LG has apparently released an official bootloader unlock tool for "The US Open Market",
Will this unlock the bootloaders of the ATT, VZW, and Sprint Variants? Or just the unlocked US version? If not, maybe this can at least help us?

Don't think it will help us locked to ATT, VZW and Sprint

This line just leads me to believe we are still beholden to the Big 3 to get our boot loaders unlocked:
"We're not sure what exactly constitutes the "US open market" but it's more likely to mean unlocked devices officially sold in the US, i.e. not those that are coming from the operators."

I hear this carrier may have more bands than what is listed here:
https://www.frequencycheck.com/carrier-compatibility/221YTBP/lg-h910-v20-lte-a-h915/wind-canada
At least you now have the bands that are on this model, call 'em up to verify compatibility.
I wonder if the 'Enable OEM unlock' slider in the Developer options is an indication the LG unlock tool can be used to unlock the bootloader. I have the H915 as well, so it's the Canadian variant.

No, lots of phones from different mfgs & carriers have this toggle & will never have an unlocked bootloader.
I'm not saying it'll never happen, but, just based on the toggle alone is no reason to get your hopes up.

Does anyone know if the Verizon version of the Moto G can be easily unlocked and rooted like the GSM version? Knowing Verizon's track record with locked down devices I wouldn't be surprised if it can't be unlocked. I'm thinking about buying one as a wifi/media device for my car, but I'd also like to play around with dev on it so a non-unlockable bootloader would be a deal breaker.

Just to be clear, *all* Moto Gs (GSM) ship with locked bootloaders, even if you buy one that is factory SIM-unlocked, but Motorola offers a way to unlock the bootloader on the phone (for free) via their web site after you register it and request an unlock code. In the U.S., doing so voids your hardware warranty.
So the question isn't whether or not the Verizon model will have a locked bootloader or not. It surely will, as they all do. The question is whether Motorola's on-line bootloader unlocker will work with Verizon-branded CDMA model or not. And at this point, given that it hasn't been released yet and nobody has one, how is anybody supposed to answer that question?

I was able to purchase one last night at my local Best Buy after proving to them that they were in fact somewhere in the store, and waiting for them to call their Verizon rep, I just attempted the bootloader unlock on the Motorola Developer (official bootloader unlock) and I can confirm that it is not eligible for unlock at this time. Huge letdown for me as I was gonna get one for myself soon, but the wife won't really care about it being unlocked so for her it's still a good deal.
I purchased the moto G today and it says it is not eligible for bootloader unlock.
I was able to get past the activation screen and not activate it.
Every time I turn the phone on it does ask for activation. Wish I could get rid of this...
Anybody have a way to unlock the bootloader on the Verizon version?
I am waiting for unlock and root for VZW version too before I get it
Moto-G bootloader...
I was fat and happy to buy a pair of these when they became available in my area, but not being able to unlock the bootloader, and also not able to obtain the code from Circle-M, has forced us to begin looking at other devices, and forget the 'G'.
Too bad, I was really looking forward to expanding its horizons, but not if the game is to maintain a lock on my own device, no thank you!

I believe you can't flash a Boost CDMA phone and use it on Verizon (and vice versa): CDMA phones don't have SIM card to identify carriers; instead the carriers keep a database of admissable IMEI. Boost IMEI obviously not on Verizon's database, in which case you are stuck.
(Feel free to correct me, but please hold your flame )

You have to activate it and get a phone number to get past that screen. You dont have to pay anything, just select "pay later" both time it asks you. It'll give you a number and then you can connect to wifi to do the rest of the steps.
Altering the setup app in any way thereafter reboots the phone, so you'll always have the activate app in your drawer. Thanks, Verizon.

Not development, shouldn't be posted here.
And if you are on the LG developer forum, they have no interest in unlocking across the board because of carrier agreements. You could have a petition signed by every person in the world and they wouldn't care. They can't publicly support something that most carriers don't want. T-Mobile is the exception.

I just wanted to share the LG Dev side. The back door discussions are that LG wants to support actual dev/ROM/etc, but carriers want it locked up (free hotspot is just sooooo bad). Not sure why they won't unlock bootloaders for devices not purchased through a carrier or bought outright, but I think it just comes back to the carriers having a good reign over the decision.

I do not see it anywhere on the B&H website and after talking to them (live chat), they are acting like they have no clue what I am talking about. No pre-order date known. I hope this person is correct and not just messing with us but I have not seen a screenshot yet to prove it.

Haven't most previous LG devices (sans Nexus) had US carrier specific SKUs? I doubt the unlocked V20 SKU will work on CDMA carriers at all.
I'm in the market for something to replace my N6 Shamu and v20 has my attention...though I suspect I'm screwed with carrier-specific SKUs and firmware and updates...and the resulting fragmentation of the developer community, if there is one.

The disadvantage? It most likely outright will not work.
Most carrier unlocked smartphones and dumbphones are GSM only and do not support CDMA at all....and do not support the CDMA-carrier LTE bands. IOW, 99.9999% of the time carrier unlocked phones are useless bricks on Verizon and Sprint. The exceptions are Nexus devices and a handful of others.
Also, SPrint for example does not publish their Visual Voicemail app for Nexus carrier unlocked phones...so you have toi use someone else's voicemail service/app.
The massive advantage? A unified developer community, which greatly accelerates how quickly work gets done. Also you can dump your carrier and BYOD anywhere else.

My comment was in response to your "you knowingly blah blah blah" comment, as it's irrelevant given there isn't an equivalent unlocked alternative.

Sure, but when did OP claim they didn't make the petition, and who DID claim they didn't make the petition? I think the guy is all confused haha
This is not the way people should ask manufacturer for things like this.
Only way to get anything done is to find connection in big Android news web sites, tell them to publish poll 'Would you buy next Samsung flagship if it will have locked bootloader?' and then put all this people on FIRE there!
And of course, if they persist, people should persist too.
Simple as that.
I too, will vote with my wallet when choosing my next phone and tablet. If Samsung doesn't leave me a real option for unlocked bootloader, I will spend my money elsewhere.
Just to mention here the Chinese version which is a snapdragon variant has a unlockable boot loader. The US variants don't, the question is why would Samsung do this, if not requested by a carrier otherwise every single snapdragon variant would be locked but they're not.
What about 950/955W? All Canadian phones are carries-unlocked and yet Samsung keeps the BL locked. No reason whatsoever. Definitely will go with a different brand once my S8+ gets old.

Carriers can opt-in or out, that's the smart way to do it for Samsung
Please add Snapdragon Note 8 to the petition title, and you will get more signatures; also, please share this on the S8+, and Note 8 XDA pages too--if you add the Snapdragon Note 8, of course. Carriers can opt-in or out, that's the smart way to do it for Samsung. For example, besides the US Snapdragon S8+, my other phone is a T-Mobile OEM unlocked Motorola Moto Z2 Force. T-Mobile and Sprint allow Lenovo to OEM unlock the Moto Z2 Force, while Verizon and AT&T do not allow it. Samsung cannot blame carriers, because some carriers obviously allow OEM unlock for a different phone that has the exact same CPU/chipset as the aforementioned Samsung (i.e., Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 mobile platform). Samsung has no valid excuse and cannot shift blame to carriers, but why should they? They can save money off of voided warranties via allowing OEM unlock, and give owners what they want at the same time!

If you use the legal way to unlock your bootloader, you will not be able to use Google Pay or other payment systems. While these systems are convenient, the less places my money can be accessed, the better.
I want to get the LG G7 PLUS when I finally save up money as it has 128 GB internal storage. If I can help development in anyway, I will.
wrong section buddy
Well I actually tried yesterday when I found out, and after putting all the info of the phone the website gave me an error saying that the actual model of the T-Mobile variant is LMG710TMP...."P"... I was frustrated cuz the phone model in the settings is LMG710TM not LMG710TMP, Jesus..
Anybody tried it and get it to work?
@bigjohnman
Your assumption/information is totally wrong. LMG710TM means LG G7 for italian carrier TIM. It has nothing to do with T-mobile.

Well both this website, and my T-mobile phone "in settings > device model" says that it is the LMG710TM, I can confirm it but there is a problem with their unlocking website because when I try to unlock it gives an error.
https://www.lg.com/us/cell-phones/lg-LMG710TM-g7-thinq-tmobile
There's no problem with LG unlocking site at all. Your phone isn't eligible for unlocking because it isn't an European LGM710TM mentioned on dev site. For the list of supported devices see screenshot.
Your phone is LGM710TM variant for T-mobile US = LGM710TMP.
T-mobile site states clearly (s. screenshot) that their G7 has a model number LGM710TMP.
As simply as that.

I understand that , my point is that LG website where I go this phone from and also my phone itself say to be the 710TM model not TMP . which is weird and annoying after you were told it was a different model
Hmmm, sorry to get some T-Mobile users hopes up... Telecom Italia Mobile users, You're welcome, or "Prego" as they say in Italy.
May as well delete this thread.

That's really pity for T-mobile customers. So far I know all recent T-mobile phones have a locked bootloader with no possibility to official unlock them. It's T-mobile requirement to manufactures.
Anyway the thread title is misleading and has to be changed.
Well, that sucks! Can't wait to get rid of LG's horrendous version of Android and flash LineageOS.
has everyone mailed LG dev about unlock for tmobile

I brought an LG G7 here in Australia at a bargain a couple of months back. It shows T-mobile during bootup. But the model number is LM-G710TM while the software version is G710TM10p and build OPR.170623.032. I am now worried if LG-G710TM is the Italian model, not T-mobile, I got some Frankenstein phone. It does not have the manufacturer warranty anymore, but a 1 year seller warranty.

Hello and welcome to XDA
The European/Global model number is LMG710EM, I live in Italy and own a G7 with such model number bought new.
Isn't there a way to load EM firmware on the T-mobile version? Would love to get rid of that startup logo anyway
