Anyone move a Sprint S5 to Straight Talk and keep their number? - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got a buddy with a sprint s5 and wants to move to straight talk. His number is used for business so it's very important he keeps the number.
Anyone do this before? What was the process? I figured call sprint, get them to unlock the phone, get the straight talk sim kit from walmart, then call straight talk, get them to port the number and activate the imei on their end, then call sprint to cancel?

i moved my number to ST. The problem youre going to encounter is the LNP (local number portability) is based on the user having proper access to be able to port it. Youre gooing to need the account # and the password or pin for the "from" account to be able to bring it to the "to" account and when i was working in the telephony industry, even the name on the account had to match. This can be done by setting the account up with a matching name then changing it later.

Phone # already registered to GV plz help!

I want to use Google voice. When I try and set it up from my PC it says the phone # is already in use on a different voice account and won't let me proceed .
I called sprint and they told me its a Google problem. I emailed Google support I found but that was a few weeks ago.
How can I get my phone # removed from an unknown Google account and set it up with my Gmail account ?
I've searched and Google but can't find any answers:
So let me get this straight. When someone calls your phone and leaves a message you have no way of retrieving that?
What happens if you install GV on your android phone. Doesn't it then know which number is on your phone device?
Seems like it should work as long as you sing in on your phone with the same Google account you are trying to setup GV on.
That is correct.
I have tried to install Google voice on my phone as well and it gets to the part where it verifies your phone # . Every time it says your phone # could not be verified. Sprint did tell me I could change my # but there must be a better way ?
OK. Here is another question as I research things (many similar cases).
Did you setup your phone with this GV account and no longer have access to it or you had recently acquired a new number which was already attached to a GV account outside of your control?
The first android phone I had a Samsung moment and I set GV up on it . Then I had an epic and at one point had GV setup with the same gmail account i always use. I've had this phone # since 2006. The phone I'm using now I have never been able to set GV up on.
This is driving me crazy it seems like I'm missing something really really stupid and simple.
So far I've found that dialing *730 and then dial button should remove the forwarding on your phone.
If not, call sprint and tell them you have setup call forwarding on your phone and you would like it to be removed. Don't even mention GV. They should be able to help you and after that you should be able to complete GV setup.
This is what GV does. It sets your phone with forwarding and this can simply be reverted on your carrier side. The sprint rep juts didn't know anything about GV.
I dialed the *730 number and it beeped then hung up then I called sprint and asked them to remove forwarding on this number. She said that's all taken care of. Still can not get GV to verify the phone # and on the PC it still says this number is already in use on another account. Reading around the inter webs it seems a pretty common issue with no resolution? How is that possible

It may seem odd but try another phone. I mean have them replace it for you. It may be something backed into that phone which is stuck and won't release the forwarding.
I still have my epic I could put it back on my sprint account and try it. Thanks , will let u know how it goes
GV is good when it works but terrible when it doesnt... GV Support will never get back to you...
I had an issue that I ported a number OUT of GV to a cell phone and would never get text messages... Took me 2 weeks to figure it out but the service providers thought my phone was a landline and would reject SMS.. There was no easy fix so I had to bite the bullet and get a new number...
I'm just going to get a new number I think . Might be refreshing

[Q] Google Voice on Mobilicity or Wind Mobile? (Canada)

The google voice app has never worked on my phone, always giving me some message about it being for US only.
But today i tried it from my phone and it actually allowed me to set up an account. It stopped at the screen where i was setting up my voicemail pin and said "We have a problem. Your phone number could not be verified. Please try again.". So far i havent been able to get past that screen.
I was able to make google voice calls on my laptop today so it seems like they are allowing use in Canada finally. Does anyone know if its possible to use google voice on mobilicity or wind?
I am curious because mobilicity has a new plan with unlimited calls texts and data for 25 a month, but no voicemail. If i can use google voice as my voicemail then obviously that wont be a problem.
don't know if you checked this out already, but read the post below...I think it should explain what you're looking for....
http://community.windmobile.ca/windmobile/topics/using_google_voice_on_your_phone?from_gsfn=true
Thanks, its too bad that the workarounds discussed in that post still dont offer a solution for voicemail, but that will probably be useful information for future reference.
I did find a solution to this problem without using google voice if anyone is interested. I may as well share it.
To those who are interested in this plan but wont sign up without voicemail:
- You can get a free phone number and a customizable answering machine from http://www.freephoneline.ca/ (if you cant get a toronto number you can use thornhill, richmond hill, etc to avoid forwarding to a long distance number)
- Then set your phone to forward your unanswered, busy, and unavailable incoming calls to your freephoneline number.
- Then set your voicemail access number to the corresponding number on this list http://www.freephoneline.ca/vmAccessNumbers
- Also make sure to set your freephoneline to only ring once before going to voicemail, you can do this by logging into your account on their website and going to your settings
- You now have $25 BTS + Voicemail! When people call your regular phone number and you dont answer, it will forward them to your voicemail on your freephoneline number, and you can check your voicemail from your cell phone the same way you always would.
I believe they also provide the option to automatically transcribe your voicemails and email them to you in text form.
EDIT: Apparantly call forwarding is $5 more, if thats true this wouldnt work. Another option would be using Dell Voice on the android market.
Its an app gives you a canadian number with the area code of your choice and can be used to make and receive calls anywhere in canada and US for free, and customizable voicemail. It uses your carrier data to do this, but since this plan has unlimited data that shouldnt be a problem. The only problem is you would have to get used to making and receiving all your calls through an app, and using your dell voice number as your primary number.
Might be worth the extra $5 to get call features and add the freephoneline voicemail via the method above, the $5 call features addon on the mobilicity website includes Call Waiting, Call Forwarding and 3-Way Calling, (plus voicemail via fpl). Thats basically $30 for the $29 plan i currently have with wind except that it doesnt expire in a year and go up to $45 =/

[Q] Transferring Atrix 2 to Tmobile

I just switched my unlocked Atrix 2 phone from ATT to Tmobile. I can make and recieve both phone calls and text messages. Unfortunately, I have been unable to get voicemail to work. When I dial the number, I get a menu that asks for my phone number and then says that it cannot find an account for that number. I've tried talking to tmobile, and there only solution was to wait up to 72 hours for the number porting to complete. Is there a chance that this is some setting I need to change, or will I just need to wait.
On a side note, if I try to enable a mobile hotsot, I get a message that it is not allowed by my att account. Will this ultimately switch/is there a setting I can change, or will i never be able to use this feature.

[Q] HTC One M8 VZW + Google Voice?

Quick version: Is it possible; if so, how?
Longer version: I see that I can port my number to Google Voice, but since I just signed a contract with Verizon 2 months ago, won't this A) royally tick them off or more likely B) trigger an ETF like I signed up with another provider? Porting my number to Verizon is how I left my last carrier. Though, Google isn't a carrier.
Like my last carrier, the Google Voice app cannot configure voicemail automatically. It has to be done via the number porting thing.
I suppose the best thing is to go ask Verizon, but I won't have time to do that until Monday afternoon, and I'm here now, among people who know Verizon better than I do, so I figured I'd cast a line here and hope somebody knows what's what.

Yes you can but yes it will close your verizon account and they will bill you the etf. The google voice is a good choice though its $20 to port your number but you will never lose your number then and google wont charge anything more than the $20 port fee. You can then receive free calls and texts over wifi. And when you get new service with a new number you can forward your calls and texts from your google voice number to your new number or just use the google voice app to receive your calls and texts from your google voice number. This is good quality calls too and both calls and texts over wifi. Getting texts over wifi is a big deal as most texting apps you cannot receive texts over wifi so if you have no cell signal but have wifi you can still make and receive calls and texts. I use it myself.
Yes, it's possible. I'm in the process of writing a tutorial to do it. Check back in the new threads to see it soon!
You don't have to port your number to use Google Voice for voicemail - just go through the automatic setup steps and when you get to the step that it says it can't automatically configure, go to Voicemail->Service->Google Voice (from My Carrier) and you're set. I'm currently on a CM rom so the exact settings options might be named slightly differently.
I seem to remember there being an extra step somewhere the first time you ever set it up but I don't remember since I did it many years ago. Bottom line is that using Google Voice for voicemail is very possible and doesn't require any porting of numbers.
There is a number u have to dial to get your voicemail set up as google. Its in the directions in the voice app.

Change outgoing caller ID to business number

Is there a way to change the outgoing caller ID on my cellphone to my business number?
The reason I am asking is because I have a VoIP-based business phone system (we host it ourselves) and my extension forwards to my cell phone when I am not in the office. It would be nice to be able to call people back from my cellphone and have it show my business number so that customers don’t inadvertently wind up with my cellphone number.
Right now I call back into our phone system and then place an outgoing call from there. But that means I cannot simply call using the dialer app and it’s difficult to do via the Bluetooth in my car because the second number (the customer’s number) as to be manually entered on the phone. It would be a lot nicer if Bell Mobility (or any carrier) could just replace my cell phone number with our business number.
Ideally I could do this for all of our technicians (who have company cell phones) so that their cellphones just becomes another extension on the system.
The Fish
They can replace your number, port it. Outside of that nothing you can do because they don't know what a business call is and what a personal call is to try and switch back and forth between your CID.
What we would do on FreePBX is create a account for the cellphone, have the boss use a SIP app on his phone, and then set the outbound CID for the account, that way when your calling someone back you just dial through the SIP app and select the outbound he wants (was running 4 companies at once and just had to use a prefix to set the ID he wanted) vs calling in and having to do a bunch of extra steps. Only thing is setting up policy for his phone to connect. I had a web site that they could authenticate through an then would add that to iptables so that they could connect since your IP will probably change occasionally, check out Dynamic Good Guys
There's really no easy way to go about it and it's all personal preference, and I know what you mean about people getting your cell number. I did on-site business and customer repairs and second someone gets your number it's calls all hours of the night, where if they used business number after-hours ivr would have caught it and left me alone.
