International S7, T-Mobile's wifi calling and VOLTE, and custom ROMs - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

I'm about to pull the trigger on buying the S7 and (thanks to this forum) have researched the (T-mobile) "carrier" version with SnapDragon processor vs. the International non-carrier version with Exynos processor. Seems like the latter is generally preferred, with 2 drawbacks:
1) Not compatible with T-Mobile's wifi calling;
2) No VOLTE
My only remaining questions are:
1) It seems as though with most unlocked / non-carrier smartphone models, custom ROMs are usually made available that enable carrier-specific features, but it seems like no such ROMs have yet been developed and widely circulated to enable T-Mobile's wifi calling or VOLTE. Is it typically just a matter of WHEN, rather than IF, such ROMs usually get into circulation? IOW, even though I'll be without those features on the Exynos S7 for now, can I buy the phone with confidence that in the not too distant future there SHOULD be a ROM to enable these? (Wifi calling is actually rather important to me since my gf's apt is a dead zone.)
2) Can someone ELI5 VOLTE to me? I'm still note entirely sure what it is / does, and want to evaluate how much I should care if my Exynos S7 doesn't support this...

Exynos does support volte. I am using it and it works fine.

T-Mobile volte and wifi calling appears to be working with this csc

Have both working on my g930f.

Would you mind explaining how you got it working? Did you have to do anything other than change your CSC? I changed my CSC to T-Mobile US and I now have the option to enable wifi calling, however when I turn it on it just hangs there saying 'Enabling'.

Did you change it with that CSC changer v1.7?
That is really all I did. Install n7 rom then change CSC to TMB.

Yep that's what I used. I did a clean install of the SuperMan rom and used CSC changer again...same issue, it hangs at Enabling. Even went back to stock rom and it does the same thing.
Finally, I installed the Note 7 OnTheEdge rom like you said and it appears to be working, I now see the wifi calling notification at the top left and I get the volte icon when i'm not connected to wifi. I wonder if anyone has been able to get it to work on other roms?

I've only tried it on n7rom mentioned above. Guess it has to do with the rom since not working in Superman rom.

It works now. I do super man rom. Search that thread how to do it. You have to flash zto csc then boot then flash TMB csc. Then Switch a couple toggles.

[R&D] Porting G925F or any (version) Roms to Sprint.

Hello (I have nothing)
This is to discuss Sprint porting with data/ Introducing myself/ A few questions
Please don't reject this (my) project. I will reject my project if I find out it's impossible or absolutely not worth it.. Please also don't tell me to just do it, I would need more research time.
Of course this would be great. Any request for Sprint support posted in other models Rom sections get rejected quickly. But it's been done. Not with this phone, but anyway...
About me:
I had built an AOSP Rom for A Virgin Mobile HTC Desire 816.. And coded A few Apps, so I know A bit around the Android system. Different hardware, I know. With that phone I could just flash A universal APN fix that fixed mobile network when using any rom for any world model. There are close to 20 or more variants. I'd like to create A flashable fix like this. Virgin Mobile uses the Sprint Network.
I have A github (same username), and A fast ((can use over 500GB RAM!)) Microsoft Azure remote server (Ubuntu Server, Windows, free for me) which I use for development which I may be able to "donate" access to for A few people.
I'm new to Knox systems
A few questions:
It's really that secure?!?! I can't even directly "sudo" in A rooted Linux install on the S6 edge. I've been searching the internet everyday for A Samsung Pay workaround/alternative use for the magstripe. But I highly doubt Samsung will open an SDK/API for the Magstripe.
This is possible right, simple porting procedure? Though I've been unsucessful with porting since Lollipop.
You can flash and boot apparently any rom for an S6 using A sprint kernel as well. Just it doesn't know what the SIM card is.
I would like to link porting resourses such as [Guides] from the Galaxy S5, S4 for reference.
For now I will check on gsmarena.com for the supported bands and whether they are GSM/CDMA of the different models.
Anyone working on this, knows what to change, or has more resources than incompatible guides please let me know. If there's any enthusiasts on this subject.
Not much is happening with the S6 not even with AOSP teams. I see that all the news was the way to go and NOT root it because people want Samsung Pay.
I've actually tried flashing a G925F rom. It booted etc. But it showed baseband unknown so I changed some system files etc. but it still shows baseband unknown. All other things were working perfectly.
There isn't a whole lot involved in porting for the s6. But From what I understand, the issue with porting to sprint is with how many files sprint has places carrier specific files into. I was planning to do a port from sprint to other carriers for Dazed and I after full oh1 builds are completed.

Actually the real problem is reading sprint period with the s6..will not read anything sprint whatsoever
Modem, data, efs, iccid anything. Ive been porting roms for sometime. Not happening here

I had taken advice from A site which I was sure would work, but didn't.
Backup partitions efs, modem, carrier, everything that seemed to be storing "carrier stuff" to restore IMEI. Then restored the partitions in the G925F ROM. Using TWRP and the Partitions Backup app by wanam.
Interesting that when flashing Sprint ROMs that are based on A previous build/baseband version, the latest OH1 baseband version shows within those roms.
When using global s6 roms, baseband version shows whatever that rom is for.
Any files in the system noticable that are required to replace? Then change where the port rom looks.
Also the sprint basebands are in OTA's. I'll check those out by comparing update tars. Maybe they're found more easily.
But when flashing G9250 roms (Hong Kong/China) basebands shows and it works fine except making calls (can't talk or hear the person).

did LTE work?
I live in europe so the sprint s6 bands are not supported but I think it will support 4g/lte in the usa.

You were saying the Europe S6 is similar to the China version?
I had starting looking for Hong Kong Roms to flash to my Sprint one. Lol.
A quick search showed that the European model is the G295F, or at least similar. No?
Apparently no bands are the same accept us cdma carriers https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks
No, I mean the sprint g925p is similair to the g9250 from china. If you flash a g9250 rom it'll find the baseband etc. And no the g925f is not similair to the g925p nor the g9250.
Why doesn't' someone contact a developer like @AntaresOne or @Alucard24. @AntaresOne is the maintainer for International CM 12.1 on the Galaxy S4. He is also the developer of the Optimized CM 12.1 builds. The optimized builds run on any carrier variant of the S4. One ROM, all variants! @Alucard24 is the kernel developer for same. They would both have tremendous knowledge into carrier independence.
I know AOSP, but should be useful.
I had gotten no futher on this.
The steps I had taken were moving any Sprint CSC files into other roms, as well as following porting guides dealing with gsm->cdma porting, and the other way of moving system apps/files from other roms into Renegade ending up with force closes or not booting.
Also A popular kernel for those Roms, Arter kernel had become less and less likely to work. It booted with no data at first, now it doesn't boot.
Sorry that was just A lot of file picking and I'm not good with xml and everything else.

Galaxy A8 VoLTE and VoWiFi features on the USA T-Mobile network

Folks,
I have Galaxy A8 UAE version in the USA with MNVO SIM-card which is working on T-Mobile network. Of course VoLTE and VoWiFi features are unavailable on my A8 because it has wrong CSC (which is XSG). As I understand I need to change CSC code to add the features to my phone. But... as Galaxy A8 is not released in the USA there are no A8 ROM with CSC appliacble for the US. I'm wondering if there are any other ways to change CSC to one which will work with T-Mobile VoLTE (my previous Nokia 6 US-version had both features working fine with the same MNVO SIM). Could someone help me with that?
Follow the directions it works
Unfortunately this has stopped working.

Get Tmobile VoLTE on SM-G955F ?

Quick question.
Have a Exynos Unlocked S8 Plus from awhile back. In the past there were modified CSC 's we could flash that ported T-Mobile features such as VoLTE and WiFi calling onto the device even though its an international device. Is that still possible on Android 9.0 or Pie if I update the device ? It is rooted and has TWRP installed.
Since T-Mobile is deactivating a lot of their 2G and 3G networks. VoLTE is increasingly important. Let me know. Thanks!

Conversion from SM-N986W to SM-N986U/U1: Still possible?

Hi guys, quick question... My good old Note 9 (Canadian variant: SM-N960W) is flashed with an unlocked/unbranded US firmware (SM-960U1), and everything's working flawlessly (Wi-Fi calling, VoLTE, OTA updates, etc.). The main reason I did it: Canadian carriers are useless morons, they take weeks/months to release updates, and I've been more than happy with the quick updates I get with the US firmware installed.
I would like to do the same with my Canadian Note 20 Ultra I will receive Friday, but I want to make sure it's still possible, with "Odin Patched", to flash a firmware from a different region on the Note 20 Ultra.
Someone on XDA did it? Did it go well, and did it break something?
Many thanks

Thanks for the heads-up, I didn't thought about 5G, but glad to hear it's still possible to do it (flash a firmware from a different region) without bricking the device. I'll probably pick faster updates over 5G for now, considering I live in the middle of nowhere and have access to LTE only anyway
I have a Rogers Note 20 Ultra, I will wait for the updates because here in this part of Ontario, has 5G for whatever reason. I really enjoy streaming Xbox games from the cloud. Almost no delay.
You should be able to flash U or U1 firmware using patched Odin. Just make sure if you have a carrier locked version (not sure if thats a thing in Canada) to have it SIM unlocked before flashing anything, especially if you plan on changing carriers ever. After going to U1 firmware, you can access the service mode menus to enable bands for LTE, NR 5G and DSS. Canada uses 5G bands n38, n66 and n71 and DSS. The only band I don't see available in the US firmware is n38, although it may be available under another CSC like WWD or GCF. I have included a screenshot of the bands I've enabled under the Verizon CSC.
Has anyone with an N986W been able to flash the U1 firmware yet?
Has anyone tried it already? if its possible to flash SM-N986W to U or U1

This can be fixed by flashing the home_CSC file of your carrier and then there are many other ways to fix this. So take this information lightly.

What he said :good:. Also you would be able to get on Beta on which a lot of 5G things were fixed / enabled so in fact that might work for you.
Only things i would want you to check before flashing the US firmware is:
1. Is it a dual sim phone? If No you are good.
2. Do you have E-sim Capability enabled? If No you are good.
3. What variant is your phone ? If Snapdragon you are good.
ohh if you are flashing US firmware flash the U1, no need to flash U firmware. Do check if you are sim unlocked because in case you are not and in future you want to sim unlock your device you will have to be on Carrier Firmware, if you plan to stay with your carrier for a long long time and or if you are sim unlocked this should not be of a concern.

Just as a heads up for future reference all Canadian new phone since December 2018 are Sim unlocked
For anyone still wanting to convert their N986W to US unlocked N986U1 I just wanted to say its possible. I used modified Odin and put the U1 firmware on my N986W. I was then able to install the 3 beta's. After a couple of days I switched back to the Canadian firmware. So for anyone wanting to try it, you should be good to go.

Hello,
I have a n986w (freedom locked) and i was wondering does every band work with u1? Or do we have to manually enable bands from service mode? And if i may ask where did you find modified odin and u1 firmware? And why did you roll back? I am still new to samsung phones, i had my fair share of modding android in past but sammy does thing bit differently so i am but confused about everything

Your N986W with freedom is probably not sim locked. I know mine isn't and someone earlier in the thread said that phones in Canada aren't sim locked anymore. So you should be able to proceed. When I switched to the U1 firmware I was receiving LTE signal on freedom. I did not test any other bands as I was just in my living room. There is a guide here on xda regarding enabling all the bands and there is a link to it from the thread I followed in order to switch to the U1 firmware. The link to modified Odin and U1 firmware is also in the same thread. The thread OP is warriorvibhu and its about switching from U to U1 firmware but you can follow it just the same and you can find that thread and the thread for sideloading the beta in the Guides, News and Discussion section. Sorry I couldn't add a link for you I have limited time right now. I rolled back because I just wanted to see if it could be done or not. The instructions were straightforward. Good luck and enjoy.

Sorry I couldn't add a link for you I have limited time right now. I rolled back because I just wanted to see if it could be done or not. The instructions were straightforward. Good luck and enjoy.

Yes my phone is not sim locked. it is in fact unlocked. Does this trip knox? and will I receive OTA updates after I switch to Oneui 3.0? or will I have to manually flash beta otas?

It did not trip knox as its official firmware. You will have to manually flash the betas. Also, when you get the U1 firmware, make sure that you download the one ending in ATID. That is the one required for the beta. I read both the guide for the beta flashing and the guide for flashing the U1 firmware before I proceeded. Also make sure you remove sim card b4 flashing U1. Have sim in when sideloading the betas and be careful you don't accidentally take an update between U1 and beta or you will have to re-flash ATID.

I'm going to try this! Would you link me to where I need to download everything? Will test if 5G will still work or not. I am with Rogers in a 5G area. But is it even worth it to use as a daily?

Reflash AT&T 20 Ultra to Unlocked Firmware?

I've looked through threads of people doing the reverse of this. It's been a few years since I've had an android and was running nexus devices then. What's the process to flash an unlocked firmware on an AT&T locked 968U to the 968U1 firmware (assuming there aren't issues doing it)?
Are there any other pitfalls I need to be aware of prior to doing it other than the wifi calling?
If this is already posted somewhere else, please feel free to point me there. I didn't see any info about going from a carrier locked 968U to unlocked firmware.
Thanks in advance.

I just did this today went from TMB locked one to unlocked (For a family member) mine is unlocked. All went well no problems at all. Just download the U1 Firmware you want to flash and for CSC use home_csc (In ODin) so you can keep your data and probably the wifi calling feature too ( i did that all features are intact). Use the Odin and firmware from Ota and non Ota thread . Enjoy

What did you gain that made it worth it for you? Also, I'm on a Locked ATT/Firstnet Ultra and am wondering if flashing to an Unlocked Firmware would give me more control of my device.

If your on FirstNet I recommend that you stay on ATT branded software, I'm not sure if band 14 will work properly for you if you are on unlocked software. Thank you for your service!

You can get VoLTE back, but yeah, WiFi calling is not gonna happen.

The thread is for T-Mobile, but most of it works with AT&T devices as well.

I flashed the U1 firmware (ATJ3) onto my AT&T Note Ultra, then flashed the Home CSC from the AT&T U firmware. I have VoLTE and WiFi calling.
Help!
Hello all, I have a Note 20 Ultra 5g that is unlocked and I'm looking to flash the original ATT firmware for this device.
Having this unlocked version on Firstnet has been nothing but problems and I don't have access to band 14 or wifi calling.
I see this thread is a little old but if anyone could help me out or send me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it!
I have rooted some of my older phones several several years ago so I think I could pick this back up pretty quickly. I know over the years things seem to get easier and have probably changed quite a bit since I've last done something like this.
Thanks in advance!

My comment was made before we were able to change IMS settings directly.
You can get it all now. VoLTE, WiFI Calling, RCS, Video calling...

AT&T hasn't released any "official" firmware for the Note 20 series.
Since Samsung firmware is multi CSC, just flash any firmware with the same build number as the AT&T variant and use your AT&T SIM card.
Go to this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/ota-and-non-ota-firmware-for-n986u-and-n986u1.4143833/
Make sure you know what device you have, U or U1. Then grab the appropriate version.
Fir AT&T U devices, N986USQU2DUCA or N986USQU2DUCA will work.
For AT&T U1 devices, N986U1UEU2DUCB is the most recent version.
