So I have been creaming over this phone for an entire month. But after reading again and again, i decided against it. I am seriously considering tmobile's, Here is why .
I am ordering the phone full price from verizon so i can keep my unlimited . I Tether all the time and my lowest data usage has been around 6 gb, i can go up to 60 sometimes in a month.
right now I own the S3, its of course unlocked and rooted with custom everything.
1- The fact that now KNOX is coming to the picture and the uncertainty of the rooting future scares the crap out of me. WIthout rooting, i cant tether, so i am buying a full price phone to keep an unlimited that i will not use to its full potential as I wish. ( this is not a moral thread, please refrain from giving me life lessons ). I also hate ads with a passion, gotta run ad blocker, and i cant imagine living life without XPOSED. ROOT IS A MUST.
2- Tmobile phones come unlocked, I am btw only referring to bootloader, which i care deeply for, I dont travel internationally , so sim unlocked is not an issue I care for, from the very first day, I need to verify it , but if thats the case, then i will finally feel like I own my phone that I bought .
3- with an extra 10 dollar month, i get to change my phone every 6 months. AND THIS AMOUNT INCLUDES INSURANCE FOR MY PHONE .
4- T mobile is a heck of a lot cheaper , unlimited every thing costs a fraction of verizon.
5- I will beat my self with an ugly stick , if they release a verizon developer edition in the future. I'll wait a month or two ( its killing me inside ) to see the developer status, if they release it , i might contemplate ordering it from samsung , but it will fix 99 % of my disappointments.
6 -Unless the dev. community unlocks the phone , at least root it , verizon note 3 is just a loser deal in every single way. so once again its wise for me wait .
7- the wifi calling feature , i feel would make up for tmobiles lack of great coverage .
I think i have to stop behaving like a kid and have some patience to see the root and developer status with verizon note 3
Back in the day , it was all about service reliability for me. But now my phone is more than just for phone calls. Its my tablet, laptop, navigator and actually , very lil for direct phone calls. Is verizons service really worth paying outright $ 700 for a phone , that i cant use the way i like ?
The point of this thread - insight , some members here have done a fantastic job pointing out things that would not have foreseen on my own. Thanks to all in advance !
I'm switching to Tmobile also but from AT&T pretty much for the same reasons you mentioned. Even in paying for Jump, my plan is still cheaper with Tmobile then the same plan is for AT&T.

Considering T-Mobile as well because I'm on Sprint and you know how their data and network is... :silly:'
Also Sprint had the smart decision of making the Note 3 single band LTE . They are the only carrier in US with single band LTE Note 3 while their network has tri-band LTE. T-mobile has like quad-band LTE support along with the others. I'm also on a Sprint Sero Premium plan which makes switching difficult as I'll be paying more through T-mobile but I think it will be worth it for the better overall network experience. I may just keep my Sprint and use T-Mobile $30 plan with the Note 3 for a month to see how it goes.
I left Verizon over a year ago, went to Sprint (big mistake) and had the Note II now I'm on T-Mobile with a Nexus 4 waiting for my pre-ordered Note III to ship.
I have ZERO issues with T-Mobile and I'm so glad to be away from Verizon's politics. I mean when the Galaxy S III came out they were the only carrier in the world to lock the bootloader.
If T-Mobile's coverage is good in your area I would say make the jump!
Doesn't T-Mobile throttle your data though? What good is unlimited data if it gets throttled after 2GB?
I am on Verizon's unlimited data as well. What I do when I want to tether is I switch my SIM card from my Crapple iPhone 5 to my wife's Crapple jail broken iPhone 5 and tether away.
Yes, it's a major hassle, but hopefully the Note 3 gets rooted. I don't think KNOX has any effect on the bootloader being unlockable.
And it's way better than being on a carrier that throttles LTE.

T-Mobile has unlimited data, but they have several different amounts of "HighSpeed" you can select from. They have 500mb, 2.5gb and unlimited.
If you choose lets say the 2.5gb plan then yes once you go over the 2.5gb you get throttled but if you choose the unlimited then you do not get throttled.
No throttling

Their unlimited 4g plan has no throttling and 2.5 gb personal hot spot included. with their edge and unlimited text and talk and not paying the price phone in full its 94 per month. if i pay every thing out right ( which is what i am planning ) becomes 80 a month.
I also wanna add another reason, Jump from t-mobile: the $10 jump fee, includes insurance for the phone and the upgrade every 6 months !
thats not the verizon edition

verizon's edition , from what I hear will be bootloader locked. What scares me is that HTC one has not been rooted till now ! Also , S4 bootloader is still locked, although they do have root. However, this is pre-knox days .
I am leaving Verizon mid Oct, when my contract ends. There is no reason for me to stay as they have made it clear they don't want my business. Been a long time.
We all do not know whether T-Mobile version has unlocked bootloader or not.
However, if you pay in full in the first place, you can receive unlocked code after the trial period is over.
If you have Nationwide 4G, phone only data is 100% (or 99.9999999999%) unlimited and you have 2.5GB hotspot sharing included, but according to my experience, I don't see throttling on sharing part yet (your mileage may vary however because I am a 10 years customer).
Make sure you get HSPA and/or LTE wherever you are.
I think tmobile may throttle you after 5gb on the unlimited plan but in not sure. Thats fine with me though.

If you have Nationwide 4G data as I have ($20 with Value/Simple plan), your data is unlimited with phone (get old version of My Account - a guy holding a phone) and it shows 9.xxxGB.

T-Mobile has no history of locking bootloaders so I would put my money on that the bootloader will not be locked. Even more so now that they don't have contracts and your buying your phone outright.

waw this rocks
Well i am really grateful for all the constructive additions to this thread. Thanks to each and every one of you. I think I am going to preorder the tmobile edition tomorrow, and i just found out that they give 20 days trial period instead of verizon's 14 days. So i can really play with the reception and see how they stack up against my s3 with verizon.
I'm on Verizon right now but I preordered the T-Mobile Note 3. I've never had T-Mobile before but I'm willing to try them out. Their coverage map looks good in my state but coverage maps can be deceiving. I'm definitely gonna be driving around and checking things out for the first 14 days. I hope all goes well because I don't want to stay on Verizon and I'd rather things go well with T-Mobile than to go to AT&T.
So wait a minute.
Say I have the $80 everything unlimited plan on TMobile.
That includes 2.5GB of hotspot tether.
What if I use a third party app or a custom ROM that hides the hotspot use? Can T-Mobile still catch that and spank me?
Reason I ask is because I live in an RV for part of the year so I don't have access to cable internet. LTE is my only source of internet.
I tether about 80 to 100 GB per month on average. How would that work on T-Mobile?

Hmm, the more I think about it, the more intrigued I am.
If am able to use an app to hide tethering, I think I might make the jump!
Im switching to tmobile from sprint
I am on the Sprint Network and will stay with them for a variety of reasons. I have always had a contract with them and upgraded whenever that opportunity presented itself. I am no longer on a contract and I'm considering a few options. The Note 3 (probably won't go that way due to problems on voice calls), The LG G2 or the Nexus 5. Advantage of the Nexus 5 is that it is off contract but if I am staying with Sprint anyway what advantage is there to being off contract? Sprint won't discount my monthly bill as far as I know so the off contract advantage has me a bit puzzled from the purely dollars and cents point of view. I'd be happy to hear views from others as to why this seems like a good idea. I'm leaning toward the LG G2 which will likely have a better camera and battery than the Nexus 5 and it's only $99 at Sprint with the 2 year contract. I'd go for the Nexus 5 at 399 for the 32GB model if it meant something off my monthly bill but I don't see Sprint giving me a discount just because I bought the Nexus 5 off contract. What am I missing?
I am in the exact same situation as you, except I bought a Note 3 and just returned it. If the Sprint Nexus 5 is available through google play, you buy that, use your upgrade towards an iphone 5s and sell it sealed. If the Nexus 5 winds up being only available through Sprint, then I'm not so sure what I'm going to do.
You can change your mind and leave whenever you want. And with the nexus you will be able to go to any carrier you want (except Verizon).
All in all, it gives you more options on what service provider you want. I would recommend seeing what offers the best service (data and calls) and pick that carrier or see if you can go prepaid. I know straight talk offers at&t and T-Mobile Sim cards and its like $51 a month after taxes for unlimited everything with 2.5 GB uncapped data.

Yes, I totally agree that there are A LOT of options. I've even thought about picking up Tmo @ $30/month, but I'm on Sero, only pay $50/month for unlimited everything, and my Sprint service has been fantastic since relocating to Orlando, FL. Oh decisions decisions

Trying to weigh my options as well.
My 2 year contract expired many months ago. I can buy the 16g Nexus 5 for $150 if I sign a new 2 year agreement, I can change to the Sprint One Up plan so I can be eligible for a new phone once a year (not sure pricing details), or I can buy through the Google Playstore for $350/$400. I have so many family members tied to the plan I am on I probably wouldn't switch carriers.
So if I bought through Google and in a year's time I wanted to switch phones I guess I could sell the Nexus 5 then use my upgrade to buy whatever phone I wanted. If I buy through Sprint, the upfront cost is cheaper, but I will have to wait a couple years if I want to switch phones.
Decisions, what do ya'll think?
For someone off-contract but that wants to stick with their post-paid account, the only advantage is flexibility. If coverage or financial conditions changed, you have the choice to be able to switch providers with no termination fees.
The only real exception to that would be the newer T-Mobile post-paid accounts where they do offer plans with lower base costs per month because they split off the phone subsidy, so if you bring your own phone you pay less since you aren't using a subsidy.
If you have a high degree of confidence you will be staying with your current contract provider and that other things like your financial situation will remain stable, I would say it makes more sense to just re-up with them and choose whatever phone you want from them. As far as which one, read some reviews and then try them out in-person at your local provider's store. Everyone has slightly different things they want out of phones, so without specific criteria it would be hard to say whether a Nexus 5 would still be the best phone for you.
I agree with you, flexibility is the main advantage of staying off contract. I've had an S3 for the last couple of years and am getting the itch to switch. If the HTC One came out today I would probably get that because I love the looks and build of it and I liked my original Evo, but it's so "old" now I want something newer - LG G2, Nexus 5 or some other upcoming phone.

It always amazes me how people would rather be in a contract that will require them to pay between $1-2,000 more over two years, instead of buying a phone outright and upfront, and save the money. Unless someone is too broke to afford a phone upfront... Of course if you can't afford a phone upfront, you likely can't afford a $100 monthly cell phone bill either.

Sure, but for people who only pay $50/month for essentially unlimited everything ( 1000 landline minutes, unlimited mobile minutes, texts, and data), subsidizing phones works in our favor.
We've been w/Sprint forever and have numerous phones on the account. I'm one of the ones who pays $50 for unlimited. I'm assuming I would continue to pay $50/month whether I bought a phone outright or through contract. I doubt if I bought a phone off contract my bill would be lower than $50/month.

why wouldn't it work? its the same phone.

Yep. It's kind of ironic that so many folks buying a google phone can't figure out how to use google search.
There needs to be a big huge freakin' banner ad or something on the Nexus subforums that says "ALL NEXUS DEVICES ARE UNLOCKED FROM THE FACTORY - YOU CAN USE THEM WITH ANY CARRIER REGARDLESS OF WHO YOU BUY IT FROM" basically.
Yes, we know Sprint is a CDMA-based carrier like Verizon, but the Nexus 5 for Sprint is still the same phone because the Nexus 5 supports GSM/CDMA/LTE out of the box.
The simple answer to the OP's question is "Yes, if you buy the Sprint version free and clear (since you'd be crazy to but it for Sprint use then start using it with AT&T and still have to pay the Sprint service costs) you can then use it with AT&T or most anybody else (except Verizon it seems)."
That's why the free and clear price for the Sprint model is $449 - that works out to $149 for the phone subsidized by Sprint so if you buy it then cancel, they hit you with the $300 ETF (early termination fee) which ends up with you paying that $449 anyway 'cause $300+$149=$449.
See how that works?
Hello,
I will be moving to the US next Thrusday and I still can't understand some thing regarding plans.
I just bought a Nexus 5 here it Italy.
Now my question is:
My relatives have family plans with a 2 year contract with a phone which is going to end in december.
I was wondering if they could do another family plan with 3 sim cards (2 phones, 3 sims) so that I can get the advantage of the discount being in the family plan but without purchasing a new phone..
Is it possible?
If yes is it limited to some companies or you can actually do it with any carrier?
Thanks
Your relatives should be able to add a 3rd line to their plan pretty easily.... most carriers allow it.
The kicker is going to be if your Nexus 5 from overseas will play nice with American cell service.
Do you know what carrier your relatives use? I know Verizon will not accept the Nexus 5 due to their policies.

They have AT&T,
but then I'm planning to suggest them to get T-Mobile unlimited text data and calls family plan for 3 which is really cheap!
If they go to T-moblie you shouldn't have too many issues... T-Mo's service is GSM like overseas and the phone should be fine on their towers.
Good Luck!
Any help or advice would be appreciated. I have had a down right terrible experience with Sprint and my Note 5 upgrade & contract renewal. From misinformation about the phone’s capabilities, faulty billing plus hidden fees (there is a class action law suit for this as well), terrible customer service over the 800 number and in store, missing a ton of incoming calls and losing out on business and social opportunities, and poor internet/data reception. I have had enough and refuse to pay over $100 (plus the $200 down payment) a month for this type of service after being a loyal customer for 12 years.
I am under a 2 year lease contract. I do not feel like forfeiting my $200 deposit and the lease fee payments I have been paying for several months if Sprint chooses not to let me out of my contract.
-My phone is stock and I do not wish to root it per say as of yet.
-Is it possible to pay a service to Unlock a Sprint Note 5 while it’s still under a lease contract and take it to Metro PCS with my same phone number????????
-If this is possible would I now have the ability to talk and surf on this Note 5 on the Metro PCS/ T mobile network?????
Thanks
No metro pcs is a GSM carrier now and even unlocking sprint note 5 it will only allow to use a international sim
I also have a question..i have a sprint note 5 unlocked using att. But are there any roms i can use that are good for unlocked phones. Basically unbranded

This is exactly what I did, note 5 Sprint paid to get it unlocked. Signed up for metro in the store. You should get a free phone and sim. Call metro directly from there 888 number should be someone in India you talk to. Ask them to add your IMEI. Give them IMEI from note 5. Pop your sim in and might have to play with lte/cdma auto in mobile network settings. But I am getting LTE AND able to make phone calls. I used www.idoneapps.com to unlock it, it is legit. If your running android nougat you might have to root your phone. You dont have to send your phone in and you dont need a computer unless you need to root your phone. There website offers a downloadable android app. That will check to see if your device can be inlocked. You pay than the app will download some files to the root of your sdcard. You hit unlock device will reboot once if not rooted twice if your rooted. You will need a gsm sim to test if working. If you have multiple devices you would like to use and only have 1 sim you have to call Metro each time you want to switch phones and give them your IMEI information.
