Google Play Services Battery Drain - Sony Xperia XZ Questions & Answers

Back to this crap again with Play Services, anyone else notice a high drain on their XZ?

ya i'm! And root can be the saviour

Looks like it. On my XZ it was working fine before however after a month or two, battery usage often says Google Services is using ~ 45%. Did you find a solution yourself? Would you share?

Have you turned off the WiFi and Bluetooth always scanning for a connection in the background for google even if they are both turned off in the main settings.
Go to settings location tap the three dots top right and then turn both sliders to the off position.

How to tell what app is using GPS?

I often see the GPS satellite symbol showing activity like some app is using my GPS when I dont have a GPS or navigation related app open. How can I tell what active process is using GPS at a given moment?
Thanks

Because I want GPS to be ready when I do open a nav app. And I am curious if there's a way to tell what is using it.
Go to menu-system apps-running...
List all you have running when you see that gps symbol. My guess is that you may be signed into google latitude.
If it is latitude, go to google maps, settings, and somewhere in there is an option to sign out of latitude.
Its not latitude. Google sets GPS to sleep when apps are running in the background. Third party developers aren't as good as Google.
Anyone have a real answer and not a guess?
Searched very long for a solution and it was quite hard to find the solution working without root, so I'll post it here:
Get the app "GSAM Battery Monitor" from Google Play, on GSAM's start screen select "Application Usage",
then on top of the screen select to view the used GPS time.
Well, this doesn't show which app is using GPS right now but you can see how much time each app actually activated GPS since the last battery charge, so this is very helpful to determine the apps using GPS in the background.
Hi
Even if your gps is turned on, it dosen't necessarily means that gps is being used. Use Spare Parts app from play store and it'll show you what all apps used gps since you last plugged in your phone charger. And yes, don't use this app while your phone is being charged...otherwise the readings gets resetted.
Also, the android os uses gps continually, like the camera app, gallery app etc.

[Q] battery drain in standby, and Google play service problem

so I decided to charge my phone fully then leave it alone for 12 hours to see the standby drain, and This morning when I took a look and I was pretty disappointed. I attached pics, but as you can see, 12 hours of standby and 30 percent of my battery is gone. wtf? another time I did this a week ago with only 8 hours of standby, it drained 20 percent, which if scaled to 12 hours will become 30 percent. Why is the drain so high? Google play services is at the top of the list, and even with normal use it takes about 10 plus percent of my battery. my friends nexus 4, with basically the same apps I have (fb, messenger, Chrome, snapchat, bbm, etc) only had 10 percent after 12 hours. both our phones have the battery saving location enabled, radios on, but the only difference is that he wasn't connected to WiFi and I was. any suggestions? And yes I've looked around on the Internet at other people having the same problem and I still haven't found a fix
Lol sorry I forgot to add the pics in the first post
It's the WiFi. I had the really bad battery drain issue while connected to WiFi after the 4.4.2 update. I lost about 30% of charge after 4ish hours while connected. Currently I'm at 92% after 3 hours.
Try disconnecting from WiFi and redoing your test!

I haven't used WiFi at all today, my phone had been unplugged since 6 am and at 1pm today it's down to 57 percent. I have hardly used my phone today and the play services are killing it.
I think WiFi was my issue actually, I have kept it off all day and after 2.5ish hours I'm down to 72 percent battery, with an hour of screen on and using Google search quite a bit. the screenshot has screen and Google search at the top, Google play services hasn't been up in double digits at all

On your first screenshot Google play services consumed 34% out of 30% of your total battery loss, which is approx. 10% of your full charge. Within 12 hours this would be a 0.85% battery drain per hour because of gp services.
I did the math again for the second screenshot and Googe Play services consumed 0.7% per hour.
Doesn't feel like a big difference for me. If the time was actually less than 2.5 hours the drain could be equal.

Google Now will still function. It just will not show cards based on location. Also when you disable or semi disable location sometimes Search start's keeping you're phone awake trying to find some location information. If this happens just force stop Google search or reboot the phone.

Weather will still work you just need to input you're location into the card settings manually. I used that for a while but it consistently wakes the phone to update it which annoyed me so I use Dashclock as it only updates when I turn the screen on.
Without Locations it will still grab information from the net about your searches, sports teams, stocks etc. It will no longer show you commutes, local picture spots etc.
I've kept Google Now on mainly so I can still set and receive reminders but don't want to tolerate any unnecessary wakes when the screen is off and have accomplished that now.

Not necessary to go that extreme.
I had the same issue as you guys after upgrading. Goto Settings->App->All
Select Google play services. Stop it. And clean data (All, including cache)
Reboot. And voila, it will consume much much less battery (Dont ask me why... Probably some conflict arising on the data file after upgrade)
On a side note, without completely disabling data location, it is worth switching to the battery friendly mode (Location will be evaluated using the network and not the GPS)

I wasn't going to disable it, I was just wondering what would happen if I did
also here are my stats from today, what is android system and android os? why are they draining so much battery? also why is Swype using so much battery?
Researched this a lot, found some solutions, bad and good fixes and after trying some different twists on it after two days this is what I found to be the best, and I decided since this is just as bad as 4.0/4.1 and the mediaserver battery drain I might as well try and help at least 1 person by mass posting this reply I wrote else where to other threads, so here you go:
"Hey- I don't know if you, or anyone else has found a working solution, but here is the way I found best:
Note- I am on galaxy s4 [sgh-i337] running a 4.4 KitKat rom. I have found the following work around to work best for me:
1 Google now & Hotword detection=OFF,
2 GPS = OFF and turned on only when needed, eg maps/checkin on facebook/whatever needs location.
3 Settings-> Manage Apps -> Google Play Services -> Manage Space -> Clear All Data.
**Optional:After this [root only] I go into KT tweaker and make sure my phone cpu is set to a max of 810 Mhz when screen off.**
This fix usually works until I reset the phone. I ALWAYS follow those 3 steps when rebooting. AND always check that after I've used GPS that Google Play Services isn't keeping my phone awake. [Eg, after 30 minutes I check if the phone ever went to sleep again when the screen was off.] IF it does act up, I repeat steps 1, 2 &3. I still get notifications and all, and this is the least feature disabling way I've found that works with the cost of a little micro-management of your phone.
With this fix I can idle for an estimated 5-6days. As I take off my phone from charge at 8am and at noon with minimal usage [maybe 4 or 5 texts] I am at 97%. With WiFi on & connected.
OTHER: I personally keep NFC&Android beam&Bluetooth OFF, and turn ON when I need it on. Other- WiFi is always ON, and "Scanning Always Available" EDIT: Now is OFF, "WiFi Optimization" is checked ON for me. And for location mode when I do have it on, I keep it at EDIT: Device only. Using only gps to find my location.
All in all, I hope this gets fixed."
I can post screen shots and all if somebody wants them or if there is need for one

No need to list all your apps when you know Google+ is the culprit
There is an option within settings to sync photos over Wi-Fi only and while on charge, much more efficient unless you really need to backup all the time
Additionally for general gains, you could use another app to turn off data/Wi-Fi or toggle airplane mode overnight, unless you need it syncing while you sleep

Google+ isn't syncing photos because all of my photos are synced.
It was probably syncing something overnight though right? Worth having charging setting anyway
Ironic that an official Google app will have
e such a high wakelock...
Perhaps try something like greenify?

Best hope: Install a wake-lock detector. Check for app.

Google+ will sometimes cause small wakelocks on my phone overnight as well. Although, it doesn't appear as bad as yours. If it doesn't "sync" overnight, I only lose 1-2% that night. If it does sync, it shows that it kept the phone awake for about 10min. But even then, I'll only lose about 5-7% that night (definitely not 33%). I, too, have it back up my pictures over WiFi. This wakelock is random. Sometimes it happens during the day, and sometimes at night. I doesn't really seem to correlate with me taking pictures that day or not.

It's only draining when you're at a home screen so while it's not consistent it will decrease SoT slightly. It only saves you from making 1 screen tap on the mic icon so the trade off is questionable.

Update 4.4.3 Massive Battery Drain

Hey all!
Has anyone else been experiencing a much higher battery drain with 4.4.3? It's not only me but a bunch of friends and family with the M8 have been experiencing drains when by the end of the day they would have 50% but now it's getting down to 10% or even lower. For me, it will sit on my desk during class and drain a minimum of 15%. Classes are about an hour and a half.
Any tips? It's getting really hard to keep the phone plugged in.
Install Better Battery Stats app (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809) . Let it run for a day and see what's killing your battery. I have a feeling its services within Google Play services. I used "Disable Services" app and "Autorun Manager" app to stops alot of play services from sucking my battery.
I wouldn't say I'm getting significant battery drain going from 1.8 viper Rom 4.4.2 to 2.5 viper 4.4.3 w/ firmware but it is noticeable. Also DS battery saver is good, especially if your in low 4g areas all the time

You seen that google play is killing your battery using the wake lock app? Just wondering or what were you using to see this?
suggestion
After any OTA or official update, its a most perform a factory reset* from Stock recovery.
Follow these steps
So Google Play Serveries suck most of our battery up. I use two apps to stop certain Google play receives from running. From installing the app "Better Battery Stats" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809) you are able to see what wakelocks are draining your phone (Both kernel and partial wakelocks). First app to install is "Disable services." In this app go to Google Play services and disable (some of these are default disabled):
- AnalyticsServices
- GcmServices
- SyncService
- PlayLogBrokerservice
- PackageBroadcastService
- InitialzeInternetService
- UserPresence
- GeofenceProviderService
Now install the app "Autorun Manager." Click on "Advance Mode." Go into settings and make sure "Show system entries" is unchecked. In the advance mode scroll down to "Google Play Services" and disable (some of these are default disabled):
- .gms.update.SystemUpdateService$Reciever
- ..gms.checkin.EventLogService$Reciever
- .gms.CheckinService$TriggerReciever
- .gms.update.SystemUpdateService$Activereciever
- .gms.mdm.recieiver.ActivateDeviceAdminUponUnlockreciever
- .gms.checkin.CheckinService$Reciever
- .gms.icing.service.PowerConnectedReciever
- .gms.mdm.recievers.ConnectivityReciever
- .gms.update.SystemUpdateService$SecretCodeReciever
- .gms.feedback.feedbackConnectivityReciever
-.gms.wallet.reciever.ConnectivityChangeBroadcastReciever
- .gms.checkin.CheckinService$ActiveReciever
- .gms.wallet,reciever.PackageAddedBroadcastReciever
- .gms.googlehelp.service.ConnectivityBroadcastReciever
- .gms.mdm.recievers.LockscreenUnlockedReciever
- .gms.mdm.recievers.AccountsChangedReciever
- .gms.checkin.checkinService$SecretCodeReciever
-. gms.app.receiver.OneTimeInitializerReciever
From doing this...I have 1% drain from all of Google Play Services. When Google Play services updates from time to time, you might have to go back and disable these receivers. On this phone, I am able to get 6 hours of screen time. This is on about 30% 4G and 70% Wifi on a daily basis. Took me some trial and error to disable these services. My setup makes nothing FC at all! Hope this helps. You will yield amazing battery life!

Anyone has battery draining issue?

Bought the XZs for almost one month. The battery performance seems not as good as expected. It seems even worser than my old phone, LG G2. I tried to change a new XZs and the same problem exists.
Phone Idle always take around 20% of the battery use. Stamina mode is one and 2-3% is gone even the phone is not in use. The same issue even happened in safe mode. And fast charge is not fast at all...
Googled some posts and found that some people, XZ users, experienced the same issue. I have tried uninstalled Facebook and Messenger. Seems not help.
Just downloaded betterbatterystat, I hope can find some cues there later. But if anyone can advice why
You installed betterbatterystats? That requires root right? Which isn't available yet I believe... Guess we'll have to wait for root to investigate this
Seems like this is Android 7.1.1 Nougat's problem.. Is it the Android OS percentage is very high in the battery usage list? Many Nexus devices also having this problem.. My XZs can only get nearly 3 and half hrs of SOT omg, seems like the doze is not working well, saw massive of wakelocks during screen off..

nougat's problem...but seems not seeing people raised this problem in the internet , so i am still not sure if it is my own problem or not..:silly:
my top 4 usages:
screen 20% (screen opened 1hr 35min)
phone idle 16%
chrome 9%
android os 9%
the battery power dropped around 30% after 12 hours and i might just used the phone for around 1.5 hrs only.

As u can see the image I attached below, the phone is constantly waking up during screen off. It means the doze is not doing its job. Gg Nougat, my SOT hardly go over 3 and half hrs..

I don't think there's a recovery for keyaki, but maybe you can flash xz recovery, it's the same hardware.
But I'm not sure at all so prepare ftf to repair
Hey guys, after some researches and testings, seems like my XZs is having good battery life now. What I did was go to Chrome > Settings > Site Settings > turn off the Background Sync option. Now my latest full charge gives me 2hrs 43mins SOT with 49% battery left, with 1 hr gaming. Hope this helps, good luck everyone

but disable a lot of the services looks like the smartphone not that smart at all
I've been using Xperia XZs HK version for about 2 weeks.
I use an app call "Brevent" to keep background apps in standby mode when they're not active.
I think there're also some issue with Doze mode on Xperia phones, it drains battery more than I thought......
Then I found an app call "Force Doze" to force it go straight in Doze mode while I shut the screen off.
Now it only cause 1% per hour while I shut the screen off and leave WiFi or LTE on.
Or 1% per six hour while I shut screen off and keep the phone in Airplane Mode(very useful at night).
By the way, both "Brevent" and "Force Doze" does not require ROOT, but they need adb for authorizing their activities.

No, it doesn't.
Brevent only kills process and prevent them from running in background while you have already swiped the app from "recent apps". It does not affect background activities of apps which are currently in "recent apps".
For those apps which requires sync service (for example, "Gmail"), you can set them to "allow sync" in Brevent.
Then these apps would be allow to sync in background periodically, instead of allowing them all the time.

cool, it really helps a lot during screen off! it just took 1 % when i wake up.
I do not have the Problem. All sync enabled, Bluetooth on, really much apps installed. At end of day 37% remaining. Its impressive. 41.2.A.0.219.

I also have the same issues and the charging being terribly slow there also isnt any double tap to wake screen so i cant turn on the screen to look at the time comfortably without unlocking the phone
Seems like the doze is not working well
