Outdoor visibility (max brightness)

Rate this thread to express how well you can see the OnePlus 5's display outdoors. In case you've been playing Minecraft for 18 months straight, you might not known how to get outside anymore. Well, find the door and walk through it. A higher rating indicates that it has very high maximum brightness and thus fantastic outdoor visibility in direct sunlight.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

I find I fairly often have to adjust it to its brightest (when the automatic adjustment hasn't) in full sun.

No issues here, screen is superb.
Very few issues with this phone, camera when compared to my last phone.

What I would like to have was a better access to the brightness bar. Instead of two swipe downs from the status bar, something more easy and pratical to just quick change the brightness.
Some AOSP roms had swiping on the status bar to change the brightness.

You can swipe down with two fingers.

Personally visibility on sun is not that good as I had on OnePlus One or atleast I can't read nothing not direct sun. :/

I asked on other threads about screen legibility, and many owners told me that it's perfect readable under direct sunlight, even more than Mate 9.

I got the Mate 9 Pro and One Plus 5, and honestly my Mate 9 Pro is better under direct sunlight than my OP 5.
If I compare the OP 5 with my Xiaomi Mi Mix, the OP 5 is better under direct sunlight than Mi Mix. I also got the S8 Plus and that is better than the OP 5 under direct sunlight, but not for much.
I still love this phone.

The phone is already difficult to hold with one hand..

For me, it's decent but not great. Better than the Asus Zenfone 2 I came from, but I could definitely have some more brightness under direct Indian sunlight.

I find it pretty hard to see the screen but....I'm 54. You younguns still have good eyes. LOL (As you get older your vision needs more contrast/brightness in general.)
But, it's not just about brightness. It's about glare/reflectivity. If there are a lot of things other than the sun, like all manner of things in the world around us projecting their shiny bits at my phone, then it's mostly unreadable.
I'm going to try a screen protector that is not so reflective.

Well, I don't have the mate 9 I have the mate 9 Pro. Honestly I like both, the Mate 9 Pro is a beautiful phone, nice camera, beautiful design. The OP 5 is a nice phone, super fast, camera not impressive, I have the jelly effect, but not bad enough for me to return my phone.
At the end you have to weight your options, do you want good looking phone with good pictures and great design, good battery life, go for the Mate 9. If you want a super fast phone, with good pictures depending on the light and depending on your shaking hands, great battery life and good development support go for the OP 5.

I had the Mate 9 Pro and replaced it with the Oneplus 5.
They both have their strengths, it comes down to what you are looking for.
Something that surprised me though is that I feel the display of the Oneplus 5 is actually better. Even though it's 1080 and the Huawei is 2k.
Considering the price difference, the Oneplus is the better phone. It's also faster and has a better battery life.
The Huawei has infrared port, smarter implementations in the software such as knuckle gestures, screen recording and so on.
In the camera department, the Huawei has a much better front camera because of the auto focus.
The rear camera is also better in the Huawei, but Oneplus gained in a little with the latest update. The Huawei camera is more consistent, whereas the Oneplus is hit and miss sometimes.
And lastly the Huawei has a better design. More stylish.

One of the best performing phones in daylight as it's oled, no problems here at all. Might need to adjust brightness at best.

You must be yoking. First you're told how to use two fingers rather then one finger two times. Now you can't hold it.

Max brightness is way too low. Wish my OP3 were alive so I could compare them directly, it looks like 5's brightness is lower.

For me, brightness could be a little bit better.
Swipe left and right in the status bar for brightness would be very nice.

Nokia 7 plus vs note 5 pro. Which is worth it?

Which phone is best for value.
Please bring pros and cons since i don't want to regret my decision in the future

Note 5 pro is better because has a great community with a lot of developers

I've seen that nokia is able to install treble roms from xda forums.
But i am not really into custom roms

I will choose POCO F1

I was planning to buy the nokia 7 plus and the only reason i didn't and went with the note 5 instead was that the usb c port seems to start to fail over time for some people: https://community.phones.nokia.com/...lus-usb-c-charging-port-fail-in-build-quality
Not a risk i want to take.
Just though it was worth mentioning
Also some people report that the phone will sometimes play sound out of the speakers even with headphones plugged in which is also a dealbreaker for me.

Dunno about the headphone issue. But the charging port is a hardware issue as far as i can tell so that needs to be repaired if it happens.

If the nokia 7 plus users will complain about the usb port issue(when i will make the post on the forums), then i will consider the note 5 pro.

I would go for Note 5 pro. Nokia comes with almost 100% AOSP android with fast updates. However lack of custom ROM development would be a very big downside. So when Nokia will stop supporting the device and treble ROMs will have some device specific bugs which won't be fixed - You are locked

if you just wana ROOT your phone and wana live with Stock ANDROID ONE. then NOKIA 7+ is beautiful big device with Curved screen edges having amazing screen Tint (easy to read fonts) and loud sound
however
if you wana have device with whom you can try different roms having maximum developer support then RN5P is very good. however RN5p (like other xiaomis) have poor screen colors and viewing angles. even Kcal can to this much !

Can anyone tell me what is the problem with the RN5AI Screen Colors? I use my device for 4 and a half months now and don't see any problem with the screen that is mentioned everywhere (I have very good eyes and I see my screen as crystal clear so I can't understand why everyone complains over the screen and in professional reviews they also say the screen is amazing)

OnePlus 7 Pro OR Redmi K20 Pro ?

Hi, I decided to change my phone (LG G5) this year, because finally here are the notch-less phones.
I'm really interested by the oneplus 7 pro, the asus zenfone 6 doesn't seem better, but the Xiaomi Redmi k20 is coming soon.
With the same features, but seems smaller (I think that the oneplus is really too big for the one hand use)
But, mostly it's about the OS, miui or oxygen os ?
miui seems close to apple (no thank you) and oxygen close to android stock.
Do you think I should wait the redmi k20 announce ? (28 may) or it doesn't worth to wait ?

I haven't done full research into the k20 but if the question is between OxygenOS Vs MIUI and generally between how Xiaomi operates Vs OnePlus then I would say OnePlus every day of the week.
I have been personally interested in the Xiaomi Mi phones for a few years but I always see a lack of ROM development, the extended period of time it takes to get your bootloader unlocked, the adverts built into MIUI and the heavy customisation as really big negatives of Xiaomi.
The performance of the OnePlus 7 Pro is fantastic. If you use the GPU Profiling developer setting, even on 90hz 1440p, the phone hardly goes over the green line (or doesn't drop frames) on the stock kernel. Once we get custom kernels up and running from the likes of RenderBroken and Arter97, this thing will absolutely fly!
In terms of size I have smaller hands and I agree that you can't use this phone one handed all of the time. There are things you can do like swipe down for notifications that do help but it's still a two handed phone for some uses. Having said that, that's the way this industry is going so for mez I would need a phone with 5-5.5inch display with all screen display to be truely one handed (HTC 10 was the last phone I could use completely one handed and manage to reach everywhere on the phone without it being awkward).
My view is go for the 7 Pro and you won't regret it.

Yeah it seems nice, but I don't really care anymore as I already bought the OP7pro.
The redmi is still not announced in France, I think the redmi k20 is a little better on the hardware, but not the software.
And yes cheaper.
I'm happy with the OP7pro, except a little too much heavy but I don't regret, but it's nice for redmi, the market need flagships killer.

OEM skin is a main factor that you have to decide.
Oxygen OS is not perfect either. Killing app on background aggressively is something that oneplus doesn't want to fix. Echo voice on Snapchat Facebook messenger etc. Battery life is not great either.

You can disable the ads and I am hoping because of the agressive pricing and bootloader unlock there will be tons of custom ROMs so software should not be an issue

I was so about to order the Oneplus 7 pro but now after the K20 pro launch I am having second thoughts.
Can someone please state all the reasons why I must buy OP7 pro over the K20 pro so that my faith in Oneplus is restored again :angel:

I just disagree about this point, the battery is awesome.
I charged it yesterday morning 100%, I used it a lot as a new phone a lot of config, but also videos à 100% brightness (screen at 90hz)
I only charge it during the car (watching video 100% too and low charging in car), not charging during the night, this morning I am at 61%.
And another good point, screen at 100%, videos, games, install apps etc.. and no heat.
This is the first time I don't need to charge a phone during my sleep.

Interested to see how well the K20 pro works with Oxygen OS flashed on it. Cheaper phone with OOS, that'll do nicely.

K20, it has a headphone jack, I won't feed tard companies that wants to force you to buy new headphones that are inferior to the ones with cable at this point.

I went for the 9t pro.. Flat screen, headphone jack and £300 cheaper for similar spec - 8gb/256gb model... A no brainer imo... No adware I can see and I use nova launcher anyway re GUI. Awesome. Would've liked regular software updates but for the price .....

I own the K20 pro before the OnePlus 7 pro,the display under sunlight it's like cheap oled screen the colour is bad, fingerprint doesn't recognize all the time if your finger is dirt or wet, the miui have a lot of bugs, the front camera capture the coverbord if you use the full body cover and is little annoying

NBA: Realme 5 Pro or Redmi Note 8 Pro

Hi all,
I am thinking of buying a new Smartphone. In my country Realme 5 Pro 8GB/128GB and Redmi Note 8 Pro 6GB/128GB are similarly priced. I am really really confused between these two.
Which one should I pick?
You expert opinions are required.

I am more inclined towards Realme 5 Pro basically due to SD712, Sony Camera Sensor and 8GB Ram Variant.
Currently I am using Realme 3. I don't like Color OS and Camera App. But I have heard that Realme will be providing its own UI with stock like experience. Is it true? And is there any changes in Stock Camera App expected?

Well that's a tough decision. I just bought RM5P 8/128 GB. Have used Xiaomi for about 4+ years and was happy with performance and software. Xiaomi provides lot of power packed software feature and highly customizable UI. But having used for more than 4 years, I was bored with MIUI, so I thought of switching to something relatable.
After I got my hands on RM5P, I was disappointed with the software and less customizable UI, but man, I have no words for the performance and camera. I am glad I made a good decision switching to this as this one has power packed hardware features which no brand has given in this price range. Hopefully, the software will be improved progressively.
My advice: If you have never used Xiaomi, go for Redmi Note 8 pro. Else go for RM5P. You will be happy with both.

The Redmi has a faster CPU and GPU but I heard some issues with overheating( and I don't have faith in Mediatek). In the realme, I have not encountered any overheatiing isues till now. But playing PUBG for longer periods makes the phone a little bit warm which is completely normal. If you want a phone for heavy gaming go with POCO F1, this phone is way better in terms of performance but looks kinda outdated( I regret not buying it). If you want a premium feeling device go for Redmi Note 8 Pro & if you want a overall better device go for Realme 5 pro.

I Have used Redmi Note 4 a very long time ago and I don't really hate MIUI that much. Color Os is totally on other level of crap.

Realme 5 pro has very capable cameras but the 48MP images doesn't look that sharp. Normal 12MP is better( I think).

I just bought Realme 5 Pro 4/128 variant after (and still) owning Realme 3 Pro 6/128. I have considered Redmi Note 8 Pro before buying, but at the end I chose Realme. Here is why:
- Photography is the most important factor for me, thus I was looking for a phone with Qualcomm SOC because it will have Gcam mod for it. But then I saw on youtube lately that gcam mod also has been made available for RN8 Pro with mediatek chipset, but unfortunately the stock camera is still better than the Gcam on that phone. In case you don't know, the right Gcam variant with the right settings on Realme 3/5 Pro is amazing. I have compared it with my friend's Galaxy S9 and S10 and it put them both to shame when you examine the detail side by side at 1:1 zoom. Gcam on realme even manage to equal or beat my mirrorless M4/3 panasonic gx85!
- I read that RN8 Pro has touchscreen issues that still has not been fixed till now.
For me, ColorOS is ok. It has very aggressive RAM / battery management that often closing running apps eventhough there is still plenty of available RAM. So I just turned off the power saving feature (called 'Smart Power Saver') and use 'custom power saver' that allows you to set background running permission individually for each of your apps that you know shouldn't be close automatically like gps sport tracking app in my case. In app management setting screen you can also specify that certain apps are allowed to do auto start. You can also locked the app in the recent app screen so that it won't be closed. Unfortunately that setting is not persistent and only work until the next restart.

I'd never prefer an mtk powered device over an SD one. Just look at rm8p xda development forum and here. Words are quite unnecessary.

I have used gcam with my LG G6 and the results very stunning. But on my Realme 3 gcam is not as good.

I have never used stock Android Before. I have heard a lot of praise though. I am not sure if I would like it or not.
I have seen the camera Comparison of both these devices on youtube and dynamic range of Realeme 5 Pro is really much better.

Well, as you wish but rooting and custom stuff can noticeably lengthen your device's life span and raise performance, lower battery consumption. Even if you don't count these a SD powered device is mostly better choice for base lifespan of chipset is longer and features to add later are most of time more available for SD devices rather than mtk.

I have also come to know that Xiaomi Has released Source Code or something like that which will be very helpful for development. Actually I read it on XDA review. They also wrote that they have shipped few RN8 Pro to devs for active development. Although Development Section of RN8 Pro seems very inactive as compared to Realme 5 Pro section.
Most Probably anyone buying phone is this range will be buying a new phone after one year so Longer Life Span of phone is just not required if it can live for one year with its performance intact (Which I have doubt about due to mediatek).
Most of the people will never use Rooting and stuff on their phones even if the stuff is available for their phones (I Guess). But it is always nice to have support for your device. It is a plus but not a negative in my view.

In app management setting screen you can also specify that certain apps are allowed to do auto start. You can also locked the app in the recent app screen so that it won't be closed. Unfortunately that setting is not persistent and only work until the next restart.

Absolutely agree. Although even with released source code and free gift devices to developers indeed xda seems way more inactive if we compare redmi note 8 pro and realme 5 pro. I'm absolutely glad I bought this device instead of rm8p especially as you said custom stuff support and help. Probably mtk devices aren't the favorite of developers either so rm5p getting faster development with delayed source code reveal and even without gift devices to devs.

Yes there is in Indonesia.
This version MGC_6.1.021_MI8_V2e.apk
In addition to the instruction there to set the saturation, I activate HDR+ enhanched mode which gives much better result in settings > general - advanced > HDR+ control = on and then set to hdr+ enhanced in the camera main screen.

Does Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro has the same screen problems like OnePlus 8 Pro?

I have OnePlus 8 Pro and Oppo Find X2 Pro.
Under 5% screen brightness OnePlus has huge black crush.
They fixed it with beta DC patch, which makes colour accuracy hitting the floor.
Oppo has very small black crush on minimal brightness level.
Both Oppo and OnePlus have the same screen model (just differently calibrated - OnePlus has extremly vivid calibration just like S20 and Oppo has very good natural colour calibration) - but same problem:
between 5-10% screen brightness there is a step which is making everything tinted green.
You slide brightness from 1% to 10% and you will have colours like: ok ok GREEEEEEEN ok ok ok.
I won't accept 1k€ phone having such bad screen, so I am thinking about trying flagship Xiaomi,
can you go into complete dark room and slide brightness from 1% to 10 and tell me if the colours stays the same?
I also have S20 Ultra and iPhone 11 Pro Max - their screens are just perfect (iPhone has much warmer screen, very pleasing to human eye), but I don't like iOS and Samsung has pure garbage Exynos CPU in EU.

I've tried it. Miu12 xiaomi.eu latest stable. No issues, screen colors remain very consistent. Let me also note that this phone/rom combination has a really good auto-brightness implementation. I've had numerous phones, this is the first one i never need to manually fiddle with brightness.
My only complaint about this phone (or miui) is its out of the box aggressive memory handling. Need to tune many settings of apps to not miss notifications.

In the meantime I also discovered a fix for my Oppo screen problems -
there is an option called 'low brightness flicker-free eye comfort' and after turning it on the screen is perfect.
It is basically the same thing as OnePlus did (PWM/DC patch), but this one actually works,
while on OnePlus it fixes one thing and brake two others.
Long story short I'll be staying with find x2 pro, because of 12GB DDR5, 512GB UFS3 and
well baked ROM with good RAM management.

PS. Auto-brightness is indeed bad on Oppo, Samsung and OnePlus and it's great only on iPhone.
Another thing I'm missing with Oppo is wireless charging, but I'm OK with those issues.
