just received an update today for my verizon note 5. so far ive only noticed a change in the gallery app. thoughts??? are you going to update?
Honestly I don't like the newer gallery.
I never use the built-in gallery unless it's to interact with just taken pictures before using another app to organize them competently.
Is that the only change besides a newer security patch? The update isn't out yet for the Verizon Software Upgrade Assistant app yet, which is the only way an MVNO user can get these incremental security updates.
I've noticed the wallpapers have been changed, disabling theme store and theme setting does not keep paid/trial themes set, I also noticed a Google option in the settings menu, but it could have been there for awhile, and animations seem smoother for me
Looks like the update is finally available on the Software Upgrade Assistant application. Will update and report back anything I can add to this discussion.
EDIT: Installing the update now, will be doing a factory reset and fresh install to eliminate any issues since I use PackageDisabler Pro.
EDIT 2: Can't really find any differences besides maybe the gallery, which I wasn't all that familiar with initially anyways. Phone seems the same animations/speed wise. Security patch is at August 1. Still has the same bouts of random lag with Chrome tab-switching, and long pressing the home screen and apps in the app drawer can bring visual choppiness to the UI still. Phone does seem to run better without disabling any apps though, CPU usage seems light with the bloatware that is installed from the get-go.
EDIT 3: Battery life is definitely improved. Have 2.5 hours SOT with 1.5 of that Star Wars Heroes and just now hit 50%.
Updated yesterday, been running about 26 hours! Animations are noticeably smoother! Battery life seems better also!
Unplugged the phone at midnight when fully charged, looked at 4am, 99%. Very nice, used to lose roughly 1% an hour.
Any official release notes mention improvements to standby battery drain on this update?
Anyone having issues making and receiving calls or sending messages after the update.... not sure what's up but after taking the update my phone function will randomly not work and then sometimes will. Very frustrating...

Haven't run into any of those issues, maybe a clean install would help if you haven't already wiped system cache or the Phone/Messaging app cache.

Yes. Have had this problem on both of out Note 5 phones.

Is it safe it update
The reason why I say this is because I'm so concern about the battery life on my phone. The main question is: Does this update improve the battery life or does it make the the battery life worse ??
I get better battery life on the new update, but if you do decide to update, I would recommend doing a factory reset after taking it. That or flash if with ODIN. I would bet that most of the niggling issues people are having are upgrade related. Also if you do anything involving debloating/package disabling outside of the disable function built into TouchWiz/Android do a fresh install.

Found my own answer. The instructions in this link to enable Audible, update, and then install Amazon music, worked!
Am I stupid, or did the battery percentage in the status bar disappear?

I'm stupid. I forgot there's an option in the battery settings. Maybe I knocked it if no one else had it go away with the update.

I am on stock rooted ICS, and nearly every time I update apps, if more than one is updating, then it will restart itself. I'm not sure if Lookout antivirus could be causing this with scanning after every install, but I wanted to check.
Also, I want to know about any possible answers as to updating when it stops about halfway on updates, and it waits a while to continue the download?

Lookout doesn't get along with ICS. It used to cause freezing every time it scanned an app. Its really only useful if you are downloading apps not from the play store.
And updates shouldn't go to 100% it only downloads the specific pieces needed to update.

I can say this, the play store apps update has definitely got some issue post ICS OTA i.e if the screen times out the app update hangs midway, etc etc. only resolution is wait up keeping the screen active until all apps have updated fully. I am using Avast while on GB and even now as well as Apps2SD (SamLu). This is surely a bug.

I haven't heard of anybody having this problem. I know for a fact mine updates with the screen locked because I set everything to update automatically and I always wake up to at least one notification that something updated successfully.

I hadn't seen that thread, I'm sorry. You could try disabling auto screen off and see if that changes anything. I've got my battery tweaked out so the wakelocks don't really affect me as much as they should.
My only other suggestion would be to clear play store data and uninstall the updates for it. I generally do that to force it to update, and it may just be an outdated version causing issues. Current version is 3.9.16

Okay, so I am definitely thinking that the restarting is due to high CPU usage. It happened after I uninstalled Lookout and installed Avast which also scanned after each install. Now, I tried running a few other processes after I disabled Avast's scan after every install. I can produce the same result: a reboot because of what I suspect to be high CPU usage. It did not do this before the OTA update, so I think it might be somewhat due to the OTA overclocking to 1200Mhz. I might try to underclock it to see if that helps.
I will try messing with the deep sleep stuff too, but it even happens when the screen stays on, so I am not sure if this is the cause.

No issues and thanks for your helpful inputs, how do I go about clearing the play store data? All I see is "clear search history". The Play store ver what I have is 3.9.16. There are also two settings which are greyed out i.e "Unlock settings" & "use pin for purchases". Don't know if other users have this same as me?

Purchased my Droid Razr HD on launch day and I must say I was in love with the phone on ICS. Was extremely excited when the JB update hit. But since I updated, my phone has been a complete mess. I have been patient in hopes it would fix itself, but below are some of the issues.
When I unlock the phone, the clock in the circle widget lags, so I will unlock, it will say 2:00 for a solid second or two, then update to 2:10. The time should not lag like that. It basically lags and adjusts every time I unlock it. If I haven't touched my phone in 45 minutes, I'll unlock, it will say 2:00, then two seconds goes by and it updates to 2:45
When I hit messaging to view my texts, all of my contacts show up as just phone numbers, then after a few seconds the names load. If I scroll down further they are still numbers then switch to names.
The browser goes unresponsive. Everything from inability to swap tabs, to hitting a link. Usually I'll force stop chrome.
Overall the entire phone experiences major lag issues. Typing, swapping apps, etc... Anyone else experience this? Could the phone have just downloaded the OS poorly?

It's seriously making me want to dump this phone.
Indeed there is lag. Here's a funny thing, I get lag using the stock launcher and swiping the page from left to right with the any of the stock image wallpapers loaded.
However, if I use a live wallpaper (say Phase Beam) the swiping from left to right with the live wallpaper active is blisteringly quick.. How fcuked up is that?
I am having the same issue. I factory reset the phone before flashing JB. I also have times that the phone is completely unresponsive and requires a hard reboot. Any ideas?
there is definite lag when scrolling over to the quick settings page, idk why motorola can't get that fixed. My big complaint is the lack of stock android browser. I hate chrome, its slow compared to the aosp browser. I actually bought another Galaxy Nexus and am going back to that. Will miss the battery life though. You could always use the utility in the dev section to go back to ICS though
I used the utility to go back to ICS. I didn't have lag issues, actually my phone on JB was much faster and smoother. I went back because of all of the features missing from JB. For instance:
1) Motorola keyboard (much better than the AOSP keyboard in JB IMO)
2) Manage internal storage feature (gone in JB)
3) Wired headphone equalizer in ICS works on anything coming out of the headphone jack. (In JB it only works in the music app)
4) Also there is a bug where if you are listening to music through headphones and get a text message, the notification only comes through at less than half volume and there is no pause in the music. I have missed several text messages because of this. Even if i know the sms is coming through and i see it appear on the screen i still can't hear it over the music
I'm sure there were a few more things i am missing, but those were enough for me to switch back.
same lagg here
on ics, adw launcher heped with my lagg, but on jb, doesnt seem to matter what launcher i use, lagg everywhere. unlocking is annoying and sms app takes a bit to populate. cant wait for a solid cm 10.1 for this. I feel like its the only fix.
I would have thoght since motorola is owned by google, the os would be as good as the nexus. NOT even close
Not the ideal solution, but have you guys tried doing a full wipe factory reset and/or wiping the cache partition?
My Razr HD has just started developing a "dim" screen from waking after a long period. Not sure if this is software or hardware, it doesnt happen all the time - maybe once a day - but I have to go to the display settings and check/uncheck the auto brightness box to fix it....
Any of you out there having a similar issue??
I installed nova launcher prime and it is extremely smooth.

What? I tried to get to the stock recovery, but I cannot seem to get past the "dead android" screen no matter what button combination I try.
Edit: you have to be really precise when holding down the volume up and down buttons lol
Is it hold down the power/lock button, then tap volume up? Think that's the combo on my Nexus S
I've been trying to figure out this lag thing too...I really dislike lag. I disabled Google Now & disabled the Verizon Apps as previously suggested. I also think I may have found something awesome:
It may be premature, but I believe I've found a way to get rid of almost all lag. I installed this apk called Seeder.
My lag pretty much gone. I've been disappointed in EVERY Android phone I've ever had (because of lag)...this seems to have fixed it.
I installed the leak the second it was confirmed to be the legit Verizon approved build and the lag for me was comparable if not slightly better than ICS. Nova Launcher is good though, you lose the settings menu that always lags the first time you swipe to it, but you can replace that with Power toggles for the pull-down menu.
What you're experiencing seems much worse than what I remember because the phone was still highly usable, just not perfect. I was never a big fan of Circles, even after removing it from my home screen it would find its way into my list of running processes till I froze it with titanium backup. I froze virtually all the Verizon crap that'd run constantly too and the phone has been nearly flawless since installing Nova.
Also came across several sites I need to access for work that render horribly slow on Chrome like Hawaii'sVIP, it just chugs along like a slide show. Dolphin Browser on the other hand renders heavily populated pages almost instantly. It also looks truly hardware accelerated during rapid zooming and scrolling, where Chrome often jumps around and loads the page in chunks.

Is there a tool or way to test the Nexus 5 sdcard memory?
For the last six months I've had problems with my rooted Nexus 5 (stock kitkat) suddenly running very slow. After a lot of time trying to figure out why, I determined the following.
1. Slowdown happens when an app is writing something to the sdcard.
2. Is not a particular app. Can be any app.
3. When it happens all 4 CPU cores are running close to full blast.
4. Battery usage shows "android os" is 50% of the usage.
5. Task killers do not solve the problem.
6. Reboot restores things to normal for a while.
So I now wonder if there's something wrong with the built in memory but don't know how to test it.
Is there a way to test the Nexus 5 message? It is very frustrating to talk 2-3 pictures and then have the 4th one make everything grind to a stop. Right now, typing this is a pain because every letter takes its time to appear. I know rebooting will solve it but I should not have to.
sounds like you get a process(es) that get "stuck". also, when this happens, have you ever checked if your google stuff is syncing or " stuck"? sometimes badly written apps can cause this to happen as well.

I think you are right but I don't know how to find the faulty process. I "think" I first noticed it after the google camera update, but I used settings /apps/ to uninstall the camera update without improvement. I think camera showed the problem because it has to save the image to memory sdcard.
I don't sync and have sync turned off everywhere and on all apps. Sometimes Google play shows up as the prominent battery user even though I don't have it update apps automatically. But it is primarily android os that is the bad guy.
One of the things I had tried when the problem first started was to restore an earlier nandroid backup, but the problem continued, so I restored the most recent nandroid I had done before the earlier restore.
Recent screenshot.
I was on the browser and Tapatalk for a while. But not on play store.
Not frozen now when taking this screenshot.
You need to get gsam, or BBS or wakelock detector and see what one of those says. The stock battery screen is pretty much useless to find a battery problem.
But I'm guessing all your issues are tired to one bad app as said above.
Get a battery app I suggested, run a full charge down with it running.... And comb thru all of it and see if anything pops out.

I already did that. I have gsam and wakelock detector installed but my knowledge of Android is very limited and they have not helped me so far except to confirm I have a problem. I wonder if there is a way to see the dates I installed various apps. That way I could uninstall in the order they were installed.
Here are various screenshots. The list of active processes goes down several pages.
My guess... It's an app that hadn't been updated since kit kat has been out, and it's spamming location services.
Just a guess.
Check in gsam for times waking device, held awake time and kernel wakelock. (You need gsam root companion from play store installed as well.). These are all found in gsam app screen by clicking the drop down at the top. See if anything looks bad on any of those.
---------- Post added at 05:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:17 PM ----------
Oh, and obviously, whatever tick tick is, is killing your battery. If it accesses location.... that's my bet for the culprit.
Thank you all for the advice. Obviously I've tried various things. TickTick is a todo list app. Quite nice actually. Anyway I had suspected it might be a problem and have uninstalled it (several times) with no improvement.
Finally, I seem to be making some headway. Don't know which of these two did it (if the improvement lasts.....).
1. There were 3-4 apps I had avoided updating because I didn't like the updated versions (maps, Hangouts which I don't use, Firefox, etc). So I now gave up and clicked on "update all".
2. I disabled the module gravitybox and rebooted.
So far things have returned to normal. My CPU cores are back to low levels.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed. If things continue well after a while I will reactivate gravitybox. I'm holding my breath!
After a full 15 minutes of normal behavior (unbelievable!), I took my courage in hand, reactivated gravitybox. Used my usual apps without the previous freezing recurring (so far). If this continues - and it seems to - it might suggest you don't update GAPPS (I think it was Hangouts) only at your peril.
Such a difference having an uncrippled phone!
After a while the slowdowns returned. Any suggestions?
Its arrived at last , and before April too ..
Can confirm, this is Nougat (7.0) with the security patch of 1st February.
I'll try to find some big differences on the settings..
Oh, and before I forget. Welcome everyone, I just got this phone yesterday. Switching from a Zenfone 2, I hope I'll get a good battery life like almost everyone, and try to participate as most as possible.

EDIT 2 : I received a mail and it didn't crash anymore. Weird
I'm not sure I can recommend anyone upgrading to this yet....my phone has become very laggy and stuttering in different apps....it got better after I cleared the cache and a soft reset, but I guess it will be a few bug-fixes in the near future. I know that maybe a factory reset will be the solution, but I haven't got the time at the moment...
Which ROM variant were people on to get this ota update? I'm on UK three and there is no sign of it. Could be that three have to mess with the rom first, or a staggered roll out.

Will Row have different modem etc. So potentially different performance or will it be identical minus 3 bloatware. I'm always reluctant to install ROMs not available direct from manufacturer from online because of risk of malware... Is this link a trusted source?

they just upgraded from 6.0.1 to 7.0 , by leaving the apps as it is , its a kind of disappointment , they might have at least included a BETTER launcher,
Hope they upgrade their APPS also to next level, mainly that CAMERA

Has anyone noticed the 'nightmode' now totally sucks? In 6.0.1 it doesn't distort the colour just significantly dims screen. In 7.0 it doesn't dim at all, just changes to a sepia tone!! Why did they change that function! YouTube audio sync appears fixed and the os feels smooth and snappy.
Few annoying quirks like once quick draw is open some items don't switch on/off with single press.
DPI change option are available in Developer options...??
Yeah, I noticed. I downloaded the "Night mode for Lenovo" app from the play store, but it's kind of lame to have to rely on an app for functionality that was baked in 6.0.1.

Yeah feel annoyed as other than this functionality, everything else is either better or simply different. Oh well... EDIT found a great work around. It remembers the brightness level in two states, with auto and without auto. I will just set the brightness to lowest with auto off and then disabling auto, will give me my 'night' mode.
Hi!
So I bought the Gear Vr 2 (the 2016 edition) and after about 30 min use streaming videos over WiFi I start to get warnings about the phone overheating.
From the reasearch I could pull, it seems to be a very rare issue on S7s, with people reporting pulling up to 2 hour gaming sessions with no such warnings.
I've tried closing all apps in background (from going to recents and closing all), also restarting the phone and trying right after. And while it I did get a few more minutes, I still got the warning. If I ignore it and keeep using it, the phone gets super laggy. Also tried going into airplane mode (with only wifi running) but still the same.
Any ideas? Never noticed the phone heating up much on any other event.
BTW, I'm on stock nougat.

if you own a Samsung Galaxy smartphone and are experiencing excessive battery drain, overheating and performance problems, VR might be the cause of all your problems too. Oculus recently sent an app update that has started creating these issues. The problems affect Gear VR-ready Galaxy phones, but the fix is pretty simple.
Okay so it seems that some people on here have come to the conclusion that the battery drain issue that some are experiencing is from an Oculus update this morning (Gear VR). I tried uninstalling the app completely to see if that helps at all – Reddit user said
You can fix these issues by simply disabling or deleting the Gear VR Service until Oculus sends an update fixing the problems.
Go to Settings > Applications > Application Manager.
Locate Gear VR Service.
Uninstall or disable.
Support on community discussion thread advises users to “uninstall Oculus Home first, and then Oculus Rooms (in that order) and then re-dock” the Galaxy device. “After you do that, it should download the latest working update,” hopefully fixing the issue.
Before uninstalling or disabling, however, simply open the app and see if it fixes the issue. Some users have reported that an Oculus update pushed itself through when the app was opened. The update seems to fix the problem. If it doesn’t, try the above fixes to see if you get rid of these problems.

Check when an article was updated. It may still show an older date, the date of the initial release, but if you click on it, you may see that it was updated, and when. Or if it was not.
So, even older articles may be helpful.
