Need Help - How safe is RECALLED Tablet, if we use custom rom? - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Friends,
Its been long while I turned my replacement tablet on. My requirements are clear:
1. I would like to use it as android box. Always connect through HDMI
2. Root the tab to get more control and include patch for my gamepad
3. OS should support HDMI and OTG Y CABLE
4. Always connected to WiFi - internet
5. Kill switch should never get activated
So, for these requirements, will a CUSTOM ROM works??? Will a custom ROM stop killing my tab. If so, plz suggest a custom ROM, if anyone is using.
I installed linux4tegra on this tab for now. I would like to install android in it.
Appreciate ur help in providing the answer.
I hope this thread can be useful to others.
Thanks,
SRIHARI

If you use HDMI then no custom ROM will work for you. Read the kill switch thread and be safe.

Thanks for your reply...
Hmmm... In that case, I use good one with HDMI and old one with custom ROM... Will that work.
I want internet on both laptops... And none should get killed...
Old tab with Custom ROM (it should not get killed at any time)
New tab with Stock ROM

I have my recalled Shield Tablet mounted in my truck as a music / video / audiobook / navigation device. It is currently running Trafalgar Square's AICP 7.1 N nightly ROM. Its constantly plugged in to USB power and I have had absolutely no issues with overheating. I made sure that there is plenty of airflow around it, and I never use it for resource hungry applications so I don't really worry about it. YMMV, but its a pretty awesome device for what I'm using it for.
The only way you'll get HDMI support as far as I know is to use Nvidia's original ROM, read the thread on killing the kill switch to find out which file to delete so your tablet doesn't get wiped. The only other thing I could think of if you want a custom ROM is to use DLNA to stream content...

HDMI out works fine on blisspop custom rom

Wow that's great to hear....
As of now I'm using cm13. And HDMI works as well, but no sound...
Nice 2 play with two tabs at once ...

[ROM] Pipo Max S2 Stock English Firmware tweaked by mrsaccess

I got my S2 on Tuesday and thought that the default firmware had a few shortcomings. Hence I took the stock English firmware and tweaked it to my needs.
Maybe you will find my ROM useful too.
So, what I changed:
Enlarged the data partition to 2.5GiB. I did this for two reasons. Obviously one is so we can get more space for apps. The other is that inside the /data partition are not only stored apk files, but the application's data files (which get written and read frequently). When a partition on a flash disk gets full, it also gets slow. So hopefully with 2.5GiB you will always have enough free space to keep performance up.
Rooted and the new, open source Superuser included.
Replaced the default launcher with the latest Nova Launcher.
Included Titanium Backup.
Changed the read ahead of the flash memroy to 1024KiB from the default 128KiB. While there isn't an overall best setting, I feel that this helps a lot with Chrome, which had huge delays while trying to load a page from its cache.
Changed the default io_scheduler to deadline. it gives better responsiness.
Default notification ringtone changed to something that won't cause heart attacks.
I added proper OTG support. Our tablet supported usb devices only on the OS level and not on the Android apps' level. So while a hardware keyboard would work, camera tethering with DSLR Controller wouldn't. Maybe Pipo did that because the tablet's usb system isn't solid. USB OTG doesn't work always, but at least it always works after a reboot for me and it is awesome to control my DSLR from the tablet.
Added support for cifs (smb).
Removed some apps and widgets which I think aren't that useful.
You can flash it with RKBatchTool. The first boot will take a bit more time until it gets to the launcher screen.
There may be some S2 tablets with a newer front camera module. If that's your case, your front camera may not work.

I got CWM on my Pipo s2. I can install the ROM through there, yes?
Also, think we can see CM 10 on it anytime soon?
This ROM can only be flashed with the official tools, it doesn't support CWM, nor it installs it. If you flash it, you will lose CWM.
As for CM, I don't think we will ever see it. Chinese vendors do not give much information or any source code, so it is practially impossible to do a port.
Some guy started working on a CM port for RK3066 devices, but as far as I know he hadn't much success other than a very alpha rom for his device (not the S2).
Ah I see. Well thank you very much for providing this ROM! Is there any way you can provide a short step by step tutorial? I've downloaded the rkbatchtool but alittle unsure of how to proceed.
Great ROM .....Many Thanks For This Great ROM .... Now Downloading .. Please Check My PM And Please Reply ......
New dl links
hi mrsaccess, still possible to get new links for the custom S2 rom ? thx in advance.

[Q] Custom ROM without call possibilities

Hi,
It might be a stupid question, but I was wondering if it is possible to build a ROM with a very minimum features. No phone possibilities, no bluetooth, no gps, no sync with anything.... Turn it to a Ipod Touch like in someways...
I could use any ROM without using all these feature, but by removing all the unnecessary, could it be lighter and faster ?
I am asking that, because I have a aging I9000 and I would like to turn it up to a remote control only. I am currently using it for Spotify, my AV Receiver, XBMC, my NAS. So, actually, I just need WIFI, and maybe access to Google Play to install the apps needed, but it could be done by installing the APK directly.
That's it !
Thanks

ROM makes tablet act dumb...

So i used custom rom on my tablet so it wont get kill switch but the tablet is completely lagging...ive used many roms for it and non works fine. Playing fullhd movie is nightmare for me..sounds keeps getting stuck and screams DZDZDZDZDZDZ its really annoing...what do i do? Also lagging is terrible and many other things...i dont really know what to do...
If you are going to keep using the old one, just flash stockband remove the tegraota.apk updated via the instructions in the General su forum. And keep handy a fire extinguisher.
Sent back in time via Android 9.0 TimeText feature.
In my experience, there are very few ROMs that are as polished as the latest stock ones. As mentioned above, just remove the TegraOTA apk and/or folder (whichever one applies / makes you feel safe), and you should be good to go. I did that for my old one, and there's been no issues with it.

P6800 Searching for 4.2 ROM

Hi there. I own an old Gtab 7.7 (P6800) that I use as Satnav/OBD/... tool in my car.
I lived fine with stock 4.0.x until I bought a dashcam that has an app that needs at least Android 4.2
I tried a few ROMS (CM etc. ) in the past but they all had issues - and according to the descriptions they still have.
I need a ROM that has the following working properly: Bluetooth, GPS, WiFi, Mobile Data
Is there ANY rom with 4.2 or above out there that has no issues with any of these? I really would love to keep that device as it is still nice and old enough that it isn't worth stealing so I can keep it in my car no matter where I park
I don't care much about features as I only need to run 4-5 Apps and nothing else
Thx

Shield Portable Marshmallow Options?

I see there are several custom marshmallow ROMs for the Nvidia Shield Portable. I'm thinking of upgrading as I'm sick of always having to move my apps around and not being able to update them. Adoptable storage solves that issue.
The ones I've found are:
CM: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nv...t/rom-cyanogenmod-12-shield-portable-t3042192
LineageOS: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nvidia-shield/development/rom-lineageos-shield-portable-t3562831
RR: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nvidia-shield/development/resurrection-remix-t3465740
Which of these is the most stable and supported? It appears CM or LineageOS.
Are any shield features supported on these? Such as (in order of importance):
Console mode
Controller
Gamestreaming (using official app, not moonlight)
Gamepad mapper
Thanks!
I'm running CM13 for the same reason, adoptable storage. Controller works but most shield specific stuff does not and other apps are needed. Let me know which one you end up on. Haven't booted mine for a while and thinking of wiping it again.
LineageOS is the continuation of CyanogenMod, I wouldn't use the cm builds anymore. And wow, somehow I missed RR getting released, need to go take a look at it sometime.
As for feature support (should apply to all custom ROMs, but I can't be 100% sure about RR):
Console mode: Yes, works fine.
Controller: Built-in works, wireless does not. Been working on the wireless support for years. I can make them pair and work, but there's no user friendly way to do so yet. See the end of the shield apps thread in the tablet section for more info.
Game stream official: No, does not work. As far as I can tell, support for the tegra 4 was completely removed from the M version of the shield hub streaming. As such, I cannot fix it. Moonlight does work, I am told. Don't use streaming myself as I don't have windows.
Gamepad mapper: This is virtually impossible to port from stock. Tincore is the alternative, but is a pain to set up.
Thanks for the informative response! Sounds like LineageOS is the way to go. If I decide I'm going to keep my portable I'll probably flash LineageOS (I'm debating selling it as I bought a GPD Win, but it's found a use as an Android TV system for my wife... so I'm debating keeping it or selling it and buying a cheap chinese system).
I've posted an atv build or two in my cm thread. Working on making atv work better in lineage right now. Been having troubles the last couple weeks, but have a couple more devs looking at the problems now. Once those settle down, I'll run another build for roth. It worked really well for the short time I had it installed. Might even end up my normal install once the kinks get worked out. But if you're interested in atv, I am working on it. If you want a really nice dedicated atv system, the shield android tv is amazing. For kodi, retroarch, etc, etc. A bit pricy, but totally worth it for the features.
Thanks, I'll look into it, but it's just a kitchen TV machine. All she really uses it for is CrunchyRoll and YouTube (hence why a cheap chinese system would be perfect).

Thank you for doing all this work! As you saw based on the other threads, I am using LineageOS now. I haven't fully tested everything yet, but so far things are mostly working well.
