I simply can't enter the recovery.
Have tried via adb reboot recovery command, but it only reboots regularly. With the phone switched off, holding volume down and connecting the phone to PC does nothing.
I want to wipe cache because after every OTA the phone is really fast and responsive. But after a few weeks it becomes sluggish, especially when using fingerprint sensor to unlock.
Phone is not rooted, E6653, FW. 253
Any advice?
Cheers
When I want to reboot to TWRP recovery I hold volume UP at yellow LED - holding volume down does nothing for me also.

That's your problem. Sony does not provide a recovery menu. You need root to flash a custom recovery.

That's really bad. Great job, Sony. I can't root my device because of company applications that require a stock firmware.
This is not acceptable, a customer should have at least access to basic recovery functions to maintain his device.
First and last time Sony.
But you can clear cache in Android settings. Just go to Settings, Storage and click on cached data.
To get root you don't need to flash a custom rom. But you have to unlock your bootloader.

I believe that you have to have an unlocked bootloader and root to boot into recovery mode. Follow this guide from the Sony website to see if tyou can unlock your bootloader; http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/
No need for unlock bootloader. Root is enough. There will be 4 files to put into root. To get cwm menu, turn off the phone, plug the phone charger, when you see the sony logo, click the volume down key as much as possible.

Thank you for correcting me, I haven't installed a recovery in a while. I first installed mine when I was unlocking my bootloader, hence the presumed need for an unlocked bootloader. It's always nice to be corrected as it enhances my knowledge that little bit more.
1. Install cwm from cmd again.
2. If successful, turn off ur device.
3. Connect the charger and Turn it on.when u see sony logo start pressing vol- repeatedly.
4. U will be in cwm.
Sent from my ST23i
which firmware version do you have? i heard firmware .16 require connect to usb to go to CWM
thank you all for your replies.
the bootloader is unlocked. i have the newest firmware(4.25). this could be the issue?
i tried to press a vol down button, but nothing happens.
i reinstalled the firmware with the sony update centre and rooted the phone.
the cmd method isn't working now, it say 'waiting for device' and stays like that.
i wanted to install jelly bean, and i wanted to use rom manager.
is there any other way to install it?
Waiting for device? Seems like youre in wrong mode, either it wants adb, flash, or fastboot. You got root, right? Use manual method - copy those cwm files using root capable file manager.
Sony Xperia Tipo ST21i
if its saying waiting for device, then drivers are not installed properly bro! first install them!
works
got it to work, god knows how.
thanks to everybody for the help.

Go to the bootloade mode again by pressing "power button + volume down button" and check your device status.. If it unlocked, we can proceed with next steps.. If it locked, try unlock it again using the same guide...

Same issue
this happens to me occasionally. it goes to black screen when an app restarts the phone or the device was forced shutdown (hold power 20secs)
to fix it, i go to recovery, either reset to factory or install a backup rom will revive the phone, but it is very annoying.
anyone knows a permanent solution?
not sure what to format on cwm, im afraid to lose anything important..
Trying to install CyanogenMod for my razr maxx HD. Recently used RSDlite to install 183.46.10 after OTA KK update kept failing. Then used towelroot to root and motopocalype to unlock bootloader. Fastboot screen shows bootloader is unlocked with status code: 3.
I then followed the instructions on the CyanogenMod site to flash CWM 6.0.4.4 recovery using fastboot, and all appeared to work fine.
However, when I try to reboot into recovery, nothing happens. I get hung up on the motorola dual core flashscreen for about a minute or two, then the screen goes black, then the phone reboots normally.
I tried flashing a different copy of CWM, tried TRWP, and tried several third party apps from Google Play store to boot directly into recovery using software reboot instead of hardware keys - all with the same results. I even tried flashing custom CWM recovery using ROM Manager and Rashr, same result.
Do I have a corrupt recovery partition? Any suggestions for how to fix?
You need to install a recovery for that phone specifically.

Use the recovery files found here.
Edit: on the site I posted, browse to the msm8690 folder. There you will find the recovery files.

Thanks, guys, total noob mistake. I knew the recovery needed to be specific for the phone, but didn't realize it varied depending on the bootloader. Will try again with the right recovery!

Those recovery aren't sticking for me. Does anyone have a suggestion to fix that issue.
Pushing the buttons doesn't work.
The only thing that is working is place the phone in fastboot mode and flash the recovery to my device three time and then I will go straight in recovery and there it is.

Your phone has been upgraded to Kit Kat and the bootloader unlocked, correct? The two recoveries linked to are for phones that already have already been upgraded to KK.
If so, power off your phone.
Then, hold down volume up and then press and hold power. After a few seconds, let go and the boot menu should come up.
Use Volume down to select "Recovery" and then hit "Volume Up". That should boot you into the custom recovery, depending on which one you flashed.
I prefer TWRP. CWM seemed buggy and it wouldn't always boot into it. A lot of times, I'd get a blank screen and would have to reflash it.
Another option is, when it's booted up, hooked up your phone to your pc and use adb to reboot it into recovery using "adb reboot recovery".

Yep.. I had some issue with my devices. I tried the update well root and the devices didn't want to boot up anymore. So I had to RSD lite the devices back to health. So I do have the latest software for the devices. I guess. I am going to use Twrp since you say it boots fine from the boot menu.

Is your bootloader unlocked? If not, that is your problem. You need to root, and then unlock the bootloader before you can flash TWRP and use CM.

Yes my bootloader is unlocked. Have code 3 on the devices.
try and unplug from USB when you reboot
I unlocked the bootloader using the instructions from the Sony developer site. It worked, and then I flashed the recovery software using the flash tool, Emma, but when I press the buttons to boot in recovery mode, instead of this, my OS resets, like factory reset, or it doesn't boot, just vibrates. I don't know what to do. I want to try cyanogenmod and I want to flash it, but without recovery I can't, and it's possible to find on the Sony site the stock rom in case I want to come back to the stock OS? And something else. After the reset, the OS looks different. I have features that I didn't have before

You have to upgrade your bootloader via Emma and flash the recovery.img via fastboot.
Thank you. I flashed a TWRP recovery and it worked.

No notification led and illumination bar blinking after rebooting device. I tried combination of power button + volume up or power button + volume down. Used Titanium backup to reboot into recovery. Ran adb command to reboot into recovery all failed.

If you format your system then the OS would also have gotten erased as well. Normally, if you opt to reboot after doing such a wipe, you'd get a notification advising you that no OS was installed.
Try flashing your stock ROM.

If you can still boot to TWRP, flash a ROM.

The device turn on only when it is plugged.
i cannot also access twrp.
Can you access the phone as a removable drive if you're booted into TWRP? I did that exact thing once and that's what saved me.
While the phone is off, hold volume up, volume down, & power, that should start the bootloader. Use volume buttons to change selection to Recovery Mode, and press power button.
All you had to do was search google.
