I have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus (rooted stock 4.0.4). I decided I would test out Clockworkmod touch recovery before doing anything too serious with it. So, I made a backup, rebooted, deleted an app, went back to recovery, and restored my backup. But, while it was restoring my data, it suddenly stopped and said "Error while restoring /data!" I rebooted and, after waiting through a really long boot, it booted into a semi-reset version of my phone. All of the apps claim to be installed but will not start.
So, thinking it could be a touch recovery issue, I flashed an older version of clockworkmod recovery and tried restoring after clearing my data, cache, factory reset, and Dalvik cache. Still, the exact same thing happened. I also tried restoring older backups, but the exact same thing happened.
What is going on, and what should I do? Thank you for your time.

There may have been a corruption in your data backup. Just delete that backup and make a new one.
Nope, I tried all three of my backups and had the same problem with all three. Plus, I can't simply make a new backup. I tried restoring to the backup and lost my stuff because it didn't finish restoring my data.
I'm having some issues with cwm too. Sometimes when I'm trying toi recover, it says "md5 mismatch", maybe its a linked problem?

rommanager
Install rommanager.apk premium and, to me is to solve the problem
So, I think I figured it out. Apparently, I only get this error when my backup contains more than a certain number of apps (or possibly the /data is over a certain size). Granted, I do have over 350 apps, but why is CWM Recovery messing up while trying to restore a big backup? It really should not affect it, but it seems to. So, I will be backing up with Titanium for my apps, and making nandroid backups only when I have under about 350 apps installed. If anybody else has any insight, please share it with me. Thanks.
The Answer (I am pretty sure...)
Okay, I think I finally figured it out. The reason it was not restoring properly was because I had about 350 user apps installed. My guess is that, while restoring, the recovery (CWM recovery in my case) puts the /data onto the RAM, and the RAM is not large enough to hold that much at once. I deleted a lot of apps, backed up in CWM recovery, and restored back to the backup, and everything worked flawlessly. I am surprised that no one has ever had this problem. So, in the future, I am making Titanium backups of all my apps, batch uninstalling a bunch of them from within Titanium (so that I have under 300 at the most), and then making a backup. Then, I can flash a new ROM, recover, or whatever and finally use Titanium to put all my apps and data back. I just thought I would post this in case anyone else ever finds this problem. It was really frustrating for me, but the insufficient RAM theory seems to explain it. Post your thoughts on the matter.

its better to use titanium backup application for you.user friendly and worthy..
Last night I was trying out some different roms using philz touch recovery. Then the backup I made of my daily driver, MIUI, wouldn't restore. I tried doing a custom restore as that has worked in the past when my full backup wouldn't restore. Still wouldn't work. So i tried some other ROMs. Avatar ROM, OSE, and even MIUI were giving me issues, and at some point I lost connectivity I believe. I went to bed with MIUI installed, but not running. Today after not having calls, texting, data, etc. in addition to MIUI repeatedly asking me to set a mobile data cap/limit, then not letting me click on anything when trying to set it, I decided to go back to stock in hopes that it would restore connectivity. I used ODIN to flash a stock from August I had, the file was "KIES_HOME_I535VRBMF1_1152558_REV09_user_low_ship. tar.md5" which is android 4.1.2. So now I'm back on stock with o root and still no connectivity.
Under status my phone shows Network as "Unknown", Service state as "Out of service", Mobile network state as "Disconnected", Mobile network type as "Unkown" and IMEISV as "00" if that makes any difference.
I'll be re-rooting and probably flashing MIUI again, but how do I get connectivity back?
Thanks so much!

Okay so I restored my EFS/IMEI and I have my connectivity back. Unfortunately, I still can't restore the backup I made of my daily driver (MIUI). In an extremely frustrating turn of events, all my Titanium Backup backups of apps are gone. I just purchased TB Pro yesterday. Anyone have any ideas? And is it generally a good idea to stay away from "Philz Touch Recovery"?

Are the backups kept on the SD or internal? If so, I assume they got deleted when I ODINed back to stock.

Correct. TiBu backs up on internal memory unless you change to SD card in settings. I learned this the hard way as well .
If I were you I would try an alternate version of CWM to see if you could restore your backup successfully. Philz recovery is based on CWM, correct? That way you would get all your app data back. Also you could maybe try to pull the Titanium data from your nandroid backup (assuming it's on your SD card), but I'm not sure how to go about this.

I had the same ideas, but since I can't locate the nandroid now, I assume I must have backed up to internal due to low memory on my SD. Lost all my xmas photos as well, which is ironic because the whole reason I was messing around with different roms was because I couldn't get instagram working with MIUI. Ah well, think I'll be sticking with CWM as backups made with philz have failed to restore in the past as well.
Well, this query is slightly old because later I did a stock restore through Odin ..
But still ,
I wanted to restore my nandroid backup .. I was in CWM and selected to restore my last nandroid backup ,, It completed with an error which I don't remember now ..
When I selected REBOOT SYSTEM NOW , it just simply turned off and turned on with usual SAMSUNG logo, and stuck there for a couple of minutes ,, At first I thought it was due to first time restore ,but after waiting for more than 10 minutes,it was still on SAMSUNG logo
I removed the battery and inserted it back,,but still the same thing ....
I don't know what went wrong
So the query is : Do I have to clear anything like dalvik cache etc before doing a restore like I did before flashing a new ROM ???
It's my first post on this site, and would be glad if got a complete answer,,bcz I want to flash some roms again and don't want to resort to Odin to go back to stock as I want everything to be as it was before flashing.
Thanks...
might I ask what ROM you are using now ? in my experience, I think if you want to keep everything the same as it was (setup, password..ect) before flashing a new ROM then don't flash any new ROM because it might cause force close and such ...
a google account will help you remember the app you have previously
Helium will help you backing up data from the app
Apex launcher has the option of backup your previous settings
regards,
Well, I am not worried about my data or anything ,coz I had already made a backup of pics, videos etc
The actual question is :
What might have caused the phenomenon???!!!! Do I need to clear dalvik cache or anything before restoring nandroid ??
well it doesn't hurt clear BEFORE and AFTER flashing/restore - so I do that every time
Still haven't got the answer ...

I own a Galaxy Grand 2 and I use CWM for backup and restore alot while switching between roms, tho I sometimes happen to have the same problem as yours
But I managed to fix it whith a wipe data/Factory Reset after the restore is completed the n boot into the system yoy restored and then do an advance restore for data only but don't wipe anything this time!
This should help you if you still face the same problem consider changing/Upgrading your costume recovery or reflash your original firmware (usind odin) to clean the phone up (but make sure yoy don't downguard your firmware as it may softbrike your phone)
Hit the Thanks button If I helped you!
thanks for your advice. but unfortunately it didnot work for me.
i tried the way you explaint the process.
Good day.
Yesterday it has been available in this forum the beta nougat rom and i am eager to flash it in my phone :fingers-crossed:
My phone is not rooted and i wanted to backup the app data before flashing.
After extensive search in google i found that Samsung Smart Switch can be used to backup app data without root.
Has anyone successfully backed up and restored app data with it, after a full wipe?
Thank you.
Hi! I used it and worked fine for 90% of all my stuff. Only some settings like system sound and a few apps werent correctly restored

Dafuq? I used it to backup everything and after a wipe I restored but then had to set up each one of my apps from scratch! They have been installed by Smart Switch, but all were in initial state...
The only 'true' backup and restore is TWRP Nandroid backup
Others don't work properly in my experience
KIES was the worst

It can't f*ing be that there's no solution for a complete app-data backup without root
Even that piece-of-crap software called itunes backs up everything, as far as I remember.
Knox knocks me off.
This is the first phone that i want, but can't root. (As i already screwed up and had to send it to Samsung once). I Miss good old Titanium backup and TWRP.
It seems that is possible to flash Nougat beta without losing data.
Thank you everyone for your replies!
