Factory Data Reset with TWRP and System Mods - Moto G 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a rooted XT1550 model with 6.0.1 and TWRP installed and some modifications to the system(converted a few apps to system). I want to know if it is possible to factory reset it. Also will the phone being rooted cause any issues with the reset? Please help!
Thank You!

A factory reset in TWRP will wipe data (including internal storage) and caches, but not external storage. Any changes to system or boot (meaning root) will remain, but it best to do an advanced wipe and select the partitions you wish to clear (often user data and caches is sufficient). When in doubt, backup first to the SD card!
What are you trying to fix or accomplish?

Thank you for replying! I'm trying to reset because there is a lot of space being taken by the data partition even though there isn't data of that size. So, I want to wipe data and start again.

Well now you know for yourself eh!
In recovery it won't delete it. If you do a true factory reset from within the os though it will definitely do it. Happened to me already.
Recovery just formats the data and system partitions.
Do you have to wipe the sd card on the Nexus S when redoing ROM's ?? the ics ROMs I downloaded installed correctly but on reboot will just sit on google screen. So could this be because the "SD card" needs to be reformatted?? or did i not wipe everything??
Thanks!!

Thanks. I hope this works. I just returned my phone to stock 2.3.7, but my sd card went untouched. Too much garbage from before, so I wanted to clean that out and start new (before I go flashing a rom or anything else). I already saved what I wanted to my pc.
** Took a few minutes, but worked great. ALL clean **
Thanks again.
(this was like cashing out my 401k.. everyone advises against it, but no one says how it's done )
Like a few others said, if you go into recovery mode and wipe it you're good to go. All of your music, backups (from Astro), and whatever else will still be there . I accidentally forgot to backup while flashing a ROM once so I was panicking then I found all of my files still there. You cannot imagine the joy I had, nor my facial expression XD

[Q] Factory reset on root with roms

Hey everyone, reset question for you. If i do a factory reset on a rooted/unlocked GS3 with the stock rom, will i 1: be able to keep root, and 2: will the rom backups on clockworkmod still be there?
thank you for any help!
Using CWM Recovery, 1 Yes. A factory reset only deletes data and cache files. Data being your apps and settings. 2) Yes, CWM doesn't automatically format either SDCard.
To answer again in different terms, CWM Recovery factory reset only wipes /sdcard/data and /sdcard/cache. Backups are in /sdcard/clockworkmod and root is a modification in a different directory.(I dunno the name offhand)
Perfect! Thank you so much, this makes a lot of sense. Thanks for including that link as well.

What to wipe when flashing custom rom?

Hello all. I know this is a noob question and Im sorry, but I need to ask.
When Im flashing a custom rom (going to try EOS again) what exactly do I need to wipe?
Im using TWRP. I know that I need to wipe the Cache, Dalvik Cache and system. Do I also choose the Factory Reset option? How about Internal Storage? Then there is the Format Data option. Which of these should I do?

If you do a factory reset, you don't have to worry about wiping anything else.
As for what to wipe for installing a custom ROM, it depends. EOS recommends a factory reset when you are flashing their ROMs going from any other type of ROM, including stock. If your on ICS, to jellybean, factory reset. 4.1 to 4.2, factory reset. One nightly to the newer one, you don't have too.
Internal storage is not something you want to wipe... that is any pictures, files, music etc. etc. that you have on the tablet, it will be the same as when you unlock the bootloader, you lose EVERYTHING!! Factory reset, you won't lose anything that isn't on the system partition.
Make sure you are on the latest version of the recommended recoveries
Perfect. The information you gave is exactly what I needed. Thanks Draxin.

[Q] Will a phone Reset make me lose Root?

I'm having an issue with an app and I've tried everything I can think of to troubleshoot it, Uninstall/re-install. Turn phone off/on, restart phone.
I was thinking of trying a reset on my phone, but it's currently rooted/unlocked.
Will doing the reset under settings give me any issues?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you
If you have a custom recovery installed like twrp or cwm you can do a full wipe from there and it will essentially do the same thing.

No it wont.
I also have the same question. Did you do the reset? Lose root? What happened?

Yes it will. And if you think it won't a little more elaborate post would be helpful...... ?????
I would not do a factory restore from Settings with a custom recovery installed. I have never tried this on the M8 but on the Transformer tablets that can get you into a nasty "forced reboot to recovery" loop.
If it's an app causing the problem, just do a Factory Wipe in recovery. In TWRP the Factory Wipe will wipe all your apps and their data (not your personal files in data/media though) and also cache and dalvik. Not sure how CWM handles that option....
Read the recovery log while it's running or save the log from the Advanced option and check afterwards which partitions the recovery wiped.
For good measure re-flash the rom and you should be good to go.

Internal Storage Wiped

Hi everyone,
today, I wanted to flash a new ROM. I've wiped the internal storage. Was this wrong?
How did you wipe the partition? TWRP?
If so, it should be akin to a factory reset. User data and apps will be gone but system should be OK.

Internal Storage in TWRP refers to the part of /data that is used specifically for "common storage" by all apps - such as media, downloads, etc.
If you want to perform a clean flash, wipe /data. This is the same as a factory reset, and if you're flashing a different ROM than what you had before, you should absolutely do this.
Thanks for the clarification. That makes sense. I must've confused Internal Storage wipe with something else.
