Today I noticed, while having my phone in a pocket, that it vibrates. Thought it was an sms or something but after I pulled it out, the screen was black. And kept on restarting itself in like 10 second intervals. Then the screen got stuck black with backlight on. Now I cannot power it on. It does it by itself randomly. No way to enter bootloader. After pressing hard buttons I randomly get a vibration feedback. Tried 2 different batteries. If I plug the charger in, no light comes up. After maybe 20 minutes on charger it gets warm (not where the battery is but above where the radio is).
Anyone ever seen this before? Any ideas would be more than greatly appreciated!!!!

Try this,
Turn off phone, push volume down and plug in the usb cable to your computer, don't turn it on, if the hardware is ok, tricolor should appear.

Thanx for the tip. My phone, however, resurrected by itself in the middle of night after it did hard reset by itself. So I used raphdiag and reloaded new rom. Hope to never see this again!
So here is the deal...
My kids needed a night light as we are on vacation so I decided to plug the power charger and left the flashlight app on the entire night. Now that I think about it not a smart idea.
When I woke up this AM the phone had the battery charging icon on the screen. This only appears when the phone is charging while it is powered off.
So far I have removed the battery several times and tried to power the phone on with no success.
I have also tried to hold the volume down and press the power button as recommended on various forums with no luck.
I am overseas right now (home town is the usa) and I need my phone more than if I was home .
Any idea how the flashlight app left ON while also powering may have caused this?
Or is this just a coincidence and I am having an issue that others are having and it is not related to what I did last night?
Thanks and any help is greatly appreciated.
By flashlight app do you mean one that turns on the camera flash or one that leaves the screen on?
I am also unclear what you mean by:

Does the icon appear even when not charging? Does the screen function at all? Or does the phone seem completely dead, as in not even vibrating when powering on after removing battery.
If it was the camera flash, it might have overheated and damaged something, but this is just my speculation.
By flashlight I mean the one that leaves the screen on in white color.
The icon only appears while the phone is hooked up to the charger. When I unlplug it it disappears. (So to me this answers your question if the screen works at all).
The phone does not vibrate when I try to power it on after I remove and put back the batter.
Thanks for your quick reply and hope this answers your questions.
This should help anyone with a Z3 or Z3 compact where their phone doesn't turn on or do ANYTHING.
In my experience I was using my 2 week old Z3, no problems, until one day I locked the screen using the power button and it wouldn't turn back on.
I tried everything, soft reset, hard reset, yellow button next to sim card tray, plugging it into my computer etc etc. Still nothing.
I knew the phone was working because it started to get quite hot towards the top of the phone.
Eventually came across a fix that worked for me and hopefully will for you, so don't think you've got a shiny new ornament just yet.
I don't know what is required and what isn't but this is what worked for me:
1. Hold the volume down button for 30 seconds
2. Keep it held and plug your phone into a power source (wall or computer) using the USB cable. No response?
3. Let go of the volume down button. Now press the volume down button and power button together for 5 seconds. Still no response?
4. Press the volume up button and power button together for 10 seconds. This should cause your device to vibrate 3 times and then show the battery charging screen.
5. Turn the device on using the power button as normal.
Alas!
I was ready to send mine off to Sony's awfully long repair service which last time took nearly 8 weeks (I could've personally driven to Japan/China and back from the UK)
Hope this works for someone!
I think the last step is all that's required. Holding the volume up button & power button for a few seconds (5? 10?) will cause it to vibrate 3 times and reset. It gets you out of pretty much anywhere; learned that from messing with my Z1C's bootloader.
Having the same problem
I'm having the same problem, my Z3 compact is nearly 4 weeks old.
during 5 in the morning, my battery is at 80%, then I lock the screen and went to sleep.
then I woke up around 4pm and my phone is dead as ****, doesn't respond to anything
I do. I've tried what you've said in this post and nothing happens.
I have few APPS in my phone and I never tried exposing my phone into water. can somebody please

One pretty important feature you left out here, which is as close as you can get as a battery pull, open the microsd slot, and inside is a little yellow button, push this in will 9 times out of 10 power cycle your phone.

I am having the same problem. I just bought the device through Amazon DE and i am thinking in returning it. Any way to solve this ?
I have noticed that in my case, at least, this is always happening when the battery percentage is getting close to 50% (half of the battery is consumed). I have KitKat 4.4.4 and i expect this problem to be solved with the new Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade.

Hello all,
Xperia Z3 (Tmo D6616) since January. Super happy with the phone, especially being able to run long distance without worrying about sweat damage, listening to music in the shower, and other shenanigans otherwise impossible before. Anyways, yesterday morning i was showering, phone was alright. After shower dried the phone with a towel and put it on a shelf in the bathroom. Forgot about the phone for thirty minutes, came back and noticed that the camera had fog condensation inside the lens. Ohhhh! crap, so I open the ports and put the phone near a fan. Also, phone wont turn on... So my first thought is water damage. So I packed the phone in dry rice for a few hours. Take sim and SD card out. Next i decide to power cycle the phone with the yellow button on the sim port. Phone buzzes three times. But after that... nothing. Phone has been stored in rice since. When i plug it i get rapid red led blinking. I called Tmo and dude tells me that he has the same phone, and that it souds like deep sleep, not water damage, due to led and buzzing. Problem is i can't replicate buzzing and no combination of the above seems to work. At a loss. Any of you know what the red led blinking means while the usb charger plugged?
PS: condensation gone from phone, or so it seems.
Same problem
Hi all,
After 4 weeks my new Z3 would randomly shutdown and I would turn it back on, until of course it refused to switch back on.
I have attempted a hard reset using all 3 combinations of the power and volume buttons. The only response was 3 vibrations from holding all 3 buttons whilst plugged into a charger. The red light would flash intermittently whilst on charge, and constantly when either buttons are held down.
When plugged into a PC, the USB connection would repeatedly connect and disconnect.
Is there any hope? I need to recover photos from my mothers funeral.

FYI, currently in RMA process through Tmo... gonna get a refurb... not the happiest camper with Sony's approach, however, this begs the question: Given the spate of issues with Z3's maybe a refurb would not be such a bad idea, especially if it addresses the issues that are most common... Anyone received a Z3 refurbished? Would you mind sharing your experience?

Doesn't help you, but as a side note, I had mine replaced twice using Jump and both times I received a brand new phone sealed in the box. BTW, last one has Dec 14 build date and the assembly is much better than earlier ones I had.
super thanks!!!

hello, at last i found the answer,! tried all the suggested actions i searched on the blogs, but this one really worked for my xperia z3c and after that it updated to lollipop, i hope it would not shut down randomly again, i'll wait for maybe 2 months before i actually make it my main phone again, but at least it's back now and i really miss my xperia z3c, it's really the best for me thanks to you!!! God bless!
Sometimes (once/day), when i woke up my Z3C from sleep, the touch screen is frozen and the only way is to reboot it with power and volume buttons.
How can i debug this behavior ? I found nothing about that issue...
Thanks for this post!
I've managed to get to the point of three vibrations, but then it just burns the leds in three colors, and then vibrates 3 times again and so on.
I've also managed to get to a point where the led stays constant blue (by playing with the volume up/down).
But now what?
Worked for me
:good::good:
the 4th step worked for me, thank you
4. Press the volume up button and power button together for 10 seconds. This should cause your device to vibrate 3 times and then show the battery charging screen.
Xperia Z3 keeps restarting when trying to charge
Hi all, I don't know if someone did encounter same problem as I. Yesterday my Z3 was 100% charged. Overnight the phone started to restart and battery % went nearly dead showing around 2% left and the red led light starting blinking as well. I tried to plug on charge to a wall source and now it keeps restarting and the "Sony" logo only would appear and it keeps to restart again.
Saw some solutions among which I have tried press holding the volume up button along the power button so as it should vibrate 3 time but in vain. The phone ain't charging anymore and it keeps restarting either plugged with my pc or wall.
Please can anyone help on this one?
Cheers
Kris

Sorry for my bad english !!
So this morning i unplugged my phone, fully charged, and used a flashlight app. Then all of the sudden my phone just went black and i have not been able to get it to do anything for over an hour and a half now. No matter what i do it will not turn on. Ive tried to power button/rockers combo to get it to turn on, nothing, Ive tried the little button in the sd card compartment, nothing.... Anyone else have this issue? I cannot find anything on the Z3 for this, only stuff for the older models... Thanks.
Hold volume up and power button until the phone vibrates. Then connect a USB cable to your computer while holding volume down on the phone. If the phone is recognised by the pc you should be able to flash your phone using flash tool and hopefully that will get you back up and running. That's the only solution I can think of. Maybe some other members might be able to help if this don't work.

Hello, my girlfriend have the same problem in his Xperia Z3. When she works his phone lying on the desk. She want call to me and the power/lock button don't work. She call to me from other mobile phone and she describe problem. After 10 seconds search in google I find a way to restart phone. She pressed little yellow switch under nano Sim/micro SD plug. Phone power down and never give up. Power button is dead, combinations : vol+ and power , vol- and power, vol+ and vol- and power also didn't work. When I plug the USB cable the charging will start normally. In screen I have a big battery icon with animation.
Maybe someone have similar problem with Z3 and know a solution??
Well if its the button, tap to wake could solve the problem till you decide to get it repaired.
It could also be a battery issue. Try charging for a few hours on a charger and then try turning on after connecting to a PC with phone drivers by holding the power button for like 10secs. That is the method used for HTC phones with similar issues.
The HTC One X had battery issues for some where it would not turn on until it was connected to thr charger for a few hours. I had, had the same issue you mentioned and tried the method mentioned above but never turned on. Repair shop tested the battery and eventually had to replace a bad mothetboard.
That is not normal and even if you could get it back from that sort of failure, you don't want this device unless it is fixed or replaced.

Still nothing. Power/unlock button is dead. Today I go to sell point (T-mobile Poland ) and leave for warranty repair. I used Xperia Z3 for 2 weeks
If you are within 14 days TMO should give you a brand new device.
I'm having the same problem too. I tried to use the flashlight app for the first time and it just completely bricked my Z3.

Just happened to me today- Xperia Z3 Compact
So last night, i left my phone to charge after reaching 5%. When I woke up, my phone won't start and it won't charge either. The LED indicator was not lighting when it is plugged.
I tried every trick:
1. Pressed down the power button in different lengths.
2. No. 1 but with the volume down key
3. Pressed down the yellow button on the sim card tray
4. Tested 5 different charger heads and different wires
5. Tried connecting to 2 different laptops to see if my phone will be recognized
I work close by a Sony Center so I was planning on passing by after work. I was already having a really bad day and my phone is not under warranty. Throughout the morning, I'd randomly check the power button if it will finally work. FORTUNATELY, during lunch, the LED indicator finally lit up! The batt was drained so I had to charge it and wait a few minutes before turning it on. Finally it's on. I don't know what the eff happened or if it is really resolved.
I'd still want to know what the hell is wrong with Xperia Z phones??
Mines 'died' twice, both times the only way I could get it to turn back on was to connect to magnetic charger dock/cable
this is really works on me.. !!! try this one.....

It's called the 'sudden death' bug and a small number of sony xperia phones die from it., including the Z3. It is more common in the Z3 Compact (I suffered from it and had to get it replaced). Just google sony Z3 sudden death.
Did the OP use a quick charger on his Z3? The reason I ask is that the repairer I sent my Z3C to originally said the motherboard was gone and needed to be replaced, possibly cased by current. I used to use a quick charger on my Z3C and wonder if it caused it as the phone worked perfectly for 6 weeks before dying.
There are several so called fixes and workarounds that work for some people, not all. Only a motherboard replacement fixes it properly.
Fix for Z3 not powering up / no charge LED
My Z3 would not power up and no charge LED when cable plugged in. Finally found this solution on Sonymobile support website which fixed my phone!
To force the device to restart
Detach the SIM card slot cover.
Using the tip of a pen or similar object, press and hold down the small OFF button (generally indicated by the text "OFF") until the device has emitted three vibrations, and then release the OFF button. The device turns off automatically.
Charge the device until a charging icon appears on the screen.
Turn on your Xperia™ device.
If a forced restart procedure as described above doesn't succeed in turning on your device, you should try another kind of forced restart - the 2-minute restart procedure.
To force a 2-minute restart
Detach the SIM card slot cover.
Using the tip of a pen or similar object, press and hold down the small OFF button (generally indicated by the text "OFF") for 120 seconds (ignoring any vibrations), and then release the OFF button.
Charge the device until a charging icon appears on the screen.
Turn on your Xperia™ device.
I had to hold the 'off' button for about 60 seconds before the phone vibrated and sprung into life - phew!
I bought mine with the broken screen so I don't know for sure what happened. Bid won for $37
The led light came on when plugged in, but no vibrations. The computer recognized it and installed as the D6633. Properties show the battery had charged to 29%, 60%, 99%.
But clicking into it just shows a blank page. No folders, drive volumes, or anything.
However if it is not hooked up to a charger or computer then as well as no vibration there is no lights either. Does get a little warm though.
Bought the new display and powerflex. Still wont turn on, no vibrations, and only shows led when plugged in.
Tried the volume up, down, power, all three, reset button in sim tray.
PC Companion can't work with it. It almost worked once but said if there was a google account and I did not have the info I would be facing the whole account lock fiasco....No thank you. Can't even get it to recognize it for that option properly anymore anyway.
Could easily connect it into fastboot mode, but getting it into flash mode took much much much more effort. But eventually I did and flashed an image with flash tool. Went fine. Flashed everything......NO CHANGE......
I'm guessing at this point maybe the board was more damaged than seems....Though it's weird how the computer recognizes it and can flash everything.
Or there is a damaged power IC, transistor, capacitor, or something.
I really hope Sony took care of this in the Z5 and it is no longer an issue in future devices. It was said in a few comments above that only a few people are affected....Yet there are endless searches and pages with a dramatic number of users facing it.
Got a perculiar problem with the S6. The screen suddenly went black with just the blue LED blinking in the upper left hand corner of the sreen. I am assuming the phone went off completely as I cannot access it via the PC also. I have tried all possible button combinations for reset but no luck so far.
Anyone else experience this? Did you find a fix?
Sent from my SM-G920V using XDA Free mobile app
Well the phone is not off if the blue led light is blinking, I've never had it happen to me where the phone didn't come back though. I was using an app one day (YouTube I think) and the app crashed and bugged the phone out to where the screen went black but the led was blinking. I left the phone alone after several attempts of hitting home and power to get the screen to come back on and finally I think I plugged it into the charger and it kind of just fixed it self and has not happened again. This is the scary parts of not having a removable battery.

I've got the 128GB and yes I have experienced this as well, twice! I hold down both volume buttons the home button and the power button at the same time, this will put you in maintenance mode. It'll take a couple of seconds holding those buttons but just keep them pressed. Be careful because when it does come on it comes on fast and factory reset is the second selection in that mode. The first time I did it I wiped my phone, the second time it happened I lifted my fingers fast enough not to make a selection. Give that a try and see what happens.

Sounds like you have the same problem as stated in OP. You could try doing what was recommended earlier in the thread. By the way, this is an inappropriate location to put your problem. Read the forum rules
Never rooted.
I am having the same issue. I have tried everything. Factory reset. Reboot/wiped cache and even trying to install verizon's Fireware again as it come only up to the Samsung S6 logo then goes blank. This is now my 4th replacement with Verizon and getting sick of it. How do I fix this? Odin stops at Get Pit mapping then when I do that says it can not install NAND. Using Odin 3.10.6 and 3.10.7. Tried mutli cables and restarted computer as well. This is driving me insane these phones keep doing this.
same problem except nothing comes on. no led, no reset, no computer recognition...
Same issue. Boots into and displays recovery fine and download mode. I can also bring up the safe mode menu ... just can't boot into the OS. Blue light on. I get a response in ADB when powered on, just can't enter any commands due to not being able to authorize access via phone screen.
