APC8 battery life - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Good day.
I have been seeing in some post that after March (APC8) update, because of some mess in android, S7 began to use much more battery.
Did anyone compare it in real life?
Is it worth to downgrade?
If yes, what other function will be lost after the downgrade? (couldn't find any firmware version changelog)
Thank you.

hi, there is a noticable difference in battery life and SoT, I could hit around 6H SoT with my 900F (exynos) with mid/high usage running APC8, it was a very good built.
running BPJ5 atm and hitting around 3H SoT, sometimes little more or less so... yeah i guess its worth downgrading if you dont mind some minor updates and Samsung Cloud, I upgraded mine a few weeks ago, because of Samsung Cloud support and theres Android 7.0 behind corner so I would update anyway. cheers
im still wondering how could Samsung ruin the battery life so bad and not fix it for more than a half year

Im running BPJE latest update. Im on 5hr sot with 18hrs standby

Thank you for your reply.
From what i have read, it is android source code issue, not Samsung.
Maybe with 7.0 Nougat upgrade and it's enhanced Doze, could be back to the old battery life.

we will see. what is really intriguing is that some users are just fine with post-APC8 updates, like falcon here, i dont get it, really...
I have debloated my S7, no GPS, no heavy gaming.. i just dont get it..

I haven't tried BPJE yet, and I might after seeing this thread. I've tried BPJ1 and BPH6 and battery life was horrible - about 3hr SOT. Switched to APC8 and battery life doubled.
Update: I've now updated to BPJE, and the battery life is really good. Almost as good as APC8. Performance is better on BPJE so it's a good compromise between battery life and performance.

Latest Software still causing battery drain?

I have read on various forums that the latest software update has been causing problematic battery drain on the M8 and more often the Verizon version. I briefly had one about a month ago but had to return it due to some contract issues. Now I am looking to get another as I really liked it. I did however notice that the battery did drain pretty fast when I had mine. It had the latest 4.4.2 software on it. If I root it, can I install an older ROM and have the great battery life return? Are there any tips on what was causing the issue? I see AT&T actually pulled the Kitkat update due to battery issues several months ago.
Thanks for the info,
Rob
No battery drain on my device. I'm on all stock Verizon and I did a factory reset after the 4.4.4 update. Battery life is excellent and I get through a 24 hr work shift with about 20 percent battery left, about 3 hrs SOT. I'm sure you can get an older ROM version by asking in the thread of the ROM you choose if it isn't available in the OP. Many fine folks here keep old copies. Good luck buddy!

Thanks I appreciate the reply.
The oldest ROM it originally came with is 4.4.2 so I don't know how much that would help your case. Maybe the newest 4.4.4 can help if you still have problems on 4.4.2 on your new phone (if it isn't 4.4.4 already)
I've had the phone since release date and never had a battery drain issue. The battery life was great at launch and has gotten a bit better with firmware releases.
Before I had the M8 I had a Gnex. On that Gnex android 4.4.4 would cause the phone to get very warm and increased battery drain. It doesn't surprise me that it does it on the M8 as well.
I didn't see any battery drain on 4.4.2, 4.4.3, or 4.4.4.
Pfft with all the ROMs out and kernels to help who needs battery drain.
HTC One M8
After the update, my battery life dropped by an honest 50%.
I dont use my phone much and used to get 6 days on a charge, now I only get 3.
I realize that's more than most and I should not complain, but still.
I also had to reset my phone due to problems with pictures in my previously recieved texts not opening.
The reset obviously did not help my battery problem.

It's true, I'm older & only use a phone to make calls, & a few texts.
No social media stuff or anything like that, all Forum stuff is done on a tablet or computer.

Battery life is worse on Nougat

Is it just me or is battery life worse on nougat?
Did you do a factory reset after updating?
Back up your data and do it. Use the Recovery Mode (Phone off -> Hold power / Vol Up and Home Key) and wipe Cache/Factory Reset.
If possible install everything fresh and don't use backups (except for messages etc of course). Especially on an Exynos model of the S7 Nougat's battery life should roughly equal or be better than Marshmallows, Snapdragon also, but since i don`t live in the US, i can't verify, since the majority of my friends and myself use the Exynos version.
Also check your apps for wakelocks and the like. Disable/uninstall apps not needed (for example if you don`t use Samsung VR/Gear, deactivate it. It will help improving battery life).
Other than that, enjoy nougat
I did a fresh install and battery life is horrible.
I am facing this too on the exynos variant after updating to Nougat via OTA. BTW what does formatting have to do with fast discharge after update? I mean it shouldn't make any difference.
try changing mode
is it possible that you might be constantly in high performance mode?
as it increases screen resolution and backlight , might be the cause of battery drain.
I've gone up from 5 to 5.5 hours SOT on MM, to 6 to 6.5 SOT on N. Should definitely be better.
Make sure you turn off all the junk like smart stay and gesture sensor crap.
I feel nougat battery life is better either.

My battery life is a JOKE after the upgrade (via ODIN) to Nougat. I did flash HOME_CSC to keep all my data. I've disabled all the extra settings, knocked the resolution down to 1920x1080 and made sure it's on optimized performance. I've also put every non-essential app to sleep mode. I do use my phone more than average, but I haven't gotten a whole day's battery yet. It also is back to burning 5-10% overnight night on cell standby that it wasn't doing with 6.0.1!!
I love the look and feel, but this isn't worth it for me. I use TrueCaller, so I don't need the advanced call blocking. I use Nova Launcher, so there's that. I haven't found another major advantage yet to outweigh the bogus battery life.
I'm going to wipe the whole phone and restore only text messages and see how that goes this weekend. :crying:
try reseting all app permissions by going to :
settings> applications> click on the 3 dots on top right> click reset app preferences.
now restart ur fone and enjoy the awesomness of nougat !
*please not that this trick will only benefit people who are having high android os or system drain by default ( or since the install of nougat), which could be caused by nougat new permissions conflicting MM.
Battery life idle drain had increased for me in nougat. Now get 4.5 hrs earlier never got below 5hrs sot.

WOW I just can't believe how bad battery life is on Nougat. It has similar battery life with AOSP based ROMs that are early in their development. I was hoping that either the reports are not true but not only they are true but I wish I could show everybody how bad it is. I will flash Marshmallow back and stay there until this mess gets fixed. This is seriously scary, I can't believe they released the firmware at this state. Even more I hope they will eventually bother to fix it because something tells me they won't.
How bad it is for you? For me its bretty good. Today i put my phone to charge on 1% battery left. Before that i look battery usage. 49h online and 5h31min sot. I only use 4g not wifi
Sent from my SM-G930F using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I have atleast 6-8% draw per hour with it being in my pocket without any radios on or doing anything at all. This is a disaster. I flashed back MM and Ithink I'm gonna stay here. TBH I didn't like the changes in Nougat. I thought I would but I didn't. There are alot of stuff that make no sense to me but having a terrible battery life on top of that it's a deal breaker.
EDIT: Oh did I mention that this draw is with PSM on? Without it it's even worse!
Also I feel that PSM on Nougat is inferior to MM. It makes no sense.
Even worse is UPSM, the MM equivalent was better.
Ugh, I just really wanted to like Nougat but I'm so dissapointed.
Hi, I have G930T US t mobile variant of gs7, t mobile is pushing update cant turn it off. Last time when i had PG1 update battery life was awesome! at least 2 days of normal usage, after PK1 update phone was getting hot and battery became lasting for only 1 day! It is loosing power when i am not touching the phone average 5 persent in standby. So i am hoping after nougat my 2 day happiness of battery life comes back.....
Back on MM and battery life is day and night difference. It can't be on my mind. Went for jogging for a bit over an hour with music playing and it just went 1% down.
G930T. Yesterday updated to Nougat, after PK1 Nougat defenately wins in battery life. Phone is not getting hot, stable battery. After update battery was 70% so i got 23 hours of normal usage calls texting facebook + AOD with 70% battery. Perfect!
I am terribly disappointed at nougat. The battery drain at MM was 1 procent during 5 hours (!!!) with some tweaks but nougat is totaly crap.
I have 2 procent every hour with nougat at standby and after I have deleted a lot of bloat.
But I have a problem. When I go back to marshmallow by flashing via ODIN I cannot hear sound during calls. Why?
Also having battery issues since the Android OS update. My battery usage indicates 'Android System: 21%' and 'Android OS: 15%' which seems abnormally high. Have tried the 'reset app permission' solution that has been suggested and see how it goes.
This is very disappointing as I just got my S7 and had been enjoying great battery life until the Android OS update. Is there a consensus on a solution/any indication from Samsung as to a fix?
Thanks.
If you have battery issues try to disable Chrome and use the Samsung browser or Opera Mini or pretty much any other browser. Chrome is a battery waster of gargantuan proportions under Nougat for me. Only using another browser wasn't enough for me, I had to disable it in the settings.
Thanks. Actually Chrome hasn't been giving me problems. It seems that the 'reset app permissions' trick worked (OS and System items in battery usage window are back down to 2-4% which is as it was).
Thanks for help.

Battery Life Improvement

Anyone noticed a slight improvement in the battery life of their V-10 after the stock Nougat update?
Yes but not a whole lot of improvement I still run out of battery near half my day. I need a 6,000 mAh battery
I've noticed a difference. Usually within an 8hr shift my phone would normally be between 20-30% but last night I still had 70% after the usual 8hrs.. I think it's a big improvement for my phone and battery.

Are you using the stock, unrooted ROM?
I am using stock rom but the screen uses about 60-80% of battery life I am a very heavy user watching YouTube for hours and gaming so to be expected of any phone batteries life
---------- Post added at 07:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:01 PM ----------
I have not tried any other batteries other than the stock ones I use a otter box case so. Most none oem batteries won't fit
Yep gaming and high screen usage will definitely kill the OEM V10 battery....
So I'm on the update I have ran it oem stock, rooted with magisk, and with root and test build of xposed, oem stock has a nice battery improvement, but with root/magisk moduals, and xposed I think MM 6.0 Had better battery life. I think this will change after the official release of Xposed for N 7.0

I never rooted my V10, is the battery life on those ROMS you mentioned better than the stock ROM?
I've noticed great improvement since I have the perfect environment for Nougat's doze. Flat on a surface, screen off for a period of time. I went from 5-15 end of day to 70ish. Those who have the phone in their pocket, or are more active may want to pair with greenify's option to make doze more aggressive to see better battery life.
Root has a small drain but, N 7.0 is awesome and even with magisk root installed its better than stock MM 6.0. If you ever went to using xposed then MM 6.0 with Xposed still wins in terms of running a modified system. MM only wins because its able to run a official build of xposed... I can't tell someone to get root If they don't know it well, but the new N 7.0 is a good update that adds batterylife
I've rooted several phones and tablets in the past, I haven't bothered to root my V10, been happy using the stock ROM

By rooting your phone, you get the ability to change stuff deeper into the phones software, which means that you can install apps that will do the trick for you. Some of them require Root access and some require even deeper changes to your device software by using xposed framework. By using such software you can stretch your battery life by too much. I remember i managed to get my One Plus One to drain just 0.3% (thats 13 days battery life without using the screen ofc) per hour, but it cost me some slow sync of apps like gmail, facebook, messenger, whats up etc. Thats because i forced these apps to check for updates once every 5-6 hours or so. So you don't have to use a custom ROM in order to get root or xposed framework.
So I use my phone like all day screen on time is like 9h.... I'm running the 10000mah huge battery that has the large. .7inch thick case it's on amazon. But any way my system hasn't been great on battery life since I use tones of apps and mods ect ect.... I am only posting this to say a few things. I don't like the unofficial xposed framework all that much on N 7.0 I love the update though my battery life is unstable at best. If you are going full out mod crazy like I am use battery saver ware it turns on immediately and run it all day. Some days I go all-day at work and still have 70% battery left by 6pm other days I run it down to 50% by 6pm... Without battery saver on though it's not good battery life. Right now I'm on Nougat with magisk 13.3 viper audio xposed v24 and tones of mods... With all the add-on stuff I am thinking something is using very low optimization.... MM was a little more stable and predictable if you are happy with stock roms then the nougat update plus running battery saver on full time should give really good results
Battery life
Yes man, in short the battery life of this device is completely, as you mentioned, "unstable".

Abysmal battery life.

I have run out of ideas. I have uninstalled apps, repaired the OS, done everything I can think of. The battery life of this phone is the worst I have ever experienced in a phone. I can barely get a day out of this phone (2hrs 30 SOT). I'm at my wit's end. Is it just my device or do others experience this. And does anyone have any idea what I can do?
Unfortunately Sony doesn't pack much into their batteries and software does take a toll. I had a Huawei P9 and P10 Plus and I would get a solid day of heavy use, with my XZ I can't make it to early evening with comparable usage. I prefer Sony handsets to all others, but I have to agree with you in that battery life is crap.

Yeah, but it wasn't always like this. I used the Z2 and it had great battery life and I also used a Z3 dual and it's battery life was even better. Compared to those 2, the XZ's battery life is shockingly bad. I used to get 6-7 hrs SOT on my Z3, 2 hrs is a struggle on this phone.

Make sure you do a factory reset after the update.
You will thank me for it later.
Also if you want to seriously see major peeofmance and battery improvement, you need to root and installtlal duality dra4.
People are achieving 5-10hour sot with 24-48hours usage.
The experience in this rom is night and day compared to stock.
Stock ROM is complete turd.
I'm giving you this information from my first hand experience. You need this rom, else you will continue to be disappointed I know this.
Why do I know, well I've been with Sony for 5years and haven't rooted for the passed 2 years until now. It's a must to root this phone else it's merely mediocre.
However the choice is yours

+1 ...man this is all thru... i have same xperience with Sony devices...i had xperia z,z2,z5 and now xz and since z5 everything is going down...less battery life...same speakers since z2...very bad loudspeaker its so low that even a low budget phone beats it.. also OVERHEATING badlly...but the design of the phone is way better then any competition atleast for me...and also xz is very durbale phone it fellt 5 times already on concrete also 2 times fell directly on the screen and nothing is broken yet...screen has only 2 little scratches and of course all corners are beaten up a little bit hehehe over all very durable trust me...this new plastic that they use is so good...and at the end i really must say that rootin is a must for this phone cuz since i got it i had constant problems with stock rom, specialy with ram usage it gave me lags all the time but now i use custom rom and xz is flying like it should.

Install wakelock detector or betterbatterystats and check what's draining your battery. This phone should easily achieve 1 day battery life. I'm getting 3,5-4 of Ingress (AR game that uses GPS+Mobile Data+screen on - so it's hard to drain more)m and about 5sot with normal use

Highly disappointed with battery and heating

So 2 weeks with the phone. I absolutely love it, except for this huge problem. Is this normal??:
- It gets very overheated quickly, specially with camera or videocalls.
- Battery life is the worst one I have ever experienced. It will go from 100% to 15% in around 8h with 2,5h SOT. It's insane. Exact same setup with pixel 2 XL, lasts double
Do you think might be a damaged device? I tried ofc clean flash. Both Android 9 and 10 beta. Same issue...
Thank you
I've been having pretty bad battery life myself. Average of 3 to 3.5hrs SoT. Usually need a pick up charge during the day before bed.
Really annoyed cuz I love this phone. I've been trying out OnePlus 7 Pro and S10+. Don't like Samsung, used to love them, but I just hate that UI and their apps they push on you. OnePlus is amazing in terms of everything but the camera, and that is a big thing for me. OnePlus 7 Pro has been really great in performance, battery, everything, but the camera which is pretty mediocre.
I'm returning my OP7 Pro and going back to my Pixel 3. While I love the speed and smoothness of the 7 Pro, the camera is really bad. Too bad to compromise. Returning it and going back to my pixel 3 which also suffers crappy battery, but the camera is still the best
Yeah the battery life is mediocre, you would think they would have added some kernel profiling for such. Pubg eats battery when I play it and it gets so hot it's rather concerning. But on the plus side, it makes my wife put her phone down when she's riding on empty.
I might not be a power user but I get solid 5h SOT with DP3. Sometimes I can reach 6h SOT.
Standy by is around 14-16h, so it last a day.
As I am using DP3, I dont have any custom kernel not even root.
Signal at home sucks, I use wifi. But leaving home gives me the same result. If I stay in a place with good signal I can get even more.
Exactly the same issues I'm having. Overheating might usage and battery drain is horrendous.
Used the s10e with the same issues unfortunately. So went back to the pixel 3 knowing these compromises.
I think you may have a wakelock issue or a bad battery. I am running q beta 3 and still am at ~50 % after 11 hours

Do you think the pixel 3 is a good value phone today ?
I can have pixel 3 black in 128go for 400 € so I'm hesitating .....
Did the lasts updates improved battery life ?
Or it is more efficient to change the kernel to improve battery life ?
Thanks for your advices ?
Well after some days I have to say battery improved. It's not dramatic now but still being very weak. I changed location so maybe it's related to signal
For me now the dramatic point is the heating. There must be a bug or something, when you use front camera. It gets extremely hot. Videocalls are totally awful then

I think the phone is great in all other aspects. I am currently on Android Q beta 3 and the issues are the same from the time of purchase last October.
Regarding using custom kernels, I'm not into unlocking my phones and rooting nowadays so can't help you in that.
However if you are not into heavy gaming or editing, I've heard the 3a lineup performs better in regards to battery life. Might want to check them out before you decide.
I've been with beta for a while. Battery sucks but no overheating. This is the same with the official pie firmware.
I just got used to this and to be honest this happens with previous pixels.
It's an Android feature ?
I'm loving the size, camera and future navigation gesture.
