I tried reading the NFC chip on my US passport card, but the phone doesn't pick anything up. I've tried two different apps from the Play store and I turned NFC on in the settings, but it doesn't do anything. Has anybody got it working? Have any tips?
Thanks!
Billy
I tried Android beam by touch my One X with my GS2 and both reacted with vibration and sound. So, yes, NFC works.

I'm assuming NFC based data communication isn't universal. That'd be pretty messed up if someone could walk around with a phone and run into people in a heavy tourist area and have access to their personal information.
Android Beam has to be enabled to both devices (or the equivalent on whichever other device) in order to pass information back an forth. I've tested it with MiFARE 1k tags and the HOX works just fine.
There's a cool app that can read standard & non-standard NFC tags like the ones in credit cards and ones that stores use for loss prevention. It's called NFC ReTag on the Market (errr.. Play Store..w/e).
Others like NFC Reader/Writer by NXP are designed to work only with NFC tags that are NFC Forum compliant or of certain/most MiFARE types.
What's the range on the reader? I thought I read 10cm (4 inches) somewhere? I wonder if it'd be possible to get a wrist band with an nfc chip in it that would unlock the phone when you're holding it in your hand, but then require a pass-code if the wrist band isn't present. Could be a silicon band like people get for the various causes they support, or even integrated into a watch band (for the few people who still wear those!)
Another possibility would be a ring, that would definitely be in range of the reader I'd imagine), though I'm not big on rings myself...
I can definitely put my credit card up against it and it'll read it. It took a few seconds though.

Well, the range isn't that good, but, uh... yeah! It can happen! http://youtu.be/vmajlKJlT3U
I should have clarified that I wasn't trying to communicate between two phones. I want to see what info my cards are emitting!
Thanks,
Billy

The middle of the back seems to be fine.
I use it with nfc task launcher, use a switch in there to turn stuff on when I get home and off when I go out, very useful

Never tested NFC with an US passport ... but I think someone mentioned that the passport musst be open ... due to some shielding metal foil within the cover ...

I tried NFC Task Launcher and it's definitely a nice app, but with the switches you have to tap the tag twice. And the tags can only be read when the phone is unlocked. Hoping a chef can fix this in a custom rom.

Yeah, good point. I don't have my sleeve anymore though. I've tried a half dozen apps with no luck. I'm beginning to think my NFC module is broken though. I even tried the wife's passport. Any advice?

Well, I got a glimmer of hope. I was able to read a tag in my library book. That's the only thing it's read so far, but I don't think my credit cards have chips afterall. Not sure what the problem is with the passport though =\

To use Android Beam, you have to have the app open from which you wish to share information. Bring the phones together and tap the screen. There's no way you could ninja someone's data without them knowing, as they have to push it to you, rather than you pulling it from them.
EDIT: Oh, and yes NFC works fine for me, at least to push contacts via AndroidBeam.
I have Schwab and used to deposit checks with their mobile app on my GNex just fine. Just tried my first one with the N5 and couldn't get it to work no matter how I changed the lighting. This is what makes Android awful sometimes - these random incompatibilities that just shouldn't exist. Does anyone else here use Schwab or any other mobile check deposit and have it working with their N5?
Nope

Underpowered battery for a 5inch 1080p screen that is non-removable. Weak generic antenna that drops signal. Worst speaker of any device on the market. Weak vibration motor. Power button rattles. Cheap plastic build

I don't use Schwab, but TD Bank's app has worked fine for me since day one with my N5.
Works fine for me with USAA. For max speed I use a dark surface to place the check on. I once had a focus bug where it couldn't focus but a reboot fixed it.
No problems with my bank. The N5 camera in more then sufficient for the task.
My banks app crashes after upload, but will still mobile deposit my check.

I've deposited 3 checks with Schwab app since I got my Nexus 5 (few days after launch) and never had an issue.
I use Webster bank app and mobile check deposit worked for me
I use Simple Bank mobile deposit with no problems. I have had issues before, but not on the Nexus 5, and it had nothing to do with the phone or Android. It was a personal check and the persons signature had pen strokes in the routing number.
Also, these incompatibilities are not Androids fault. They are the app developers not updating the app to work with the latest version. I will never understand why people blame Android when this happens, but when an app is not compatible with iOS 7, it's the devs fault and not Apple's.

I completely agree it is the dev's fault and not Android's as a platform, I just mean this sort of thing happens on Android a lot more because so many devs are negligent and don't properly test and weed out all the issues.
Anyway, thanks for all the responses and I'm glad to hear Schwab mobile deposit works fine on the N5. When I'm back home I'll try a reboot and see if that helps.

I had this problem with nfc and wireless charging, turned out the back panel just wasn't set properly. I believe there are antennas that need to contact components on the motherboard. Try pushing a little harder all over the back until you hear it snap.

ARENT YOU THE GUY FROM GBATEMP?! Try properly snapping on the back cover. There are various antennas and perhaps they weren't properly lined up. Don't really think removing a back cover will cause this, my 2 cents is that it just isn't properly snap shut.
EDIT: pretty sure you are. You owned an Xperia Play and we discussed it in a GBATemp thread before saying that android 4.1 was rolling out to Nexus devices. We also met in the Gin2JB thread.

Yeah that's what I had happen. Figure it was the antenna coming lose inside or something.
I chatted with Samsung support. Poured a cup of tea into my mac keyboard so I can't post the chat transcript. I'll try to post the magic sauce that got it working from my note 5.
Go to settings - applications - application manager- all applications - bluetooth. Tap clear data. Reboot your phone. See if Bluetooth is working better.
Mine is awesome. At school I was on my beats solo 2, I went all the way to the bathroom before they started fading, pretty much at least 3 classrooms between, a corner, then the bathroom, not too mention WALLS. I don't even get any service anywhere on campus

My range went bad again in a day or two. Returned my Note 5 to Samsung and they replaced the main board. It works great now!
I realized if connected to my car Bluetooth, talking and tethering at the same time messed up my last note 5. Tried everything to extend the range once broke and couldn't. I had to replace the phone. So now I do not do both at the same time while in the car. Just my two cents.

Same problem here. Bluetooth is so crummy that it will disconnect from my pebble steel just from being in my pocket. Replacement note 5 is out for delivery now. Hopefully the new phone works correctly.

Talked to T-Mobile on Xmas and the problem is Samsung released an update that broke the range on your bluetooth. T-Mobile doesn't know when Samsung will release a patch to fix this. People that received replacements probably got a phone with the old update. I thought it was my bluetooth set so i ordered another one and same problem. I might have to Odin to a previous stock build.

TMO confirmed that an update is restricting the Bluetooth range? Interesting... I've just dealt with it pretty much since I got the device back in August as it's been tremendously frustrating that even as close as 1m I have connectivity issues...
Anyone elses wireless keep dropping as soon as you try to connect to something? I've factory reset 3 times now to try and see if it fixes it -no go. As soon as I try and download/run a speed test it disconnects.
g3/g4/note 5/ipad all connect fine with no issue, as well as 4 chromecasts.
On the other note, Android Pay launched and let me add cards to it.
I got no issues with connecting to wireless other then it disconnects sometime when phone is asleep.
How did you get android pay to work ? It launches for me but it doesn't let me add any cards.

Indeed, connectivity cycles when you are on the initial setup program as well, bluetooth, nfc and wireless both go in and out (icons for bluetooth and nfc go on and off, wireless drops completely). Quite annoying. Already got a return going with Amazon, sucks since I just got it this morning.

Yeap, it was sent back on Tuesday. I just ordered a grey one as they came in stock on Amazon, hoping to get it Monday. I honestly likes what I saw with the phone, I havent been happy with any phones this year so far. Had a s6, g4, note 5, flex 2, mulitple nexus 6's (all with screen issues or backplate issues), iphone 6 etc. Hopefully this is the one, that helio x10 was pretty damn quick in it.
Hope that grey one arrives soon! People have been waiting for them. I really like this phone and am doing well with it after frustrations with dual SIM slots on the Zenfone 2 that involved getting a refurbished exchange unit sent to me, turned out all to be the 2G slot being the issue so it was returned. weeks of frustrations! So here's to good fortune!
