I'm sure a lot of you have seen the Lenovo Lephone with it's attachable hardware keyboard/dock thing. If not check it out:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/11/lenovo-lephone-seen-again-os-cues-taken-from-skylight/
Essentially the phone snaps into this plastic cover that has a hardware keyboard and turns into a foldable phone (like an LG Voyager or something) with a hardware keyboard. Anyone think we'll be seeing anything like this come out for the nexus or other future/past android phones with no hardware keyboards? It's actually a great idea because it has an extended battery along with it i believe. What do you guys think? Would anyone support this type of attachment for android phones? (By using an accessory with an app or something) And would any android users buy something like this?

I would support something like that because I love gadgets. But then I think to myself why would I want something the size of a PlayStation Portable (PSP) in my pocket? But it does look nice. How would this thing work as far as answering incoming calls? Would you have to take it out of the case to answer calls? And if it extended the battery life on my phone that would always be a plus. Idk I would have to think if I would want to carry something so big just to use as a keyboard.

Well maybe it wouldn't be that big. Say it only made your phone twice as thick and maybe it could have an external mic for answering calls. And of course there's always headphones and speakerphone for phone calls.

If it would make my phone as big as lets per say the touch pro 2 then I wouldnt mind. Any bigger then that I think would be annoying to carry around. You would want something like that just to use as a keyboard? Is the keyboard on the N1 that bad? I like the whole on screen keyboard. It saves me time from cleaning my screen and keyboard if I had one. Plus hardware keyboards tend to get very greasey and after a while and it would have to take a while, the keys start sinking into the phone. My G1 for example, the keyboard looked nasty before I switched to the nexus. I couldn't even sell it to a stranger if I wanted to because the way the keyboard looked. Don't get me wrong I kept up with cleaning my keyboard but it just don't look the same as the first day I got the phone. I'm sure a lot of people will agree with that.
I know I would definitely be interested. I wouldn't have the phone in said 'keyboard dock' type thing all the time, I would only use it when I need it (either need the extended battery, or need to punch out a couple emails or the phone needs lots of use).
And I would probably also make use of it when wanting to play games/emulators, because then I'd have a hardware keyboard to map keys to.
I'd definitely buy one if it was <$125, it would probably just live in my messenger bag.
I actually was thinking the other day this would be great for the N1, I had not seen the LePhone before though.
It is feasible if the dock connector is capable or passing signal as well as power. I would use it upon occasion for certain. I can make due with the on screen keyboard but I definitely would like to have a HW one as well. With something like this you get the best of both worlds. Thin and light most of the time and a keyboard for when you need to do more typing than usual.
Of course if Android would just support HID I would be just as happy and carry a foldable BT keyboard around.

I have no idea what you do with your phone, but I text every day (alot

I've had the g1 since day one it was announced. Pre-ordered and all. I've texted a lot. I was referring to moments like you would get done eating like some BBQ wings and then go text right after. Yes you would wipe or clean your hands but the sauce would still remain. I abused my g1 LOL.

Wipe your hands before you use your phone. Seriously, I don't understand how on earth you ate wings and didn't wipe your hands before texting. I send 3k to 4k texts a month as well as a ton of email and I just sold my G1 for a nice price.
Yes, I would definitely be interested in something like this even if I had to attach it every time I needed it. There are times that I need to type a lot (taking notes, for example) and a HW keyboard is the way to go.

am i alone in my desire (excuse the pun, check sig ) for a kb dock? preferably one with a touch pad

Personally I think a keyboard dock is a bit silly. I love my tablet for being totally mobile. If I want a machine with a keyboard (even temporarily), I take one of my netbooks.
If you really need a physical a keyboard, get the Xoom dock and a bluetooth keyboard...mischief managed.
As for Moto or a third party releasing a keyboard dock....highly unlikely. I think the odds of Moto making one, as they are already focusing on recouping some of their losses from the Xoom with new tablets, are nil. A third party might if there was enough of a market for it...but there isn't, so I doubt anyone would.

i hear you, but wouldn't it be great to have the choice of, err, transforming your tablet into a netbook, instead of having to go out and buy one? i already have a big laptop so i really don't want to go out and buy a netbook. a keyboard dock would have done so nicely.
to be honest, the main reason why i want a dock is for those times when i rdp into my work computer while i'm in bed. i don't think the normal dock and bluetooth kb would work so well when i'm in bed...
you're probably right though, we'll probably never see a kb dock. but i'm seriously hoping that we're both wrong.
Yea, i agree on hoping to get a keyboard dock. It would be nice and easy rather than me having to carry the keyboard and the standard dock around if i go anywhere =P

I bought this phone from amazon a week ago or so. And it is fast and good specs and battery is not that bad. But its keyboard is crap. I check out apple keyboards and they are very good and space between letters and I can easily type while with p20 keyboard it is like walking through mud. Slow and every couple secs I have to delete a whole word cuz I pushed the wrong button.
I had a huawei y300 which is a 4 inch screen phone and that even has a better keyboard than p20.
My p20 has swift key and gboard and both are not good cuz by default p20 has a very jammed keyboard and swift key and gboard can't change that.
My question is does anyone else find this annoying? I am thinking of returning my p20 back to amazon and consider buying a phone with a better keyboard and I don't even know which phone to go to but I have used it for a week and I'm already annoyed by this problem.
Never had an iphone but I am kinda tempted to get one just because of its keyboard as I type a lot and find iphone keyboards 1000 times better than this p20 crap.
Change the keyboard then...

Is this your first android? Ever heard of the play store? Plenty of keyboards there.
SwiftKey let's you increase the size (heights) of the keys at the cost of screen space, which shouldn't be an issue which such a long screen.
Otherwise, like the others have said, just download another keyboard. The phone itself isn't really a factor that affects typing.
Yeah swiftkey lets you to increase its height but that doesn't solve the problem. I also downloaded like over 5 keyboards and none of them feel comfortable as a good keyboard or like an iphone. If you guys have any suggestions let me know. Cuz I think if a phone's original keyboard is small then all the keyboards you download is affected by that and will be crappy.

Just got my P20 last night, I installed the Gboard Beta right away after all initial setup is done. No issues with typing.
I'm using the Xperia keyboard on my new p20. I've been using it in like 4 or 5 past phones, and it's great. Search for it here on the xda forums
A little vent session: I’ve had note phones since the note 2 and I love them. I can’t stand iPhones but when it comes to making tablets, Apple is leaps and bounds ahead. Samsung has never been able to get it right...
Tab S3- Laggiest least usable piece of hardware I’ve ever owned.
Tab S4- Keyboard is almost unusable because the keys double & triple type all of the time.
Tab S5- didn’t bother, neither did Samsung.
Tab s6 - Keyboard deactivates when you swing it around to the back but it won’t properly activate the on-screen keyboard., now the WiFi cuts out every 10 minutes and requires a reboot to be able to get it to work. Seriously, Samsung should stop making attempts, they find a new way to mess it up every time.
how's that trackpad mouse support on your ipad? oh wait.. no mouse support!
How big of an SDcard can you add to the ipad? oh wait no SDCard support!
How is playing your games from your Note Phone on you Ipad? Oh wait Apple has banned account sharing with android.
Typing this up on the keyboad with mouse support. Is it perfect? Hell No, is it better than letting Apple decide what is possible and what is not? F Yes.
I can deal with tearing off the keyboaed rather than wrappig it around to the back until they fix the firmware. You kep waiting for mouse support in IOS.
Interesting I find most people frustrated with samsung(or android) are frustrated because they couldn't open the box and have everything the wanted without having the change any settings or install any apps. Apple appeals to the masses who just want it to work(as defined by apple). Don't get me wrong that's a valuable thing and a valid reason for a lot of people. Also Apple makes a hell of a piece of hardware, but that OS is just so vanilla brown bag I just can't use it.

I'm no stranger to customizing Android devices, I've rooted most of my phones over the years and I also know which apps to install. I'll agree with you about iOS, I'm not a huge fan of how much control Apple needs to have but at the very least I can connect to Wi-Fi. That's something I can't say about my Samsung tablet. Also all of the Apple branded accessories have worked right out of the box. I can't say that about Samsung either.
no issues here with wifi, though I did exhange one tab for another to resolve poor battery life. Ive use both at home and on my work wifi without a problem. Here's one I just found, if you are in dex mode and have keyboard attached, then the on screen keyboard button works as epected.
This thread ??
My tab s6 has been reset once since purchase and wifi has never dropped out. This tab is very premium... Imo this is a shallow argument and 100% click bait.

I had no major issues with the S3 the Samsung software at the time was not very smooth. The S4 keyboard worked well with mine. I never saw any kind of multiple keystrokes. No idea about Wifi on Tab S6 because it never cut off on mine. Maybe you should have swapped yours out for a hardware defect. The S6 is far and away the best android tablet available. As for the keyboard folding around back there a couple threads with ways to fix this. If you cannot search or contact Samsung when you have an issue, maybe you should just stick with Apple and stop making threads like this.

So, if you experience no issues with the S4 keyboard you are in the minority and if you've never had an issue with another Samsung tablet then you must have the Magic Touch. Check the threads. You're right, this is the best Android tablet available right now and I want to love the damn thing but I feel like Samsung screws something up every time. I have contacted Samsung support and I do know how to search. The issue with the keyboard has only a somewhat serviceable work around and only if you use the Samsung keyboard. I like gboard. . Also, I started this thread stating that I was going on a bit of a rant, if you cannot handle someone criticizing a product that has real issues maybe you should just stick with not looking at the threads or just not responding.

Tab S4 was my first Samsung tablet and I LOVED it. I had the same infuriating issue with the keyboard, but a couple months ago, Samsung pushed an update that fixed it. I only sold my S4 so I could buy an S6. Now I'm just waiting for it to ship. Backordered until October 4th, unfortunately.
Sorry you've had a rough go of it. Technology is a fickle beast. Sounds like your WiFi issues may be an issue with your router, or you got a faulty Tab S6. Should be covered by warranty. The keyboard thing does sound annoying, and I've contemplated how I'll work around it when mine arrives. For now, I'll probable detach the keyboard when not using it. But I believe Samsung support said they are already working on a software fix for it.
But iPad may just suit your needs better. I just can't stand the iOS ecosystem. I have to use an iPhone for work, and I'm sure in the next year or two they will force an iPad on me. I prefer Android, and the Galaxy Tab S4 was a brilliant piece of tech. Loved every minute of using it and miss having it with me now.
And on another note the iPad keyboards have always been worse with mushy keys

I didn't realize that Samsung had pushed a fix for the keyboard however that's still really stinks because they did it just in time for them to release a new tablet. I honestly hate the iOS ecosystem too.. it's far too Limited in far too bland for what I'm looking for, that's why I bought every single Samsung tablet since the note 10.1. The most frustrating part I find about them is that they are so close to being good and it's stupid little things that should have been taken care of pre-production or at the very least as soon as they popped up that keep me having to go back to the iPad. Maybe when the LTE version of this tablet is released they will have resolved the issues.

What does "swing it around to the back mean?" If you mean folding it under so it's sitting keys down on a table wouldn't it be easier to take it off and just use the kickstand? I'm curious what use cases require swinging the keyboard around back and why an Apple tablet does that better.

What I want
One thing I really want from Samsung is a true iPad Pro 12.9 competitor. The Tab S6 screen is too small especially with the aspect ratio. I would like a wider and larger screen.
They tried that with the galaxy book, no one cared.

Tab S5e seems to be a really good one for me.
Wi-Fi isn't much a problem because I know how to avoid it.
PD works fine with PD accessories.
S5e is the first S series because I don't like 4:3 screen
I agree. I don't like Ios at all. But I have an ipad for years from my job. I use it only there. For my personal use I got the tab s2/4/6 , the sony ones, huawei, xiaomi...... And when you know all the « good» tab, it's obvious that IPAD is so far better.
And it's not really about « apple is the best» , but more about « other brands doesn't care anymore about tabs» ....
Ios 13 is pretty good about tab, when android still not adapted at all for big screens.
Samsung keyboards are Junk! The S6 as a Tablet is Excellent. Ditch the Samsung Keyboard and get the Logitech Illuminated K810 Keyboard and an MX Anywhere S2 mouse. They are perfect for tablets using Bluetooth. Love mine! The keyboard is just a bit wider than the tablet and mouse is small. It's really a joy to use with the Tab S4 and now the S6.
Hi, guys! I've been an Apple user for more then 2 years and now I'm thinking of switching back to Android. Particulary, to Pixel 7 Pro which I find the most preferable to me at the moment among all androids. But... one of the reason why I want to switch is the lack of customization on iPhone and many features Android delivers meanwhile Apple doesn't. However, people complain about stock Pixel 7 Android which lacks of numerous options and features whose OnePlus, Xiaomi, Samsung etc have. Inability to hide Google Search bar and weather widget from Home Screen without custom launcher and so on. Should I take a look at other vendors if I want true freedom and wide customization after Apple user experience? Or maybe it's not that bad in comparison?
I for one love At A Glance and the Google search widget. If you're more of a I want everything off the screen or whatever, then yeah, you can achieve it. That's apart of the freedom to use custom launchers.
If you want, you can search the Play Store for "launchers" and look at the screenshots just to get an idea of the different stuff available from the 2 years you were gone(?), but I'm sure the same launchers are still around.
Lastly, these things can be achieved with root for the Pixel Launcher. I'm not too sure about fully hiding the At A Glance widget, but the Google Search bar is replaceable.
Honestly Google pixel devices are the best in customization regard as they have one of the best custom rom support of any android phone. Honestly these Xiaomi and OPPO phones are really not gonna give you that "Premium" feel in terms of software. Yes there is more stuff in terms of features but the software is really bloated and loaded with addware which you can remove with a lot of hard work but you are better of just using a launcher and third party tweaks on a pixel. If you want supreme level of customization and features you can also install custom roms to a pixel and get more features and customization. The main reason for avoiding these other brands is that except Samsung and Google Pixel all other brands will only give you around only 2 years of software support. Google makes Android itself so buying a phone from them is a no-brainer. Also the speed and reliability improvement in stock android on pixel compared to others is just crazy. Also the camera experience on pixel is also amazing.
Final conclusion -
Buy a pixel.
Install your choice of operating system on it. Its a Pixel, that's what its for.
I have been an Android user all my life. I switched to Iphone but instantly returned because Android just has all the flexibility which IOS doesn't and customizability is on another level, especially with the "Material You" theming and Pixel exclusive widgets which other vendors lack in their versions of Android, and besides, most of the Pixel exclusive features wash away every other Android skin. If you can root the device, the possibilities are even more endless. And not to mention the amazing camera and other software features Pixel offers. I use Pixel Experience custom rom on my Samsung Galaxy S10+ and I love it. I definately recommend the PIxel 7 series as that offers the only "true" Android Experience.
And if you want to get rid of the At a glance widget and search bar you can either root the Pixel Launcher and replace it with another widget like I have, or you can install Lawnchair 12, as that very closely follows the stock Pixel launcher but you will loose those smooth animations if you do use it. So its up to you if you want functionality over animations.

Just grabbed the Pixel 7 Pro for work but my personal device is an iPhone. It's been a while since I've had android. Right off the bat I'll tell you this phone is slippery. I'm so used to the boxy design of the iPhone 12/13/14 that this curved display is throwing me off. Hard to use with one hand.
It really depends on how deep in the apple ecosystem you are in. If you aren't a Mac/iPad/Watch user then it should be a clean breakup. Expect to get kicked out of group messaging. iMessage is the biggest dealbreaker for me.
Software wise the world is your oyster. You'll have to buy your Pixel factory unlocked if you want full control cos if you get it through you carrier you will most likely not be able to unlock your bootloader.
Again, it's been a while since I was on Android but I remember having an unlocked bootloader is key to rooting/flashing roms.
I used to use nova launcher, not sure if that's still the go to now-a-days.
Hardware wise the buttons are a bit too recessed for my liking. I hate that all the buttons are on one side. All the advantages android used to have over apple are gone. No more headphone jack, no more SD card, no IR blaster or removable battery. I will say I love the fingerprint scanner and prefer it over facial recognition.
Apps are hit or miss. I prefer the iOS version of Instagram/twitter. I have a lot of bugs on the pixel 7 pro.
I am most likely returning the phone. As a flagship device it leaves a lot to be desired.

Actually, that's the point. I didn't root to Apple ecosystem. I have Windows gaming laptop, Smart TV on Android which have poor synchronization with my iPhone. Thus, I have hard time backing up my photos and videos from iPhone due to slow Lightning and inability of Windows to recognize iOS file system properly. It makes me mad. That's why I would like to switch back to Android as well. Pixel 7 Pro is supposed to work with my other devices just fine, considering Windows 11 implements Android features in future, and USB Type-C... I as an Apple user don't know what it's like to transfer big files from iPhone to laptop for literally seconds...
I don't know why people are so averse to the idea of installing a different launcher. I mean all that those other companies are doing is re-skinning Android anyway.
It breaks down to this - if you want the most customization out of the box, you get Samsung. If you want the quickest updates, to be able to run custom ROMs, not deal with a bloated UI, and make the customizations you want yourself, you get the Pixel.
Avoid all the cheap Chinese brands like OnePlus, Oppo, and Xiaomi. They all have major software problems and they don't listen to the complaints of their customers...

I can see your points as valid arguments, but its probably that way because you are having an iPhone as your daily driver, and because most developers keep an iPhone in mind first and optimize for it first, so you probably are used to all apps working perfectly on iPhone, and I too wasn't used to the hardware, but when it starts becoming a muscle memory, its all smooth sailing from there , atleast for me.
