Hi,
I have just purchased a brand new (supposedly) Moto G 2015 2GB Osprey from Amazon.
When the screen goes to sleep I can sometimes turn it on again using the power key but it is not consistent. I should be able to just press the power key once and the screen should turn on right?
I also notice that I will hear the default sound for screen on, but the screen remains black, I can then hear default touch sounds on the screen but the screen remains black. Pressing the power key a random number of times, sometimes 2,3 or 4 times and the screen will light up.
Do you guys think I should RMA to Amazon immediately?
I own the 1GB model since a year ago and I have never seen these faults.
Something is wrong with your phone, it isn't normal.
Maybe it's fake, a copy. Never seen that bugs before, never seen someone reporting
That's a issue with moto display. Try disabling it and report back
How do I disable Moto Display?
It's not Moto display... I use that regularly and have no issues on my G3 or XPE. And it isn't fake, Amazon isn't going to sell a fake Moto G3 (are their any, it hardly seems worth it for a knock-off to be made of a low $$ handset). If you want to disable Moto Display to test, it's in the Moto app, but it isn't the issue unless it's a conflict with some other app you have.
You likely have an app that is causing the issue. Standard troubleshooting applies here, wipe cache partition then reboot into safe mode and test, if the problem still exists then reset to factory defaults and test again without loading any apps, problem continues get the device replaced, if the problem goes away, slowly add your apps back in until you find the cause, then get rid of that app.

This is straight from the box, from first boot, only default apps installed. I have Factory reset 3 times, switched off Moto Display, no change in behavior.
I'll send it back to Amazon.

Was at about 30% battery and the screen froze as in it wouldn't take any touch events. The backlight would react as if the screen wasn't touched. It seems like the touch events just were not registering but the phone worked in the background. Kernel issue maybe? I have been using faux.
Something similar ....
I had a similar experience on the 15th .... took my N5 off the Qi charger and the screen froze when i tried to unlock it.
I hit the power button and was able to unlock and get a few touches in before it froze again.
I was finally able (after much screen off/on cycles) to get down to the developer options and turn on show touches & show cpu usage.
... background processes looked fairly normal when the screen was frozen(touches showed as frozen) ...
I was rooted, stock rom except for xda user Jishnu Sur's N5 camera mod and running a couple tried & true root apps(Stickmount & QuickBoot). Thought some software issue might be jamming up the digitizer i/o causing it to freeze.
Reverted entirely to stock (the Team Win recovery was also experiencing screen freeze - buttons worked fine) including removing TRWP and re-locking the boot loader!!
The screen freezing problem persists ... my conclusion is that it's a hardware issue. :crying:
It's possible you are seeing the same thing, but I haven't seen anything in the forums to indicate it's a widespread problem.
Returning it for a replacement phone ... :fingers-crossed:
Hi,
same problem here from France.
I already returned a Nexus 5, after multiple freeze I tried to format data partition via bootloader, (no rooted phone, following google instructions for stock reset) then the phone crash wile formatting, it never wake up gain.
When I get a new one from google after one or two week same problem appears, and it's append more and more often, since monday my phone crash one time more every night, and all the day today.
A this time I'm still trying to load it sine I came back from work seven hour ago, battery still at 49%.
I think it's and hardware issue too.
I'm very disappointed about Google and I'll never by anymore LG products.
Thanks for reading.

Freezes tend to happen on custom kernels specially if you under-volt it too much. have you done that?

Last week I had the same problem with my new NEXUS 5. IT’S TOTALLY A HARDWARE ISSUE.
LG products are however not so bad in the JAPAN market but still we are expecting a lot from LG technology.
LG services suck.
I am facing the same problem with my Nexus 5. Unrooted, bought 7 months back from India itself, was working fine till around two weeks back, when the lags, screen freeze, blacking out n all appeared. Got it repaired twice at the LG centre. They changed the front display touchpad as well as the charging connector strip. The problem still persists.
Hello
The post is regarding the problems I've recently been facing with my phone, nexus 5.
I installed MM about a month ago and my nexus was working perfectly. However, after two weeks of the installation, my power button got extra sensitive and the phone would sometimes get into infinite rebote loops. I contacted Google and they said that it might be the faulty power button and asked me to factory reset. After factory reset the problem aggravated. In fact after two days of reset my phone would shut down and when I turn it on (through recovery) it will show Static noisy screen. Soon I figured out that if I allow my battery to deplet and attach it with charger, I can turn my phone on. However, as soon as i allow display to sleep, the problem begins again. When the phone sleeps, and I press the power button to wake it up, it shows noise.
So, I have increased the sleep time of my phone to help it stay alive for sometime while I look for a solution.
I would like to know, what according to you can be the problem? Is it the software or the display driver? Or is it the USB cable flex ( which can be the cause of problem as I read it somewhere)
I would be very grateful if you could guide and help me
Best regards.
Sidra
I am having the same issue. May I ask if you found a solution?
HI, I have the same problem....please can someone help us out here. Thanks
Sounds like it's the hardware causing the issue, not anything software/firmware. A new power button is extremely cheep off eBay (seriously, they sell them in bulk), so if you're not squeamish about opening your phone up, it might be worth the small cost for a new internal switch to see if this solves the issue. Go to ifixit.com for a teardown guide.
Hi,
I have Nexus 5 and was running good with Marshmellow and suddenly one day the screen started scrolling up. Restart or factory reset did not help. While starting the boot logo was also corrupted and I use to get is display with random pixels lit with different colors, mostly white and red. So have tried different bootloaders and even downgrading to 4.4.4 but the issue is still there.
Called up Google and LG as well. Since device is not under warranty now, it is going to cost for repair. So would like to know if there is any solution to this problem before I try the repair or give on this device.
Appreciate any suggestions. Thank you,
Sandeep.
Was the phone ever dropped? It's possible that there is a loose connection inside the phone. I suggest removing the back and inspecting the phone's internal components and connections.
If everything appears fine, it could be A problem with the lcd of motherboard, neither of which is cheap to repair. I suggest trying to find a used nexus 5, either with a smashed screen and working internal components or one with a working screen and damaged internals to troubleshoot your own phone.

I do not recollect dropping it. I would wait to see if any better option comes up. And will keep an eye for an broken Nexus to see if I can get the motherboard swapped. Thanks for ideas though.
I have had this phone for one week and unfortunately have a problem with the small display on the cover. The display intermittently crashes and you are no longer able to see the time, charge status, signal strength, or any notifications without restarting the phone. Interestingly the crash does not affect the display of charging info when it is on the wireless charger. I am working with Samsung to get this resolved and they have assured me that they will replace the phone if necessary. So far they have tried wiping the cache, and having it re-imaged at one of their authorized repair sites with no success. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this issue or have an idea about what could be causing it. BTW...... I really love this phone otherwise.

I have observed the same issue. I've noticed that it recovers eventually but it is annoying as well. I called the premier service but they have not acknowledged it is a software bug yet. They had me factory reset but I am still observing the same.
I can also confirm it is not due to the case they ship with, nor the leather case, or finger grime that may be conflicting with the capacitive sensor. The rest of the phone knows the main screen is closed. My suspicion (speculation) is that it is the software as the cover display is really the only new hardware portion, in regards to most of the components from S10 parts bin, or Fold screen tech which has been pretty mature from a design standpoint.
Love the phone, hope they they can resolve this in an update sooner or later. Please let us know if its common to all.
Thanks.
I have the same issue. Been using the phone for about 12 days and the cover screen goes bonkers. It will appear some time but only clock and battery life, can't use it for notifications nor calls nor selfie camera. Plus open phone to answer is not functioning
This is my second Z-Flip - had the original one on release day and now the 5g version. Yesterday, out of nowhere (for the first time on either phone) the cover screen went blank. It works still (I can change songs and answer calls, for example) but the screen is black. This is 100% a software issue. Called Samsung 'premier' which puts you in the line for normal support, when they pick up they transfer you to premier (makes no sense). They suggest a factory reset. Odd thing is 2 calls today actually showed on the display. No rhyme or reason. I have tried powering down, restart, and safe mode. Very frustrating.
I'm also having this issue, I had a different issue in the past where the phone would not recognise when it was opened or closed and just behaved like a regular smartphone with screen on off. The cover screen also came on at the same time as the main screen so basically the phone thought both were one display.
This time I am getting the issue as above, the screen is black, pressing power does not bring it up (always, sometimes it will randomly show and I can use it, before a factory reset I just did it wouldn't be functional as touch only worked halfway, I could drag it left or right but it would just stay where it was, thinking my finger was still on it.) if I press the power repeatedly sometimes it shows, sometimes it shows offset so only half the display lights up and has moved everything to that side and cropped it. It's completely a software bug, my phone has no scratches or dents and is in great condition. It's a newish model as my original Z Flip got replaced by my network by a 5G model.
I recently bought a LG G5 used. Perfect condition upon arrival, except for the Google lock. I'm taking care of the lock. My issue is the screen. I had it on trying to figure out the lock when my battery died. At this point my screen was fully functional. I plugged it in while powered off and exactly 50% was black, the other exact 50% was a collection of randomly generated colored pixels, looked like white noise from an old tv. I unplugged it, plugged it back in and now I get black screen. In a dark setting when plugging in the device I can visibly see the screen energize to black for a second then turn off again. Phone still charges fine. The LED turns on, phone still powers on like normal but no screen. This sounds like a software issue, but I really don't know. Now I'm consulting you, the xda people for help.
I'm having issues with my G5 as well but it's unrelated to your issue however while looking for a fix for mine I did see a view things about the issue you are having. I believe it because the GPU of the device has failed and the only fix is a motherboard replacement, unfortunately.

Would you send me a link to the info you found? I can't find any evidence of a similar error anywhere on the internet.

Yeah I saw this video on youtube:
Its not a G5 but a different LG but the problem looks to be the same as you described.
The LG G5 "half screen static" issue is one i've personally experienced. From what I could debug, this is an overheating issue with the system board. For proof, put the phone in a freezer to let its core temp drop down. After a while take it out of the freezer and surprise! The screen now works fine, proving the overheating issue (until the system warms up and screen starts glitching again).
Some videos on the net have talked you can fix this by opening the phone and putting new thermal paste on the sys chips area. I've done it all and the issue still persists (others have reported success), so any other advice would be appreciated.
I ended up buying another G5 on the cheap and have the other for spare parts in case.
Here are two videos that talk about the specific issue you experience, the other talks more about the paste

I do have a motherboard on it's way, and anyone looking for a motherboard for your LG G5 BEWARE! Double check your g5 for it's model number (mine is located inside the device under the motherboard for whatever reason). There are 9 variants of the G5, mine is LG LS992. I will reassemble my g5 and try the freezer trick, update on that later.
Do let us know if the freezer trick makes the screen work again, it seems this overheating issue has appeared over several LG G5 variants (mine was H830).

The freezer trick did not work, put it in a 0⁰ freezer at work for 30 minutes and nothing. My notification led still works and so does the vibrator so it's still just the screen. And also I bought a motherboard for a VS987 while mine was LS992. They look exactly the same, and I studied each one. And no the vs motherboard didn't work. I'll have to send this one back and reorder the right one.
5 stars to LG for designing a really easy to repair phone, minus 1 star for intentional life stunting, minus 1 star for generating 9 versions of the g5, and minus a star for hiding your model no and imei IN the phone requiring disassembly and a screwdriver to read.
