Searching for ROM with SultanXDA's HAL, but not his ROM - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are there any ROMs with SultanXDA's custom camera HAL? I can't use his ROM because it causes a ring/halo/vignette around the edges of the screen and I'm afraid that it will cause permanent damage to my phone. I've tried ROMs such as jgcaap's CM13, but the camera was very noisy in Snapchat, Darkobas, but it stutters a lot and I haven't had the greatest battery life.
Essentially; do you know of any ROMs that have:
-great battery
-great camera
-smooth performance/experience
-stable
Thank you for any replies!

Sultan's HAL only works in his ROM or Darkobass (I'm not sure). Maybe first you should find a way to fix that error in your screen.
Anyway I think jgcaap's ROMs uses some Sultan's improvements at the camera HAL.
Nevertheless, Snapchat camera is really bad, maybe a little more in jgcaap's ROM, but **** anyways.

Thanks for the reply, I've searched for hours for a fix for the screen but I found nothing. As I said, jgcaap's ROM's camera is intolerable in Snapchat. I guess I'll have to stick to CM 13 nightlies for now

I guess there can't be camera hal from Sultan without that screen bug. Screen bug is caused by CAF stuff and Sultan's camera hal needs it.

How about the ROM I maintain? It uses Sultans kernel and modifiied HALs for media, audio ,display. and camera.

The only ROM that appeared to not have the screen bug was Darkobas, but that was very buggy for me to the point of not being usable (bugs being very stuttery, poor battery life, apps [and phone in general] freezing up at random). I guess I'll just have to deal with the bad camera for now

Either bad (but not as bad) camera, or bad screen... choice is yours. That CAF stuff makes screen unusable.

[Q] Looking for a new ROM - non-Sense

Currently, am on the CM10.1 unofficial nightlies and not too happy with the screen tearing, the battery drain and some other issues with the mic and sound they are having. Not to mention the DMCA bullsh!t that is currently going on. Was a fantastic rom while xkonni was involved in the development but after the take down sh!t it seems to be getting worse and worse.
I am in search of a new lightweight ROM that is as close to vanilla android as possible.
I have seen ChaOS, Liquid and a couple others and they all look good. But how is there battery, and support from the devs?
My main requirements:
No video/volume issues (ie. tearing)
Long battery life
Simple and clean
**No Sense UI**
Official nightlies
Other than that, I don't care about the special camera apps, just need it to take pics and record video, i don't use WiFi calling that often if at all and the rest is just stuff I hardly use.

Try Codename Lungo. A very lightweighted rom.
My current favorite non sense rom is Chameleon http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2222873
Worth a look. Nightlies almost every night ( if that makes sense)

RIP CM14.1.1. What is the next best ROM?

I tend to hang on to my every phone for long, and when it's time to upgrade, I just like to slap updated ROM onto it and keep it a bit more. Problem is, It's been years since I stopped playing around with now ancient HTC Desire, so I'm all new to this ROM development jargon... again. And it wasn't like I grasped it fully before.
Anyway, CM is dead, and that was always my choice for Custom ROMs. Stock looking, feeling and performing, with just a few little touches to make ti more usable. Like the profiles that become active on different triggers.
So, now I wonder...
What is the best 7.1.1. ROM for Nexus 5, and by that I mean: good battery, performance, and stock look?
Does recovery play a huge role in it?
What about the kernel?
Anything else that I'm missing?
Youre talking about stock? Fake nexus rom.
I guess the only real stock is AOSP. Right?
Other than that, there are ones that look like stock, and those that are heavily skinned with Comic Sans fonts, weird color schemes and whatnot.
I loved CM for looking like stock, and having a few extra options that don't radically change the way it works.
I'll check FakeNexus ROM. Thanks!
Yes, AOSP is stock.
I personally use the AOSP Nougat ROM by Santhosh with blu_spark kernel and it's giving great performance and battery life.
This ROM is AOSP with some little features added like doube tap to sleep, volume rocker wake and night light
Even the green flickering issue by recorded videos is solved in the latest build in this ROM.

Yes, it is stable enough for daily use: celluar data, wifi, bluetooth, location, hotspot, great performance and battery life, ...
Everything works well on this ROM.
Google Camera v3.2 takes good pictures & HDR works too on v3.2. I can record videos in 1080p without stuttering and green flickering. Pictures and videos looks sharp and clear.
For me, it's like an official update from Google

Any changelog with those roms ? Is there any difference between those and RR/LOS ?
I will try the latest Mokee in a few hours and get back to you. Hopefully it's derived from the latest LOS source so it has good battery and stability, but we'll see.

Looking forward to your review!
Hands on Mokee 7.1.2 31/8
We are getting closer to a bug free experience! The main issue I have with Mokee is that there is no display calibration built in. It's kind of standard these days and in all other Nougat roms. Still, I just had to download FK Manager and root the device to be able to calibrate the display. Other than that I also feel there are a few bloat apps, for instance Substratum and Xposed. I have nothing against the apps per say, but I don't use them. Thankfully they can be inactivated even without root. The only other issue I've found is that the compass is totally whack still, but I'm sure it'll be fixed soon.
I've only tested the rom for about half a day, but battery seems to be very good. Up to par with at least LOS 28/8 and not far from MIUI standards. The phone hasn't even gotten hot under the time I've tested the rom.
About performance, I got 60199 points in Antutu which seems very good for a beta rom. Other than surfing the web and recording videos I really don't do that many demanding tasks, but the whole experience is fluid as far as I can tell.
The stock camera seems to finally be fixed... again. In RR 10/8 camera worked fine, but then in LOS 28/8 videos were very dark and had a lot of artifacts. In Mokee 31/8 I really can't complain about image or video quality, it's great actually. A bit better than MIUI in my opinion
The stock camera still has the same issues, dark video recording at least. I will use Bacon Camera until it's fixed.
I can't comment on the issues people have with finger prints and if the issue has been fixed or not. I can only say that it's working perfectly fine for me.
I will stay on Mokee 31/8 for the time being. It's very close to a stock Android experience when all the bloat is inactivated. I would love some more features and settings to play around with, but I prefer a fully working rom over all the bells and whistles. It's without a doubt a daily driver, unless you really need a working compass!
Update 2017-09-02
After more than a full days of use I got pretty tired of Mokee. Still not a bad rom per say, but there seems to be some issues with deep sleep. Left it with over 70% battery during the night, when I woke up around six hours later it was down to around 50%. I'm not sure why and to be honest I really don't have the time to work it out. Instead I'm back on LOS 28/8 for the time being. I will keep an eye on Mokee and every other Nougat rom coming out since we're so close to having a fully working and bug free rom!
Anyone tested flyme os yet?

My favourite setup is Pixel Experience CAF + it's stock kernel, with Servicely from Franco running to prevent wakelocks from social apps. The phone lasts two days with normal usage. Lasts a whole day with 7/8h SOT. The stock kernel is perfect, better battery than Smurf, faster than Blu.Spark, really half-way between those two kernels.
I like OOS 9.0.4 with Smurf too, or OmniRom.
But i love the Pixel 3 feel of PE. Smooth as hell, even more than OOS. On top of that it has Pixel 3 AOD, integrated with the official live wallpapers, Now Playing, Digital Wellbeing, Google Pay, Pie Gestures (which are very fluid and cool to use, unlike on OOS where they are kinda broken and unresponsive, and you can still disable them), everything works like a charm. It also has a system-wide dark mode.
RAM management is also much better than OOS, and you can remap the Alert Slider positions (I set Do Not Disturb on the top position, much better than Silence), and set vibration strengh for calls, notifications, and system.
It's not a ROM that offers tons of customizations though, apart from what i wrote above. But it's polished, super fast, and has very good battery backup.

Dash Charging works like it should, and for the camera, i'm using this port of GCam (beta 20 build) : https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-xtrme/
Everything works including SlowMo, Portrait, Photosphere ... And quality is on par with OOS in lit conditions, but way better in low light. The app is especially snappy and responsive. That's not related to the ROM though, it's mostly thanks to this amazing GCam port. Best i found so far.

No problem ! Remember, this is a CAF build. So you have to Format your whole storage (not just Factory Reset) for it to boot for the first time.
It's a Security Patch issue commom to current CAF ROMs, you have to remove encryption to boot the first time. And the only way is to Format the internal storage.

Stands for "Code Aurora Forums". Basically, it's an AOSP branch maintained by Qualcomm. ROMs built on it (Like LineageOS for example) instead of pure AOSP are optimized with specific code from Qualcomm, so normally run faster and more efficiently on Snapdragon processors.
It's not a new thing, but the more you know !
Comparing the AOSP builds and the new CAF build of Pixel Experience, it is indeed faster and more responsive. Very neat.
But currently, most custom kernels aren't compatible with CAF ROMs (from what i've read anyway, haven't tried myself yet). So you won't be able to use Smurf on CAF ROMs (except if that changed haha).

Auto brightness learns your preferences so it will adapt. When it's too low, turn it up a bit, it will remember. But i never thought it was too dim.
You also have a "High Brightness mode" accessible through a quick setting in the status bar that boosts the brightness. But don't use it for more than a few minutes, it could damage the display. It gets brighter that what OnePlus intended.

Havoc is a good choice !
I just updated to the latest GCam Stable, the 1.4, in red on this page :
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/
Added the OP6 config file that you can download with it, Motion Photos work in Google Photos.
This build is even better that the one I linked previously, try it !
It even has Focus Tracking, which recognizes objects and keeps the focus on them when they move, it's amazing

Thanks you ! It's a little better, but not have 3 seconds of gif, only 1 second. On my OnePlus 3 with Android 8 i get a longer motion photo, on google website they talk about 3 seconds for Motion photo.

Ok thank you, i think we cannot get better for now. I find this strange because, i see many people want TopShot feature, but with a 1 second gif, i find it not very useful.

Which Pie ROM works without gapps and has best battery life and enough customization?

Which Pie ROM works without gapps without issues, has best battery life, enough customization options (especially clock on right, no need really that much, also moving cursor with volume button)? I need definitely good Bluetooth connection to Amazfit Bip for notifications and it should be stable ROM as daily driver with good battery life.
I don't care much about performance (if it will be 10-30% slower than fastest ROMs), I don't care about VoLTE/VoWifi, even NFC or fingerprint it is not really necessary, play zero games, what I need it is reliable Bluetooth notifications, apps not crashing (browser, calendar, email, Reddit) and it would be great if gcam or MIUI ported camera or whatever has best results worked without issues (but I don't need slowmo video, night sight, zoom and other gimmicks), what I need in camera it is regular photos with fastest focus to take not blurry photos of children.
Currently in 72hrs waiting period according xiaomi unlock tool.
edit: and yes I am aware of https://download.lineage.microg.org/polaris/ but would still prefer no gapps including no substitutes, not using them for years and not missing

no freezing, random reboots etc? because I experienced reboots when entering into doze on Redmi note 3 pro with nitrogen pie without gapps and other users said it's common on pie without gapps, so not sure if it's device specific
how is the camera quality compared to MIUI? I care only about regular photos without AI, auto HDR would be nice, I need fast focus and shoot
I haven't tried without Gapps, but LOS is commonly used without them, so I expect it to be fine. The AnX camera is the same as the original MIUI cam. The only thing it cannot do is capture QR codes afaik. I actually use Gcam for photos because I think it gives even better results. Video on AnX is better.
thanks, will give them both try, just finishing setting up LOS16, everything went surprisingly smooth without any issue, bootloader unlock took only 72 hours
