OK, so on boot I get this warning, "KERNEL IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING" after upgrading to latest stock firmware and re installing TWRP. I also note that when I try and do anything in TWRP it tells me that the /data partition can not be mounted and a couple of other errors. I understand that this is because the stock ROM encrypts the /data directory, no reason to doubt this, but it wasn't there before I flashed the stock ROM upgrade - done because I had a new version notification driving me made.
I have seen that I can wait for TWRP to add something to it's tools to fix this, if they are even looking at it. Or I can re-partition data via TWRP.
If I do the latter, if I use TWRP to make a copy of the data partition and restore after, would I be reintroducing the encryption?
If it does fix it and the TWRP restore introduces the encryption back, would Titanium restore everything without encryption?
Is it even a fix?
Advise sort here please....
did u ever solve this i also have it but im on holiday and unable to get access to any stock firmware... files are too big for international downloads. it will cost me like £30 to download the one file i need to flash using odin and it bothers me this could happen again after.
I modified the build.prop file to allow tethering to work something along the lines of tether_required_dun 0 to the bottom as described in many posts but the phone went immediately into boot loo.
TWRP is on and working correctly.
phone was rooted.
oem unlock ticked
i can adb to the phone correctly
i used to get recorevy is not seandroid enforcing. that changed to kernel is not seandroid enforcing. and i can now no longer boot.
bit of a strange one...

I did but I am not happy about the fix.
I had to wipe the data partition in the advance mode and reformat it. I always do things three times to make sure. SO effectively has to start from scratch with the phone set up. I didn't use the back up as it may have reintroduced the problem, so after I wiped the old backup and created a new, and then built the phone and created another new backup in TWRP.....
I still find certain apps don't work, like Cerberus - hidden, Cool Tool, APM+........
Hope it helps you.

Hi mate.
Yes unfortunately same boat here... ended up putting superman on but i lost all the last 2 weeks worth of holiday photos ive just taken and i leave in 3 days ffs. The rest i had pretty much backed up before i left. Just not often u get the chance to film a live octopus feeding in rock pools on a beach among the 3000 photos ive taken.
Ah well theae things happen. It is weird because everywhere i read people have great success doing what i did even on a stock rom non rooted so dont know why mine went pair shaped.
I spose the benefits are this rom is far superior to stock. Everything seems to work so far. Superman 1.17. Dont know of youve tried it but since your in same boat on a fresh install its really worth a look. Sorry to hear of ya loss.

Do you not put pics on external SD or have sync to google or OneDrive etc.... I was lucky in that respect as I keep nothing of any note on the internal storage and docs/etc are all sync'd It's the days of re doing settings that p me off. And Titanium never puts it back as you want really.
I think the prob is encryption. I believe that the stock ROM encrypts the data drive.
I am on stock, rooted. I am not happy with the stock and can't wait for a non stock build to come out - I don't think there are any yet, that are not built on the stock. Superman is modified stock, yes? How do you find it and what are the differences?

Same as you really but I moved everything before i left for my vacation. ive never actually worked out how to get the camera to save direct to the sd card if thats even poasible upto now so i just move them all every two weeks onto the sandisk extreme.
I cant use the auto sync in this country because the file sizes are so large of the photos that it would cost me more then buying a brand new dslr camera to upload one holiday on the fly. Lol
Yeah that totally grates me too tbh but these pictures really got my goat your right about titanium too. All the other ones are the same. The only backup program thats ever worked properly for me is the lg g4 h815 built in one its brilliant.
You are correct about the encryption i didnt think using that command would soft brick the phone or i wouldnt have done it before backing up. You have to format the data partition to remove the encryption which in turns wipes all your data.
I was on stock h3g uk rooted software but it was so locked down even with root it made life difficult. I dont like to stray too far away from the stock experience these days most are quite adept.
Superman is modified stock a lot of it is based on the nougat rom that is due out after MM. It also has the edge features and swipe bar etc.
Its slick fast and totally brilliant. Android pay doesnt work i dont believe but there is very little else.
No bugs to my knowledge
There are audio and volume enhancements as well. Camera enhancements. Kustom kernels.
It uses aroma inataller so you can choose what you want to install as well.
Definately the best rom ive tried for many years. Turned my boring galaxy into a sharp snappy customisable device that i am over the moon with. If only samsung employed some of these people...
Honestly if you can live with the one or two things that dont work its so much better.
You mention things don't work. what does not work?

I'm obviously new to this so bare with me.
I just rooted my Sprint HTC Hero and the first thing I would like to do is use it to tether. I've tried both versions of Android_wifi_tether (1.52, 1.6) but have had no luck in getting it functional. Basically; It broadcasts the signal (I'm at work so the only way to test it was with a Macbook) just fine. The Macbook even connects to it and my phone shows "3KB down 7.8KB up" meaning it detected something has connected. Once that happens nothing else works. The Macbook indicates it has no internet connection.
I was wondering if anyone has been able to get this to work? I'm a little hesitant on installing a custom ROM because it seems like a lot of work and I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to Linux.
Also, can my phone still be updated or is that still unkown? If I install a root app and the update kills root does that mean I lose it entirely or just for anything I try to install post update?
As a side note: Someone should make a post with step by step guides to follow. What I mean by this is put the guides in chronological order.
1) Root your phone (guide link)
2) Run Nandroid backup (guide link)
3) etc.
Anyway, really appreciate the work! This is exciting.

Currently the only phones that have wifi tethering working are the ones who installed MoDaCo's ROM...something in there is configured differently to allow it to work.

How functional is the ROM?
The one thing I'm scared of is that if I install a ROM I'll be dependent on this community to make future things work?
I mean, can you still access the Market? What about future updates? Will applications I purchased already still be available?
Like I said, I'm still fairly noobish.

No sweat! If you look at my join date and postcount, you can see I'm not exactly the veteran around here either.
The MoDaCo ROM doesn't modify very much yet...just adds functionality (it's not the heavily optimized kernel that the GSM users have for example). I'm finding it fairly stable...there's a few quirks but those have fixes pretty easily found so far.
I can still purchase from the market...the stuff you purchased already is tied to your google account, not your phone. I bought Docs2Go before I rooted and flashed and I was able to redownload and install without any hassle or added cost.
On a custom ROM, future updates do depend on the person who is building the ROM. However, MoDaCo has proven pretty reliable thus far in keeping up with releases so it's a bit of a trust thing, do you trust MoDaCo to continue that trend or would you rather place your trust in the manufacturer? (It's a preference thing and willingness to risk either way).
The upside is that once you root to a recovery image (Not even changing your OS), you can take a Nandroid backup of your phone, which is an image you can drop back on there to get back to stock/manufacturer spec (as if you never left).
Any changes to your phone since the backup will not show up but that's kindof the risk.

This is somewhat confusing for me. My phone is currently rooted. If I restore it factory default will it still be rooted?
If not,
Then should I restore to factory default first, take a Nandroid back up (this looks difficult), then root my phone?
The recovery image is basically replacing the "Factory reset" image, right?

Ah ok...the recovery image is like a second mini OS you are booting into that has menu options and specializes in updating your phone with a custom ROM, running Nandroid for backups, and enabling you to mount your SDCard to your computer, so installing that doesn't actually do anything to your phone's running OS.
Nandoid takes a backup of the phone's OS (the one you use every day) as it is right now. It places the backup onto your sdcard under a folder called "nandroid" (where you can take a copy of it and put it on your computer to be safe). So whenever you Nandroid your phone, it's taking a snapshot of how your phone is currently configured (the whole thing) and if you restore from that three weeks from now after doing a bunch of things...it restores to the phone as if you hadn't done anything to it in those three weeks.
So to make an example: if you take a backup of your phone right now (rooted, right?) and then you do a bunch of things to it...then restore from that backup, it's as if you didn't do any of those things you did since the backup (but it will still be rooted since you backed up a rooted phone).
Second Example: If you nandroid your phone when it's running MoDaCo's ROM...when you restore it, it will be running MoDaCo's rom and configured however it was configured then.
I wouldn't worry about trying to get to factory default first...HTC has an official utility that can get you back to the state your phone was in when you first openned it out of the box. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622)

Great, this really clarified things.
I love technology but, like most of these things, it's very overwhelming at first.
Everyone help! I just updated my tf700 to the newest update which was supposed to be minor. Everything went smooth but upon boot up everything went wrong. Every single app force closes upon unlocking the lock screen. I get a pop up for just about every single app that's trying to start saying sorry the app has closed. Oddly, any app that was originally on the device works OK. I did a normal reboot and then again I saw the upgrading message and another message saying optimizing apps and it counts through the apps its optimizing. Then again when I reboot fully it does the same thing. I did a cold reboot and it seemed a little smoother but then again I had the same force closes and error messages. And still only the stock apps will function, anything and everything else force closes upon opening.
I've never even heard of errors or problems such as this. I have no idea what to do and I have lots of data on the device I don't want to lose and can't lose. By the way I am rooted and I did not uninstall any stock apps. Just froze a couple. Build # now 10.6.1.14.10-20130801
Please any and all suggestions!
Ps - under kernel version it says (concerned about name cancer):

There's your problem...
Sorry mate, but I can't help myself - attention everyone, here comes a rant:
I cannot believe how many people do not backup the data on their tablets! This is the second time in as many days that I read: "Something unexpected went wrong and I cannot loose my data".
If you did not back it up the question is not if you loose it, the question is WHEN!
This is a portable device! Pre-destined to be lost, stolen, dropped, submerged, spilled upon, run over by trucks - and those are everyday scenarios which are LIKELY. Don't even want to get into freak accidents... It's so easy to protect your data now-a-days! There's Dropbox in conjunction with Dropsync, there's Google Drive and a host of other solutions. There is no excuse for having only one copy of important data...... End of rant
To your problem. Before you apply a stock update you have to replace/unfreeze all stock apps. Usually the update just fails if you have frozen system apps - I do not know what went wrong in your case.
How did you update? OTA or manually?
It sounds as if your data partition is corrupted since the stock apps (installed in /system) work, but your user apps (installed in /data) do not. But that your system apps work is the good news! At least you didn't brick your tablet.
One of the stock apps is the file browser. See if you can copy your precious data to a microSD. And I'm only talking about data like pictures, files, video, projects. Don't worry about your apps.
If the file browser cannot see your data you're gonna have to get into the area of data recovery tools - lots of research ahead of you there.....
Another possibility may be - if you can access your tablet from your PC through USB - to ADB pull files off your tablet, check if your computer recognizes your tablet.
Once you have your data safe (or given up on it) you can perform a factory reset and possibly have to reflash the firmware.
BTW, if you did not protect root with Voodoo Rootkeeper before the update or if you flashed the full firmware (as opposed to doing an OTA update) you also lost root. And Asus plugged the hole Motochopper used in the latest firmware version. At this point 10.6.1.14.10 is not rootable without unlocking.

I would just wipe and start over, even if you get it functional again you could end up with problems.
Hmmm - I too think you are going to lose your data here as I can't see how you can recover without wiping if everything is force closing now.
BTW don't worry about the kernel version being cancer that is Asus naming convention. They have been using planets and have now run out so they are now using astrology instead of astronomy which is rather odd but there you go.
Previously we had mercury, venus, jupiter, uranus etc now we have aquarius and cancer......
What don't make sense and I can't accept, I've updated this device 4 times now total and never had a problem like this. Also, I've updated a few devices with frozen apps and had no problems. Are frozen apps really the cause? I can't see it.
And if I do have to wipe, and I really don't want to, will I still be rooted after wiping and is there a way to back up things since I can't use 3rd party apps? (Also, I used voodoo)
It just seems like something went wrong with the update, say something initializing or cache problem, and im sure there's an easy fix.
Please, keep the ideas coming...
I guess, I just need to clerify , stock bootloader, stock ROM, but rooted??

Correct, stock rom rooted. No interest in custom roms. I know there's gotta be something simple, maybe even a chkdsk in linux or something. I just hate to wipe n start over. My files seem to be intact and non stock apps start to open for a split second then they force close.
Any responses guys? Would really appreciate any help.

Yea, wipe, and no you won't keep root on a stock rom wipe. As I said previously even if you managed to "fix" the problem you would be creating potential for lockups/forced reboots. Your also not the first to have issues when upgrading with sys apps frozen, look around the forum, its been discussed before. Sucks, but there it is.
I have the same issue, and I can't remember freezing any apps. I don't have any critical data that I can't loose though. Still it sucks to have to wipe if there's another way.
Stock, locked bootloader, rooted. Temp unrooted using OTA Rootkeeper and did the OTA. Then upon the next reboot, all apps FC. All earlier updates has worked flawless. :/

boy, i can't believe how close i was to actually going forward with this OTA when it "pooped" up in the notification area. good thing i had just been reading xda forums and i saw a couple posts bout ppl losing root and whatnot with said update.
now i am a happy camper on Cromi-x =D
best bet as a few already said is to try to extract your data from the thingy, and wipe it out, if you wanna take a n00b advice, if you're close to the end of your warranty period, go ahead and unlock it then proceed to cromi-x it. i was of the same position as you back when i bought it, not interested in custom roms and whatnot, just root...... but since my warranty was expiring next month anyways, and it had grown considerably sloppy and laggy, i figured out, why not? and i gotta tell you, it was the right thing to do.
hands down
anyways, good luck on your recovery.
I wiped and downgraded to .8 and will happily stay there for now. Maybe until I unlock the bootloader in the future.

If you don't have it download Titanium Backup, hit Menu and wipe Dalvic cache. Reboot. The reboot will take a while because the Dalvic has to be rebuild - so don't panic
If that doesn't do it, I'm fresh out of ideas.
I tried to wipe via the stock recovery, but all the FC's was still there, and what's worse was that because of the FC's I couldn't finish (or quit) the "Set up your tablet" thingie. I always crashed on setting up a gmail account. Didn't matter if I was connected to the internet or not, or if I declined setting it up. So I had to do everything from the stock recovery.
Downloaded the .8 firwmare, unpacked the first .zip file, renamed the second .zip (to EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip) and put it on an empty micro SD, made sure the SD-card was FAT32, booted to recovery (Power Vol down for 5 sec) and installed it via RCK, Android stock recovery.
Thanks for the tip, though. It might have worked. I don't know.
Hey guys. Forgive my noobity but I could do with some help and might have a unique problem although I dare say someone has had this or similar.
Firstly, after putting a 64GB stick in my tablet the other day, it all went badly wrong. I had done it before with my previous 64GB that had been playing up so I sent it back and got a new one. The new one seems to be where it all went pear shaped. I might add, the 64GB is for my phone really but my phone cam was playing up so I was swapping it over and stuff... anyway the card itself seems fine in my phone.
Anyways... now my ampe tablet is suffering some strange effects that have changed. initially it would not boot up unless I redone it with the official firmware.. but then wouldn't boot up again, unless I did the same thing over and over. then one time it just refused to boot up past the initial boot screen. I gave up for weeks then picked it up again two days ago.
Now I give it the firmware installed using pheonix again and it booted up. Ahh I thought... lets play. Now I plug it into the pc but the pc says I need to format the 5GB internal partition. So I did. I then looked how to fix the fact that the tab still says it has 0.00kbs internal storage in settings. Then after a while it came up saying 5GB so i copied some files onto it.. great. But I still can't install apps as I found when trying to do this tested working fix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJlpek6w624
I then read about using android commander to move busybox from xbin to bin in the system folder but mine is already there.
So now I am stuck. I can't test if my tab is rooted for the youtube link fix above although this is what I said to Nayeem on youtube:
================
Hi Nayeem. I'm really struggling with this. At first my tab was staying at the 2nd initial boot up screen after I put in a 64GB SD card. Using pheonix I managed to get it to boot by reinstalling the updated official rom from szampe but every reboot back to square one. I left it alone for weeks and came back to it, reinstalled the factory rom again and now it will boot up everytime but it has factory reset every time. I cant run the apps you supply for some reason. Everytime I have rebooted the tab, and connected back to pc it says I need to format the internal 5GB partition. I don't know if I have rooted it properly as I can't check. The commands you give above, work as it changes the location proven when I 'get' it. I'm really stumped. I'm trying out a method someone said about moving busybox from sys/xbin to sys/bin but it's already there (using android commander) so I am really stumped now. When I format the partition, it allows me to copy files to it.
================
So far I am stuck with boot up being a factory reset and the partition needs formatting and although the tablet seems a little laggy, everything I have tried works including wifi and incoming email alerts after logging into google account for playstore but no apps will install or update. the best warning I get is there is no memory to install anything and Nayeems method of moving the install location to the sd card seems to work but nothing will install still saying NOT INSTALLED when I try.
Sorry for the long winded thing but I am really new to all of this.
My hat is off to you if you read all of this and can offer a solution so i can give this tablet back to the kids.
Do you have an installed recovery
Try installing a recovery and wipe data and cache. If it does not work u have to repartition ur tablet

I am gonna look into this tonight and see what I can find out. I really don't know exactly what I am doing outside of getting pheonix up and sending a standard rom back to it as previously mentioned.
How would I repartition it ? Sounds stupid asking as i can build pcs... just want to make sure I am doing the correct method.
So I had cm12 installed and something happened to where my.phone was lagging so I said screw it and reflashed, while something happened and now I tried to while everything. Well I think I did something wrong because I lost all my apps in the app drawer, but when I go into file manager all my stuff is still there, but now the last couple times I tried to reboot the charging light was flashing red to yellow, but when I take the battery out and put it back in it reboots fine back to the screwed up home screen. Still with all my apps and pictures. Viewable in file manager.someone please help I'm freaking out thinking my phone is screwed up for good ....
Very hard to understand you. What ROM did you flash to now? Does TWRP work, can you get into TWRP?
Yes I can get into twrp, basically it threw me back into my cm12 ROM with none of my apps, and I tried to reflash Google apps and it didn't work,so if I can get into twrp is there a way to fix this by doing like a general full factory reset? And if so exactly how do I do that? I dunno this sucks....I dont wanna try anything else until I kinda have an idea what to do, don't wanna screw it up anymore

If you don't know how to factory reset you probably shouldn't be flashing in the first place. I highly suggest just doing a clean flash and flash Gapps right after you flash CM 12. In order to wipe data, you just click wipe in TWRP.
No I know how to factory reset lol.it's just I did that and when it would go to restart I got little error code up in left hand side of screen. But it doesn't matter because thanks to androidrootz I downloaded New firmware connected it to pc and completely reinstalled operating system. So I'm not rooted or anything and I'm back to square one, .but much better than where I was at.
If your custom Rom was bugging out it could have been a corrupted download. Sometimes all you can do is start from scratch. If you want to flash custom, you need to expect these things. Remember that this is a development site. I have seen where the same Rom acts differently on the exact same phone model. This could be due to a variety of things such as microscopic differences in hardware (this is one of the reasons phones of the same model handles being overclocked more our less than others), settings, tweaks, or apps installed.
Oneplus One on 5.1.1 (12.1) on jgcaap's 11/30/2015 build. I used to be really into flashing and modding phones but have since moved and changed jobs. I just haven't been able to enjoy this hobby lately, or several others. Over the last month or so any time I reboot the phone it is missing several apps when it comes back on. This happens whether I manually reboot, or if an error causes it reboot on its own. This morning it rebooted on its own and lost Google Play Services... Now I can't use the market, and many of the apps I have cannot work either.
I want to install a new ROM. I am concerned with the process because I will be coming from such an old build. I am going to start researching ROM's but I need to get it done soon. I hate to be the guy who shows up not having done his research. Since this is the "help" forum I was hoping someone would be willing to give me a little guidance. I just need a reliable ROM, doesn't have to be the fastest or too fancy. I will post up here when I decide which one to try but I am completely open to suggestions.
In the short term I plan to re-install gapps. I found the old tkGapps thread and downloaded the mini modular package. So hopefully doing that will buy me some time.
Thank you for reading, and any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Looks organized! I'll give it a try. I will read about it tonight while it is downloading. I live remote now so sloooow internet. It will give me some time to read.
So, it won't cause any issue going straight from 5.1.1 to this 7.x.x ROM? Years ago on Samsungs it had to be done in steps sometimes.
Thank you so much for the reply.
Installed with no drama! I was so concerned there would be some kind of Samsung-esque step maneuver/install this kernal then flash this rom, then after that install the ROM stuff... So easy!! Thanks!
Questions:
1. do I need Busybox? I run a few root apps. I don't know if we still use this.
2. is Titanium Backup fully functional in this build? I used to back up some of my more important apps then restore them with data. Of course no system apps.
3. Can't remember #3 so #3 is Thank goodness this fixed my phone! Thank you Sir!

Problem still exists with new ROM.
I was out of town yesterday and thought my phone was working correctly. Some of my google contacts were missing but that was easy enough to address. Today I rebooted my phone to install super su using twrp. I haven't had to root this phone in literally 2 years. I read here to install super su in recovery. Here's the problem. When the phone was booted up it is now missing about 40% of the apps I had previously installed. I installed all of them from the play store manually. Now I am starting to think my phone has a hardware problem, which makes me sad. I really love this phone.
I did a quick search trying to find someone with a similar problem but was unsuccessful. I haven't been able to search more thoughouly yet. If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them.

Could you tell me which SuperSU you flashed?
Today this is the one I installed. https://download.chainfire.eu/1220/SuperSU/SR5-SuperSU-v2.82-SR5-20171001224502.zip I believe it is version 2.82.
When I installed the ROM it asked me at the end if I wanted to install super su, because twrp didn't detect root. I slid the bar to allow it, but I never got root access. That is why I tried the one I manually downloaded today.
In case it makes a difference I am using an older version of twrp. It was the good one to use back then. I don't know what version it is, and I am afraid to reboot my phone to find out.
Any ideas on this?
I have been unable to get root. So I haven't been able to use any root tools to work on it. Can't backup or restore apps. I wanted to try a trim app to trim the nand.
If I don't come up with a better idea before tonight I plan to reinstall DotOS again with Gapps. Then just try to not ever reboot the phone. I can't afford a new device right now. I may just have to flash it fresh every week or two. I guess that will keep my phone light.
I have installed 2 different ROM's now and this problem persists. If my phone reboots it will delete about half my apps. If it was a Samsung I would "Odin back to stock" and hope for the best. I don't think that is possible on this device.
If I find a solution I will post here about it. Otherwise this problem is a death sentence for this phone. I am only posting this now so if this happens to someone else's device they can see how it went with mine.

I appreciate your help MR. AK. I had seen that thread but didn't realize what it would do. I flashed my phone back to stock using the files and directions in that thread. after i was done I let it run like that for a short time then installed a custom ROM and Gapps. That was Sunday and now on Tuesday I have installed most of my apps and rebooted the phone 3 times. It hasn't lost any apps! *knocks on wood* So far so good! Now I just have to read up on that screen cable issue. The bottom still smears out sometimes.
Thanks again for the help Mr. AK. I used to be into flashing all the time but have hit hard times. I have't been able to keep up with everything like I used to. I have been modifying phones since before the Moto RAZR came out. Used to be a member at motomodders.net which is now defunct. I hope to get back into it soon. XDAdevs is a great community. Happy new year everyone!
