A number of people are reporting over on AndroidCentral that NFL games will not display on the InstaShare projector. It makes sense, unfortunately, given all the licensing rules and regulations, but it really sucks just the same. It's making me reconsider getting the projector. $300 isn't an easy pill to swallow and part of my internal justification was being able to watch NFL games at times when I wasn't by my TV.
I'm going to have to seriously think about the projector... what worries me is what else might be blocked because of licensing rules? Will MLB work? Will Comcast work? Will streaming video I purchased from Google work? What might be shut down later because it's a licensing issue?

NFL blocks casting and even MHL use, I do not have the projector but I do know MLB allows Chromecast streaming so I would imagine they wont block this. NFL has different pricing tiers and is very strict on what you can view on.
Yeah, the NFL can suck it.
I'm fed up with them and how they run the league. Decided that is not an organization I can support any more with my time or money.
And thus haven't watched one pro game yet this season... Coming from someone that would dedicate every Sunday during the season to the NFL in the past...

When TNF streamed from twitter you could actually project it. The NFL app blocks it for sure.
Yes, NFL app is blocked from the projector.
DirecTV Sunday Ticket DOES project with no problems.

Yes, it's a separate package you have to add on.
Okay, now that I got a projector, I'm going to try to confirm some apps that do/don't work with it:
Working:
VLC for Android (note that the video does NOT show on the phone screen when projecting. Video controls do show on screen.)
Google Play TV/Movie
Fox Sports Go App
Not Working:
NFL Mobile Live games (Says unable to cast to different screen)
Comcast/Xfinity TV App (Says: Because of security protocols required by our network partners, you can enjoy this video on your mobile device only.)
If there is anything you want me to test, let me know and I'll give it a try.
I can add that it won't work with the Time Warner/Spectrum App.
Well you could always just steam the football game from any web browser.

LIVE TV ON YOUR PHONE
I wrote this guide along time ago in other xda-developers thread, this is the updated version.
There are several ways for watching live TV on your phone, I don't watch live TV on my phone, hope you find it useful though.
(UPDATE 10/15/2010)
TV SERIES ON DEMAND ARE AVAILABLE HERE: http://x.vu/179650
(UPDATE 7/14/2010)
First -MobiTV
After testing it out it is one of the best apps for watching TV on your phone, there are 2 versions, one included on the USA HD2 and the version found on the mobitv website.
Back in early 2009 I manage to hack the 1 day free trail version, it was after they release a patched version and removing the .vars wouldnt work anymore however I never notify mobitv about it, I never post my findings online because I didn't wanna get sued, however the hack doesn't work anymore.
Second -Mobile free TV http://www.mobilefree.tv
Never tested this one out.
Third -Skyfire http://www.skyfire.com/
Skyfire is one of the best ways to watch live tv.
Some useful links to use with skyfire are:
http://www.myfreetvsite.com
http://wwitv.com
http://www.mobilefree.tv
If you know more links please post your comments.
Fourth -SPB Online or SPB TV http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/pocketpc-software/tv/
One amazing application with poor channel lineup, the programing suck (at least for me) thats all im going to say.
(update)
as off June 8th 2010 SPB TV is NOW FREE
Fifth -HandiTV http://classic.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=22918
I used this app once, didn't really like it.
Sixth -artn3r’s mobile tv http://winmo.artn3r.com/?p=12#more-12
In its early stages didn't got may attention because it had channels in German and some other language however it may be useful to you.
"This is my first windows mobile application, it’s a player for online
streaming content like movies or radio. I started this app because
everytime I wanted to view the tv news i had to open the opera
browser and navigate to the specific website. With this application,
only 3 taps are needed to watch your favourite tv or radio show!"
Seventh -Online TVx http://www.onlinetvx.com/
800+ channels this app will keep you entertained for hours, one of the features that many of you will quickly notice and will definitely like is that it has ADULT channels such as Playboy.
"Online TVx is one of the most popular and downloadable online TV programs in the Internet. This complete professional program gives you an instant access to more than 1000 TV channels categorized by genres and countries."
MORE LIVE TV LINKS CAN BE FOUND IN THIS THREAD HERE (which is the actual FULL guide)
Post your comments, links and programs you use.
wow cool thanks for this.
Thank you very much
thanks alot
downloading mobitv now if u know an hacker dont post here but email me xD
Nice one, thanks very much will test it tomorrow..
Too bad none of those "TV" apps show anything worth watching. Wish cable TV would start streaming even if for a fee. At least that way someone could watch something worth watching.
I still think ORB is really your best bet right now. You have to have a PC at home with a TV tuner - but it works quite well.
www.orb.com
...its freeware - and what you end up with is you can stream any TV channel you can get on your home cableTV or satalite to your PPC or any other computer. Really kinda cool.

Actually I stop working on hacking mobiTV along time ago since I don't watch TV and as soon as some one hacks it and makes a post online the guys over at mobiTV are on your case in no time trying to sue you.
i have SPB TV on my HD2, if i click on a channel it says Opening.. goes into landscape and goes back with the headin Opening and it stays there.
Works fine on my HD2
but Ihave a strong signal and get pretty fast download speeds (1.5 mps). Works even better on wi-fi speeds of 3.5+. A couple of stations seem to load the buffer and play then load and play again no matte what the signal and download speed.

Netflix is being a beezy and only allowing their live streaming app on phones with Snapdragon processors, which the Captivate doesn't have. Is it possible to port it over to the Captivate when it comes out?
Only time will tell. They are really working hard to stop the switching on Android or lock down Android.

It's not netflix's fault...they aren't being a beezy.
If they didn't do this they wouldn't have any content to provide and netflix would cease to exist because providers would pull the content.

No Hardware DRM = No Netflix Streaming
Hardware level DRM?
Back at Mobile World Congress in February, Qualcomm had an exciting, yet troubling announcement. Their future chips would have the DRM libraries built in to run Netflix streaming. Apparently, the key to getting movie studios' blessing for Android is hardware level DRM. If you buy a phone with a Snapdragon, it might run Netflix. But if you have your eye on a phone with a Hummingbird or Tegra 2, you could be out of luck.

I'll bump this, been using PlayOn for a couple of years now. Not the ideal solution, but there really isn't one. Don't bother with using Media Server, PlayOn has a dedicated app.
It lets you watch a LOT more than just Netflix (Hulu, direct channels, local media files) via transcoding. The streams/movies are sent to your PC, which then transcodes and distributes them.
It creates a DLNA share for viewing streams on your home devices ... it will also, via the new Android app, let you view all of these streams over 3G. I'm currently watching Onion News via PlayOn over 3G (ie, my PC downloaded it, my Android phone app is able to view it remotely).
For me, its a huge boon when traveling. It does have buffering problems at times but that is more because my DSL upstream from home is slower than 3G downloading speed.
^^ was gonna do something similar with a media server program, cant remember which but my isp upload limit is only 600kbps. someday when i have fios or other connection with symetrical upload and download this will be awesome but unfortunately that might be a while
I feel like the only person that cannot access my account. The program just closes after I click login. Im running the phoenix rom

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but it seemed to be the most appropriate... AFAIK Netflix streaming has never worked on a broadband connection on the island because they're identified as foreign or outside of the continental US or whatever. However, it seems that for Netflix's purpose, a Sprint connection from PR still looks like any other connection from within the US; probably because of the way it's routed. It's kinda odd considering other services like Google Voice can still make the distinction, but I'm sure there's dozens of way to do this filtering (for instance, Tivo also thinks my DVR is in the US if I tether it to my phone).
So what good is any of this knowledge? Well, the Netflix app will stream to your phone just fine over 3G; even tho it'll flash a region warning on wifi. I hear your now tho, what's the point of that? 3G streaming looks pretty bad, specially in areas with low signal where you're lucky to get 400 kbps...
Well, I'm not done, otherwise this post would be rather worthless wouldn't it? Open that oh-so-easily fooled Netflix app (seriously, it took them this long to release an app that merely discriminates amongst phones by build.prop?), start streaming over 3G, turn on Wifi, enjoy the improved quality as the phone starts to stream over Wifi without any location checks. That's all there is to it! I was able to pause and resume after switching to Wifi with no issues. I imagine it might get fixed eventually, or not, but for now it works.
I haven't tested to see if their site is just as easily fooled by a computer tethered to my phone, but since you can't handoff between different connections there quite as smoothly I guess it's kinda moot... I haven't been a Netflix subscriber for very long, just started testing it out. Frankly I'm kinda disappointed in their online catalog of movies and shows, over half the stuff I first searched for wasn't available (Mad Men, How I Met Your Mother, several movies, etc.).
Netflix on my Tivo also works if I tether it to my phone but that's a hassle (on the Tivo's end) and again, Sprint 3G really isn't fast enough for smooth playback, at least where I live (near Buchanan base). Can't wait until 4G is deployed here...
BTW Has anyone tested how Netflix app playback looks on a TV if you output it over HDMI with Full HDMI? I'll probably give it a shot later. Altho I might just drop Netflix and go back to renting off Redbox to be honest.
Workaround for Netflix block
I live in the USVI and we too are blocked from using Netflix. I posted a few articles on my blog though that explains how I've worked around this block:
How to use Netflix streaming, Amazon Instant Video and MP3 from outside the US
Installing DD-WRT mega Build on a Linksys E3000 Router to Run with HMA Pro! VPN Services
I hope these help! I've been happily streaming for quite a while now, it's great.
Sean
i would love using hdmi out with netflix!
Well I am from the south of the island and I can tell you with the latest release of it that pretty much shut down the Wifi idea tried it and did not stream at all but for those on the island I recommend an app called sensorly you can get it on the regular market it shows you where you get your signal on a map like Google maps it gives you all the signal ranges and ladies and gents they just recently started to test 4G in two areas only San Juan and ponce and to tell you that the app worked flawlessly is an understatement cause i drove from arroyo to ponce and once I reached the sprint store there I was able to get 4G when I walked into the store asked one of the CS reps and he said they are in the testing faze and once that is done they will do a roll-out with commercials and advertisements so good news for all us island folk so with netflix to be continued...
The netflix app hasn't been updated since I posted this, it should still work... You have to switch from 3G to Wifi once you're already streaming something.
One thing that I seem to be missing in the marketplace is apps that does live-streaming of video, the latest to be added to the list is the MLB app that has audio-streaming, but no video streaming of live games, so is it WP that doesn't support this, or is it the developers that doesn't want to?
Live streaming from or to the device? Otherwise there doesn't seem to be an issue with live streaming to the device. Considering a number of RDC's use similar features. No clue about streaming from the device though.
Stream to the device, take my MLB example: At Bat 12 for Android and IOS can show live gamestreams , but WP7 can not. (And the WP one is even more expensive, but that's another case). An then there is sites such as Ustream, justin.tv etc that doesn't seem to be available on the platform.
If I remember there was a 3rd part Ustream app, but watching livestreams didn't work.

What is the "live gamestreams"? If you mean "live sport game events": WP7 can perfectly stream live video; but seems like a content providers don't care much about WP7 support.
Yeah, livestreaming of games, thanks I guess we just have to put some preassure on the developers then.
I've been looking for an app that does this for me as well, mainly for gaming content. There are quite a few out there that seem to be able to stream live video content, like the RedBullTV app and I believe there's a Youtube Live app as well, so with my limited developing-knowledge, I don't see why it wouldn't be possible.
FlashVideo For WP7 has recently added support for several "Live Video" sites, mostly sports at the moment though. Not sure if this specific update has hit marketplace yet, but the changelog are up on his site. Can't link a source due to low post-count, but it can be found if you look up the app in the marketplace.
I've been briefly corresponding with the developer as well, asking if he would add support for justin/twitch.tv and own3d.tv, and I believe he would seriously look into it, but it seemed to something that would be added in the future because the sites "have many protections", in his own words.
Guys, as I've said before: technically it's very possible, not a big problem, live streaming are perfectly supported by WP7 (via MS Smooth Streaming technology etc.). The big problem is CONTENT. Nobody will develop app to play stolen content - for ethical reason or because app will be banned from the mp shortly. So direct your questions to your sports channel providers...

From what I gathered, OP was asking about live-streaming apps for WP7 in general and he also brought up both Ustream and Justin.tv in another post so I figured it was relevant to the discussion.
Is there any significant difference between "professional sport event live video streaming" and services like Ustream and Justin.tv? The latter have provided streams for sport and competitive events in the past as well, and continues to do so.
Nope, you are wrong. He wants to have "livestreaming of games". I don't watch games but I'm pretty sure there are no free live broadcasting of the Red Sox or Bruins games on Ustream and Justin.tv, for example.
P.S. 2 OP: you should mark your question as answered 'cause WP can handle live streams. Your second question "why I can't find app/service for that" is a different question
Fair enough! I guess this is what confused me...

Regardless, I guess it's a discussion for another thread. Thanks for your clarification regarding live streaming and WP7, it's something I've been wondering about as well!
And again, to OP, the developer for FlashVideo for WP7 has stated that he will add support for several "live sports streaming sites", I don't know if there is anything of interest to be found there but still worth a mention I feel.
By the way, as for temporary solution you may use Skype and broadcast live event yourself from the home PC equipped with video capturing board and connected to your cable box
As of today, you can now download HBO GO directly from the Google Play store on the Nexus Player! No more side loading and having to use a mouse / keyboard-track pad combo. I have tested it out already and it is working great so far!
I know this isn't a huge deal but it is much more convenient being able to download it on the playstore and use the original remote.
Awesome, can't wait til I get home to fire this up.

Unless I'm missing something, it appears HBO GO for Android TV is not supported by Comcast. Won't let me activate.
I found that it works much better on the NP than the AFTV. Just a smoother, quicker experience.
Now if we can just get WatchESPN I'll have everything I need.

Ouch! I did read that actually. For some reason, Comcast subscribers can not currently log into HBO Go on Android TV. I have no idea why either. Luckily I use my parents Dish Network / Netflix login for all of my app needs. (HBO GO, FX Now, Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS, etc etc) I pay $40 a month for 60mbps Internet from Charter and that is it. I will never subscribe to cable!
What on earth is going on with comcast again. So tiring of getting tangled up in a new controversy of theirs every month. Last month was the introduction of data caps, now android tv blocking. Can't comprehend how google allowed this. I am speculating we got in the middle of whatever animosity and rivalry they have with Sony. Playstation 3 as well exhibits same issue and doesnt allow activation of the hbogo app if comcast is the provider. I am thinking since sony comes with android tv, they ended up blacklisting the whole platform at its totality.
this also works on my razer forge but I had to sideload APK.
ps. anyone else just getting black screen when playing video/s ? audio works fine. HBO GO is only app that behaves this way.
Arstechnica had a good article on net neutrality with a link to FCC to post your complaints.

I'll be filing one for the hbo blocking across many different streaming devices.

Can confirm that: DNS solution doesn't work either, but the normal Android apk I sideloaded works as usual.
Regards to the comcast problem, Fire TV had the same issue initially where comcast was the hold out. They joined later on but not sure what made that happen.
as of 03/19/2016, comcast is still not allowing activation on nexus player / android tv for HBO GO or HBO NOW. unbelievable! I cant wait for Google Fiber to end the Comcast Xfinity Reign of Terror.
