This topic has been beaten to death. As such, there are too many posts about it for me to learn anything useful. I do NOT use the Facebook app on my Android. I access FB via Firefox, just like my computer, and it works perfectly. However...where before I had a Droid 4, now I have a Galaxy S7. And it's trying to force me to install FB Messenger, which I refuse to do. And yet...on my old Droid 4, it continues to work and is NOT trying to force me to install it.
I'm posting this message because today I discovered something. I downloaded the current version of Opera to my S7, and it's NOT trying to force me to install FBM.
This has me wondering why (and how) Android Browser, Chrome, and Firefox are all doing this..? Can this behavior be prevented..? There are so many ads on this gd thing that I wonder if Sprint and Samsung are in bed with FB and put some proxy or other crap on it to do this. Thoughts..?
Thanks.

I personally use an app called "Metal" which basically gives you the facebook internet version, it doesn't force you to install anything and saves a lot of battery. It can also be used for twitter.
Is your phone rooted? With a rooted phone I have no problem using either Messenger or Facebook. I keep them shut off with Greenify. But it all depends on how you've got your phone set up.

Hi,
I'm sorry if this is a bit late, but was wondering:
Last night (US EST), I began getting a popup asking to log into "adv.netshelter.net" "Staging", whenever I accessed this site (xda).
I had just installed the Firefox/fennec beta, so I thought that that might be causing it.
But, even after I uninstalled Firefox, and then powered my Gtab off/on, I kept getting the popup.
It eventually went away, but I'm wondering if this was because of Firefox, or was something going on with the xda website?
I want to try another browser, because of the problem I'm having with the default Gtab browser dying/going back to Home screen.
Thanks,
Jim

I use Fox2phone quite a bit for easily sending links to my phone from the comp.
But off late i've been facing some issues where the links sent are a hit or miss..
need to restart the phone every now & then to get the links sent.
just wondering if there are any alternatives out there which does a similar function or perhaps even more?
thanks
Ya, PushBullet and it is awesome!!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pushbullet.android
In my opinion it trumps Chrome2Phone times 10.
Can push files/links/etc from browser to phone and vice-versa. Oh and you can also get notifications of pretty much anything (texts, email) on your Chrome Browser on your PC which is handy.
+1 Pushbullet
Wow. Great and useful app. Lists, maps, links, notes and even files. Super easy and mirroring of your phone's notifications in the reverse direction to your browser!

Thanks much!
Exactly what i needed
@bekyndnunwind
have you had any instances when this did NOT work?
shows as pushed from Firefox, but link doesn't appear in the phone..
if i open push bullet & view pushes, it shows the links there, but it doesn't appear in the phone
i can't even replicate this..
if i restart the phone & push something, i get it..
does this require sync to be enabled or something?
In Chrome at least, it works so fast, as in less than a second. I'm almost wondering now if it's not gulping juice in the background.

I've never had a problem where it doesn't pop up instantly, but I do use Chrome not that it would have anything to do with it. Maybe it does require sync?? Not too sure about that. So if you restart the phone it starts working but then it stops working after a while? Very confused, as I've never had a single issue with it. You should try going to the PushBullet website and contacting them, they may be able to help you.

i actually did get in touch with them..
i pressed send & even before i could blink i had a reply from a rep called Ryan.
He explained that since they use Google's Cloud service, if there is any delay at their end it may not deliver to us.
he did not mention anything about sync being on or off..
i also queried him about using different instances for each installation under 'devices', cos i use firefox at home & at office and both show up just as Firefox.
you can't really differentiate between them & can't be renamed either.
he said the team is working on a platform based segmentation (macs, PCs etc) & that should be coming soon

Doesnt chrome sync only mirror tabs/history/favorites of pages you are viewing or have viewed in chrome? With pushbullet you can create notes or lists that you can send to anything that has pushbullet installed. You can also directly push a file (max 25MB) from one device directly to another. I find it incredibly useful and use it on a daily basis.
And for those asking above, if you want to get the notifications instantly, you *DO* need Sync active on your mobile device. If you dont, just open pushbullet and manually update the list and it should appear. The amount of time it takes to reach your phone still relies on your network speed obviously, but it's normally pushing such a small amount of data that it's almost instantaneous.

Hi guys!
So today I opened up my Facebook application and was graced with a beautiful new, fluid UI. I am a member of the Alpha Team, however I have rigorously tested this new interface and I cannot find any bugs with it what so ever.
Gone is the horrible sidebar that once was, the layout is extremely similar to that of the latest Twitter application, apart from the Settings are not on a three button menu.
I've uploaded some screenshots to my Dropbox, take a look here!

It's so nice update but I don't know why the FB application is still using so much from the battery
Anyway the FB application keep syncing the things everytime you connect to internet so... I don't have it

I have heard a few people moan about this in the past, but I have genuinely never had any issues with Facebook and battery. In the settings there is an option to the reduce the refresh rate to just once every four hours, I think you can even disable it completely to be honest. I have Facebook on my Note 3 though and with or without Facebook installed I pretty much get the exact same battery life.

Agreed. Ugly, and bored.
The UI work is fine. As mentioned, the wakelocks and battery use are terrible. Even when I turn off sync and notifications, Facebook causes more wakelocks than most other apps and uses a lot of data. They should address that but it seems they never will so I use the web sites.

I find it unfair how random people are getting the new UI and yet I haven't gotten it yet even though I've been in the alpha program since it first started.
Do we still get the new UI for facebook app? I mean for everyone!! ??

totally agree!
It's server decided. Any issues with not seeing the new UI have nothing to do with the application. users who get the new newsfeed SHOULD get the new UI. Not definite in all cases though.
I "think" I got it
People are asking about this new UI all over the internet, and when my friend came asking why he still has the old UI on his Note 3, while I have the flat UI on my Note 2, I had to dig into it...
First of all, we both have exactly the same version of the apk from the Play store (6.0.0.28.28), I even sent him the apk from my device to be 100% sure. He logs into his account on his Note 3, gets old UI. I log into my account on his Note 3 after clearing data, I get the old UI as well (so it is not server/account related issues as mentioned before, we even have been sharing the same router at the time).
He logs into his account on my Note 2, he gets new UI. I log him out, force stop, clear all data, and log into my account, I get the OLD UI !! Weird right ?!
I looked everywhere in the settings, maybe I made a toggle or something before ... then I remembered I don't see the "Home" settings under the FB app settings. I had "Home" installed previously and then removed. So I installed "Home" and activated it. Logged into Facebook and voila, the new UI !
I logged off again, force stopped, cleared data, and removed "Home" entirely. Logged in again, same old UI. Installed "Home" one more time, activated it, logged into FB, and the new UI came up. I uninstalled "Home", logged out (didn't clear data), and logged in again, and I still got the new UI. So I am guessing it has to be related to the Facebook "Home" app, somehow it leaves a setting in FB app data to enable the new UI !
Tried doing the same on my friend's N3, but "Home" is for funny reasons isn't compatible with his device as of now. Sent him the apk and installed it, it nagged that it isn't compatible with this device, so we couldn't truly "activate" it. He still has the old UI.
I hope this casts a light on the problem of not having the new UI and helps others. I only tried it on a couple of "similar" devices, so your feedback is also appreciated
What was your exact process for setting up the home launcher? I have a sgs4 and tried this, no dice.

I have found a method to use Facebook without the messenger app. It works with all versions I've tried however because it's a glitch, the newer the version the more glitches occur. The version I use is from May 28th 2015 so you will not be losing any features really and you can still FACEBOOK CALL!!!
Ok so the method is uninstall Facebook and messenger, when you uninstall Facebook you need to clear cache/data.
Now you need to go to https://developers.facebook.com/docs/android/downloads this is the official developers Facebook page so you know there wont be any viruses or anything.
Download ''Facebook APK 29.0'' this is the last version that allows messages without the messenger app. You need to extract the .apk using winzip and move it to your phone. When you install V29.0 run it and make sure you can access your messages without the messenger app, sometimes left over files from the newer version force you to install messenger even though this version doesn't require it. If it doesn't let you access your messages you need to clear data/cache/force stop and try loading it again, this is a pain sometimes as it takes awhile for the app to set up each time but it will work. It worked for me first time which is how I came across this glitch but after playing around with different versions I found V29.0 started asking me to install messenger and took around 3 times clearing data/cache before it worked.
Next step, once you have messages working on V29.0 is to download V34.0 and install it over the top of V29.0. Don't clear data, if you do this it won't work. Once installed it should have the left over files from V29.0 and it will let you view your messages, reply to them and even make calls!!
This glitch can be a little tricky to get to work or it can be very easy, it all depends.
One thing I have noticed is when you install V29.0 the screen freezes and you have to exit and reload the app, this seems to happen every time for me, but backing out fixes it and it doesn't happen again. The other thing is if you install V35.0 the Facebook calls don't work, I seem to remember getting V35.0 to work with calls but it's not working now for me, you may want to try it, if you do let me know if you get it working. You can update to the latest version of Facebook but I wouldn't recommend as it is buggy.
I know this is long and a bit of a pain but it works beautifully once you get it working, V34.0 has all the features I need, the only it seems to be missing is the built in browser for viewing websites. Everything else I have tested works, tagging friends in comments/photos/statuses, playing videos, stickers, smiley's ect... plus you get the old interface which I prefer to the new one.
Any questions feel free to ask and let me know if it works for you, if it does hit the 'thanks' button
Thanks alot sir. This is very cool.
I used final facebook right now (55), if i update the app will impact on chat or not sir?
Hello all, I know Facebook still offered a sort off backroom code for messenger still deeply embedded within the app however even with this method which by the way, works, once you install last build (v58) it doesn't direct you to install messenger, but to the web version of Facebook since the embedded messenger code no longer exists there. Maybe if you find which was the last build that had messenger still somewhere in there, we could update to it

I seem to be having a weird issue with my S8+. Whenever I open a Facebook notification, instead of going into the already open Facebook app and refreshing to the Notification point, I get a new Facebook app instance launched (up to 3 at a time).
Also the erratic notifications are not visible in the main app, even if I refresh.
I have only one Facebook account, no third party FB apps. Just the Facebook (not Beta) app and FB Messenger app (and that works OK).
Given that the FB has burned through half my 2GB data allowance this month I'm inclined to blame some of it on the triple instance eating through resources.
I've been reading a lot on how the real FB app is a total battery hog and Data hog due to running background processes. I can't comment on your odd issue when opening FB but suggest you consider an FB alternative. I'm trying out Friendly for FB. It includes Messenger too. Seems to be way less intrusive (running in background) but I can't quote any stats for you. I am seeing better battery life now. I don't look too much at data usage since I have unlimited. Good luck!

It's because the Facebook app sucks. I would suggest turning any auto play/upload options to save data by the way.

One issue was that. Had it off on my Nexus 6P. Then forgot to turn Autoplay off on this one (and thinking that Autoplay was off by default on Cellular. It wasn't).

Yeah that was burning a lot of people when Facebook first enabled it and of course it's on by default in the app when you install it clean.
Same issue!
I'm also a Nexus 6P upgrader, and I'm experiencing the same issue! It's actually the ONLY annoyance I have with the 8+, though I was also quite fond on generic Android, so I'm working to adapt my phone settings to that experience, as much as I can...
I'll be interested to see if there's a solution to this. Currently, I'm just avoiding clicking on the notifications, or remembering to close the extra Facebook app(s) if I do.

I have at times used many alternatives like Friendly, especially with my Nexus 6P which had an awfull battery, but keep going back to FB apps. Seem more featured and polished to me.
Yeah I have this too not seen a fix yet
Same thing happening to me. Are you also getting the Facebook status bar issue where it's going wonky all the time?
I think as a workaround if you just launch FB app and go to notifications within the app you are fine. As you said if you go from a FB notification it seems to open a new FB process which is definitely not good for battery or memory.

Problem is the app doesn't show the (same) notifications I get from SystemUI. So I get different notifications from Android and different from the app. It's like they are fighting each other.
I tried disabling the Samsung preinstalled Facebook packages but the issue remains.
I seem to have resolved the issue.
First a couple of notes.
I've had the phone since May. I got the June and July updates, but issue was not resolved.
I did a full reset and issue persisted.
I did a full reset without any restores from Google or Samsung. Didn't even login to my accounts. Same thing.
So I did a full flash of the latest official ROM using Odin. In the process I used the European unbranded CSC instead of my provider's (CYV Cyta Vodafone).
Problem solved. So apparently it was something to do with that specific branch. Minor market would also explain why I seem to be the only one reporting this.
Hmmmm! I seem to have this problem. Not rooted on a G955W. Anymore clues?
I do have it as well
Same issue on note 8
I seem to have a similar issue where Facebook will have more than one instance running after a while. I can alternate between the two instances running by pushing home and then going back into the app so for instance it will be in a video where I left off and then when I push home it will go to a an instance where I am commenting on a post and then when I push home again and go back it will go back to the video. The only way to temporarily fix it is to force quit the app for me.
