Hey so I have read a lot of the threads on rooting but I think (hope) mine is a bit original for you. I am one of those skittish goody-two-shoes type people who have a bad record of breaking their electronics. My family is updating their tmobile plan in August and I am planning on getting a lg g2x. It seems like a great phone that'll be able to keep up with the advancements of Android for a while. However I have heard the battery life is really bad (as it is for most androids) and that there are all of these great methods I could use (setCPU, Battery Calibration, etc.) and I can get rid of ads on my apps (adfree) and even use ROMs and Themes!! This sounds great EXCEPT all of the above requires rooting. So my question is, if I install Battery Calibration, setCPU, adfree, etc, while rooted and then just unroot, will they all still work??? Also, in the case that this is possible, if I have any problems with my phone and have to send it in for service, as long as it's unrooted I don't have to delete any of the apps to put it back under warranty do I? And (yes there's more) can I continuously root/unroot as I please in order to change themes and ROMs and even updating the android system once my phone is out of date (though I hope I'm not obsolete within 2 yrs) and no longer gets updates from my phone company? I know superoneclick is supposed to be really easy but as I don't have the phone yet I was wondering how fast it actually is as well.

Hmm....lots of questions young one, well 1st of all by rooting it technically voids the warranty, and yes for the programs to work properly you will need to keep it rooted because some off them actually need root access to tweak the device.

1. If you install the root required apps, root, then unroot, they will stop working. Once an app requires root and your phone is not rooted, even if it was before but it's not now, they will not work.
2. There are many one click root apps. e.g. z4root and universal androot.
3. You will have to unroot and remove the root required apps to put it back under warranty. I say this because if you leave them, then your provider will know that you must have rooted your phone to put them on it in the first place. (It would be like sending an Iphone for servicing to AT&T with Cydia installed. They will know that you jailbroke it.
4 Superoneclick does work fast. It may take up to five minutes (depends on your phone model), but remember what I said in #2. Good luck.
I am debating now if I shouldkeep the root or move to mmarshmallow. How smooth is marshmallow? Battery life? Does Hotspot still work?

My usb port started acting really wonky and after attempting everything I could think of, I decided to try the verizon repair assistant hoping that the 1% chance it would be a software issue. Unrooted, ran the repair assistant and next thing I know, my phone is on marshmallow, the software doesn't repair sh*t, just wipes everything, installs latest rom and then puts files back. Does not return your app data.
Anyway, long story short, my battery seems to drain quicker now, I can't deal with all the ads and I lost years of app data. Stick with root, nothing special with marshmallow.

Shoot, wish that would have been a software issue for you. Still tempted to see how marshmallow runs. My phone seems to be running slow.
I've had root on my phone's since the original Motorola droid days. Now that we haven't been able to unlock bootloader root is almost pointless that we can't install custom kernels, or true Roms. I've had more options being on marshmallow than 0C3 or 0E2. I don't use hotspot so I'm not sure if it still works but I was reading that people have been able to get it going without root. Android and Samsung pay works now that I'm not rooted. Samsung's themes work very well and canake the whole touch whiz experience bearable. All the addware that comes along with not being rooted is easily hidden. People complain about that it's still installed and using space on our phones but for me I haven't noticed them.

Do you know the best way to go back to stock? I've been on 5.0.2 OE2 rooted since the beginning but I'm wanting to move over to Marshmallow stock and get some of those apps back that don't support rooted phones.
So my big question is foxfi working on marshmallow foe the unlimited plan?

All I did was uninstall the apps which required root, then I unrooted through SU and then connected to the verizon upgrade assistant. You can also use the Samsung smart switch. Before I connected to the upgrade assistant and smart switch, but after I unrooted through SU, I rebooted my phone a few times and the custom unlock boot screen also changed to normal.

I've been rooting since the HTC Hero days and I disagree. Although we have lost a lot with the locked bootloader, it's not pointless, root still lets you keep all of your old app data with titanium backup which I personally had stored for years. It's also great for blocking ads, being on day 4 of no root, all these ads are really annoying.
I'd love to be back on OE2!

Works perfectly. I switched from OE2 to MM with no regrets. Get package disabler pro and get rid of all the bloat and it's super smooth with great battery life. The only thing I miss about not having root is I can't use better battery stats anymore. The locked bootloader and complete lack of updated ROMs was a much bigger deal to me.

Download stock firmware from Sammobile and flash with Odin.

The Marshmallow Odin Tar was linked in another thread. You should be able to just flash this and factory reset through the stock recovery and be set. I haven't done this but that's the route I'll be taking when I do decide to upgrade

Yes, best decision I have made marshmallow is faster and smoother, foxfi works, and you can you samsung pay.

Yea, marshmallow works very good on the S6.. smooth, good battery life, looks good...but that freaking swipe screen! I made the jump. Best decision ever. Very polished and no more force close like 5.0.2. Can still tether with foxfi which is what I pretty much only used root for.

I bought an S7 around 2/3 months ago. I'm in the UK meaning that I don't have Samsung Pay and probably wont when it releases (Natwest didn't support the Android Pay launch so they probably won't for the Samsung Pay either so I don't really care if I root.) I'm considering about rooting the device but I have a few questions.
1. What apps and features do i lose access to when the flash counter is triggered?
2. Is there a way to reset the flash counter to get them apps to work again?
3. Is there an app which allows me to change the Ultra Power Saver apps? (I know there was one for the S5 rooted but don't know if it works on the S7 and can't currently try it due to it needing root perms)
4. Would you recommend rooting the device? (I've rooted my Moto G 2nd gen in the past but didn't really use it for all that much though I feel that with an S7 I might be able to do more things by being rooted.)

1. The only thing I think you really lose is Samsung Pay (since I rooted yesterday haven't noticed any other major issues)
2. As of right now there is no option to do this, though I know other devices have recieved the ability through triangle away. Sadly this is not currently available.
3. It doesn't currently look like it, but I think they will probably update the app (looked and the app i found was UPSM+ and it costs money so couldn't actually test)
4. I'm happy I did because I can use apps like sixaxis for using my ds4 controller, and I'm trying out viper audio which I've heard is good)

I always root everything, but this phone almost like a Greek Goddess - beautiful and accommodating. But after about a month I went ahead and rooted it. I am a heavy user of Google chrome and Google music radio stations and the amount of ads they push through their channels is extremely obnoxious. I feel guilty toward Greek Gods now, but I am at peace...

Would you suggest I root the phone? I'm very worried that I will not like the consequences that come with it. I've seen and looked up the issues that it has, and I have also seen that they have been fixed. My main focuses are: Battery Life, performance, texting and calling works, I get a good signal from my carrier.
Do these all work like they should? Do they work as if there isn't even root on the phone?

Being rooted itself shouldn't affect anything you listed. Now certain apps you install that require root may negatively affect battery life, and possibly performance, but texting, calling, and signal shouldn't change. Rooting essentially gives you administrator privileges like on a Windows PC, what you do from there is what will affect you the most.

Well are you using the US variant? There are some problems with the engboot but a lot of users are saying that they are resolved with the fixes they provide. A lot of people are sticking with it because they still feel the pros outweigh the cons. Something to think about if you, yourself, would prefer root over stock.

I am on the US variant. One of the main reasons I'd be rooting is for the game hacks I can get, so those are the biggest pros for me

In that case, as long as you won't miss Samsung Pay then go for it. You can always flash back to stock if you aren't happy with it. Give it a week and see if you get used to it. If not, then there is a thread here that explains how to flash back to stock completely.

if you root and want to restore later on. I Recommend flashing a recovery such as TWRP and create a backup via TWRP. once that's done, bootup device and install SuperSU. Once that's done, open app and let it flash what it need a to flash via TWRP. there should be threads here in XDA for your device. Backups can only be done with a recovery. If this is your first time. READ THE PROCEDURES CAREFULLY. No one is to blame but your self if you screw up your device. Research before acting

Of course, look into FlashFire, it should be able to backup and flash.
You will most likely forfeit your remaining manufacturers warranty.
I run the non-rooted version of the 935f exynos S7e and have superb battery life unlike some that rooted it.
Unless you are particularly adverse to TW or need to play constantly with icons I wouldn't bother. Samsungs stock browser is also very fast.

I don't really care that much about the warranty really, I've owned quite alot of devices in the past and haven't needed to use the warranty's for any of them. My device used to have really good battery life but it just feels that these days the life has gone down quite significantly.
I do like the customization which root permissions gives. I guess I might have to wait until Samsung Pay comes out to see if my bank (Natwest) supports the launch or not. I only want to root for the UPSM app really since most of the root battery saver apps don't work from my past experiences.

I did not notice any adverse effects yet, but I only installed one program requiring root - Adaway. I am sure you know, but by rooting the phone you void your warranty, trip Knox and will not be able to use Samsung and Android pay.
I have a Galaxy S7 that was originally bought on the Cricket network (SM-G930AZ), but is now on the MetroPCS network. I was wondering if it was worth it to update my phone to Nougat? Also, is it possible yet to root this version? Which should I do first? Can someone give me links to tutorials if this is possible. I do know that I don't want to lose the fingerprint capability or the ability to use Samsung Pay, which I saw on a few forums was a downside to rooting. Has a workaround been found for this yet? I mostly want to root in order to delete bloatware and install Xposed to customize my phone. Also, being able to use Titanium Backup again would be amazing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I was asking myself this exact same question.. so I tried both to see what each had to offer. Originally I rooted my phone running on Marshmallow and although it was really cool being able to run Xposed modules, change emjojis to iPhone style, and get rid of ads, the overall conclusion I came to was to not root and here's why:
- Phone was overheating while charging my phone and even running the simplest apps. Tried downloading some cooling apps to help and none were able to truly fix the problem.
- Battery was draining extremely fast. Tried downloading the top battery saving apps with root access, Greenify specifically, and none were able to really fix the issue completely.
- Major lag issues. Scrolling through the phone, opening apps, and specifically running snapchat, everything was pretty much in slow motion. Once again tried downloading apps to help with RAM management and other lag issues. None helped.
I finally came to the conclusion to just update to Nougat, which in itself was a pain since I had to manually update due to losing my OTA access. Overall I like stock Nougat more than Marshmallow but am still in the process of potentially finding a root that will run better on Nougat than it did on MM.

Hi all i own a Tab s 8.4 LTE for a good year or so i did not trip Knox due to warranty and stuff.. But a month or so ago i found out about Viper4Audio so me flashing Twrp to install viper4audio tripped knox, yeah i know i could have not tripped knox.. if i installed viper4audio apk but the dam thing wouldnt work until i flashed it. Anyway once i heard viper audio wow im blown away now when ever i listen to the S8+ the audio does not sound as good as the tab s. So im wondering is it worth rooting ? the ones who have rooted do you regret rooting ? or shall i wait will root ever come for the S8+ EXYNOS With out tripping knox or am i dreaming for that ?
There will never be a way to root without tripping Knox I'm afraid.
You just have to decide if it's worth it for YOU.
You will lose warranty. You will lose things like Samsung Pay, Samsung Health, other banking apps, though sometimes this can be worked around.
I owned the S7E before owning the S8+, and it was the first time I have ever owned a phone that I didn't root it. It's a hard choice, but warranty is more important for me, along with Samsung Pay, Samsung health etc.
Just root. Life is bet with root.

I chose to not root my S7 edge, and the only thing that bothers me is video ads on youtube. otherwise I can live just fine without it. Custom roms tend to be too unstable for me, anyway. I won't root my S8+, assuming it ever comes out for the SD variant (bought it for dolphin, and I got it from Samsung for $524).

I don't recommend you to root your phone you will loose Samsung pay feature for good plus your warranty. I can tell you yes it's a bit boring without having the ability to modify your phone but you can live without it. I think the stock rom is quite good and satisfies my needs . So again don't do it

No root for me. Root is history for me since two years ago.
Don't see the needs of it already. Maybe they is still one or two nice apps that need root. For the sack of that one or two apps really not worth to root and trip Knox.
I root for years any single device I have but yesterday I bought also a S8+ and I think this will be the first time not to root. So no root - vote from me
Same rooted my s7 edge just to play and get more out of it. I will leave my new s8+ Alone. Battery is great would love the customizations with root but its good enough as it is. Only thing i really miss is viperaudio. Anyone know of a way this can be installed without tripping knox??

I guess I can use some adblocked browser (any suggestion?), but I do not how to backup and restore the apps.. Any idea how to resolve it?

First phone since the T-Mobile G1 I haven't rooted and I've had 12 smartphones since. There's nothing as good as Adblock but I'm not rooting the S8+ and am using Blokada from XDA.

I'm joining the growing choir of new S8 Plus users who have decided to leave rooting behind them. It was fun and extremely useful for me up until this S8 Plus. My Note 5 will be the last device I root. It's just not worth the hassle any longer. Lately rooting has become too much of a chore on this platform for me, personally. I've kept Samsung as my daily driver for years because one of the reasons was that traditionally it was much easier to root compared to other devices. This was especially true when I was with Sprint as they never locked down their phones like Verizon and AT&T did.
At this moment, as far as rooting is concerned, I have the same feeling I did when I finally said, "Enough!" when I was jailbreaking my iPhones. Eventually I grew tired of the cat and mouse game between devs and the OEM. This feels the same and I think it's time to say goodbye to rooting flagships for me.
Now I feel that the combined hardware and software development on this phone has matured enough that I'm okay rolling clean and stock from now on.

I have youtube red, no ads anyway, so I'm not sure.
I have been rooting since the beginning of Android, every phone I've had. I stopped using Samsung in 2013 and went to LG, then to Google (Nexus 6P, then Pixel XL), and now back to Samsung. I was honestly a little disappointed with the Pixel and how difficult it was to flash because of the dual partitions. I am in the US, and the US S8 was a no go, as I don't appreciate a phone that I buy outright being locked down. I ended up getting the SM-G955F, and rooted it the first day I had it. It was so simple, and so worth it. I feel like its 2013 again with how easy this thing is to modify. I have Viper installed, and customized to my liking, and my ROM is bloat free.
I have a Canadian S8 Plus and I've rooted all my Androids since the first Motorola. Like others I don't think at this moment rooting would bring me anything really exciting. I've installed Adhell 2 and got rid of the ads and backed up everything with the pc smart switch. I'm missing the volume warning disable mod because I found it annoying but even that one is not that bad if I don't restart the phone. Starting with S6 the best ROMs were always stock based and that became more and more evident lately so until something really new is coming up I'm going to stay unrooted. I'm with Bell and there are only 2 apps which I would not want them so basically no bloat. My 2c.

You can get rid of ads with AdGuard.
I am hesitating to root also.
I used Titanium backup until now and if someone has an alternative I would be glad to hear it too.
Did you try Helium? The paid version has many features but it will only backup some apps vs Titanium. Because of missing root it will not be able to backup apps that have "backup disallowed" enabled.
