Simultaneous OTG and Charge - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have a Z5 Compact, but assume this answer would be the same, has anyone had experience using an OTG connection that also charges the phone? And if so, do they know what pin configuration works with that? I've heard that different OEMs use different pin layouts for cables that will provide OTG and power at the same time and am curious what the Z5 family uses so I can get the right cable with my Kickstarted Superbook
Thanks for any help!

Funny, I actually have. I work in a computer repair/data recovery shop and we have a phone in with a broken screen/lcd. Long story short is that the device did not work with the phone we got it for, nor my phone (Galaxy S5), and I know my MHL works on my phone but we needed KB/Mouse support as well.
It may have been a bunk device and we haven't requested a replacement yet, so If you try it out let me know if yours works, and when we get our replacement i'll let you know.
actually the seller replied to me and says that this cannot do hdmi and otg at the same time but apparently this dock does : http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=ite...obalID=EBAY-US&ssPageName=ADME:X:ACME:US:1123
but this dock is not compatible with galaxy s5 ... i wonder why

Unfortunately I don't think so, I used this:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Lindy-73391-...6?pt=DE_Computer_Sonstige&hash=item462bc81bb0
with a s4, and it worked prperly, but when connected to s5 it doesn't even turns on. I think it is because s5 doesn't have a docking mode, in fact if you go in Settings-->accessories, there is only an option for sound on hdmi, while in s4 there were more (and one was for the docking mode)
I couldn't find anything that worked reliably and consistently. So I use the MHL for HDMI output and use a Bluetooth Keyboard and mouse...

This is a good solution, but I'm wondering why, since 11 pin connectors usually can handle hdmi and usb otg on the same time, why old dock stations for 11 pin device don't work?
using micro 3.0 for MHL and OTG
i have a SM-G900P and if i make a OTG and MLH cable through usb 3.0 do you think i could charge and use HDMI and 2 usb for keyboard and mouse. My goal is to make my phone like a mini computer on the go for my roms and movies
Possibly use the USB 3.0 Micro-b connection?
All my googling on this matter with the S5 seems to lead to one inevitable conclusion, the S5 won't allow for simultaneous MHL and OTG use, because the S5 uses the 5pin connector and not the 11pin connector (as the S4 seemed to). What I don't understand is, isn't the S5 using USB 3.0 instead of the USB 2.0 as on the S4? How could the S5 allow for faster data transfer rates and yet not be able to transfer more types of data at once?
Isn't there a way to utilize the entire USB 3.0 micro-b format (which apparently has 10 pins, 5 for backwards compatibility with USB 2.0 (except 5pin, and not 11pin), and 5 extra for USB 3.0 speeds) to use MHL and OTG and charging simultaneously?

I'm having an issue with MHL adapter on my S5, When I connect my MHL adapter to my S5, the audio on my TV seems delayed, but when I tried it on my S3, the audio is perfectly fine. Is this something to do with S5 having 5 pin only wherein S3 having 11pin?
I saw a 5 pin to 11 pin converter on Amazon, will this solve this issue? And possibly the issue of not being able to use MHL/HDMI and USB at the same time?
buy chrome cast you can screen mirror or use almost any app directly to the tv when it comes to videos and such theres a little allshare
button at the top of like the video player, you tube etc.
also a smart tv does the same thing only better (all the above scenarios will only work with a connected network)
what is wrong with the image quality?
Chromecast works for me at home or anywhere it has standard wifi, but is too painful in most hotels that use a web user login. Without net access it was almost useless last time I tried. I could pair with it, but it wouldn't stream local files from my device. Most places I've stayed in the last few years have an active HDMI port on their tv, so the MHL HDMI and OTG with USB wireless mouse on an S3 worked for me, even though I couldn't charge at the same time. Haven't been able to make that work so far with anything I've tried on the S5.
Still no luck with S5 docking (MHL+OTG)
Hello!
I've been using this adapter for a while with a Samsung Galaxy S4:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/MHL-...or-Samsung-Galaxy-S3-S4-Note/32461052976.html
Charging, HDMI connection and USB keyboard + mouse works very nice.
Unfortunately no luck with S5. Not even charging works. I read S5 doesn't use 11-pin USB (because of the USB 3.0 plug, etc...). If that's true, then not even installing a custom ROM would make the docking work.
According to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57336973&postcount=4, "the G800F is capable of USB OTG. It simply is not enabled in the stock firmware." I know this is about a S5 Mini, but wouldn't it be the same for the S5?

Connect Xperia to TV using USB-C to HDMI cable? HDMI alt mode capable?

Does the XZ or the XZ Premium support HDMI alternative or alt mode through the USB-C port?
This is what I'm talking about :
https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2016/9/1/12758384/usb-c-hdmi-alt-mode-cables-specifications
I think Sony dropped MHL support because of the google cast.
Not sure if usb C to HDMI works, but you can find out and let us know
Apparently the Snapdragon 835 natively supports Displayport alt mode.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWlkkM8SkDQ
I've bought this HUB with HDMI recently: https://www.amazon.de/Delivery-Auflösung-Ladefunktion-Macbook-ChromeBook/dp/B01BXOW3V0 but haven't got the HDMI Port to work so far, I'll try again later propably.

I've tried it again but it didn't work. The Device might not support Displayport over USB C at all or we just need to wait for an Software Update.
Check if your device supports Displayport alt mode.
Or you could try it with a Displayport alt mode capable USB-C to HDMI cable or adapter.
C to HDMI cable didn't work.

Hi @AndroPlus.
Thanks for chiming in.
May I ask which USB-C to HDMI cable you tried to use on your Sony Xperia XZ Premium for direct audiovisual output to TV ?
Is your cable DisplayPort alt mode capable?
Thanks.

Is your cable DisplayPort alt mode capable just like this one? This cable here is marketed as DisplayPort alt mode capable and it's supposed to work with Samsung Galaxy S8 which also uses the Snapdragon 835 chipset. So theoretically it should also work with Sony Xperia XZ Premium out of the box.

I used this one (it supports Galaxy S8):

I tried with multiple TV and monitor, but it didn't work.
[UPDATE]
I checked with HTC U11 and it works, so cable itself is good.
Unfortunately I can confirm that the Sony Xperia XZ Premium does not support Displayport alt mode at this moment in time. Perhaps Sony developers might add Displayport support in the near future though but don't hold your breath.
The hardware capability is there thanks to the incredible Snapdragon 835 but for some reason Sony decided to remove this feature through software or rather a lack thereof.
It's a shame really. Now I need to return this phone and buy a flagship smartphone from one of the competitors just to get this displayport functionality.
Hi, Oreo update has been just released for Sony Xperia XZ Premium. Any new info about USB-C to HDMI output compatibility? Can someone test it? Im thinking of buying this phone, but this is a must have feature for me. No luck with Google search.
Ditto-- any news since Oreo update?
Anyone try since the Oreo update? Results?
I just try to plug in the phone with a switch to usb C dock (capable to use with nintendo switch) but it still didn´t work for me, and nothing appears on the screen. The charging and usb are working correctly, so Oreo still haven´t HDMI support for our Phones
I connected the adapter I bought, and my phone did recognize my TV, but it didn't actually stream video to it.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xz-premium/how-to/displayport-alt-mode-t3739553
just because a chipset supports something doesn't mean its physically connected, not even having the pins connected on the PCB will determine if it can support it, the hardware could be disabled in multiple locations and supporting chips may not even be present. yes it may well be software limited but don't hold your breath, since time began manufactures have be dropping functions from chipsets
Yes it's possible and feasible. Ignore that lame know-it-all naysayer and doubter above ^^
@Inerent
Thanks for creating a bounty thread for it.
You might want to turn it into a crowd funded fundraiser though.
100 bucks is not much of an incentive for the talented and hard working developers. Keep in mind they do this in their spare time. We must support their hard work.

How were you able to tell the phone recognized the TV? Was it data transfer protocol maybe?

I have an app called Sentio desktop. It activates if an external display is connected, or a keyboard is connected. I didn't connect a keyboard at that time, so it must've detected an external display. I tried using OTG for plenty of other things. It doesn't make mistakes. Sentio only launched when I connected a keyboard, not external storage, or even a mouse. Only when I connected a 2 in one (mouse+keyboard) did Sentio launch.
And when I hooked my phone up to the TV with the HDMI cable.
Do you think that that piece of information could be useful in making a kernel mod to make it work?

Possible to activate desktop experience without the samsung dex dock?

Hey all...so....long time android user.....my very first phone was the Motorola Atrix 4G - one of the first to offer fingerprint logins to the phone AND also had a mini-hdmi out port which hooked into a special "dock" motorola manufactured to create a desktop experience....although, I think at the time it wasn't just a dock, it was like a whole mini-laptop thing with a keyboard and stuff....
ANYWAY, the point I'm making is, I think someone found a way to activate the desktop mode and all you had to do was use the hdmi-out port (the phone came with a compatible hdmi cable) and connect it to a monitor or tv and you could use a BT connected mouse and keyboard and voila! You now have the "desktop" experience without having to buy their phone-into-a-laptop-adapter.
So....is it possible to activate this experience over a usb-to-hdmi adapter? The phones already came supplied with an OTG adapter....
Anyway....would love to know if anyone knows of anything like this or has the knowledge and skill to make this happen?

I believe you can get a usb c to HDMI without the need for the otg connector...don't quote me though because I lost the thread I read it in...

Otg with charging

Hey guys, I'm fixing to refunction an original Pixel as a 3D printer server (Octoprint), and OTG works a treat, however I cannot keep the phone charged while using OTG.
Is there a working solution for this? I don't mind getting my hands dirty.
Thanks y'all.
It's a bit finicky, you just have to find the right usb-c hub that supports charging and OTG.
one thing I noticed was the usb-c hub I am using supports passthrough PD charging (your pixel stock charger is a PD charger). if your usb-c pd charger power output is too high, i think it might run into issues with the hub.
by chance, my usb-c hub that supports passthrough PD charging is paired with a generic charger.... both the charging and OTG function may sometimes take a few connection attempts to get it working.... trying different combination of plugging in the charger to the hub, OTG device (i use a microsdxc card reader) and plugging into the pixel.
all i can say is good luck!

hey just wanted to say, funny I should find this thread because I'm trying to achieve the exact same thing (Octoprint server) with an old Galaxy Note 4, and can't for the life of me figure out why OTG charging/data would be disabled. Did you manage to figure out a fix?

Alas, nope - not without soldering directly to the main board. I just gave AliExpress $15 instead and they gave me a Rockchip-based MXQ Pro Android TV box in return (that sits under my printer). I parked Armbian Linux on it, then plugged in a webcam. Working like a dream. Thinking of switching to Klipper at some point, so going the TV box route was probably for the best (on account of the 4 CPU cores, loadsa RAM and internal storage, and the four or five USB ports).
Ps, sorry about the formatting - my phone flipped out cos of some annoying ad.
Thanks for the response; it's unfortunate that a solution like Octoprint 4 Android would be rendered almost pointless by something as assumedly simple as 'device can't charge via USB'.
I have a Raspberry Pi that I can probably get Octoprint running on with a cheap webcam, but I'm going to google that Android TV box you mentioned too because a few other people have mentioned that these are somehow even better/more future-proof than a RPi.

Lenovo Tab M8 OTG + Charging

I picked up a Lenovo Tab M8 from walmart (Part number: ZA5C0045US). It comes with a small dock that charges the table via a two pin connector.
I was trying to set this up with an OTG cable so that I can attach a high end sound card. I notice that once I plug the OTG cable, the tablet stops charging via the dock. It's like OTG and charging is not allowed at the same time.
I also tried making my own OTG + charging cable (with a 10K resistor between the ID pin and ground), but it seems that the OTG function will not work unless the ID pin is grounded. I know that other devices allow for OTG + charging when the ID pin has a resistor to ground with a certain value.
Is there a way of finding out if lenovo tablets allow this? If so, where can I go an find out what type of resistor value this tablet will detect as allowing the function of OTG + charging?
Also, this tablet is rooted. Is there a software based solution like my old Nexus 7 (2013) where you could enable OTG + charging?
I've been at this for a couple of days now, so any help is greatly appreciated.
Hi,
Have you had any progress on this? I would like the same function.
Doing some reading though. I think a 10k resistor is too low, normally seen 64k or 100k
Hi, I just signed up to leave a reply here. I also was looking for a replacement for my slightly outdated Nexus 2013 in my car and stumbled upon this thread. So got a used M8 (TB 8505F ZA5G0038SE) and gave it a try.
With a 10k (measured 9.8k) resistor between ID pin and ground, OTG and charge works perfectly, without changing anything in software. With a 2A charger, battery charging is pretty slow, but the battery doesn't drain while using navigation and music (contrary to the Nexus )
So, for me it is a quite good solution.
Thank you for the info guys
I also have a TB 8505F and needed this function in my car.
For me the 10K resistor works, now it both charges and I can use my accessory (OBD2 reader)
Before this I tried a 100K resistor and that did not work so I had started to give up.
Just an update, maybe someone needs the info: I tried to make a second Y-OTG-cable with the same components, and it didn't work. Charging went on and off, no otg function. I decided to play again with the resistor values and it worked again with 12.9k. Maybe there is a certain range, which the second cable was slightly out of.
Hi All, i just bought the same tablet for similar purpose and i was wondering if when the cable is built using the 10k-12.9k resistor, i can still use the docking station that it comes with>? has anyone tried it out like this?
