Anyone know a way to use google voice as it's own completely separate phone app? - General Questions and Answers

I know there is hangouts. But you cant edit your contacts from within the app, and cant choose which contacts to display.
I want to have my google voice number as a completely separate phone app that does not forward to my phones number at all.
Original phone: original google account with all my contacts and everything else.
New app: google account #2 with its own separate contacts and only uses data and google voice number.
Is there an app that handles google voice separate from your regular phone?

Contacts and Google Contacts

So I found that the Touchwiz contacts app does not use ANY groups from google contacts but the "starred" favorites are not even stored in the Starred in Android group either.
Does anyone know if there is a way to set this up that I am missing? Or did samsung completely fail at google contacts integration?
There's been a couple of threads about this, but I've yet to see one with a sure-fired answer. I'd like to know also though, because I went ahead and put all my contacts that I wanted to keep on my gmail before buying the phone, and now the phone shows all of them (gmail, and sim)

Yes, Samsung screwed the pooch on this one. It installed a brain-dead Contacts app of its own instead of the stock Android Contacts app, which suppresses display of the Gmail contacts. You can't uninstall the Samsung app or reinstall the stock Android app.
The groups data apparently is being downloaded in the background during a sync with Google, but not displayed.
There is a workaround. You can try using a free third-party app from Market called Contacts Evolved. It displays your Gmail groups, including starred favorites. A bit buggy, though, with force-close issues.
I don't have a problem with the contact manager as my contacts aren't terribly organized anyways. But I do wonder what on earth the "phone" sub-group is. Does that mean it stays on my phone exclusively? Why would anyone on earth want that? defeats the whole purpose of android
Can the contacts button in the phone app trigger different contacts apps? Its shame really, I relaly like the swipe to call/text feature.

Synthesizing Google Contacts and HTC Facebook Contacts

I have been trying to get my google contacts to jive with my htc sense facebook contacts for two damn days. I manually deleted and recreated each and every one of my google contacts. It took four hours. It was the only way to get google voice actions to work on my phone. I entered the exact same data for each google contact that was there before, but deleting and remaking the contacts fixed all of the problems. Before deleting and rebuilding my google contacts, when I said "Call John Smith", the voice actions app would search the internet for him, not call him. When I said, "Send Text to John Smith", the app would put John Smith in the body of the message instead of in the address box. There must have been hidden data imported from the phone into my gmail contacts which was obstructing the voice actions app. I tried everything, and deleting the whole contact and remaking it from scratch was the only thing that worked to correct the issues I was having with google voice actions.
What I don't understand now is why all of my contacts who put their phone numbers on facebook have multiple numbers on their contact cards. Even though the person only has one phone number, the number is duplicated on the contact card, one from google and one from htc facebook. It's playing hell with my 2011 VW Jetta's Bluetooth sysem. My Tilt2 worked perfectly. I tried editing the google contacts to make them look exactly like the facebook numbers, but I still get duplicated numbers for each contact, such that only people who don't put their phone numbers on facebook will work with my car's bluetooth system.
Any suggestions?
On the FB Sync tab, only sync w/ existing contacts not Sync all. See if that works.
I'm not using the facebook app. I'm using the HTC Sense facebook app.
I'm not sure that it has that option. When I synced facebook too, it duplicated everybody's status update. The facebook app is not synced, just the HTC facebook app, which appears built in because I don't think you can access it directly.

How to get your Google Contacts sync'ed to the head unit?

From reading on here we cannot get Google's Contacts app to work - but other apps work - only I can't find a way to get them to sync the Google Contacts.
I've found mtcdialer.apk - which will redirect attempts to dial thru Bluetooth and I'd like to be able to have my actual contacts available.
Has anyone solved this?
I paired it with my Bluetooth phone, opened the Bluetooth app on the HU. When I pressed the button too search contacts (on the HU) the phone asked for permission to share contacts to HU.
All works
What you're talking about is sync'ing the phone's contacts via bluetooth to the Bluetooth calling app. Very different.
I solved the problem myself.
Thanks to MTCDialer.apk, ( https://github.com/f1xpl/MtcDialer/releases ) you can use a Google Dialer/Contacts app on the Head Unit. I wanted to do this in order to put my favorite contacts in an icon on the launcher so I could call with one tap. The problem was getting my contacts from my phone to the Contacts app on the HU.
What I did was use Contacts Backup and Restore, ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smarttools.mycontactsbackup ) to export my phone's contacts as a .VCF file and emailed it to myself from my phone.
On the HU, I downloaded the .VCF to /download/ and used True Contacts, ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cz.psencik.com.android.contacts ) and imported the .VCF into it. Then I was able to select my favorite contacts and used the app to put their icon on the home screen/launcher.
Based on other recommendations it is possible that Contacts+ might be better but I haven't tried it yet.

Is Google Contacts not working an issue with ALL android head units or just a few? I've had the same issue on two different Erisin head units?
Great thread. Only add you must use Google contact sync versión 4.x
If you use any more recent versión It Will not add "contacts" option to Google account
Hi, i have the AE0373B 8.0 PX5 headunit and i am unable to run mtcdialer. The app displays an error "Mtcdialer has stopped". Anyone else had this experience or could help? I would love to get this working.
I'll try to get all the apks I installed, but I even managed to get voice enabled on one of my modems.
I Have found that some Huawei E3131 Works great in 3G 25/5Mbit I have installed Google contacts+dial NON Nexus, and few others, Messages Works to receive SMS, And on PC even it works with voice I am Missing some Service apk to make that work also and One Dialer can try to call voice which end no service available.
EDIT: Added List of apps that work mostly, I yet need to figure out what Phone Services and Carrier Services to install but SMS receiving and sending works.
Only Stupid Viber do not work on HU and that is making me crazy. Hope this helps someone.
It is the steps to sync contacts via Google account.
Step 1. On your old Android phone, add a Google account.
Please go to "Settings" > "Accounts" > "Add Account" > select "Google" > go with the prompts to sign in your Gmail account. If you don't have an account yet, you need to create one at first.
Step 2. Sync Android contacts to Gmail account.
Please go to "Settings" > "Accounts" > "Google" > turn on "Sync Contacts" and other files you wanted on your old Android phone.
Step 3. Sync the contacts to the new Android phone.
You need to add a Google account on your new Android phone. Then go to "Settings" > "Accounts" > "Google" > select "Contacts" from the list of the Google backups > click "Sync Now" to transfer contacts from your old Android to the new one now.

Of course it will work, all he's doing is creating a google account on one device and using the same account on another device so both device have the same data once they are sync'ed with the account. Then google assistant can use the contacts from this account. It would probably work better if you only have 1 google account on the device.

I have my google account on my head-unit and the same one as my phone. Its just that there is no contact on the head-unit even when its synced. It just won't allow contacts on the head-unit because it has its own bluetooth app so wants you to use that app for calls instead.
Do you have Google Contacts installed on your HU? Once you have that on you need to add Contact Sync as it00x32 linked. Then you have to convince the HU to use a different dialer, follow the steps Martinsamp listed here.

Just joined Google Fi. Is there any way to add "messages" to the google apps button?

Title says it all. I just left Google Voice for Google Fi and ported my GV number over.
Minor thing, but I miss having the function in gmail when I click on the google apps, then google voice, then it launches to web interface. I can't seem to find a similar setup for the messages for web app. Does this exist?
I realize I'm just lazy, but would be nice to have!

Contacts app confusion

Hi All,
Just migrated from iPhone to OnePlus 7 Pro, and am enjoying my return to Android very much.
However, I'm really puzzled by how the inbuilt contacts app is working.
I've always kept my contacts synced with my Google account, so when I moved across I simply added my Google account and there were all my contacts.
So far, so simple. My expectation was that the Contacts app on the phone would simply display my Google contacts and that any edits would be reflected in the Google account.
I've recently tried to edit a contact, and I find that it's not so simple. For the particular contact, I appear to have 3 linked contacts. One from Google, one from WhatsApp and one from the phone itself.
To make matters worse, there appear to be more phone contacts than there are contacts in the Google account. How the hell did that happen? I've not added any new contacts, or told the phone to maintain any contacts locally.
I've now told the Contacts app to only show contacts that are in the Google account, and to use the Google account as the default for new contacts.
My questions are this:
1) Why does the phone appear to be maintaining a separate sets of contacts?
2) How do I know which field to edit in a contact. Attached screenshot shows show there are three identical sets of phone numbers. Which one is for the Google account?
3) Can I stop the phone from maintaining it's own local contacts database?
4) Can I make the phone only show the Google contacts when editing?
5) Can I get a view that shows which contacts are on the phone, but not in Google? I want to work out where the extra ones have come from.
Perhaps, I'm missing the point of how Android does this. If anyone could explain, that would be great.
Thanks,
Andy.
