Noticeably missing are the Moto G 2015 (3rd Gen) and all Moto E models.
Glad to finally see official announcement. Let's hope we get invited to the soak test.
Good stuff....and now we wait.
This is the announcement i've been waiting for. Now i'll pull the trigger and buy a Moto X Pure.
don't get me wrong. it is good to see an official announcement from Motorola but I'm pretty sure we will see the updates in the phones until next year.
Motorola is not what is used to be when it comes to software updates.
I just bought the Moto X Pure. I am glad to hear that it will get upgraded to 7.0.
Good news ...
Omg!
I check 5 times a day, now it's finally coming!
yeii i just read the news and i came too to confirm im so glad, can wait for the udpate
I bought this phone about a month ago and this just made the purchase so much sweeter.

I also want to point out that the post says "Starting in Q4 with Moto Z and Moto G (4)", which is now. They would probably roll down the list in device age - with some optimism, I would say we would get the update at the latest Q2 of 2017

Updates have been pretty much every quarter... Hard to say if we will get 6.0.1 and/or a simple security update this quarter or a full N release... My money is on a simple MM update and N toward end of 1st quarter of 2017.
We will get rumors of a beta, figure it will be 45-60 days after that barring any real issues.

I don't really think they will go for 6.0.1 it'll be easier to just release n on there part especially with the employee cuts they made

The Moto G will probably be supported for 1 to 1,5 years as long as the hardware can take it.
I hope they give us Key Lime Pie (5.0) before they decide to stop updates for it.
Moto has been on the ball lately in getting updates for older devices like the Razrs so I'm holding onto hope that it will get a few more updates.

If they supported before i am sure that they will supporting it now, since they are a google company.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It should in theory get 18 months support, so Android 5.0 is a real possibility, as Google is now concentrating on getting Android to run on lower spec smartphones.
BUT
Motorola could if they want stop support for the Moto G after only 12 months, because when all said and done it isn't a true Nexus device, even though they are now owned by Google, and alot of companies don't really support their low end smartphones beyond a 12 months period, and by the time Android 5.0 is out they have a Moto G replacement in the wings.

Google are the ones who have said 18 months of updates for their nexus line. I'd imagine they will do this with Motorola as well. Hey...beats some phone makers.
Sent from my Moto X cell phone telephone.....
Well we all assume that the moto g is a "mini-nexus" and that's why it can have up to 18 months updates but, motorola never said so. It can be that it stops earlier, specially considering that its a mid-range device.
Though motorola's CEO did said they will focus on releasing less devices and give them better support. This last year (2013) they only released two devices, which is in track of what he said in that interview but doesn't guarantee that "more support" is meant to be more than a year.
I'm pretty sure it will see android 5.x , assuming google won't go all the way from 4.4 to 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 4.8, 4.9 before the big jump

"Lollipop" or "Licorice" would be my guess.
There are already lot of first-class devs around here, so I think the future of the Moto G is in good hands even without any official support

Defy+ only got to GB 2.3.6 but Quarx made it possible to decently run 4.4.2 on the old trusty defy. It's has been a long way from froyo to kitkat.
So if the Moto Gee gets attention from developers and I'm sure it will we have nothing to worry about.
I don't care as long as the hardware gets yearly updates ? If they bring out a moto g 2 for the same price with the latest firmware I'll upgrade every year, just hope the moto g 2 gets LTE

I don't think Key Lime Pie is going to be a thing... If you notice, all of the Android codenames have gone in alphabetical order. KeyLime was all speculation. KitKat filled the K spot, and 5.0 will be some L

There seems to be more custom ROMs for the normal Motorola edition than the GPE

There's less need for a custom rom when it runs stock Android. But the GPE is also getting Cyanogenmod support so there's no worry there either.
i think Moto G Motorola roms will work fine on Moto G Google Play Edition right?
My theory:
Google purposely made a GPE edition of the Moto G because they knew that they would sell Motorola and wanted to guarantee their customers updates.
Because when Motorola is sold and Google no longer owns it, Google can't give it direct updates. But with the GPE, Google can give it updates.
So yeah. I believe the GPE Moto G will be supported longer.
But of course I could be wrong. Buy whichever, I really doubt it matters in the long run. Like a previous poster said they will both be officially supported by cyanogenmod.

I don't mean that google cares about the people who bought a moto g from moto. They just want to sell the moto g themselves, even after they sell Motorola, as a low cost device with stock android that still receives their updates.

I disagree. Stock Android, while being my top choice over other UI options such as Sense or Touchwiz etc, is made better by most custom ROMs due to the tweaking and customization options that are added, which could be something as simple as changing the shortcuts on the quick toggles page, to complete over clock/under volt access. You are right about CM11 though which is awesome news.

Motorola edition has slow motion camara (love that feature) everything else it's almost stock android
For me:
1. Cm11
2. Gpe
3. Stock moto
But With gpe awesome battery life with >8h Display on Time..
Android-CM11

Hardware is the same so if you unlock your bootloader you can switch between them and decide for yourself. Also Moto added some useful stuff to the stock android like battery optimization, faster file system and they are pushing updates with user reported problems and requests.
I prefer this over the gpe edition by far, however I would buy the gpe from any other handset, this is the exception. My colleague reached 6 days uptime with 2 hrs screen time and 2 hrs talk time with wifi, 3g and bt always on.
Also there is faux's kernel which lets you tweak the stock rom on the low level part.
Sent from my phone
It appears from the specs that the Google Play Edition does not support 1700 Mhz. So no 3G on Tmobile except in the limited refarmed areas. Also no 3G on Wind Canada. Since one of the advantages of an unlocked phones is the flexibility to switch carriers, this factor limits that ability on the GPE phones.
ok guys i will buy Moto G GPE
any suggestions??
Motorola. F2fs, more update at least until now, more optimizations. And not only. I don't see the sense to buy a gpe in this specifically case.
Rom? Is pratically already a gpe in this sense.
So....

The Motorola firmware is much more optimised. ATM it is better in overall performance. You can thank F2FS for that.

Hi!
I just sold my Moto G 2015, It was getting hectic and I needed a huge update. It was a great phone though.
I just want to ask

And

Or if you are planning to replace it
"What phone do you plan to replace your Moto G 2015"

hi,
i am very much liking my MotoG2015 as its doing fine despite of facing so many RAINS
if at all, i want to change my phone.. i would never buy a phone without IPXX ratings , i want a phone which can be used even in rain
if Moto has launched any G4 series with it, i would have bought them.. but sadly they lost me this year
... so expecting that they do for g5 , else i should have to look at other brands ,
finally, i would choose IPXX rated phones, not others even though if they perform excellent
I am still happy with my rooted stock G3. Although IPXX phones are becoming more common. some of my other favorite features are hard to come by such as FM radio and a 5" screen. It seems most new phones are becoming increasing large.

I wouldn't count on next week. There's a September security patch rolling out to the X Style in some locations (UK I believe). My guess would be if they're pushing a security patch now, that may indicate Nougat will still be a couple months away for the Pure/Style. I hope I'm wrong, just speculation.

Nope. Second XT1572 patch the XT1575 has been passed over for, IIRC. Let me guess: US carrier interference of some sort behind the scenes, even though it's an unlocked retail-only phone. Watch it stop us from getting Nougat too.
