Low light - Google Pixel XL Real Life Review

At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the Google Pixel XL's camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.

I posted a link to my picture folder I have on google photos under the main picture section of The Real Life Review section. There are some low light photos in there that compare the normal google camera on the pixel to the manual FV-5 app in low light. I have to admit I am throughly surprised by how well it does in low light. Usually you'd need OIS in order to compensate your hand shake for lower light photos to turn out. Using the normal google camera the super low light photos pretty much sucked. But using manual modes through FV-5 I got it to .5 second shutter open (The highest you can set it) and up to 10k ISO. I know 10k is insanely high but when the shutter won't stay open for more than .5 seconds even on manual, you need a higher ISO to compensate. And it allows just as much light in as my LG G5 did on 20 second manual mode. Mind you, the 20 second manual mode at 800 ISO is going to be MUCH MUCH less grainy than on the Pixel.
But the fact the pixel can get the colors right and show so much detail in .5 seconds is nuts. I'm attaching the Google Camera App low light photo and the one for the FV-5 manual photo

There's a bit more noise than what I would prefer, but the colours and brightness are phenomenal.

I was just going to post a question on this. This is the same picture, my front porch, dim porch light behind me. No flash and flash. I reproduced the effect several times. I'm probably going to try and return the phone tomorrow in hopes it's hardware. If other people have the same results though......

There's so much noise because the ISO was boosted to an obscenely high 10k. A third party camera app with manual controls had to be used to achieve that, because no automatic mode would ever go to such a high light sensitivity.
Edit for additional elaboration: I say this because the way you've worded your post leaves ambiguity in terms of whether you're blaming the phone itself for the presence of noise

It's a decent low light performer. Although the lack of OIS shows sometimes if you don't have a steady hand.

I wanted to try low light so I went out of my way to try the camera in a few cheesy museums in Niagara Falls. They were very dark and my flash on went off once. The pictures were great.

Mine is terrible. I get random colors, either washed out white or green. Nothing intelligible in the pics. If I snap the same shot every time I will eventually get a clear one. It's like the sync between flash/shutter is off on most of the pictures.

Can't seem to focus

Did some testing with the XL and the S7 edge seeing a live band and while the XL kickass in daylight, the edge won hands down when it comes to taking pics inside low light....XL produced grainy, slightly blurred pics...XL was set to 16:9 8m and the Edge was set to 16:9 9.1m.....I still love my XL though

Really? In auto-mode? Currently I´ve testing both phones. The S7 really sucks in auto-mode in low light, but with manual controls I can produce better or sharper shots than with the pixel.

Nice comment.. because I like to buy a s7 edge or pixel xl and.. I still undecided.

tried to up load pics but files are too big and i get a error

6:15 am... Some artifacts, but most phones wouldn't have shown anything.

From what i've seen I have yet to be that impressed with low light shots.... i still have one a XL on order, I don't get why google yet again left OIS out. Its not like they were trying to keep the price down this time.

nice !

For iso 10,000 that is super clean!

Certainly not as good as my old S7 Edge for lowlight

Almost can't tell the difference when using the flash or not (in a good way). Surprisingly impressed!
Comparable to my iPhone 6 Plus. Colors are more saturated like a Samsung but overall great camera.
I had a birthday party I went to today and it was in a low light situation. The HDR+ photos came out very good to me.
Where my Note 4 camera failed to perform in very low light conditions, the nexus 6p impressed!
Compared to my HTC M8, which took okay lowlight pictures, the 6P blows it out of the water. And with more detail obviously!

Amazing what the larger pixals do. Took a picture in some pretty low light. And the image processing combined with the larger pixals. Made the picture not only brighter but crisper.
Great camera! Still not quite as good as this year's Samsungs but overall very nice

In low light conditions, I paired it against Oneplus One and LG G2 (with Xcamera). Even though the resulting images came out with pretty much the same brightness level of images, Nexus 6P however produced greater details as compared to other photos from other phones. So I would say camera on Nexus 6p is good.
works very well

low light shots are amazing on this camera. Look at this one I took the other night. You can see so much details, amazing for a smartphone.
Great low light performance, no flash just HDR and captured clouds almost clearer than my eye could! I do like this camera....

This camera is crazy good, it saw more than I could in the dark haha

I also used to have an m8 and I thought that camera took the best low light photos of all time....until this phone. The low light resolution is amazing!
Absolutely LOVE this camera.
overall quality is much better than note5 or iphone 6 in low light condition

Noise clearly visible, even at reduced resolution (the forum automatically resized the JPG file to 3 megapixels). But HDR is pretty good. Also good job on the white balance: getting the bright red light imaged correctly is probably a major challenge for many cameras. Comes out very true-to-life on this shot.

It is so many noises even Mi5 has OIS and f/2.0 and a good sensor in general
Auto is no good for low light, use HHT, always.
Has night mode improved at all with new firmwares?
I dont get the hate for the Mi5 camera, imho its better than most flagships too even in low light(I know it is a flagship but at 1/2 - 1/3 rd the cost of most flagships, its truly amazing)
the aperture is actually lower than stated. i think it is at most f/2.8 or lower. compare to another real f/2 phone in the same environment it will tell.

In terms of darkness or bokeh, cause low-light most likely has to do with shutter speed, maybe Xiaomi put higher iso to combat blur then applies noise reduction.

Assuming the EXIF data doesn't lie, it's indeed f/2.0.
Average.
the auto mode of this phone's camera is not as expected, the shutter speed almost as-if locked at 1/8 on low light (auto mode). but the manual mode tells a whole different story, i really like the manual mode of this phone
This or the Honor 8...?
Can anyone answer a few questions about this phone for me?
1. Would it work properly with T-Mobile?
2. Could I install the Google Camera app and be able to do Photospheres?
3. How does this camera compare to the Honor 8's camera? I know spec-wise, but real world performance?
.....sony camera..... opticalstab.

Samy camera disapointing?

I dont know if other users agree with me but my old Nexus6P was way better on low light conditions. In outdoor situations at a sunny day there is no problem, with most phones but the S8+ has a really good camera but if i try to take a picture when the sun has set and the light is low the software makes the pictures really fuzzy. The faces are washed out (i am aware that the software is trying to reduce the noise) and its not that great at auto mode. I took great low light pictures with the manual mode and this is something missing on the nexus 6p and pixels but if i want to take a quick picture at low light i cant start setting up the manual mode i just want to take a quick photo. So at this point my question is, is there any way to install the google photo apk with the hdr+ mode? I dont really know if something like this would work or if its even possible, but i really miss the hdr+ from the google phone.
I attached some examples.
Photo 1 is S8+ selfie in low light
Photo 2 is N6P selfie in even lower light
Photo 3 is S8+ rear shooter in low light
Photo 4 is N6P rear shooter in lower light
Thank you everyone in advance
I also came from the 6p and gotta admit I was totally amazed with the 6p's camera in both low light and day time shooting. I still have not taken much pictures with my s8 plus yet, so I can't really compare the difference in an night out experience, but hope to soon. From around the house shooting the camera seems good, I want to say slightly better than the 6p in low light. I really like the zero shutter lag of the s8 though, even though I had the ZSL mod on the 6p. Your pictures do look pretty fuzzy and not clear on the s8 though. Probably a dumb question, but it's your camera lens clean?

Switch to manual mode and the playing field changes dramatically.
Never had the 6P but I have the Nexus6 and I must say for a phone going on 3 years old it still has a nice shooter (using an app called Manual Camera).
Semi pro skill set with photography here, never liked auto anything.
Your pictures look exactly like mine and I too am disappointed with the S8+ auto Camera shooting. I am coming from a LG G4 and my pictures were amazing on that camera. I would frame them people were shocked they were from a camera phone. My S8+ does great in bright sunny light, but in side/low lighting conditions the pictures are very washed out/lack detail.
I'm also feeling the same. The auto settings are so shonky, my LG G3 had better auto settings. When there's proper lighting it's crisp as anything, also with the flash. When it's low light like this, mine look exactly the same, it's like they have the skin smoothing on the selfie camera but for everything... Also!!!! I've noticed that there still seems to be a bit of grain / not so sharp even in light. I really do feel like my G3 produced better images. Haven't played with manual but like... I feel like I shouldn't have to. Auto should be banging!
I'd have to agree. My iPhone 7 plus beats this camera when it comes to quickness, ease of use, and consistency. Not too impressed.

as i said earlier the manual mode is better but you cant tell people or friends "wait let me set it up" so i can take 1 picture. the point of the auto mode is to take quick good picture. You are totaly right about the manual mode, ive taken very very good pictures with it but its not fast to set it up, eventualy you will lose the moment

Try taking the SAME shot with both phones. Can't say much looking at totally different shots. I do notice the S8+ tends to overexpose a little bit. So if you were shooting in the dark, it would try to get a brighter exposure resulting in a higher ISO and lower quality images.

Exactly trying to compare totally different pictures taken in different places under different conditions is pointless.
I had a 6P for a long time and it had the best camera of any nexus device by light years but just doesnt compare to the S8 camera.
I had a note 5 at the same time as the 6P and the note 5 camera eas better than the 6P so....

As they aim to replace the traditional point-and-shoot camera, it would be nice to have similar pre-set manual mode settings remembered. Then you could set up your perfect "in the pub with mates" manual settings and switch to it quickly without all the sillybuggers of camera phone manual mode faff.
Edit: As an afterthought, what you could do is utilise an app I use called SyncMe. What this does is automatically copy all new photos from my phone to a specified folder on my NAS every day when I connect to my home network and plug in a charger. You simply set the phone to take RAW, and add a filter to this rule to MOVE (instead of copy) any RAW file extensions so your phone doesn't fill up.
Then, if you ever find yourself wanting a nice photo of a night out but the Jpeg is bad, you can hop onto your network and find the RAW equivalent and get editing.
Use pro mode for low light. The higher the iso, the brighter the picture but will leave your photo more grainy.
The lower the shutter speed, the brighter your photo but will require a steady hand or a tripod, and a still target.
Combine these with some editing.

Noobs help for manual camera

Hi guys I've just come back to the xzp from my note 8 (hate all the bezeless trend) and the pictures on the xzp are quite noisy especially in low light
I've heard that manual mode is the best but I'm a noob when it comes to manual setting in the camera app
What's a good starting point for the settings in manual mode to get me started with better pics in low light
I don't me night time pics just room lighting types lol
Thanks
Anyone have any recommendations
It's easy, lower ISO better quality (but less light). You can compensate the low light by decreasing shutter speed, but then, you have to have a really steady hands, or tripod.
So, in short, to get the best quality, use ISO50 and shutter speed 1s. However, without a tripod, it's really hard to get sharp photo. Sometimes when handheld, you can try shutter speed 1/8s with higher ISO (200 or 400) you will see what is necessary by the brightness in viewfinder.

I think that's just a consequence of Sony's extreme post-processing, along with the the lack of OIS and the longer shutter speeds. When zooming in you'd notice that most detail is wiped out by the post processing even in good lighting conditions. As far as I know this can't be fixed since Sony doesn't give raw files and third party cameras are worse.
If you're using 1s shutter time then it's easy to get a bit of blur from the phone moving if you're holding it by hand but it should definitely has less noise than auto.. Resting it against a surface also helps. I found it better to use the on screen shutter button rather than the physical shutter button to reduce shaking, especially if you're using a case.
But in regards to high noise in room lighting, I find that a bit odd as the pictures I took were pretty clean, at least compared to similar cameras like the OnePlus 3. Maybe you're just noticing it because you came from the Note8, which possibly has the best camera?

It's because of hand shake when taking picture. Bidiminished said one more important thing I forgot, set a self-timer for 3 sec, because it's very easy to introduce slight movement with button press or even on screen touch.
Also, having a mobile tripod is a huge help if you can use it at the moment of taking picture.
Some example, cheap tripod with lenses(lenses are not that useful, but the tripod in this set is good ) for 3,5$ with free shipping.

Low light

At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy S9+'s camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. Well to be fair I own both phones and they both have their strength and weaknesses. I prefer the google pixel 2 PICTURES right now however once GCAM gets ported to the S9 I think the advantage will 100% go to the galaxy. For now the video on the S9 is much better but if your into auto snapshots the pixel 2 still probably beats out in good lighting. Move to low light and of course the S9 just destroys the pixel 2.

Thats just my personal opinion. Also I believe this will change once gcam gets ported to the S9. Its all subjective and really depends on the situation but Id much prefer the S9 camera over the pixel 2 in 95% of the situations because #1 I care more about video and #2 the daytime shots are very similar and almost not noticable however once you get in low light the S9 really flexes its muscle for sure. The dynamic range on the pixel 2 IN PICTURES during the day definately is slightly better HOWEVER when it comes to video the S9 can pull off some pretty impressive dynamic range if you have the right app or if you edit the footage in post. I dont like how contrasty samsungs video is but luckily you can pull out a ton of detail from the shadows in an editing program if you need to.

Finally we have a proof which one is better. Clearly S9+ has better cam than Google Pixel 2!
Pixel 2 eat your heart out. Finally!
THANK YOU from all XDA Members who had any doubt about which of these two phones to buy!!

After having the Pixel 2 XL and now the S9+, I prefer the camera on the S9+, because Pixel 2 XL processes the pics too much and they look unreal. They are just social network ready, but not natural at all, and it usually oversharps and put a lot of drama to the pictures. They look nice at first sight, but just try to zoom a little in details and you will notice the loss in detail and quality. In low light, Pixel is just noise and grain.
Anyway, I leave here a video I really liked and to say this guy made a great job comparing both cameras:

Very helpful video for the undecided ones!
UHD/60 is amazing.
Compared to my Note 8, well there is no comparison.
I'm talking low light. I can take video in a dark passageway and play it back and see more than my eyes can AND it's not a snowy, grainy mess!
That's impressive indeed!

Seriously You can see MORE with S9+ than with your naked eyes? Do You use flashlight when looking at dark areas with S9+?
I'm SHOCKED. This is quite amazing and quite impossible.
Nope, when I look at video taken in a dark room I can make it more details than I can with my own eyes.
My eyes are good in the dark, all I need is a single 3 lumen night light to walk around in a 400 ft^2 room. Just as a security camera night (IR) mode can reveal details, it's far inferior to a brightly lit room. Our eyes work the same way. The image processing is amazing that it can reduce noise reasonably well and preserve color balance. Non of my other devices can do this.

So it's final then, S9+ broke all barriers for smartphone cameras. It's the best in the world. No doubt about it. Iphone X and Pixel 2 can not hold a candle to S9+
Congrats to Samsung!
Well let's put it this way. I have an iPhone X. I use it for work and Apple dev projects. I like it a lot. It's the best iPhone I've owned. And I preferred it over my Note 8 for video based on the fact that it can do UHD at 60fps. It still has issues with AF hunting though. I have not tested the 9+ to see how it fares in that department. In the dark, however, off come the kids gloves. Video is the best I've seen. I also use Filmic Pro and ProCam on the X to get the best out of the hardware. Tough to beat physics with f 1.5. The processing helps too. SEC does need to work on the glare problems, however. And given such a small lens aperture I suppose reflections are just impossible to avoid (inter element reflections). Take video of a bright light on the ceiling or at a concert with multiple points of bright light, you will see.
As for the Pixel phones, my last Google device was the Nexus 6. Loved the dev on that phone but its time has come and gone. Hated the aesthetics of the Pixel series. The N6 had a great camera but horrible software. I don't care for TW but SEC got it right on the camera software out of the box. Ever since the S6E+. I wish they would move back to a 16MP sensor though. Shooting RAW in pro mode yielded some incredible shots that are hard to get today still.
