So... I broke my old Verizon M8 that was rooted. Got new one and upgraded it to 6.0.
Now I am trying to root it and get s-off.
From what I remember and my notes I need to temp root it with KingRoot, then use Sunshine to get s-off, after that I can install TWRP, and after that SuperSU binaries for permanent root.
I followed these steps
factory reset,
Installed KingRoot
did RUU using DOTTAT_VZWM8_M_S_ON_6_0_RUU.zip
Enabled USB Debug
Enabled High precision GPS
Enabled Mock location (set it to KingRoot)
Now I am running KingRoot and it keeps restarting at 18-20%.
Anything I am missing?
Did I had to do it with Android 5.0 and I can't root it with 6.0?
Thank You
UPDATE: So I guess Sunshine can now temproot it self. I installed it, it updated to latest one, was able to gain temp root, and now I am S-OFF and boot loader unlocked.
Moral of the story: RTFM.

Hi,
I recently updated to 4.4.4 and I want to get TWRP and the Xposed Framework back. I'm not rooted and my bootloader is locked, but I do have s-off. When I try to flash TWRP, I get an error message (attachment below). Also, since the Xposed Framework requires root access, I can't use it since I can't use WeakSauce anymore and I'm not ready to dive into Sunshine. I was thinking about flashing the 4.4.4 rooted ROM that's available. Would this at least get me root access?
Thanks,

Not sure why you relocked, but since you have s off you can flash twrp recovery via a fastboot zip file. There are a few threads on XDA, but basically you need to put twrp in a zip alongside an android-info.txt file.

Were you running Windows as admin when you tried this?

You need to flash recovery in ruu mode as a zip just like beaups stated. But you can unlock your boot loader via HTCdev if your s-off. Just supercid your phone an then htcdev will unlock your boot loader. But you don't need a unlocked bootloader tho just exposing your choices...I know this works cause my last 2 phones I used java card for s-off an unlocked via htcdev myself.
Phone was acting sluggish, used moto device manager from my PC & did a software repair on 24.3.7 running 4.4.4. Now I have no su binary installed. Still showing rooted qe 1/1 but super su will not take. My boot loader is unlocked, any help would be appreciated. I need my hotspot back since we have no home internet. Thanks
Droid Max (hopefully still rooted ) and unlocked running latest stock 24.3.7,

Your saying when you download supersu from playstore it wont load when asking for root?
I would load a custom recovery (TWRP) through ADB. That should get you root if you are BL unlocked. Reboot into recovery and TWRP should ask you if want root.
I may do that, still debating holding off until root for 4.4.4 comes hopefully with lollipop we can get root again. I don't need the ROMs I just liked the hotspot option. On the flip side ROMs u can customize pretty much anything. Busybox installer says I'm rooted but I have no write privileges so it won't install binaries.

If you are unlocked, you can simply install a custom recovery (TWRP) as mentioned and you'll get root back. I've never run a custom ROM on my Maxx, but am unlocked, fully updated on 4.4.4, rooted and running hotspot through Xposed.

Just a quick question here since I don't see a guide anywhere. My brother is getting an M8 from Verizon in several weeks (he's getting a new contract and the M8 looks like the best free/cheap phone available). So I can assist him, what is the current status on unlocking the bootloader and rooting? Looks like it will ship with Lollipop according to Verizon's site.
I don't need detailed guides on doing everything (I'm familiar with the concepts; I have a Nexus 5 myself), but just a quick "Bootloader can't be unlocked, so no root" or whatever the case is would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Sunshine 3.x now unlocks/ s-offs VZW M8 with LP 5.0
Not 100% on rooting.
I literally just flashed TWRP to mine via ADB fastboot method about 4 minutes ago and am running a stock nandroid backup as I type this.
I was on 4.4.4 when I S-offed, then took the LP update to 5.0, then flashed TWRP recovery (right now) in order to flash SuperSU. That's about all I know. Everyone said to S-off BEFORE taking the OTA update in order to obtain root on LP.. so I did. Now i'm just trying to figure out where I get this SU to install for perm root. Now your guess is as good as mine for why I needed to S-off BEFORE taking the OTA. The new sunshine that was released (3.x) is able to S-off after the update so I'm really not sure what the difference would be whether you S-off on 4.4.4 or 5.0 and then do the same process to install supersu. Anyways, hope this kind of helps.
Oh, and I suppose if you S-offed , you could flash TWRP then just install a pre-rooted stock ROM which i'm sure is somewhere out there.

Ahhhh.. OK.
Glad I didn't update then before I ran Sunshine. I'm sure Jcase and his buddy are working on getting VZW ironed out soon. Just finished Flashing TWRP, and to the OP.. when you flash TWRP, it roots it for you pretty much, it must be bundled in there. After I made the backup, and went to reboot it asked if I wanted to install superSU since it saw I wasn't rooted yet. It did and I just rebooted and it was there, updated the binaries no problems and now I'm on stock VZW LP-rooted.

Hi, I have an HTC One M8 on 5.0.1 and I have little knowledge with rooting. I want to root my phone because there are some apps I want to use that are only capable of being used if my phone is rooted. I've tried Kingo root and it doesn't work on my phone so I was wondering if someone can give me instructions and download links so I can root my phone. If you can it would be much appreciated, thanks.

You have 2 options at the moment.
1) Ship device to one of the many great people with a Java Card/XTC2 Clip - Look at the OP of this thread to see where the people are located.
2) With some time and luck - King Root, which has been proven to work for a number of M8 users.

I was able to get S-Off using the KingRoot and Sunshine method. Now what? Although I did get root long enough to get S-off, I lose it after each time I get temp root with the KingRoot app again. KingRoot will say that I have root, but I can't get SuperSU to install.
I am doing a factory reset now and will try to use KingRoot to get temp root, then install SuperSU. Will I then be able to install TWRP after SuperSU is installed correctly?

If you are S-OFF, then I would flash a custom recovery and then a custom ROM (if you want)
or flash superSU in the custom recovery if you just want root.
Once S-OFF you are in full control of your device, so do some reading about it as you can end up with an expensive paperweight easily if you don't know what you're doing.
Or try vroot, i rooted my phone in just 1 tap
dexter0218, I think it would be BIG BIG news here if there were a one-click root solution for the newest M8. 5.01 phones aren't rootable easily.
boltz111, no need to fiddle with SuperSU. Now that you are S-Off, make sure you have ADB and get the latest TWRP for the M8. Drop to your ADP shell and do:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery twrp.zip
(sub in the name of your zip)
That's it. Then:
- Power down
- Power up in bootloader (hold down vol)
- Go to recovery
You have to go to recovery before booting or else the rom will overwrite the recovery.
Once you're in TWRP, you can load up SuperSU from a .zip and it will do its thing.
Or flash a rooted ruu from fastboot, loads you back to stock but with perm root, never had an issue
Hi I have a HTC one m8 that I need someone to root for me I've heard some people on xda could do that for me , if anyone is willing to do this please email me at [email protected]

Hi,
You can easily root a 5.0.1 stock HTC One M8 using the following method.
1. Download KingRoot and Sunshine.
2. Run KingRoot. If the phone reboots, run KingRoot again once it's back on. If it fails, re-run King Root. It took me about 5 tries to get temporary root.
3. Run Sunshine. It will test your phone for Root. Once passed, it will ask you to buy a license ($25). Then it will reboot.
4. Run KingRoot again. Again, keep running it until you achieve temporary root.
5. Run Sunshine to achieve S-OFF.
Congrats, you're now rooted. Next, you'll want to install a custom recovery (such as TWRP via ADB) and a custom ROM (if you want). Guides to do that are a-plenty.

Sunshine will be updated shortly to allow sunshine to root 4.17.605.5 without the need for kingroot. I posted a downgrade guide that will work for achieving this too.
