[Q] Phone won't boot when there's an SD card in the SD card slot - Sony Xperia L

What could be the reason for this behaviour? It's got to be a hardware thing, but could it be fixed by me somehow - or should I just give in and send it in to a repairsman?
FYI, I bought this phone used, and even its' previous owner complained about this problem. This didn't bother me at first, as SD card prices were high back then, but storage now is cheap as ****! I'm kinda angry now, actually.
I did try with a variety of SD cards, and I also did try formatting them - but not a single one worked.

Well
1) If you are on Sony's stock ROM - try Cyanogenmod 13 (or even 14). See if it boots when you are on these roms.
2) If you are on custom ROM then probably custom ROM is the reason - flash another custom ROM. Or even stock to see if it works.
3) If the two above failed then the reason is hardware related.
4) It is most likely because of your nickname @stuckbootloader

I've already tried the first two - I'm more or less aware that it's a hardware problem; I was asking whether this could be fixed by me or not.

HTC Desire USB/BT/FM Issue - who is involved

Hi there,
as you may know, some owners of a desire have an issue with their USB/BT/FM functions. For example only fastboot works but no adb / mass storage ...
So, i thought opening this thread to collect your issues, please post the following informations:
Bootloader Infos
Rooted or not
Which rom
Have you used mass storage switch in recovery
Do you use a2sd or a2sd+?
If there are enough answers i will send the collected infos to paul from modaco, who tries to adress the issue.
no usb-bt-fm
bootloader 0.75
original rom 1.15.405.4
when does it happen for you
Also posted om Modaco
Bootloader 0.75
Stock ROM 1.15.405.4 Rooted + App2sd + dalvic
Yes, I used Mass storage in recovery
Issue startet when I transfered the MCR custom fra PC to phone via recovery
I loaded a rom amended with root permissions, not happy I restored everything to its original state with the 1.15.405.4 but now no longer works usb-bt - FM ... and access to most recovery so I can not load the rom recovery .. . Help
From what i know the guys looking into this have problems to dress the trigger of the brick, so all infos on how and when ar great
Bare in mind that the rooting process was at your own risk: no-one (HTC or Paul) will take responsibility if features are no longer working.
Personally, everyone works fine on mine including adb/mass storage. I don't actually see why it'd break.
OP, what OS are you using? I had to add some udev lines into Ubuntu as otherwise adb would work but Mass Storage would fail (on my netbook, even adb wouldn't function without adding the android rules).
I know it's our risc, but hey without some investigation no progress, right?
Btw. Paul is looking into this but no ETA for now
I had exactly the same issue as you lot, only difference was that my new rom flash was interrupted by me knocking the phone and the battery falling out!
I was on evil's 1.0 and decided to change to his 1.1. In the middle of the phone formatting during the flash, I knocked the phone and the battery dislodged causing it to lose power. I had the sd card formatted and was already using a2sd. Turning it back on and restarting the root process from step 1 on Tiny Core Linux got me back with a semi working phone. I had no BT, no SD card, and didn't check the FM radio. It also started to lose signal and would require a reboot to get it back.
I tried unrooting it using paul's method and it was still the same. I just took it back to the shop and acted stupid. They gave me a brand new boxed one, no questions asked I'm scared to try flashing again now though lol.
0.75
Modaco R2 with A2SD+
Yes i have used USB-MS (still works)
no usb connectivity from within android.... but adb works
Bootloader 0.75, tried a few different ROMs (primarily eViL's, tried some MoDaCo), and I've definitely mounted the SD from within recovery. Every single ROM swap I've done was accompanied with a full wipe and SD partition afterwards.
So far I guess I've just been lucky. USB still works, though it can take a long damn time to get recognized in Windows if I'm syncing through the Desire; if I take the SD card out and pop it in a reader, it pops up instantly.
So: .75, lots of ROMs, definitely mounted SD from recovery, always full wipe and format. No issues. Supremely lucky, apparently. :/
Hboot 0.80 o2 Germany ModacoCustomRom r3.
Today after reflashing MCR3! Before all was very well the only thing was that iwasnt able to mount my sdcard without a witget!
Bootloader 0.75
MoDaCo r3 Rom with app2sd+
I used Mass storage in recovery
Issue startet after I flash the jit patch,it can't use recovery again
Can you all confirm that you had a boot loop at some point during your flashing?
The conversations on Modaco now have me convinced that this is triggered when you go through a boot loop of three cycles.

No, not for those who've been bitten, but I think the rule for those of us still flashing is:
1) Flash rom (or update.zip for kernel, make changes to system, etc) in recovery
2) reboot
3) immediately do adb logcat on your PC and watch first boot like a hawk
4) if logcat reveals that your device is bootlooping, PULL THE BATTERY IMMEDIATELY. Reboot into recovery (which should count as a "successful" boot, and reset the counter) and flash a known good ROM, restore your backup, whatever.
Fixing those phones that are dead is unfortunately a task for a greater mind than mine.

Clockwork Mod Not Flashing ROMS

Hello, please let me know what I'm doing wrong, I've looked exhaustively for a solution to my problem on my own but I can't seem to find one:
1.) Rooted my G2x
2.) Installed Clockwork ROM Manager
3.) Copied two separate Gingerbread ROMs, Cyanogen 7, and Modaco into Root Folder (no sd card, just phone storage)
4.) Tried flashing both Roms multiple times with Rom Manager by both rebooting into recovery and installing from .zip (this option won't display either of the ROMs, just the log file folder.) I have tried installing .zip from SD in ROM Manager, and the phone just reboots as if nothing has happened.
*I believe ROM Manager does have difficulty mounting the phone storage, as it takes a full twenty count before attempting to flash the ROM.
**I don't know if this helps, but I have not received the OTA Gingerbread update from T-Mobile (even when my phone was unrooted), and when I prompt for the OTA update, I receive a "connection error" message. The LG Updater Tool indicates that my phone is "up to date" when it clearly, is Froyo 2.2.2.
Any help would be greatly appreciated with this issue guys, I usually scour forums for answers to my questions or fumble my way through it myself, but this has really sucked out lots of hours from my life.
No external sd card
You have to have a external to flash roms if im not mistaken
when you install recovery there are 2 choices external storage and internal storage if you dont have an sdcard reinstall clockwork using the internal option. that should do the trick for you.

I am going to try with an external SD card. Also, I am unsure of how to flash it to use internal storage, I checked the settings through ROM manager and couldn't find out how to do it. Is this something I access during Recovery mode? Thanks for the suggestions so far guys, I'll definitely post with results.

I can't quite tell if you used rom manager to flash CWM, but if you did then make sure to use nvflash. I don't know if it could cause things not to work, but it's the only way to guarantee you can always get into recovery. As people have said above, try to use external, although I hadn't read anything about problems with using internal to flash roms, at least if nvflash has been used.
I'll assume you've already heard of wiping/factory reset and all that since you joined a few years back, but make sure to do it when going to a new rom. As for the update issues, I would say just restore stock froyo, maybe from the nandroid tgagunman created if something is wrong with yours, factory reset it just to be careful, unroot using superoneclick, flash stock recovery using tgagunman's one click recovery flasher, and make sure usb drivers are up to date.
If you really can't get the new baseband and roms working after all that... tell t-mobile you can't get the update and ask for a new one haha.
Thanks Guys...
Danish, Eagle, Water, thanks a lot to all of you guys. I was able to flash a new ROM using an External SD card, I'm still having problems finding a ROM that is stable and is compatible with all of the apps I want to use (I'm currently having difficulty installing Tooyoou on the Bionix ROM I downloaded, which is otherwise AWESOME). I mean, it's not that big of a deal, but I'd like to get my extra $2.50 a month from the program.
Oh and NV Flash...
NV Flash helped me when I messed up my G2x's ability to boot into recovery with a Cyanogenmod 7 ROM build. Here's a link to a guide that helped immensely for anyone who finds themselves in this thread with a similar issue:

Please help solve software issues w/ Captivate i896. Advice on installing custom ROMS

Hello everybody,
I´ve got a Rogers Captivate i896 with Firmware version 2.2 (stock Rogers firmware(Canada), flashed 1 year ago, upgrading from 2.1 stock)
Kernel version 2.6.32.9
Modem version UXJL1
Rooted, unlocked and 1 click Lagfix
I´m on Rogers network.
Problems:
1) Many applications stop working once updated. IM+ version 4.xx works, anything higher crashes on start. Same story happens with LOTS of apps from Playstore, so I´m forced to be careful when updating apps. This is becoming super-annoying.
2)Recently, installed DROIDVPN and TUN.KO installer to use Dell voice on an Unlimited Mobile Browsing plan(crippled data for WAP browsing). It worked beautifully for 1 day, now starting DROIDVPN or TUN.KO makes the phone restart.
3)I´d like to get rid of built-in garbage, most of which I do not use, to have more control over running apps, especially those that hang themselves into start-up.
4) I´d like to get better battery life. I use my phone more and more, I´ve got 2 batteries and and external charger, and yet i sometimes have trouble getting to the end of the day without my phone dying/I]
Solutions.
I imagine that the only explanation for apps that simply refuse to work is that they are designed for newer Android systems. This happened with Skype that didn´t work with Eclair, but does work with 2.2.
Should I upgrade to ICS?
I have some experience flashing, yet I´m far from an expert. What´s the most fail-safe plan of actions? Would the following work:
1)Backup everything using TitaniumBackup
2)Install custom bootloader that would allow me to flash install.zip from external SD card
3)Choose a custom ROM based on user feedbacks, like Cyanogen MOD.
4)Restore all the apps
5)Experiment with different modem firmware to see which gives me best performance
I no longer have time to tinker around in the dark, so I´d like to have a plan before I get started. Any input on the possible solutions to the problems I´m experiencing?
Thank you in advance.
All the info you need on how to flash (specific to Canadian / Rogers version of Captivate):

Modems for specific region:

Just a question: why haven't you upgraded to Rogers official GB?
And BTW, ICS is a massive improvement over 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3.
I have a great experience with this ICS Rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522881
But there are others that are just as good I'm sure.
My 2 cents:
Stay away from ICS. It has the ability to damage your SD card.
Use this post to upgrade to gingerbread. Then use the utility in my signature to get root and cwm. Then choose a GB based ROM that suits your needs. May I suggest Legend?
¨Use this post to upgrade to gingerbread. Then use the utility in my signature to get root and cwm¨
Wouldn´t it be wiser to get clockwork mod before any upgrading just in case things go bad? I vaguely remember using clockworkmod last time I dealt with flashing, isn´t it a loader that allows you to load install.zip from SD card? Or would flashing a new system wipe out the mod as well?
How exactly can ICS damage SD card. Are you talking about the external SD or the built-in SD storage in the phone?
I´ve read partially the threads on Legend and Android Open Kang Project - captivatemtd - Milestone 6. Both sound pretty good. As far as you guys know, which rom is known to give best battery life?
If you're going to upgrade to a custom rom that is Gingerbread or Higher, you will need the Gingerbread bootloaders. That is why I say to go to stock Gingerbread first.
ICS can cause the Encryption Unsuccessful bug as seen here. It will cause you to lose all access to the built-in SD storage. It doesn't happen to everyone, but when it does, you'll wish you had heeded my advice.

[Q] SD Card keeps unmounting

Hi,
I have a normal HTC Sensation and I have the problem that my SD storage keeps unmounting quite quickly after the phone has booted. I have tried two MIUI ROMs so far, one based on ICS 4.03 and the other on JB 4.1.2, both have done the same thing (the issue is what made me try the JB ROM.
I have tried two microSD cards, a 32GB samsung class 10 (new) and a 8GB kingston class 4 (came with the phone which was a replacement recieved on Tuesday). Both of these cards become unmounted and the phone will say the USB storage was removed. When I reboot I am able to use the SD card for a little while again before it becomes unmounted.
I also tried formatting the 32GB card using my laptop to see if that helped (FAT32), it didn't however.
Both of these cards work in recovery, I used each to put a new ROM on the phone in the first place, and they mount successfully there. So what is the issue here?
Since both the roms you tried are MIUI, I'd try an AOSP or Sense based rom first. You never know. If that doesn't work, you could try to return to stock completely by flashing a RUU.

I'll consider doing that if it happens again, although *touches wood* it hasn't happened again since then, working with both SD cards again. I'm not sure what the problem is/was, I've had it happen on a stock ICS ROM before and ended up RMAing the phone.

Hi, and welcome to XDA!
My guess is that the custom ROM decided to go haywire. You could do a factory reset (I have a guide in my signature link - follow "Something" - on how to reset with custom ROM, which includes reflashing GApps), that may solve the issue, but you will lose your app settings in the process (just be sure to do a backup while in recovery before wiping anything).
If that doesn't work, try a different ROM. This device has dozens, with a couple fairly recent (read: Kitkat) offerings. You can find them in the Development section.
If still no go, you may have a hardware issue, and our support would sadly be out of scope.
Let me know if you need clarification on any of this, I am happy to help out here, if you are willing to get your hands dirty. Also, feel free to browse/search this forum (and development) for any other questions you may have as well (replies can take a while ).
Hope this helps.

Thanks your quick reply.
It is hard work
I try flashing other rooms (with full wipes):
- Baked 6: wifi not switching
- CM 9+lewa: no wifi
- Milestone 6: no wifi
- KK: install aborted
- Mik touch: freeze during reboot
- Baked 8: flash is okay but: Unfortunaetly, the process com.android.phone has stopped. System UI has stopped.
I think how the ext/sd card is wrong or injured.
I don’t open system settings/ storage: Unfortunaetly, setting has stopped.
I try send data with bluetools, the answer is: no sd card
The micro SD card its okay, I tested and formatting.
Maybe go return to basic rom ???

If you can, try the stock ROM. Download the PG159IMG.zip file (or whatever it is called, rename it to PG159IMG.zip on your MicroSD, and let the bootloader do it's thing).
Interesting that MikTouch failed, but looks like you are having difficulties with a few ROMs that should otherwise install and start no problem.
Another ROM to try first (if your SD slot can handle it - since that's what it sounds like) is TBalden's CM10.1. That would be the one I have had the best of luck with.
All the best
