Here is my problem: I woke up this morning and my power/volume buttons do not work for functions such as turning the screen on and off and chnging volume. However, I can still power the device on normally, power the device down(long press power button to force shut down), as well as enter recovery, so I know the buttons are not broken. I have already tried rebooting as well as clearing cache and dalvik/art from TWRP and disabling some xposed modules that I thought may have been causing the issue. I am using the Shield k1 with root access, xposed, and TWRP on the latest firmware. Any and all help help is highly appreciated. Thank you all for your help ahead of time.
Note: If you have further questions pertainig to my situation, please feel free ask.
Update: I have done some more google searching and I think that the problem may have something to do with .kl the files stored in /system/usr/keylayout. I was messing with these a few days ago (trying to add a deadzone to my ps3 controller[unsuccessfully]) and I may have messed something up, although if that is the case I don't know why the problem didn't appear earlier when I edited the files.

hello, i have a starmobile engage 8 tablet from Philippines that I was able to root. i guess the bootloader is LOCKED, there is NO RECOVERY, and I can't install one. usb debug mode is unfortunately DISABLED without thinking that my tablet will have problems. when i restarted the phone, it showed me splash screen/starmobile logo then followed by a blank screen. after around 5 minutes, it restarts and then same thing happens.
what can be done in this case? please help!:crying:
keep trying to fix it!

I feel your pain, I have the same unit with a different issue but my temporary fix might help you.
Rooted my phone and installed a game(was in the middle of copying a file to the obb ), forgot to activate modded play store and restarted the tablet trying to do a quick modded play store install. after the stupid move My tablet now keeps restarting and stops after the star mobile logo and restarts again and it just keeps restarting.
What I did is I randomly press the following keys to attempt finding the safe mode: home+volup, home+voldown, pow+volup and etc... I finally found the safe mode and did a factory reset which did nothing to fix the restarts. Try not doing this!
Then I pressed and hold both volume keys when the star mobile logo shows up and the red star mobile logo turns blue completing the boot process for some reason starting the tablet.
As of today my engage 8 still does the infinite restart if I restart it but I can bypass it with the method. Hope it helps you.
Planning to do a cache/dalvik cache wipe when my research is done to try and fix this tab, good luck to me...
thanks for your reply... what i thought was that starmobile technicians do not want to share the key combinations. and im glad that you figured it out. can you remember that specific combinations you used? so that i can try then...
just so you know, i sent the unit to star mobile for repair and they managed to fix it. unfortunately i made the same mistake so i just dumped it.

There are only a few buttons on the phone. I mean, if you have 3 buttons, there are 3 combinations.
Assuming your phone has 3 buttons try:
Power + Volume Up
Power + Volume Down
Power + Volume Up + Volume down
If your phone has 4 buttons also try:
Power + Vol Up + Home
Power + Vol Down + Home
Power + Vol Up + Vol Down + Home
NOTE: Press ALL the buttons and hold in the same time.
NOTE2: Try the combinations in the order from top to bottom
So I had cyanogenmod 11 installed on my phone, and i wanted to try carbon.
So I did the factory reset and wiped everything through TWRP recovery and it installed normally.
I rebooted my phone when it was done and it came to the welcome screen. I was excited because carbon wasn't working before.
But i can't click anything. My home and back buttons aren't working.
I tried putting it into recovery but its not working. The only buttons that work are the volume and power so i held them down just like you would to put it into recover but it won't work. I help them down for five minutes and nothing happens. And its weird because i can still controll volume and take screenshots, just not click anything or use the buttons. I really don't know what to do, so any suggestions are welcome. Please help!
Hello everyone. I have Katkiss Kitkat #19 and TWRP recovery 6.something but I can't remember which. Anyway, I use to reboot into recovery by holding down the Volume down, then press Volume up when prompted to get into recovery. Now the power and volume buttons are completely busted. I can't press any of them. And I need to go into recovery to flash the new Rom.
So, here is what I tried:
1. Rom Toolbox. I tried to "Reboot into recovery" option but it just reboots the ddevice.
2. Terminal emulator: su reboot recovery, it says reboot: no such order
3. Tried to hook it to my laptop and use ADB, but no devices attached. I have Windows 8.1 64 bit. I have Android drivers installed and in the device manager it say Asus ADB and it shows Asus in the "safely remove" but I still can't see it in the My computer. I have USB debugging on and it asked me to allow my laptop keys and I agreed. Still, ADB doesn't work.
I don't know what else can I do. I can't go into recovery, bootloader or APX mode without the power and volume buttons. Is there anything i can do, or am I stuck here?
Any help will be greatly appreciated...:crying:
There's a few different apps that let you boot to recovery
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.siriusapplications.quickboot
More
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=reboot to recovery&c=apps
When you say the power and volume buttons are completely busted, have you tried taking the plastic bezel off and pressing the micro buttons under the normal silver ones ?

I tried the first one and six from the second link and none of them work. Actually, when I was installing Xposed, I pressed reboot, but it said Reboot: No such tool. I don't know what's going on.
The problem with the power button is that my kid dropped the tablet many times and it got so many dents, so I took of the casing (or whatever it's called0 and then straightened it out, out the buttons in their places and then glued it in place. Now it's really hard to press the power button (the one underneath) but it works. But how can I do that every time I want to power off or reboot into recovery, specially if there is a boot loop. I can't do anything except pressing the power button.
That's why I wanted an easy solution at least to reboot recovery.
May be I should take off the casing one more time and try to fix the power and volume buttons one more time.
I just want to thank you for your super fast reply and taking the time to find those apps.
Thanks a lot...
In the past, while still on stock ROM,I have been using this tool to overcome the missing "reboot to recovery" option in the regular Asus power menu: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.transformer.recovery
Now I have tested it on KK #19 and this tool apparently does not reboot the tablet BUT:
when I run this tool and then reboot the tablet normally (with the power menu...) I get into recovery.
So if you are already able to reboot normally through Rom Toolbox you might try to run this one first before rebooting with Rom Toolbox.
NOTE I imagine you are perfectly aware that you are playing with fire here.
In case your tablet gets into a boot-loop while installing the new ROM, you might end up with a useless tablet. Is it really worth the risk?

OK, you did it. You got me scared, so I separated the casing in the power button part and clicked on the original button with a small screwdriver and it worked. Also the volume buttons. Now I don't know what to do. May be the buttons are broken from the inside. I'll try to see if those are sold on ebay or something. If not, I'll try to attach something to them from the underside.
Anyway, I'm really grateful that you made me take this step. I'll fix it tomorrow first thing in the morning. Well, we both know I'm not gonna sleep until I get it fixed, hahaha.
Again, thanks a lot...
Hi,
My Oneplus One boots only to the CWM recovery. I noticed that my volume down button not working. So I restarted the phone, and now it only boots to CWM only.
In the recovery, the volume down button still doesn't work. It looks like the button may be stuck? and my guess is it's initiating the volume button down + power button to boot to CWM.
But I also tested the Button Test function in CWM, and the down button doesn't even register.
Is there any way to bypass this? I don't need the volume button down to work necessarily, but I need my phone to work.
I'd appreciate if there's any other way to bypass this, or maybe modify CWM file to change the recovery button combo.
If the button is stuck, then no amount of altering CWM is going to help because you'll never be able to boot into the OS with a stuck volume button. You're going to need to physically inspect and fix that volume button. In the meantime in order to have a functional recovery, ditch CWM and flash TWRP, the UI is all touchscreen so no replying on buttons, and it's leaps and bounds better than CWM anyway.

Hey, Thanks for the reply.
I noticed a few more things, which makes me to believe that this is not a physical button problem.
First, whenever I charge the device, the device won't stay OFF. It constantly turns on automatically.
However, if I don't charge, the device will stay OFF.
Second, I can't even go to Bootloader. I tried "adb reboot bootloader" from the command prompt and the phone boots directly to CWM recovery.
Third, if the volume down button is stuck, wouldn't it be activated all the times? So when I'm in CWM, it'll constantly go down, and when I test on Button Test, it should register constantly.
But that's not happening. It's simply dead.
I'm going to try the RMA process, but meanwhile, I would be glad if someone has better idea with the new info I provided here.
Thanks
Im having the same issue did u get it fixed? plz help
Hey there,
I have a Lenovo A916 which was pretty reliable. However, it is currently stuck in a boot loop. It wasn't the average type of bricking where one was trying to flash a new rom or where one was trying to root the phone. It was one where a vital app was deleted (I believe the OS UI, I may be wrong) and thus it won't restart properly. I have searched several forums and researched several processes but I wanted more advice before I tried to unbrick the phone myself.
Unfortunately, the drawbacks are that there isn't much information out there about the particular type of phone, and it makes it hard to apply methods that are made for more popular models.
The phone is rooted but the boot loader is locked. Obviously I cannot go into USB debugging mode but the phone does have a memory card slot. I have both the original and a custom rom downloaded and the relevant drivers. I even have Lenovo's LeTools.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Have you tried factory reset? I have the same phone.
Turn it off, then hold the middle of the volume rocker firmly and keep holding it while you turn on the phone - you will see a green tilted android.
Press on/off button 1 time
use the volume rocker to move down to wipe data/factory reset and press the in the middle of the volume rocker. Then on the next screen move down to Yes and press the middle of the volume rocker.
Your phone will now factory reset - wait until its done.
it will restart by itself - if not, then move to reboot now and press the middle of the volume rocker.
Hopefully this will fix your issue - though now your facing another one - there might be spyware on your phone and you have to re-root it and depending on the method install either superuser or supersu(best), then remove the spyware with malwarebytes, avast, 360 security. Make a list of those that can't be cleaned.
Then disable the offending apps.
BE CAREFUL! I'm not responsible for what you do!
If you by accident choose the wrong thing, then hold the power button for 30 seconds and your phone will restart. Turn if off and try again.
Be advised that you will loose all your apps and files, you should remove your MicroSD card first.
Good luck
Factory reset won't work.
You said you just flashed a new rom right?
If you done factory reset, it wouldn't reset your phone COMPLETELY. It will just reset the settings and the data.
What you need to do is you need to find the stock rom of your device. Then reflash it into your device.

No, I didn't flash a new ROM. Actually, I was using the stock ROM when the UI got deleted. I do have the stock ROM however. What is the best way to flash the ROM to my device?
