Sprint Note 5 without Hotspot option - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note5

I recently purchased a Note 5 from Sprint on eBay. The phone was taken directly to the carrier I now have and I did not get the chance to check it before it was taken to Cleartalk. I got the phone yesterday and the phone was working perfectly as well as the 4G but when I decided to turn on the Hotspot there was no option for Hotspot!!! Also, I realized that the phone didn't have any applications from Sprint that Sprint phones have and that you cannot uninstall. I took it back to my carrier and they said that they cannot remove the hotspot option, that the phone doesn't have that option. So they pretty much turned me down... I also tried downloading apps that would allow me to share my internet like hotspot and there was an error. I ended up resetting the phone and now I don't have Internet which that will be fixed Monday when I take it back to cleartalk, but any idea why my phone is sprint but doesn't have any sprint features??
TYIA

I have the same problem but because I cracked my phone they won't exchange it

I wonder if the phone was rooted and the previous owner deleted a lot of the Sprint apps and such. You might be able to run through the steps of rerooting the phone and install a stock rom that would have all of the necessary apps.

OR use ODIN to flash the latest sprint stock firmware. http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/106117/N920PVPU2BPH9_N920PSPT2BPH9_SPR/
edit: this download is probably quicker. PH9 is the latest. https://www.mediafire.com/folder/byye3kocz6nn4/Stock Roms Note 5

just download FoxFi app and key from blackmart alpha...works the same.

I've been searching the net like crazy to try and fix this issue, I tried a bunch of apps and also tweaks within db files etc, the only thing that worked for me was to run Easy Tether Pro and plug it into my PC with a usb cable. Doesn't exactly fix it for every situation but it got me running again. One page I found suggested that it was an activation issue that causes the hotspot option to disappear. The guy that worked this out had his phone reactivated with the carrier and it started working again. I think I probably have the same phone as the OP, it's unlocked but because it was originally activated with Sprint it isn't a fully functioning phone. I'm also having a couple of other issues that I'll reserve for a separate post.

What are u trying to get tethering w/o your cable. If you have Sprint it's apn is greyed out. Use sql editor and edit the apn. Then ur good to go - edit telephony.db, i believe.
If it doesn't work PM, I will shoot you my number.

Nah tried that. It's not related to the APN, it's related to the hotspot and tethering function being missing altogether from the phone. Any tweaking in the telephony.db file has no effect for me.
Anyway I bit the bullet and am returning the phone for a refund. Just can't be bothered wasting any more time on it.

If you don't mind, what is the issue. I assumed that you wanted some kind of tethering. You were saying about using the cable to tether.

Exactly the same issue as the OP. The option for Hotspot is missing from the "connections" section in settings. It's possible to get to it, some 3rd party apps need it switched on and will take me to the "hotspot and tethering" window to switch it on, but it's greyed out and has no options within it. As I said, the only way I could get it to provide my computer with internet was to use Easy Tether Pro, with a USB cable. Far from ideal. I tried rooting, stuffing around with the db file, factory reset, downgrading to Android 5, nothing worked. So back goes the phone.

[Q] Lg Lucid 2 ( VS870 ) wifi tether after root. hotspotprovision.apk

So I rooted my LG Lucid 2 from this guide: http://androidforums.com/lucid-2-al...ition-5-7-13-full-technical-notes-inside.html
The one thing I noticed is that afterwards, tethering by any method (wifi tether, usb tether, bluetooth tether) is now impossible. After doing some research i think that the rooting method removed the system app "hotspotprovision.apk"
I know the root for this phone had to dissable some root checker tool that lg built into the phone, but do you think that removing the hotspot app is necessary? or can i get it back without having my phone tell verizon that i'm messing with my phone (the link tells all about the weird root checking tool LG tried to hide)?
Any help would be awesome! I just need some way to tether due to it being my main source of internet when i am at school.
all apps like pda net, foxfi, wifi tether, and all the other apps just start with errors, and when i try to start up the built in usb tether option i just get an error saying "Sorry! Unfortunately Provision has stopped"
Even with a factory reset and/or re flashing the firmware is still doesnt work.
Has ANYONE else with this phone tried to use any tether apps? If so have they worked or failed? I don't even know if this is happening to just me, or if everyone who owns this phone is without the tether ability
It would just help me a lot to know if somebody else has the same problem or even doesn't. I'm trying to decide if I need to return the phone or if i just need to wait for a software update of some sort..
Thanks guys for the help.

I recommend EasyTether. It works with non-rooted phones, and the LG LUCID that has been rooted. I particularly like the fact that I can use it with both Windows and Linux.
Ok thanks ill give it a shot! Ill let everyone know if it works in a sec
So for some reason no matter what i do, wireless tethering wont work unless i bought the tether service for verizon... i got the usb tether side of foxfi to work but so far wireless tethering is out of the question.
I cant believe no one has posted about this problem except me! Is it literally only me that has this problem? Ive been posting about this all over the internet since the phones release and so far no one has tried to use a tether app to confirm that this is not just a defect with my particular phone!
Im having the same problems
No functional WiFi tethering
But other people have had successes
I going to try usb wired tethering next
Ok cool, thanks for the response. I was able to get usb tethering to work on pda net, but that requires installing another client on my computer as well, and connecting isnt always seamless. I mostly want a wifi hotspot to power all my other wifi only devices once i go off to school at the end of august.
So has anyone figured out how to get the wireless tether working after root? Just curios.
Not that is know of... Head over to android central. They are working on a ROM there which cooooould lead to a tether option in the future
Mine wont work either.

I'm glad I read this thread, because i was about to root my Lucid 2, but I probably would've ran into this problem too. I think some people who have this phone with Verizon Wireless were given a different type of software for tethering. I'm guessing me and you have one of those ones where It only works solo. No mods allowed, but the app below has been said to work regardless. I guess it's worth a shot.
Verizon uses an authentic piece of software for their tethering protocol. I don't know why it seems so mysterious, but it doesn't seem to work exactly like most hotspot protocols. You might have to confess, and get them to help you out. If i were you, and If the original tethering app doesn't work, then try to install the stock firmware back, and use a different root method next time.
-update-
Try 'Tetherfy(WiFi Tether w/o Root) on play store. I don't think i'll be able to make an 'apk' file out of Verizon's 'Mobile Hotspot' app. I believe they have it locked into phone.
The guy's method in the post above might work too. I don't see why not.
hey there
I have noticed your post for a long time and tried various kinds of methods to use wireless tether but failed.
someone told me this device can be flashed to as980 firmware,so i tried and then my android native hotspot function works!
there is my way .
1.download as870 .kdz firmware from somewhere.here is downlaod link(add dots by yourself plz) pan baidu com/s/1ETkrO

2.enable "download mode"on your phone
3.use KDZ_FW_UPD to flash
system will be automaticly restart and you will found that your apps and settings are remained.

Tethering broken (Sprint)

Hey guys,
I'm trying to get my n5 to tether and it just gives me an error as soon as I start the WiFi hotspot (stock). Any idea what could be causing this or now I could fix it?

I am rooted, so if there's some trick to try please do share. I believe I'm paying for the hotspot feature, although going through the change plan process doesn't seem to show that option anywhere (I just tried to find it to see whether or not it was already enabled but I can't find it anywhere on the Sprint site...).

I had tethering working on Sprint via this mod:
add a new entry to the "global" table called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0 in the /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db file.
Just updated to 4.4.2; re-rooted (via WugFresh toolkit) tried tethering and its not working anymore. Not sure if its related to the 4.4.2 or not.
Anyone have a fix?

Thanks, appreciate the help. My issue is different however - the phone seems to start the tethering and I can connect to it through my tablet - but no data seems to flow... can't even run a speedtest on the tablet or load any webpage...
On the T-Mo side, I was afraid that we would lose the tethering with the latest 4.2.2 OTA - and initially, it looked that way. Speedtest would work on download side but "communications issues" on the upload side & unable to finish and show results .... Arrrrrgghhhh.
With two Nexus 5 on hand, it was easy to compare pre- and post- edits, hotspot & speed data, etc. along with comparing the entries in the above mentioned settings.db fields. First, save a coopy of the *.db just in case it is needed - then, added the tether_dun_required and value to 0 as a new entry/line, saved & exit. Reboot device for good measures, and sure enough, it connected by got re-directed to T-Mo's home page ... APN was set to IPv6
Change it to IPv4 and exit, restarted WiFi hotspot and it is good - fast speed and websites loading quickly, etc.
This may, or may not, help out those on Sprint's network - but, worth looking into ...

Hmm, wonder what happened with my config then. I'm in the same boat - stock rooted only. maybe i will try removing the new line in settings.db are re-adding... Right now I can launch hotspot and connect to it from tablet/laptop but no data flows thru the pipe....
I lost my tether after the 4.4.2 update as well. I have a Sprint Nexus 5. My laptop and tablet were able to connect to the hotspot, but no data was coming across.
I looked at the settings.db file and could still see the "tether_dun_required" entry was definitely there. So I decided to replace the settings.db file with a copy I had from before the 4.4.2 update. Rebooted the phone, and magically, tether started working again.
I was curious though to see if I put the post-4.4.2 update settings.db file back, then would I lose my tether? So, once again, I replaced the settings.db file with the post-4.4.2 version, rebooted the phone, and magically, tether still was working! WTF!
The only thing interesting that I noticed during all of this is that every time I replaced the settings.db file on the phone, the corresponding settings.db-journal file would disappear. I don't know much about SQLite, but I wonder if the journal file had some transaction state with the "tether_dun_required" hack removed or not committed.
Anyway, hope this helps.

[HOW-TO] Enable Wifi and USB Tethering on AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 with Android 4.3 MK2

[HOW-TO] Enable Wifi and USB Tethering on AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 with Android 4.3 MK2
After some research on various forums including this one, I got both Wifi and USB Tethering working on my AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 with Android 4.3 (build MK2). Figure others may look for similar solutions so I put together the steps I used in this post.
1. Background
I have been tethering with SVTP (paid version) since acquiring the Galaxy S4 in June 2013, with my unlimited data plan. Then it stopped working after a week when AT&T pushed out the software update. Furious, I googled around and found the "Click the home button when the checking popup appears" trick, and had been happily tethering, until AT&T push another update (MK2) two weeks ago. It defeated that trick and none of the tethering apps work. Oh man, not again!
I googled again and found FoxFi. The wifi tethering didn't work (it only work on Verizon as reported(), but the USB and Bluetooth tethering do work. I am relived as I had a temporal solution. However, both the USB and Bluetooth tethering drop and resume the internet connection every minute. Very annoying when downloading a bigger file, or playing online games that require constant connection. Finally can't stand it anymore. I keep googling around and found there's no other solution except rooting the device. And I decide to take the risk and give it a shot.
2. Result
After following the steps, I was able to get all tethering apps works. Specifically all these works;
SVTP
ES File Manager
FoxFi
And, the native Tethering from the phone also work. This give me the hint that probably most, if not all, tethering apps should work.
Furthermore, the built-in USB tethering also work! Unlike the one from FoxFi, this one work continuously without dropping/resuming the connection every minute. This can be handy as you can charge your phone while tethering. Pretty cool, uh?
Last but not least, I disable the AT&T Software update, so I don't have to do this again
3. Steps
Here's the steps I used. I piece them together from various sources. Many thanks to the folks who put them together, and to the folks who tried before me and post the positive result. Basically you need do to a few things:
a. Root the device
b. Modify the tethering file
c. Turn on tethering and verify it works
d. Disable the AT&T Software update (Optional)
Please see the next post for details.
Steps
a. Root your device
Scary, isn't it? I was in the same boat and really hesitated to do it. However with no other option available it may worth a try. It does work well and give you good control of the phone. Worthy in my opinion, especially when it allows you to do what you want to do.
a1. If you are new to rooting your phone like me, some background reading may help:
http://www.kingoapp.com/help/android-rooting.htm
https://sites.google.com/site/tomsgt123/all-videos/samsung-galaxy-s4
a2. Watch this video as a preparation and confidence building:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uii_mYm8IGE&feature=youtu.be
a3. Root your device using the steps here. It echoes the steps in the video. Even though it is made for the Verizon model, it works on AT&T too:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
b. Modify the tethering file:
b1. Follow the steps in the post. It works:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2535141
b2. Pay attention to the mount /system as RW mode step. It is missing in the original post:
"I was not able to rename files or copy until I change 'Mount R/W'.
To do this, you click on globe/phone on top left corner.
Scroll down to "Root Explorer" and hold for a second or two.
When you let go, a pop-up screen appears. Click on Mount R/W,
and change "/system" from OR to RW."
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48950107&postcount=87
c. Verify tethering works
c1. Use your favorite tethering app, it should work. Just disregard the AT&T Popup (click OK).
And if you don't use any tethering app before, rest at ease. Your phone's native Wifi and USB tethering also work. That maybe the best part as you don't need to purchase any "unlocked" version of those apps. Just go to "Settings->More networks->Tethering and portable hotspot". Turn on Mobile Hotspot and you can use Wifi tethering as usual.
c2. Or while at the same screen, connect your phone to the laptop with a USB cable and enable "USB tethering". Your laptop will automatically install a USB driver and you will be connected to the internet via USB. This option works especially well when all you need is connect one laptop to the internet. It not only saves the battery of your phone by not using Wifi, but also charge your battery while tethering!
c3. Stil not enough? How about make your laptop a wifi hotspot? Follow the steps here:
http://lifehacker.com/5369381/turn-your-windows-7-pc-into-a-wireless-hotspot
This way, you charge your phone while tethering using USB, your laptop is on the web, and others can connect to the internet via the Wifi hotspot on your laptop. It is a win-win-win situation
d. Finally, if you don't want to be annoyed in the future and redo all these again (which may or may not work anymore as they may close the door), turn of AT&T Software update. Follow the steps here:
Stopping AT&T Auto Software Update
Download and install "App Quarantine ROOT/FREEZE" from Play Store.
Open the app and go to settings by tapping on the wrench icon at the top right of the screen.
Uncheck the "Hide system services" option.
Go back to the app and select "AT&T Software update".
Tap on the lock icon on the top right of the screen.
It may ask you to enable the USB debugging.
Feel safe from AT&T's new attack
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387577
Again, many thanks to those who put the information together, and to those who tried it and proved it worked. You guys are great! Happy new year and happy tethering!
Good job!
I'm sure a lot of people will benefit from this.
I can verify that this method works perfectly for my ATT S4 Active ML2 - thank you!!!
Just found this thread today, I've been planning on rooting my phone for some time now and tethering is one of the biggest reasons why.
I just wanted to confirm that this fix has allowed you to tether using the native tethering function in android with an unlimited (grandfathered) AT&T data plan and you haven't had any problems with AT&T harassing you about it. I'm in the same boat and don't want to lose my unlimited data as I've heard as happened to some people.
Also thanks for the guide!
Does anyone know if this will work on non samsung AT&T phones. Like the HTC M8?

Get NATIVE Hotspot Working with Unlimited Data (No Root) on S8

Video instructions are linked below.**
Hey, everyone! I just wanted to share something that I figured out when I was trying to enable my WiFi hotspot on my S8. First of all, I have an AT&T Galaxy S8 (G950U) with Unlimited Data, and my hotspot doesn't typically work at all. When I try to enable it normally, it has to "verify," then it tells me I need to subscribe. However, while playing around with Package Disabler Pro and the hotspot, I figured out how to get the hotspot turned on (running off of unlimited data) without root or any sort of complex workaround. The only things you'll need are a $2 app, ANY WiFi source (even locked), and a supported carrier on your S8 (AT&T, Verizon, and others). Here the steps to get it up and running:
1) Download Package Disabler Pro (by policedeveloper), get it up and running, and search for "tether" in the seach box
2) Three options should pop up ("TetheringProvision", "TetheringAutomation", and "com.qualcomm.qti.tetherservice"). Disable all three packages.
3) Go to your Mobile Hotspot settings and make sure WiFi Sharing is turned ON. Very important.
4) Go to your WiFi Settings and connect to any WiFi network near you, but PURPOSELY put in the wrong WiFi password. It will try to connect for a short time, so you need to be quick on the next step.
5) Quickly enable your mobile hotspot while the phone is still trying to connect to the network with the wrong password. After the hotspot turns on, quickly turn off your WiFi. The hotspot will stay on and continue to run off of your unlimited data!
I actually tested this last year on the Galaxy S7 edge on AT&T, so it works on there as well! I've uploaded the following videos to YouTube as well for the S7 and S8 respectively, so if this helped you, be sure to go click on some ads on my YouTube videos! It helps me out lol.
**S7 edge video: https://youtu.be/w3usivgCFSc
**S8 video: https://youtu.be/f8n6-ZrdIQg
It's worth noting that I'm actually not sure how many carriers this works on. I know it doesn't work on Sprint, but lately it actually started working on Verizon too. I've had some people tell me that it works on other smaller carriers as well, but if it works for you in a different carrier leave a comment below so I can see how many it works on please!
Not seemingly working for sprint. No matter how fast I swap to disable the wifi, if the wifi is disconnected, hotspot it turned off.

Yeah, unfortunately it won't work on Sprint. Turns out they have a different way of checking to see if you're subscribed to tethering. In an OTA update last Friday, Sprint locked down the ##DATA# method and settings are now grayed out for me. The previous Shortcut method I'd used to edit APN settings wasn't working either. I did come a different Shortcut Master search string which allowed me to get in and edit the APN, however. I don't know why from one view it works, but from the other it did not. If memory serves it was looking for LTEfunctionality.
These carriers need a swift kick in the ass for disabling features on these phones.

Oh, I see. That sucks! I don't have a Sprint Galaxy phone, so I can't test anything out, but I wonder if it's still possible through that different search string. I don't really know how any of that works though. What I really wish would happen is for Samsung to actually stand up to these carriers and not keep taking their BS. However, even Apple, as great as they are at this, blocks the hotspot on certain iPhones depending on the carrier and plan...

Yes tf they do. Samsung needs to learn from Apple and stop taking the carriers' BS. That right there would solve a problem a lot of people have with Samsung, but of course they're not going to stop.

U r correct, the ltefunctionality is the place for editing the apns. Search the sprint thread as this method has been posted several times using quickshortcut maker app and searching test to find the directory. Click try then look for lteapn settings and add dun to the default, mms. It should look like the following.... deault, mms, dun
Any prl or profile updates along with android os updates will undo this. So each time any of those update redo the above steps. I'm on 10gb hotspot and have used it for 3 weeks last month with Bill showing no hotspot data used. I'm on sprint
You should've bought an unlocked S8. I have unlimited data on AT&T with an unlocked S8 and the hotspot works just fine.

I never run out of reasons to ensure any phone I buy has root.
Does this method show as you using hot spot and they charge you for using it? I have the unlimited data plan but I am not paying the extra for the hotspot feature because I think it is dumb and should be free anyways as a feature of the phone so I refuse to pay for that service. I have ATT.

Nope! I've been doing this for over a year now, and I've never gotten any notice, warning, or anything from AT&T. I use AT LEAST 100GB of data every month, and several months I've used over 200GB. They haven't charged me a dime even though I'm not supposed to have the hotspot with my unlimited data plan! And I don't use a VPN or anything...

Well cool. I got it to work. I haven't had much time to test it but it seems great.
On Verizon s8 anyone figure out how to get this working. Can't find app "TetheringProvision" or anything similar to disable on my VZ s8 phone.
I found "TetheringAutomation", and "com.qualcomm.qti.tetherservice" and disabled. It still checks subscription and fails.
Thanks!
Solution: Switch to Tmobile

You can get your hotspot working by popping sim tray, unlock phone, open up stopwatch, insert sim tray and start stopwatch at the same time, when the stopwatch hits 8 seconds turn on hotspot from the pull down menu.
I know it takes some work but works every time for me. I will try to post a video for anyone who wants. Working on my verizon s8+. Thanks!

I thought for sure that this was going to be a joke to see how long I would sit there popping my sim and launching apps and such, but WOW.
It actually worked on my third attempt ( VZ S8+)
Thanks again for posting this!:good:
Too easy I just went to Settings > Apps clicked the
overflow menu to show system apps and forced stop tetheringprovision and tetheringautomation. I also disabled tethering provision's access to change system settings.
My hotspot worked right away I'm on ATT UDP
has this stopped working after the lastest ATT update

No Root Hotspot Mod Oreo 8.0 and Below

Hey guys, I have found a way to get hotspot working in Oreo without rooting or paying for the service. Timing seems to be important for Sprint's software to load and block the functionality of the hotspot. This method does work on Oreo, but it also works on all other versions below it as well. Follow the steps below or watch the video at the bottom and post back here if it works!
1. Download and install Shortcut Master Lite from the play store.
2. Open Shortcut Master Lite and search for com.test.ltefunctionality and make sure there are no spaces before or after the query.
3. Open the result ending with LTEFunctionalityTest and find LTE APN Setting in the list and tap it.
4. Open APN2 EHRPD internet and scroll to APN type. See if you can edit it. If so then great! Add ,dun to the end and to the same for APN2 LTE internet and you're done! If you cannot edit, which is likely on Oreo, then continue with the steps.
5. Some have had success with rebooting the phone and getting into Shortcut Master Lite quickly after the reboot. For others this does not work. You can try it and see for yourself.
6. Open up the dialer and type ##27263# This resets your carrier customization settings and reboots the phone.
7. Upon reboot, follow steps 2 through 4 again and it WILL work. Make sure you save your changes when editing the APN Types.
8. Verify your hotspot is working by toggling it on and connecting a device.

I got this to work on my Galaxy S9+ for the last two weeks. As of 5/29/18 it has quit working and If I redo the procedure it immediately catches it and shuts it off.

id like to know as well
Is there a way to get this to work on verizon? The old sim card trick no longer works on Oreo.
Does this still works? Also I'm suppose to have unlimited plan, but once I use certain amount of data the speed get drastically reduced, is there a way to avoid or bypass the speed limit on Sprint?
Btw OP love the Insaniquarium profile pic haha

I just used this on my note 8 with the CRE1 update and it worked great.
Now does anyone know if it works on the s8?
Hello, I was using an app (shortcut master lite) to modify hotspot to work. But now when I go into shortcut master it's all greyed out. I cannot select anything. Can someone help to enable so I can get hotspot to working again.

I have an S8+ and basically modified this setting via ADB way back on Android 7 and it has persisted all the way through the upgrade to Oreo. I am currently on CRG3 and it still works. One trick to note is to turn off mobile data, turn on the hotspot, and then turn mobile data back on. Has been working since I got this phone back in May 2017...
Now to see if the ADB method will work on the Note9 in a few days...

Hey guys, I have written an app that makes this process pretty easy. Shortcut Master Lite is no longer available on the Play Store.
