How to make and respond to text messages using Verizon Messages+ on the Gear S3 - Samsung Gear S3

Do you prefer to use Verizon Message+ instead of the default Samsung Messages app? Here is how you can make, receive and respond to text messages with Verizon Message+ through your Gear S3 as if it were the stock Samsung Messages app.
1. Go to the Gear Manager app on your phone
2. Under the settings tab, click on notifications, then manage notifications
3. Scroll down, make sure that Messages is checked, and Message+ is unchecked.
That's it. Now you can receive and respond to incoming text messages through Verizon Messages+ as if it were the default Samsung messaging app. You can also compose new messages and scroll through all your messages by clicking on the messages app on your watch. Pictures also come through to the watch.
I haven't tried this trick on other 3rd party texts apps, but it may work. Post your results below.

Did you mean uncheck Messages and check Message+? Otherwise you won't get the verizon messages notifications to reply to. Also you can only receive group messages you can't reply to them.

I have messages checked and Verizon Message+ unchecked.
I am able to view and respond to group texts.

So you're using the Samsung messaging and can respond to group texts? I can see group texts but can't reply to group text using the Samsung messaging app.

ttown, thanks great discovery. I have Verizon Messages+ as my default app on the phone. On my Gear I have Samsung Messaging turned on and VZ Messages+ unchecked. Works like a charm. I have a Verizon Note 5 and my Gear S3 is on T-Mobile.

I have tried having the messaging notifications on and Verizon messenger off and vise versa. In either case i am not able to respond to a group message.
Can anyone respond to all members of a group text in a single reply?

I am unable to respond to text. I have tried all combos.

I've been unable to get this to work either. LGV20 and gear s3 classic.

[Q] use stock/alternative SMS app with google voice

So I love google voice, but. I'd prefer to use handcent as my SMS app. Is there a way to disable google voice's SMS functionality? I'm on Sprint so my google voice account is linked via my carrier.

Going from memory here... but click enable text messages on this phone under settings in GV on your computer. In settings on your phone unchecked the box to keep your inbox synced. That is what I did in order to use gv for voicemail only and use stock sms. I receive a text when I get a new vm

I just did this during a sms conversation with the wife. Texts we're coming thru GV, until I...
Settings (In GV from PC)>Phones tab>Click "Edit" by your number>Tick the "Text Settings" box.
Now I'm texting thru the stock SMS app.

This works perfectly, but I still get text notifications from GV. If I disable text message notifications on the phone's app will I still get my voicemail notifications?
EDIT =>In sync and notifications, I have "synchronize inbox", and "text messages" checked, and "inbox notifications" unchecked. This notifies via stock sms and disables google voice text message notifications.
Whether or not I get my voice mail notifications is a different story.
My settings which send all SMS through stock messenger and sends me an SMS through stock messenger when I have a voicemail are as follows:
In phone --> menu button, synchronize inbox unchecked, Text messages (Notify via txt message) checked, Inbox notifications unchecked
On PC through GV --> click the gear in the upper right, select voice settings, under "Phone" tab click "edit" under your phone and check "receive text messages on this phone" then click save at the bottom. Under "Voicemail and Text" tab and "Voicemail Notifications" check "Send a text sms notification too:"
When I get a text that I have a VM I just open GV and listen to it. I cannot disable my Sprint number with GV and this was the best workaround I found. If you flash a new ROM you will need to redo these settings again.

Notifications

I am considering getting this watch. However, one important question:
My Nexus 4 is running data only (No Voice Plan). I use Skype for phone calls and Sliding Messenger (through Google Voice) for Text Messages. Will I be able to see Incoming Calls from Skype? Will I be able to see and respond to text messages through Sliding Messenger (Google Voice)?
TIA!
i think you can see who is calling you from skype by using watchit! app that push notifications from your phone to skype. but you won't have answer/decline funcionality.
you will be able to see your text messages but you can't respond to them - i think to do that you need 3rd party app that gives you keyboard funcionality.
Just seeing who is calling and an indication of missed calls would be enough. What is the link for the watchit! App?
Likewise, just seeing the text messages would be enough. I can reply from my phone. So, there is a way to see the text messages even though they would NOT be coming into the Messaging App on the phone, but into Google Voice?

Depends on what you mean by block. If you turn off the default text app, you won't see them. Depending on the default app, you can turn off specific senders but if they are coming in and you don't know beforehand you may not be able to.
I only use Textra and almost never get text messages.
If you are thinking this will protect you from stagefright, it is more embedded than that and all the possible ways it can be used is unknown still.

Ability to change default apps

Is there anyway possible to change the default messaging and email apps to whatever one I want? (Speficially Gmail and Textra)
Gmail works fine (for receiving at least). I turned it off because my watch was vibrating too much. I use Google's messenger just fine too - voice response and all.
Sorry for taking so long to reply, and is there a way to compose new messages from Textra?
I recall being able to send messages through the messages app on the watch.
Just ignore the "please set messages to default app on phone" message that pops up every time you make a new message on the watch.

Oh, but I can't see my participant's messages on the gear (only I see my messages) also, group messages isn't functional.
I would like to know this too. I use Aquamail on my phone for email and Next SMS (Handscent) for messaging. I don't really want to use the default email app or default messaging. Is there not a way to change it?

I use Textra and when I go to Messages on the watch, I get the common message of, "Unable to receive messages on the gear. Change the messaging app to Messages". If I click "X", most of my message are there. Is there a way to stop getting that message from popping up without switching to "Messages" on my phone?
or, is there another app besides "Messages" that integrates with the watch? I just don't like Samsung Messages.
Thanks everyone. Also, I have googled this topic, just want to get people opinions on this great forum.
I would also like to know how to get rid of this message.
Also, I use Google messenger as my default messaging app. On my s2 watch, I only see my own outgoing messages. It doesn't show any incoming messages. How do I see both sides of the conversation?
