I have been trying to find a recovery for my phone that would allow me to to do nandroid backups without success.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

Hope for DirtyCow-based selinux hack for V20...
Hopefully I won't get slaughtered here, I'm used to using TWRP or CWM is it possible to make a backup using Flashfire? lets see the phone bricks since you won't be able to boot into recovery how can you restore from backup ( assuming your'e able to make one via Flashfire?

You do a backup with Flashfire.
If you "brick" then just boot up in Download mode, flash the appropriate firmware, let it boot, go back to download mode, flash the engineering kernel again, re-root, re-install Flashfire then restore your backup. Pretty easy. Not as simple as having a recovery though. It's just pretty time consuming but I've done it dozens of times.

Thanks for the reply, but bear with me a bit I'm a bit confused coming from only using TWRP. I have flash fire installed lets say I do the backup and I'm bricked for whatever reason the phone does not boot up properly the next step would be to get in download mode flash the firmware via Odin I assume? * I don't really understand the flash the engineering Kernel part here what does that actually entail? omitting that step lets say I do boot up normally. At this stage I'm pretty much stock and would root again download flash fire and somehow my backup would be preserved there and can just flash that back up?

lol you're right. Have you had any issues with apps crashing? my Facebook app keeps on crashing I clear data and even disable using Ti and reinstall a different apk works for a bit sometimes hours and then crashes again

That site is full of crap articles they steal from elsewhere and change a few lines of the articles. Take a lot of what they claim with a grain of salt.
The article you listed is meant for the Chinese 930 and 935, attempting it on an American 930/935 will result in a soft brick and loss of data.
I am on mobile, or I would link the original post from here on XDA stupdroid stole, stating clearly you cannot load it onto an American phone.

I have a Galaxy Tab 2 VZW and was trying to install the ClearRom, but I guess I forgot to unlock bootloader, so now everytime I turn the tab on I get message statitng " System Software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone."
I have a backup from before I tried installing the ROM but don't know what to do with it
Any help will be appreciated

HOw did you make the backup? CWM? If so, then install CMW recovery and do a restore.

I tried getting into recovery mode, but I get the following screen everytime, I think I need the Stock Firmware to flash with ODIN but I don't know where to find it.

Always, ALWAYS, follow directions exactly how they're laid out.
What you need to do is download the aboot.img to your sd card. Reboot into recovery, ADB Shell into your device (you may need linux for this part as Windows doesn't recognize the device in recovery mode). Once you ADB into recovery, make sure you are root (noted by # instead of $).
Then:
dd if=/sdcard/aboot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5
reboot download
This should unlock you bootloader so you can get by verizons pesky warning.
We can't see the picture you tried attaching.

I cannot get to recovery mode, only download mode, also ClearRom did not specify that the bootloader, that is why I did not even bother

You'll more than likely have to send it back. There has been no official release of stock firmware, unfortunately (none that I have found at least). In the root thread there are steps 1 - 3 for a reason. 1 - Root, 2 - Unlock and Recovery, 3 - Custom ROM. Always follow directions.

Maybe try a stock 3100 rom? If the hardware is the same should work, just need to set APN etc.Then reroot, install recovery, install cuztom rom.

Actually, according to here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1885558 you just need download mode to install the stock image and then follow the rest of the steps.

DO NOT INSTALL A P3100 ROM. It's not the same hardware (not really even close), so that would only make it worse.

imnuts is correct. These devices are extremely different and really does need it's own subforum so people don't keep getting confused. The i705 is closest to the i535 (s3), nearly identical actually.

It still wouldn't work. boot, recovery, and system for the s3 are designed for the s3. The hardware is the same, but the software has it's differences. What differences, though, is beyond me.
I have the same issue, this is the first time I've ever "Bricked" a device. Thought I followed the instructions correctly, I can successfully flash recovery.tar.md5 on Mr.Hydes thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1885558 but when it goes to reboot it gives me the Yellow ExclaTriangle "System software not authorized by Verizion , yadi, yadi ya da".
I can get into Download mode but NO RECOVERY, Tried flashing (With ODIN) CWM 6.0.1.9 located here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2044630 but ERROR with NAND WRITE FAIL.
Does anyone have a PIT file? I want give Heimdall a stab at it before I go throw it through Verizon's front window. Appreciate any help, like I said I understand the importance of following Instructions, I've done plenty of Android devices before including The Original GTab7, I dont mind cracking it open either, I've already had it apart to disconnect the battery but that did no help either, BTW it's really easy to open up.

I couldn't boot into Recovery to Flash, I'm Trying to flash now using Odin but get "Secure Check Fail". Any Ideas?
The bootloader needs to be flashed before the recovery using the dd command. Its listed first under step 2, before the recovery.

Yeah that's where I'm confused, I've had it rooted and unlocked since November following your original Development, I was on G3 not J1. Followed the Instructions and then crap.
Unlocked since Nov and it just now crapped? That doesn't make any sense.. When you boot into download mode right now, what orientation is the screen? Portrait or landscape? Landscape would mean a correctly flashed aboot.img (boot loader)

I followed this thread of yours in the beginning of NOV. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1942674 I was rooted and unsecured bootloader, had CWM and SuperUser, but there weren't any ROMS out yet. Everything was fine until I went to install CleanRom the other day.

I haven't tried this, but you should be able to do a systemless install of TWRP, root the phone, then re-install the stock recovery.

I tried this. I reinstalled stock recovery (found in a UPDATE.APP file). But now, my device fails to do OTAs.
Does it notify you they're available, but fail to install? Or is it not seeing any updates?
I haven't been able to do much experimentation because there's not TWRP backup for my L04 yet, and I don't want to leave myself in a bad state without a restore option. I'm probably going to hold off on any updates (I'm on b140 now) until I have a fully working TWRP.
I had a notification and, when it did reboot, it failed. Now, it doesn't see any update. I am on b101.
Finally, I downloaded frd-L09c432b120 from here.

Rebooted my phone (no wipe done) and got a notification for an update.
The update succeeded (I'm now on B120).
But now, bootloader is locked again. So, it will wipe my phone when I will root it (locking bootloader first). So, I'm really looking for a solution to get OTAs on a rooted phone. Even if I will have to root it again, but without loosing lock on bootloader.
Isn't it possible to disable the device encryption so that you can avoid having to wipe it every time?

I suggest to not do any OTA's. For all we know, an OTA can make it harder to root.
The thing might not work with a new official release is the recovery. And looking to other devices that has not been the case.
Just don´t encrypt the phone as it makes much harder to update. Also might mess up the timed on/off function.
Rooting without TWRP must be really hard.

It messes up the phone pretty bad and makes it a headache to get OTA in the future.

Well root itself will cripple OTA updates. Using Kingroot is really not recommended due to compatibility issues. So SuperSU is the best choice.

I should have highlighted HEADACHE in the above post. With SuperSU or magisk, it's super easy to enable/get OTA again but not the same with KingRoot.
And the bootloader unlocked by KingRoot has to be unlocked again, using official method, to be able to flash desired images for a complete unroot.

Yes! I rooted it with Kingroot and tried to flash a custom recovery through Flashify. The recovery partition got corrupted and I can't flash anything to it anymore.

TL-DR; I rooted my phone, and want to update with minimal loss of data.
Sorry for this newbie question but I really couldn't figure out everything and wanted to confirm before proceeding.
I have MHA-L29C185B138 and rooted step-by-step via the instructions on this link:

I want to update. What should I do? I isntalled Firmware Finder and downloaded MHA-L29C185B172 FULLOTA-MF. (downloaded all 3 files)
I couldn't find a complete tutorial for rooted roms. Read different and partial recommendations on different threads. Somewhere I read that I need to restore my boot and recovery partition before update. I backed my boot partition as it was a step in rooting guide but I didn't back up my recovery partition.
So could you please point me a beginner friendly guide that explains step by step updating rooted mate 9?

Updating and keeping root is basically not possible, as far as I know.
Regardless of installation method, your phone will be re-locked and wiped when new firmware is installed on a rooted phone.
Same question from me as well. I rooted using the method in the link and I wanted to update to C185B172. No idea what's the safe proof way. As this is my daily driver and only phone I can't risk messing with it.

Whenever you update you have to start all over again with the same process you originally rooted with. Like @duraaraa said your bootloader gets locked back down and your recovery gets flashed to stock. So you have to unlock bootloader, then install TWRP, format your data so that you're unencrypted and flash the public then HW data files for the specific firmware you updated to. Basically follow the steps in the root method you initially used. This has to be done everytime

Yes sir. But remember if you're rooted with TWRP you will have to flash stock recovery first before you can even think about updating or taking an OTA otherwise it will fail.

I downloaded the full package from firmware finder and extracted everything with 7zip, I found 2 different recovery files with same file size but different content in it.
recovery_a.img and recovery2_a.img
Which one should I use ?

Sorry about that, you want to use the RECOVERY.img not recovery2. You fastboot that img and you will have stick recovery, and it will place it in the correct spot so need to worry about where you would need to flash it to. Hope that helps

And I can't use Odin because it's a ZIP file, not MD5, .TAR, SMD. etc. What else can I do? I've only ever managed to root my phone once and that was using CF AUTO Root which can be flashed by Odin.

Please tell us the specific phone model and rom. Magisk need to be flashed (installed) using a custom recovery e.g. TWRP. TWRP can be flashed using Odin even if the device isn't actually rooted.

My phone model is Samsung S5 Neo and I'm running 5.1 custom ROM. So, what you're saying is, I can flash TWRP using Odin and that will become my default recovery when I press home, volume up and the power button?

I managed to find a file with the file type .MD5 and used Odin, plugged my phone in and downloaded with no problem.

That must be a modified stock rom. TWRP will allow you to install any kind of rom without any restrictions.

Sweet! Thanks for the insight. This is what happens when you're a total noob. I find all this rooting and custom ROM larky confusing. I always stumble into issues along the way. So, install TWRP on my laptop and that will have the correct file type to be flashed by Odin, and then use TWRP to flash Magisk.. anything else or will I have any other problems? Don't want to clumsily stumble into a landmine.

What the exact phone model? SM-xxxx
You can download TWRP as .tar.md5 and flash it using Odin.

That's fine as I don't have Xposed or Root access at the moment. My phone model is SM-G903F.

just a hint: there is already an official Marshmallow 6.0.1 release for you device and you probably should look out a newer rom.

Why would you suggest that? In case I reach a point where apps are no longer compatible with my outdated software? Thanks, I might do that. I have stuck with 5.1 simply because I'm preferring it and also Marshmallow have made it harder to bypass security and root the device. I'm thinking it might not be safe now that I know this is a modded ROM, so I should probably look for an official one.
Can I make a Nandroid backup with TWRP? That sounds like it could be useful for any hiccups.

Nandroid Backup and many other features are provided by TWRP

Marshmallow is already fully supported and you will be able to get full control to anything you like. Usually you can trust roms you get at the XDA forum as its a pretty active community and harmfull users would be banned real quickly. The only point is that modded stock rom or custom roms like LineageOS and derivates may not be stable and cause functionality issues.
So I've used this forum to find TWRP for my device https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...official-experimental-twrp-galaxy-s5-t3293379, I'm not sure how to 'Run flash-recovery.sh' because, as I mentioned, it won't let me flash from my SD card.. Any help would be appreciated!
UPDATE: Managed to get TWRP as my custom recovery. Thanks so much for your help! I genuinely had no idea you could flash TWRP onto your phone! I was using the app which is hopeless. Most forums I've found say 'boot in recovery' which is quite unclear if you're not familiar with that..
Can I flash Nougat update onto my S5 Neo? It's originally not supported, that's the only reason I'm asking..
Can I still root with Magisk on that operating system as well and restore from Nandroid backup?

The security patch included is (most likely) the July one, since Samsung also just released a new software update to international models which includes the July security patch and Verizon has been updating the "Galaxy S" series phones with the July update over the past few weeks.

Updato is one way; this shows the list for the Verizon S5 with the most recent at the top; they haven't gotten the new update up yet though.
I think that another way would be for someone to dig through the update.zip file which would be on the phone of someone who got the OTA update downloaded but had not yet installed it yet.
To confirm, the only thing that's different between the dev-friendly version (when it comes out) and the stock is the missing aboot? Thanks again.

Is this flashable with Odin only or possibly need to already be on a specific kernal? I have tried on two S5900V's through TWRP and both result in a failure message. Both are on jkruse de-bloated MM rom at the moment.

Since no one wanted to chime in and help me out in my post, you need to unzip the file and load the md5 into Odin's AP slot and flash it. Then let the phone do its thing and flash the latest TWRP with odin after. Then go back into TWRP and flash supersu to gain root again. Trying to flash right within TWRP is not an option, not sure why its not explained.

I dirty flashed two S5's last night with Odin, no factory reset and both phones kept their bootloaders un touched since unlocked. :good:
stuck on Verizon boot screen
After the update via OTA, my aunt's phone has been stuck on Verizon boot screen. Tried booting into safe mode, with same result. Any ideas on how not to lose all her data? Thanks!

Did you loose root?
I dirty flashed and lost root, was unable to get it back.
Reloaded TWRP via Odin and then flashed SuperSU, nothing. Wiped and restore backup all good. ..

I always flash super su and whatever else I need in recovery after I've flashed the rom so I cant give you a definitive answer. Both phones did upgrade without data loss and now advanced calling/wifi calling actually work now which is why I flashed in the first place.

Is this working? Ive tried everything and i have the Toshiba chip. Emmc 11. It soft bricks if i try to downgraded to stock builds.

The new file seemed to unlock boot loader. Couldnt get odin to flash twrp......

If you flash the dev boot loader friendly version it wont screw with your bootloader whatsoever. Before you restart go back in TWRP and flash supersu to get root again. Saying it "unlocked boot loader" may cause confusion to people because it does not, you need to manually go from locked to DEV status via a few of the methods posted in here.

Ive not had twrp or root on this device but it went from saying vzw official binary to samsung original. Will i be able to root as long as twrp flashes?
