Rooting with external SD card - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Hi, quick question here.
I have my external Sdcard encrypted and I think I'll need to root and probably install a custom ROM. Question is (or are):
For ONLY rooting: Do I need to decrypt the sdcard? Can I re-encrypt it afterward?
Do custom ROM's in general support SD card encryption? (I suppose so, but wanted to ask)
Thanks!

Thank you! Though I think that thread talks about full phone encryption, which although sounds like the same thing it actually isn't. When you have the phone itself encrypted, the OS needs to have the key before booting up fully or else it will not be able to start up correctly. With the SD card this isn't the case and can be encrypted by code at the user-level, post-boot. At least that's how I understand it.

APPS2SD For Beginners

Hello everyone. I am branching over to XDA from Androidforums in need of more guidance.
First, let me say I HAVE searched for instruction to my post, I HAVE NOT been successful with any of my reading. I just closed three separate windows of firefox with a total of near 75 tabs, all related to apps2sd, but none giving the specific instruction I need.
If in reading this you can think of another thread that has my answer, PLEASE post it for me. -much appreciated
If not, please read and help if possible. (I am listing my set up in case it is user specific)
CDMA Hero
Rooted
RA-Heroc v1.2.3 Recovery
Fresh 1.0 Rom
My goal is to initialize and complete the process of setting up apps2sd system today.
I would like to sucessfully have this running and I cannot find any specific guide on "how to". I have however found MANY that speak about it after the fact.
So, please someone tell me what I need to do to set this up. I want apps off device and to have a "swap space (???)" set up.
Can I do this now (after having flashed custom rom) or do I need to start all over, beginning with apps2sd process first and then flashing Rom.
Detailed instructions much appreciated, or a link to appropriate thread.
THANKS!! Rep points for you!!
You just need to partition your SD card as ext2+FAT+swap and reboot. That's all.
This will erase your SD card, so be sure you copy everything off first.
Please edit the title of this thread and take out the [ROM] prefix. This is not a ROM and the title is misleading.
Thanks.
EDIT: Does FreshROM 1.0 have apps2sd? I thought it only supported it if you had it on there previously.
EDIT: Never mind, I just saw this in the FreshROM apps2sd rant post - "Now with all of THAT said -- this rom officially has and supports Apps2SD. "

Are you serious, it's that simple?!!! argggh.
Okay, but with a bit more detail... I am rebooting into recovery mode and then doing this? Can you explain with just a tad more detail? thanks!
Haha there is no more detail. Just format your SD card with that option. WAM BAM DONE
I swear I'm not a cop! I just made the same mistake once.
I tried looking for apps2sd info a while back and ran into your same dilemma. I ended up using Modaco's ROM (actually, I used the UNOFFICIAL updated modaco made by obelisk79) because it already had it on there.

Right in the recovery options there's one that says something like "Format SD card: Ext2+FAT+swap" or something like that. Choose that, then reboot.
I thought Fresh 1.0 had AppsToSD built-in. If it doesn't, this won't actually accomplish anything.

Yeah I found somewhere that it would obviously erase the card data. I am really trying to figure out if the apps2sd is the same as "swap" since I keep finding bad things about swapping.

No, it's not the same as using swap. It works fine, don't worry about it.
AppsToSD works best with a Class 6 card, since the class 6 cards are faster.

Yes, I'm using it. I have read flipzmode's rant about why he doesn't like Apps2SD. I have had no problems with it.
When I ran it with the modaco/obelisk79 ROM it seemed to keep the phone relatively speedy, even with a ton of apps installed. I am using FreshROM 1.0 now and I ended up uninstalling a few apps because of lag.
EDIT: I am not inferring that FreshROM is any slower. I think the problem is on my end! BTW, I am using a 16G class 6 card.

Unfortunately I think mine is not a class 6, it's just an 8gig standard micro sd. (PNY brand).
Anyway, so i went in recov. mode and formatted to the ext/fat/swap partition. I reloaded my card with previous data. Is that all I need to do? is there no setting I need to monitor or adjust?
and also, will my current apps get pushed to the sd or is there a process I should follow to move them to the sd?
I just did this and it pushed my apps from what I can tell. My internal storage number went from around 90mb used to 52mb. Now my real question is if I wanted to undo this.. what kind of options/headache am I looking at ?

Current apps should get pushed to the SD. To make sure it's working, pull up an adb shell and do:
cd /data/app
pwd
You should see "/system/sd/app" spit back at you.

Well yeah you would certainly have to reformat. But in addition to that you would need to re-install your apps, since they would have been removed from the card.
I was reading somewhere that you can change a setting to zero which causes the hero to pull the apps back to internal storage, leaving you not needing to re-install. cAn't remember where setting is or where i found it...

How to encrypt external sd card In case its compromised

Ive read this can be done incase your external sd card is stolen or lost where u can passcode encrypt the entire card where if someone trys to view jpgs images or video anything for that matter they get a blank image..
Is this a Computer pc encryption deal or native to being done right from the device or an app.
And are they're any downsides to doing it and being able to view yourself from your device while encrypted

Settings -> Security -> Encrypt External SD Card (and Encrypt Device).
Keep in mind that it's not worth much if your phone is turned on when the attacker steals it. No matter what.
Against the ordinary thief it'll do fine.
Soooo
stealing the phone gives the person 100% access to the SD card? atleast the iphone has the numeric or alphanumeric password feature and 10 mistakes before Wipe.

Absolutely right. Still looking for a way to lock out federal forces in case my phone gets "arrested". Any ideas or recommendations?
Encryption of external sd... still is supposed to make any file on sd pass code required. .. as in if someone takes the card out tries it in a pc or other phone they'll see black or blank images .
Essentially making it like Iphone proof .
Only thing can be done is a fat 32 format to clear card.
But I havent tried cause I don't wanna take risks of loosing vital info .
As far as the last post about federal people compromising your phone .... well trust me if they get your phone they can hack anything

I once hacked me an EncFS-script that mounts an encrypted folder on my sdcard as sdcard0 and the rest of the sdcard as sdcard1. I use it on my phone since more than a year now without any problems:

It may run without any changes on your phone, too. Otherwise you only have to change some paths in the script or ask me for help.

Thanks for the advice. By looking at that thread I see that you are using encFS. What i have in mind is a full partition encryption (just like LUKS, for instance). Do you know if that would be possible?

I think by "full partition encryption" you mean "encryption of the file system".? Because if you only mean encryption of "all files on the sdcard" - that's what I actually do. I also wrote three points about my decision for EncFS.
You could try to use TrueCrypt in the same way I use EncFS, but with an encrypted partition. Apart from that I'm not aware of any (easy) way to encrypt the file system. Android uses dm-crypt for internal encryption, but I don't know if and how you can use it to encrypt the sdcard.
The latest luks manager (2.5.1) allows you to encrypt external sdcard, which should me mounted on boot or manually and unlike Encfs, no password is stored in plain text. To have a password stored in plain text is no security at all.

In 2 ways: First, a security model that relies on a separate encryption process that is not provided in that model is not secure. What if data partition is not encrypted? Second, you can't rely on permissions only, if permissions alone were enough, we wouldn't need disk encryption at all. Textsecure used to have a glaring security hole: all sms were stored on disk in plain text. Moxie didn't say encrypt your data, he instead fixed the issue.

You still remember? I meant no offence.
Adopted storage: even if this is true, it is still OK, because I don't think you can encrypt adopted storage without encrypting data partition. In other words, there is no way in M the encryption key could be read without first decrypting data. In your case, it is possible, since encrypting SD is independent from encrypting internal data partition. But if I were Google, I would still not save the encryption key in plain...

Rooting My Samsung?

Okay, so I'm in a lot of pain. I was having some serious trouble with my Samsung s4 and decided to hard reset it thinking my pictures and contacts were on my SD CARD. They weren't. And nothing was backed up to Google or my Verizon cloud. I contacted Verizon. They sent me to Samsung and vice versa. I know my files aren't permanently deleted. The feds could easily recover them you know? Those pictures meant a lot to me. So I desperately did research on how to recover my hard reset contacts and photos.. I downloaded multiple softwares that didn't work and I also came upon rooting my phone. Can someone please help me? Help me root my phone and recover my pictures? I don't want to unlock my bootloader and wipe my phone a second time. I sobbed like a two year old thinking they're gone forever.. :crying: :crying: :crying:

but it also talks about external memory. "External memory would allow you to use data recovery tools that scan for deleted files and return them to a usable state. These tools work because most operating systems don't go through and set all of those 1's and 0's to just 0's when you delete a file. Usually the operating system will just delete the reference pointer in the index that says that a file exists with such-and-such name and it's located at this position on the hard disk / memory location." Is there no way I can get this stuff back?
You have a Samsung, either your bootloader is unlocked or it isn't, in the case that it is unlocked you could go ahead and root and it probably wouldn't take much effort. Not much else we can tell you about rooting your phone without a model number though.

External Memory is SDCARD what you want is Internal Memory, and it's pretty hard if not impossible to regain the stuff back from Internal Memory.

[CONCEPT] Using A/B Slots for dual ROM Boot

Attention developers!!!
I have an idea of a concept where the A/B slots could be used to boot 2 different ROMs simultaneously one on Slot A and another on slot B using another data partition. Is it possible?
Feel free to discuss in this thread.
It would work, but we only have one data partiton. You have to split it (like on the mi a1 I think?)
I have found a good method for dual-booting, but some roms don't work and there is only 1 data partition.
I have lots of ideas ???
Can we not split the single data partition into two separate partitions for data?

You can use one slot for daily driver rom with a bigger data partition size and use the other spot for experimental rom with a smaller data partition size. How many of us really use the entire 64gb or 128gb storage for data?

TWRP offers to switch the slot which is how i got the idea that probably we could have two ROMs installed and switch the slot from TWRP as and when required.

In order to make things simpler, decrypted data partition would be a pre requirement.
Encryption is not really useful for most people and a possible issue doing this kind of manipulation to actually make some sense out of (otherwise useless) A/B partition scheme
This idea would probably be slow and a lot of overhead (i.e. wasted battery) but you could theoretically create a writable disk image and then have the ROM dynamically mount that in the data location. No idea how it would work or if it would work.
Otherwise, you could always look into chroot or something like that. Just throwing ideas out, I have no development capability.
can i install pie on one slot and if for whatever reason do not like can i go back to the other slot? rooted as well? thank u!

Yeah I'd love to dual boot my op6, I'm really missing it because I used it on my Nexus 5x and it was really useful, we should all reach out to the devs of multiboot or dual boot patcher or someone could port it, that'd be amazing
Anything is possible, the issue how much development would be required. My guess here is the answer is "so much that no one is going to bother."
There's nothing special about A/B. It's just duplicated partitions, a system for flagging which set is active, and using the arrangement for seamless updates. It's not designed for dual boot because both slots are intended to use the same data partition. So at the very least you'd need some function to split or otherwise change how the data partition is used. Given that much of this is baked into core Android, I suspect that hacking it for dual boot would be both unstable and a risk of brickage. Past tools for non-A/B phones are most certainly not going to work here.

Does any app exist that does not require root permissions that will allow me to reformat an SD card with a format of my choosing

Minor update I'm no longer really needing a solution to this problem although it would be very helpful for everyone if one was found as I'm sure this has been a problem too many people at this point)
I'm over here trying to root my S6 Lite tablet without a computer just a bloody cell phone and I am oh so close but I have no way of reformatting this SD card cuz xxxxx Android wants to put it as FAT32 for god knows what reason it's an 8 gig SD card and I've even tried reformatting it in both devices I have same result Android just being stupid and I am at the end of my rope here cuz I have not been able to find any apps once so ever that actually allow me to reformat an SD card with a format of my choosing or at least one that's usable
Now please tell me that someone on this xxxxx website has a solution to this problem because once again the weird stuff I'm doing has led me down a path no one else has seemingly took
(And if anyone's asking why I'm rooting this tablet it's because Android 12 works like crap)
Mod Edit: Some content removed.
I am kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place as I have not been able to figure out any method of formatting this SD card with something usable because Android is for some unknown reason only formatting it with FAT32 despite using two different devices to attempt to format it normally and I have not been able to find a single application that exists that does not require root permissions that would allow me to change the format of the SD card I have legitimately spent like three or four hours now trying to figure something out and have come up with nothing please someone here help
I'm just going to add this year that I obviously don't have access to a computer or this wouldn't be a problem
Root your phone and use twrp to change filesystem.
But in your case when you don't want to root. Unplug SD card and connect with adapter to your pc.
Go to this computer and right click on the SD card

Root your phone and use twrp to change filesystem.
But in your case when you don't want to root. Unplug SD card and connect with adapter to your pc.
Go to this computer and right click on the SD card
Click format And select filesystem
Quick format is fine
Format and when finished
Put SD card back.

Both of those are a problem because I don't have a computer to use and I am trying to root my tablet and the only other device I have is an a20 cell phone that's not rooted either and I am so close but I can't Flash the modded firmware because Android is formatting the SD card with xxxx FAT32 so besides this SD card the only other option I have is to attempt to do the flash over wireless ADB I mean seriously if I had a bloody computer I would have been done like 3 days ago
Mod Edit: Some content removed.
Can you try to use this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.scnc.fixsdcardmemory&hl=nl&gl=US

That's a scam app that I kept running into if I recall it didn't even boot although it's hard to tell cuz I tried a couple that look pretty much identical to that so once again something that's completely useless I came here cuz I was hoping somebody would have an actual solution not the same garbage I kept running into trying to Google my way through this
it's an actual solution youre just being silly.

It's not or I would have found it by now I've tried everything you can find easily on Google and the Play Store absolutely nothing has worked or been anywhere near what I'm looking for besides a couple of apps that require root permissions I was coming here hoping that somebody would have an actual tool for this application not someone giving me the same
trash that google did, now I do appreciate you attempting to help but I need somebody here that is a lot more knowledgeable than you

Normally a person would update the result and from there we look for another solution. Goodluck finding someone knowledgeable lol, if you weren't such a special one I would have suggested something more advanced
Greetings from a well respected Samsung SSD technician
