Hello folks,
My Pixel arrived today, and the first thing that I did was unlock the bootloader.
I've only ever owned Nexus devices (gnex, nexus 5, and the nexus 5x), and I did the old fastboot oem unlock (Yes, I booted into android first, toggle the "OEM unlocking" first, and then booted into the fastboot to unlock the bootloader).
Only after I spent some time setting up the phone the way I like it, I remembered that last year there was a change for the Nexus 6P and 5X. fastboot flashing unlock.
Can someone tell me what exactly the difference is between "oem unlock" and "flashing unlock". Everything went smoothly and my bootloader is unlocked, but is it going to cause issues down the road because I did not run the "flashing unlock" command?

Hey guys,
So i went to walmart a couple days ago and bought the virgin mobile Moto G. The first thing i did when i got home was root it. Turns out that the phone i got does not work for my plan. so i need to return it, and i'd like to make it completely stock for warranty reasons. The only problem is that i can't get the bootloader to relock. I've tried using the Windroid universal android tool and have followed this guide with the correct files for my phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2646415. Everything Went fine, phone is completely stock..but the bootloader still says its unlocked. Could anyone help me with this?
Thanks!

Scroll to the bottom of the post and you will find how to lock it again.
@eddie298 - Once Bootloader has been unlocked, it's permanent. Fastboot screen will always state unlocked, even if you do so-called 'OEM relocking' - Fastboot command:
fastboot oem lock
The bootloader unlock option is no longer greyed out and I've been able to unlock through fastboot oem unlock......... Am I a massive idiot or has this changed since 10 minutes ago? I am 100% sure it was the EE/Verizon version
EDIT: I'm using EE not Verizon
Hey all,
A quick question here. I realize that this phone just got released and the tools from our diligent devs are being either worked on or already released.
Will the oneplus 8 bootloader be easier to unlock without hassling with an unlock token (i.e. oneplus 7t). I've used the msm tool with my oneplus 6t (t-mobile version)
Please advise.
NOTE: I can already see some of you out there trying to be a smart ass or be an asshole about this. Like most of us, we are trying to accomplish something, not entertain your ego or justify your miserable existence. We've all seen it.
Mods: delete this.
I just hit allow OEM unlocking in developer options and typed "fastboot oem unlock" in fastboot. It wiped the phone and the bootloader was unlocked. Easy peasy. ?️

It's all done now. I had to wait for the unlock code from oneplus.com

Which version of your device was 'easy peasy'?
So I went through steps to "un-grey" the OEM unlocking in dev settings, and success! I got it to work and immediately booped the option and restarted. But when I typed "fastboot flashing unlock", I still get "Flashing unlock is not allowed". Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Afaik, the phone was only ever used on ATT, not the cursed Verizon.

I think there is currently no solution to unlock bootloader yet for greyed out OEM option.
even if you got the un-grey OEM option as Pixel 2 has a security chip that blocks the unlocking ( unlike OG Pixel that doesn't have )
I'm in the same boat as the OP. I have the option to turn on 'OEM unlocking' so when I attempted to unlock my bootloader last night I received FAILED (remote: 'Flashing Unlock is not allowed') in the command prompt. Now 'OEM unlocking has been greyed out after the failed attempt. What's going on here?
Currently trying to root my google pixel 2. The guy who sold me this phone said it was unlocked but I guess that was a LIE. When it arived, It had a verizon SIM card and the OEM unlockd button was grayed out. Surprisingly, this method actually managed to get the grayed out OEM unlock button to turn blue:
Here’s an easy method to bootloader unlock a Verizon Pixel or Pixel XL
There's now a simple method to unlock the bootloader of your Verizon-branded Google Pixel or Pixel XL. Give your phone new life!

However, after I ran "adb reboot bootloader" the command "fastboot oem unlock" still failed. And after the OS booted, the button was grayed out again.
1. What is actually going on here? Why does this method seem to work for some people?
2. Is there any way to get around this?

I just tried my AT&T SIM card in the phone and it worked... So the phone is not even carrier locked, but the bootloader is locked.
If you can reactivate the OEM unlock button try using 'fastboot flashing unlock' rather than the OEM unlock command. Mine wasn't carrier locked but fastboot flashing unlock unlocked my bootloader.
Had the same drama unlocking a pixel I had and fastboot flashing unlocked sorted the bootloader once I'd activated the OEM unlock button.

I tried that after using the exploit in the OP to get the unlock OEM button. Didn't work.
I'm pretty much done with this POS phone.

Fair enough mate, worth a try but definitely sounds like it's the end of the road for unlocking it sadly. Might be time to sell it on mad move on to something else.
