Custom Car Dock - Moto Z Accessories

With the announcement of the new Incipio car dock I thought I would share the dock that I made and have been using for the last month or so.

It is a 3D printed slate of plastic with a Ram Mount ball attached which then attaches to an insert I built for the storage bin underneath the aftermarket receiver in my truck. I was using Automate till Android Auto was released just recently. AA is setup to start automagically when it connects to the Bluetooth in my truck. So far it has been vary reliable. Its a good setup.
I disassembled the Style Shell that came with the phone to determine how it was put together. Turns out it is a simple slab of plastic with metal cups that the magnets sit in and is then covered by a thick layer of vinyl. I then traced the shell and scanned the drawing. Using a Solid Edge (free for students, or at least those that still have there student emails still) I created a 3D model from the scanned trace. I used vernier calipers to verify the dimensions from several angles
I then got on www.3dhubs.com and found a local guy to print it. It only cost $16 to print. I had to ream out all of the holes. Everything was centered perfectly though. I think that is because the plastic was pretty thick.
I simply glued in the super strong magnets and screwed on the Ram Mount ball. I bought the magnets off Amazon from Zafos. Unfortunately they don't sell them anymore.
Here are some more pictures of the my setup.

Very nice!!

It was in the very first sentence. 7 words in. All one would have to do to see it is start reading the post. It was late and I simply couldn't help myself. And I was quite nice about it actually. I could have rudely pointed out that your reading skills needed work or something like that. I would have ignored it had your post been at all useful. Links with no note or explanation are extremely annoying. No one wants to guess the purpose of a link by what the page address says.
Good day.

Anyone can get the file from the link below. I've included the .par file so you can open it and edit in in Solid Edge. Note that the after printing, the holes on the original dock were slightly too small for the camera bump and the magnets. The holes on version 2 are a bit larger to compensate for that. I havent printed or tested it though.

[PROOF OF CONCEPT] DIY Home Dock

Threw this together with a little bit of planning at work. The picture below is just a proof of concept that the measurements work out. I'm going to head to my father's tonight in order to make one out of some materials he has about, probably aluminum. I'll post pics as soon as I get the final working product.

Will do. If everything goes according to plan then I'll post intructions and pictures so other users can reproduce a reliable dock on the cheap.
Or you could start a company and sell them..lol
Nice!
You might want to add a "stop" on the right hand side to allow for easy docking.
Not personally interested in a dock, but I subscribed to see the final product. I love seeing what people can build themselves

If I may ask/suggest why you are using screws in the construct? Try to use wood glue or wooden dowels to avoid the screws getting in your way later.
OR is that the workbench with a screw?
That is awesome.

@deliriousdroid: That looks nice, what kind of wood is it? Is it designed to work in both portrait and landscape mode?
I've got the ~$20 plastic dock that has the built-in spare battery charger in the back, but today, in my office, I had my car setup (Arkon) on my desk using the bean bag/friction mount. I really liked the fact that I could flip it from portrait to landscape, and adjust the angle, etc. I may have to try and combine the two...
Wow I love the grain in that wood. Very nice.

Kinda bumpin this thread, I was musing over an idea last night. How could we incorporate the power cable into this? I'd love to set it down for the night with the clock app opened and the phone charging, but I'm not really coming up with any ideas.

On my next dock, I am planning on buying a cable specifically for the project and in the side of the dock, have another strip of wood, make a hole the right size and glue it in. Currently I am just plugging my phone in for the night, hitting a app that keeps my screen on and leaving it on my home screen.
By the way, do you think there would be any demand for high end custom made phone docks?

Yeah I love this holder. Bought 2 just in case it ever breaks and they stop carrying it.
I own this case as well and it has been great so far. Not super thick and the kickstand, while not a marvel of engineering, works well enough. I do not use the holster, just the case.
I searched for all cases with a kickstand and this was really the only one I found and I love it. Protects the phone well.

Like the case, hate the clip so I popped it off. Used it for about a month and had no issues but I did worry about the lack of protection on the top and bottom. I now have a TPU case from cruiserlite and am quite happy with it. I will be switching back and forth with that and the kickstand.
Just as long as it's not the verizon silicone case you'll be fine.

Using a stylus with the Epic?

Hi all,
After playing with a Galaxy Note, I've gotten reminiscent about using a stylus from the Touch Pro 2 days. My question is: Has anyone used a stylus for the Epic? Are there any out there anyone can recommend? I realize it's not going to have the same interactive experience as the Note, I just want something to play around with. Thanks!

should work i've used other things some things wont work not exactly which one but. lol my car charger top pin makes my screen move if i use that haha
It would have to produce some kind of static from the tip. Either on it's own or derived from your skin and transmitted through the stylus to the tip. Our screen is capacitive and reacts from the electrical charge of our skin. The galaxy note was specifically designed for a stylus through the screen hardware and the type of stylus used. I'm not 100% that there are styluses that will work with our phones but I would assume so as the concept doesn't seem too difficult. I've never looked into it before. I'll do a Google search and see what comes out of it.

If you have the aluminum stylus with the black tip it works with the electrostatic screens.
Just found out Radio Shack sells one that works with any capacitive touchscreen device and is $15. A little pricey but I confirmed today that it works and it's a very nice quality stylus. Very soft rubber tip, strong aluminum casing, very light.

I sometimes use the back end of a 1960's papermate profile. It has a nice springy feel to it. Plus I like to use antique pens.
So I bought this one off amazon..
GTMax Touch Screen Stylus Pen (Black + Red + Silver) for Samsung Galaxy S2 / Epic 4G CDMA Cellphone
Been using this so far for about a week and its been great. No qualms with this at all and it was only $2.40 total, including shipping. Granted, the price has gone up about $.50 since I purchased (now its $2.40, when I purchased it was $1.90+$0.50 shipping).

The electronics don't do anything, they're just used for the construction and looks. Probably hard to imitate but every one can be unique! I put an NFC tag on it so it changes my settings for work automatically ( wifi, silent, etc..)
Oh and it works in landscape too.

thanks! The bottom one is from an old optical mouse, and the top/back one is from some switch controller on those baby swing things. I just kept them in my box of junk materials and eventually found some use for them. Then I just put 2 LEDs on the front to keep the phone from falling. They're not actually connected to anything, they just fit the theme

I bought this case. It is kind of tacky, but it does work with a tempered glass screen protector [which is the most important part].
The LEDs make for a good conversation piece, but that's about it. I probably overpaid and have some buyer's remorse, but function trumps style in this case.

It did but it landed face down. Fortunately I had a screen cover

Did you see that you can design your own icons?

Yes I did, that's a really cool feature! Apart from the issue you had this is a really good case to show off the phone
.
Just did my review of the LED case, I really like this case out of many Note 7 cases I have

I love how you can create your own icons. I had this case on my Note 4 a couple of years ago and I loved it but back then it was very basic.
So I bought this LED case a few days ago and can't wait to try it out on my new Note in 2 days time
