Display quality? - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

Display quality on a touch screen phone is something that is very important to me because all interaction with the phone is on the display. In my opinion, the quality of the display is one of those factors that can make or break the experience of using a phone.
Apparently the display in the Honor 8 is different than the Huawei P9 so my questions is, how does the Honor 8 display quality compare to the P9?
My experience with an in-store P9 sample unit was that it has a very clear, crisp display with good color reproduction. The whites look very good, brightness was good and even though it only has a 1080p resolution, the pixels are nearly indiscernible. In general it seemed to be very impressive for an IPS LCD display.
Does the Honor 8 have an equally good display or is it noticeably inferior, albeit only slightly?

honor is a little better I think...
better only samsung s6/s7 mostly because resolution...

The best screen quality you can get on the market is from Samsung, i assume that your budget is limited, but you can find a decent Samsung's phone for a decent price.

Side by side you can notice the p9 has better colors than the honor 8. But overall in performance they are up to par.. But the p9 IS $100-$200 more than the honor 8.. I wouldn't spend two benjamins for a slighty better display The display on the honor 8 is more than sharp enough.

display is nice for the price tag, bt the display on the one plus3 and p9 is better.

I would not say the Oneplus 3 has a better display because it it 1080p and Amoled which is a very bad combination. It's not sharp. The screen on Honor 8 is good and has good color contrast. It also gets very bright and pretty easy to see in the sunlight. I have no complaints. I have not compared it to a P9 unfortunately.

Oneplus 3 has a pentile panel, which means not a true 1080p display

Yep yep. Pentile needs 1440p to look sharp above 5" or so.

You're right, but for the oneplus 3's is enough for me, no need to QuadHD unless it was a tablet

Just got the Honor 8, (great device overall) but I'm disappointed in the screen viewing angles, especially black get greyish, and other colors also lose their vibrancy. Comparing it to my old HTC M8 and Xperia X Compact, Honor 8's display is no match. That is, the viewing angles. Viewing the display from front it's a good display. I really hoped it would have Huawei p9's display.

I don't mind viewing angles, as long as it's a good display when I look at it directly

viewing angles are indeed a little problem with honor 8

I think they're using an older gen IPS display

i dont think its an olg gen IPS, considering the excellent color saturation on the display

Waiting for display mate review on honor 8

looking forward to it

367 ppi enough ??

Hi all, i want to buy this phone but i have one question. Is 367 ppi enough ? Is display sharp enough ? I have read many reviews and test...., in some reviews testers say that the resolution is absolute ok....., in another that is visible difference in sharpness when they compare the screen with higher ppi. What is your opinion ?? I have no chance to see the screen in shop. I want to buy this fone, but i´m worried about this thing. Thanx for answers
The screen is very good, excellent contrast and beatiful colors, for me is ok 367 ppi

I find it fine also. Crisp and clear. Easier on the battery.
A screen shot won't help you, lol. Think about that a minute.....

DPI <> PPI. PPI is the physical amount of pixels per inch, DPI is the amount of Dots per inch displayed by the OS.
This phone has a great display. I wouldn't worry about the relatively low PPI compared to newer phones.
I switched from a Samsung with over 440ppi and could barely notice any difference.
Sent from my HUAWEI MT7-L09 using Tapatalk
I have the Ascend Mate 7 from May and after seven months I am not satisfied.
However, regarding the display I must admit that the difference is unnoticeable with 400ppi or more but the problem is not the dpi. Let's view:
- The screen manufacture
I have a big halo in the center of the screen on white colors (It is getting more annoying).
I have a "light" lightbleed on blacks
I don't think that it's a true IPS because if I look it from different angles the screen colors change, especially the black colors
- The Android UI
We have 367ppi on 6" screen and the huawei stock rom is set to 480ppi, so Android will render the screen as it is a 480ppi display. Big status bar, big everything (but this is up to you, I prefer a small UI). To make matters worse for now is impossible to build a custom ROM that it is not stock-derivative (See my post here).

OP3 vs OP6 Display

So I've had the op3 since it's launch in 2016 and it's been a great phone that has slowly deteriorated in recent times in terms of battery life especially and I've become less impressed with it's display recently especially when I compared it to a Nokia 7 plus display which is 402 ppi and LCD,but I found the display noticably crisper on it compared to the op3
My op6 is on its way now and I'm hoping to see a good difference in the display.I see that the display for op6 is also 402 ppi compared to 401 on the op3.
The op3 display is okay but colors kind of look washed out at times and the blacks don't look that black, It's never sharp and crisp,
Has anyone compared the two and found a noticable difference, maybe the display has gotten better since the op5 ??
Supposedly the op6 has a surprisingly good display for only being 1080p.
I'm coming from a Galaxy S8 with a QHD screen and find the OP6 screen to be perfectly crisp and fine, loving it
I also came from a QHD Samsung. The OP6 display is great, despite the lower resolution.
One criticism of it would be the max brightness is hardly enough outdoors. Just a little brighter would help. Samsung was much brighter, but I've never seen a OP3 to compare with. Otherwise, the OP6 display is nice.
I compared them both side-by-side.. Not a lot of difference in terms of sharpness.. Better color reproduction on op6.. Whites are more pronounced,a bit brighter too.
I'm coming from a 3t and I was surprised by how big of a difference there is, somehow op6 screen looks much sharper
Samsung and apple before going QHD (or "retina"): "That's just a meme no one actually needs that!"
Them now: "Everyone else's phone sucks ass we have way more pixels than them lolololololol!"
It's decent 1080p, great depending on what phone you coming from. Not usable on bright sunny days. Been a week and eyes still trying to adjust.
Perfer my note 8 screen. Night and day. Take 30minutes less of sot.

I came from OnePlus 3t and the difference was unbelievable , brightness in daylight is much better, lower brightness at night is more achievable and the biggest difference I found between the 2 when put next to each other is the whites. After 1.5 year the 3T gives a yellowish white while the 6 gives a true white color

Sounds promising, looking forward to comparing to my op3 when my six finally arrives this week.I do notice the yellowy, gray whites on the op3
Got my op6 this morning, don't see any great difference in display,so far not really impressed with the phone at all, pretty much the same as op3 with faster processor

That's great to hear. I've had to pay for a VERY expensive screen replacement on my S8 because there were no tempered glass protectors available. I just cannot bear to use a naked screen for fear of micro scratches.
My OP6 will be delivered tomorrow.
I have a request to make. How does netflix and prime video play on the OP6? does it play in HD ? The 5T had problems playing HD content when it released and none of the reviews of the 6 ive seen talk about that.

How can you say its the same phone with another SoC?

Yes,all this is true,I was referring more to the display,it's pretty much the same as the op3,the user experience also, I notice zero improvement in speed, although I know there is, battery is pretty much the same for me so far too, saying all that though I'm still happy because I know OnePlus will continue to optimize
Have the op6 over a week now and the display is definitely better somewhat than the op3.
Do think that content has a lot to do with it,hd images look much more crisp than ones with standard definition.
For example the OnePlus stock wallpapers don't look that great and are washed out,but if I use wallpapers from apps like backgrounds and Zedge they look amazing
I also came from OP3. The display on OP6 is much much better. OP6 screen is better outdoor compare to the 3.
The OP6 is very fluid.
I am actually dissapointed with OP 6 display to the point I am thinking of selling the phone. What bothers me the most is the PWM brighteness regulation bellow 25% witch such a low frequency. But I read it is common for all OLEDs so if you were happy with OP 3 you will be with this one.

This.
I also came from OP3. Compared the display side by side, and to be honest, there is barely a difference. The biggest difference is that the OP6 is better in daylight. I would say the display picture quality has not moved much since the 2016.
The biggest difference for me was the battery life. I simply love it.

A meme? you mean a gimmick? Lol

Clarity/resolution

The OnePlus 6T has a crazy crisp display. Just kidding, this is automated text so who knows if this screen is any good. So, you be the judge! A higher rating indicates that it's extremely sharp and clear, and that you cannot see pixels with your naked eye.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Screen is nice, but isn't as clear as I've seen on other phones. However, I think that could be because of the screen protector.
Amoled it may be, but left side of screen brighter than right..
Couldn't 'unsee' it, mainly on the normal gray and solid colours.
May be pressure related, as the trend seems to be to box phone with screen pushed against lid.
Don't have time to run gambit of similar happening, shame.
It's definitely good display with nice colors and all but not very crisp and sharp compared to 2k LCD displays. After some checking recently I think the resolution may not be at fault. It's the pentile matrix for AMOLED displays. I checked Pixel 3 and Samsung S9 and they are also not as sharp as the LCD phones I had previously (HTC 10 and U11). It's really obvious and noticable for me while reading text. I hope Samsung can do something about it in the near future.

Screen is more than "good enough" ... but not as good as my Galaxy S8.
Well, you can't beat them all ... the S8 is (of course) slower and has tons more bloatware.
Well, in my opinion the display is brilliant and detailed but...there is a big "but": at the upper corners, the curves are not well defined and clean and the images seem grainy especially with light colors.
I don't know how to describe it but when comparing with my Moto x from 2015, this display isn't as 'crisp'. The Moto x has 2K resolution, maybe that's the reason? Still, I'm not unhappy overall. The ease-of-use and snappiness of the system I think makes up for the shortcomings overall

Is the OLED using Pentile or RGB subpixel?

Does anyone know? There is a big difference especially if the screen is bigger and the resolution is not quad HD. If you do not know how to tell them apart, just google pentile vs rgb

EDIT: Answer found, Pentile display for Honor Note 10
Debatable. This is a big screen phone not the typical 5.5 inch ones back in the day. I still want to know if this is rgb or not. I have a mi max 3 and the screen is pretty good
It is almost sure pen tile. As I know, only tab s and tab s2 hase pure rgb matrix... I had and have both tabs. And had at least 15 different phones, also flagships between them, wirh pentile
Picture quality is night and day... You can never get that accuracy of colors in pen tile.

Everyone knows that from the spec sheet. I'm talking about the subpixel arrangement. RGB vs pentile diamond layout. It makes a difference on a big display

Before I made this thread I did that, no answer can be found. I'm trusting the owners of this phone on this site to help find the answer.
Answer found. Pentile display said by Frankie Tech. He says it in his video around the 8:17 mark. He said Honor 8X LCD is sharper than Honor Note 10
Hi,
Me, I have the device for a few hours, and I must say that I find the display really good.
I even tried to downgrade it to lower resolution and it still looks good with no real difference in sharpness. Now, I am almost 50 years old and so maybe my eyes are fooling me... so don't trust this too much. But I'm pretty sure that for "daily use" it is more the enough.
There's one thing that bothers me though : it is that slightly blueish tint it's getting when viewed at about 20°C vision angle. Not as bad as on earlier LG displays, but still there. Noticeable only on white backgrounds It's common "disease" for OLED/AMOLED displays.
Anyways, how can I say it's pentile or RGB ? The link provided explains the difference but doesn't say how to check does it ?
Regards.

It's easy to tell by experience at looking at screens especially on a big screen even on a 5.5 inch screen I can tell the difference/ Oneplus owners have complained about their displays being not as sharp too because they use 1080p pentile displays now imagine this on an even bigger screen like the Honor Note10, 8X and 20X.
The one method to use is to drop bits of water on a screen displaying text and use a magnifying glass then you can examine the subpixel arrangement to determine if it's pentile or rgb. Smaller drops of water magnify the pixel more and largers drops magnify less
This is example is a RG/BW LCD which is also blurry. Notice how this display has the blue in a diamond pattern similar to a Pentile layout. This makes text and edges of icons and pictures and finer detail look blurry.

A traditional RGB LCD has all the colors in a straight line
https://www.phonescoop.com/img/g/489_9cdf1622caf8656bee9d377123e7817f.jpg
I'm fine with pentile on a 2560x1440 or higher display but not on anything lower as it's noticeable
These are pictures of my mi max 3 6.9 inch lcd display. Rgb layout, red blue green all in a straight vertical line. One of the reasons why I picked the max 3 over the note 10 was the display sharpness and accurate color reproduction.

V30

Now that my view 20 has got Android 10, it has got even better but that new View 30 looks amazing.
Anyone going to upgrade to the view 30?
Not me as v20 is still a solid performer. Probably will stay with this for another few months before i plan. Also, lets see about the global launch due to ban thing [emoji19], so no clarity over it yet.

LCDs can't display true black, whereas the improved contrast ratio of an OLED make it much easier on the eyes, especially when viewing at night. OLEDs also tend to be easier to read under bright sunlight as well as saving some battery compared to LCDs. While it's possible to have an always-on display for both OLEDs and LCDs, it will consume far more battery power on an LCD than an OLED.

LCDs are brighter, white looks better on LCDs, colour saturation and colors looking more true-to-life or another strength of LCD, LCD screens also save moneyand most of all LCD screens don't have burn in as bad as OLED screens.
Both have their advantages and disadvantages

Still waiting for android 10 on my device. ?
I am disappointed because of the v20 alternative roms non support.
No kernel sources, no bootloader unlock, no custom roms.
I love the hardware and the debloated rom is ok.
But instead of a v30 I will seek for a more open device like mi 9t pro or OnePlus ...
