer app

It took me a long time to find a good running app for my LG Urbane 2 LTE and I found it: GhostRacer. I am sharing my findings with the community. This is the only developer who understands how to make a running/fitness app for an Android Wear smartwatch.
GhostRacer:
1) works with standalone watch, no phone needed,
2) GPS works,
3) large white font on black background, easy to read when running,
4) configurable screen-always-on,
4) configurable display,
5) export/sync with RunKeeper.
Those are GR's great features I found so far, there may be more.
If you have a GPS problem, try this beta version: https://plus.google.com/104460556988380178420/posts/De3AP9wu7js

I read about it somewhere else but forgot to download it then. Checking it out for sure....
I tried out Ghostracer and it recorded only the time run, not the distance. Then, I tried Runkeeper in the car, and it recorded almost twice as many miles as my car. Weird. I tried it a few times with the same results.

Assuming you are using LG Urbane 2 LTE which has a built-in GPS:
1. Make sure you have a GPS lock before start running. You can use Wear GPS to find if you have a lock.
2. Distances I get from watch are close to Google Maps.
3. Runkeeper: I know nothing for sure, but my guess is that it starts recording before GPS achieves good position accuracy. Start from Wear GPS and then switch to GhostRacer or RunKeeper.

Has anyone with watch urbane 2nd edition LTE noticed that Google Fit step counter is wildly inaccurate if you start a running activity?
In my case if I start the Google Fit running activity, the gps in Google Fit reports a 4 mile run as only about 1700 steps

Yes. I have the original version of the watch released in November and when I received the update to bring it up to speed with the new release the step counter got considerably worse. I don't know if it was completely accurate from the start, but steps definitely dropped a lot since the update, with or without Google fit tracking runs. I use ghostracer to track runs. I don't worry too much about steps but I wish it was a little more accurate.

Gear Navigator Companion

There is a paid app by Mobiteka called Gear Navigator Companion on the Gear S2 app store. The app needs a free app by the same name to be installed on your phone https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobiteka.navigator&hl=en
The app supposedly uses the Google Maps api to offer navigation and street view on your Gear S2. I installed the free Android app on my Galaxy Note 5 and purchased the app for the Gear S2. However the app always fails to get installed on the watch with the message "Unable to continue without your Gear connected. Connect your mobile device to your Gear and try again". This happens despite the fact that my Gear S2 is very much connected to my phone and is receiving notifications just fine.
I have left a negative review on the Gear app store and will update this post if and when the problem gets fixed.
Update (on 01 December 2015)
The developer contact me within 10 hours of my review and offered some helpful suggestions on how to get the app working. To be on the safe side, I conducted a factory reset of my Gear S2 and repaired the watch with my phone and the app managed to get installed on the first try. It works well with the companion app on the phone and I'm pretty happy with how things turned out. I have modified my review to give it 4 stars.

S voice

Good day all,
I ve had this watch for almost a year now and I still cant get SVoice to function similarly to OK Google on my Android Wear watch. Any advice?
It either doesnt hear me or my favorite part is when I say "text so and so" it will tell me that person is not in my contacts list.
Also is it me or does HERE navaitgator not work great (Im in NYC) as well as Google Maps on a wear watch? Maybe Im comparing too much..But there are serious quality dips here.
I asked the same question awhile ago and got zero response. Near as I can tell all it does is record a voice memo with no Reminder functions. Which is a shame cuz I'd love to have that. I can still read a Reminder on my watch from the phone though.
S Voice couldn't call a particular person or any other to be exact, then I added that person to a "buddy" list as a favorite and S Voice was able to recognize and call. I tried to do some navigation, but was getting a route only overview, no directions. I think it is possible to install Here Maps on the watch or it may need to be installed on the phone to function. Will try tomorrow.
Yeah, it's not Google, for sure. I wish there was some way the S2 would work with Google but apparently that's out.
Feedback for S Voice
Hi all,
We'd like to know more about the issue you're having with S Voice.
Can you please share the device information?
Please feel free to reply through here or on private message.
S Voice team @ Samsung
I use both gear S and S2. The gear s I use for work with a work sim and I can say "call <name>" and it dials from my work number even though the contact is on the phone, same for text. Is it a permission issue you're having? Though I do use a Samsung phone so maybe that helps, but to be honest I've tried the gear S wear port and found a new love for tizen on the S and S2, it's not pretty but does what I need and has best by far battery life.

Gear S3 on iPhone

This forum is for every one who want to share info, experience and hope... about a strange pair between the iPhone (that in my opinione is still the best phone, and I've a iPhone 6 and a Samsung S5) and the Gear S3 that is much better than iwatch.
Actually there is a long way for obtain a full compatibility between them.
Any one know, or suppose how the iOS gear s app will integrate the S3 and if there were, in the early future, the possibility to answer to the message.

I hope this changes in future updates...
iPhone 7 and S3 here as well. So far quite ok for a first version. I guess it's a pretty good opportunity for Samsung to conquer some Alien terrain here if they do well. I hope I won't get disappointed.
It´s suppose to be an solution if you install the app "Android Ware" on the Iphone, just install and leave it alone they say, and it adds some protocols that make it possible to answer messages on the S3 from the Iphone.
Have tried this, but not getting it to work.

Why would the "Android Wear" app do anything for a TizenOS watch? The Gear S3 is not running Android Wear.
Anyway, I also have the Gear S3 and a iPhone6. The phone choice, for sure, is not going to change. But when it comes to smartwatches, the Gear S3 is a beauty and packed with features. The AppleWatch feels more like a toy or a calculator.
I just hope the Software will improve when it comes to iPhone compatibility.
- The Gear manager must allow for paid apps and watchfaces. We currently only get the free stuff.
- Interactive notifications (think this is a limitation in the iOS API).
- Samsung Pay is missing for iOS (hope it comes to European countries as well).
Like the idea that Tizen is expanding the development possibilities for apps. Soon we will be able to program apps with .net & C#, which is awesome!

Hello guys,
Using the Samsung Gear S3 with my iPhone 6. Works really good actually!
I got one question though. Do any of you got problems with the S Health App? When I have been out running, with just the watch, the training is recorded then transefered to the S Health App. I can see the correct trainingoccasion but when I try to enter it to see the map the app just freezes. Shorter runes below 1km works, but longer ones just freezes the app...
Anyone else with this problem?
Thanks

Unfortunately, this is a known issue with the Gear App and iOS. It freezes every time you go into s-health map or details. Lots of other issues, like no Strava integration. Hopefully, Samsung is working on this and will post an update to the Gear App soon. Otherwise this the Gear S3 is too finicky to put up with, and there are other non-Applie watches that are MUCH more stable
For the problem in using S Health with the Gear S2/S3 and the iPhone here you find an helpful message.

IPhone 6 and gear s3 (LTE) User. Not quite sure I'm able to establish a remote pairing with my phone. The watch goes into standalone mode and I can make and receive calls and texts with the number exclusive to the watch, however I don't receive notifications from the phone in case I leave it behind at home.
I previously used the first gen Gear S with Samsung note 4 edge and getting a remote connection was no issue and I would still receive notifications from the phone in case I left in behind. I suspect remote connection with iPhone or any non Samsung phone is a problem. Any help would be highly appreciated.

1. The S3 can remotely connect to many Android phones, it doesn't have to be a Samsung phone.
2. While RC is necessary to receive notifications from a phone, services like Digits and Google Voice will allow sharing a phone number and messages even when the watch is in standalone mode.
3. The RC phone doesn't have to be your primary phone.
I have a cheap Android phone permanently docked on my home WiFi, that is dedicated to remotely connecting to my watch. It is never connected via BT to my primary device (an iPad or Samsung tablet). All calls, messages, email, etc come to all my devices simultaneously.
Work-Around for Notifications on S3
FYI for the forum. I found a way to get far more notifications out of the S3 Frontier on iPhone. When I first purchased it (had an Apple Watch), I completely disconnected the Apple Watch from the iPhone, and then connected the new S3 Frontier to it. Worked OK, just not alot of notifications coming through on it. Then I tried something. I unpaired the S3, tehn re-paired the Apple Watch, let it fully sync up, then left it in the charger in the bedroom. I then Re-paired my S3 to the iPhone, and guess what - I get ALL of the same notifications on the S3 that I was getting no the Apple Watch - Text, phone calls, emails, Google maps, everything. APPARENTLY, (this is a guess but as good as I can come up with), the iPhone THINKS it's still talking to the Apple Watch. And No - the Apple watch does not even have to be anywhere near the iPhone. So - If you don't have an Apple Watch, find a friend who does. Disconnect your Gear from your phone, connect it to your friends Apple watch and let it fully pair. Once done, walk away (your friend can re-pair his Apple Watch to his phone after you leave), then when back home, repair your S3 to your iPhone and Viola!
With you not having a problem connecting your S7 to your S2 and and your Apple watch to your iPhone, the problem is probably your iPhone as Bluetooth connection is also reported dropping when iPhone is connected to other products. It’s common, even the new wireless Q-Tips for your ears have been dropping connection.
Thanks,

Apple does not provide an API for third-party app to access SMS. So no app will have this permission.
