[Completed] Retrofitting Note 5 guts to a Note 3 - XDA Assist

How hard would this be? Is it even possible? I have a Note 3 with a bad motherboard, and a Note 5 with a broken digitizer. I'm also a woodworker, so making a custom case won't be much of an issue, and I think I would probably only need the rear cover.
Have any of you guys done something like this?
Are there any schematics or diagrams I would need to convert any of the connections?
Thanks in advance!

Hello,
Nope, not gonna happen. The hardware is not even close to the same. Put this idea to rest, you would be better off to look on eBay to find either a Note 3 with a broken screen but good motherboard and good ESN or a cheap replacement motherboard. For the Note 5 you can find a cheap replacement digitizer or a Note 5 with bad ESN but good display

I reckon it'll be expensive to replace too, the note 1 screen and digitizer cost $220 before being replaced.... And that was only about 1/2 the size of the 10.1....

But only digitizer is cracked, not the LCD which is expensive. I found that they're around 60$.
But the digitizer for tab 10.1 is much cheaper, that's why i want to replace with it.

no, i haven't disassambled it yet.
The trouble is, with most screens, that the digitiser is glued to the screen and is a major mongrel to get off without damaging the LCD... The note 10.1 has a wacom digitiser in it so I'd assume that would put the price up...
I remember there was someone in the note forum that said he had replaced the digitiser but it was not for the lay person to do. Most people who tried tended to break the LCD and then had to fork over the $220 anyway. Plus the postage, most coming from China, could be 2 - 3 weeks long....

Fair enough, I haven't pulled apart my note (with no intention of doing so any time soon) so haven't looked to see. Also lack of a technical manual doesn't help....
digitizer replacement
I will be swapping the glass on my n8013 shortly and I'm wondering if anyone else has had any success with the less expensive lenses available on eBay. It seems that gtab 1&2 digi's are the same part (yes they are serviceable without melting the glue and prying the glass off) and several of the listings I've seen claim n8000-series compatibility as well. Other listings advertise that they are only for the 8000 series; this may just be marketing, as they appear to be the same part and the same price (almost all are $40-50 except the some that list tab 1 compatibility, as low as $25 for these).
My question is: i know the note uses a "dual digitizer" for more accurate tracking, etc. Am I going to lose accuracy with another digi? Does anyone know how the guts of this thing are designed, will the lens not make a big difference? Or do these parts actually come with the dual digitizer built in? I know these eBay digi's will fit but I don't want my Note to suck at doing Note things, haha
ANY input on this matter is appreciated
Personly I wouldn't risk it. I know that the spen can't be used as a pointer on the tab and tab 2. How much of that is due to the glass itself, I don't know but if you go the cheap way, you may find your s pen no longer works.
To me, it isn't worth the risk, but if you do it, let us know how you got on.

Hi,
It happened to me once, about 2 months ago...
Euro GT-N8000, ITALY
I bought the replacement digitizer for the GT-N8000 from a store in California for around 70$.
I managed to cleanly open the tablet (I followed a video from yuotube) only to find that the replacement digitizer was a couple of mm too big.
Obviously it didn't fit...
At the end I had to send that tablet to a local Samsung service, and I had to pay 250 € to get it fixed. They replaced the digitizer, the lcd panel and the metal body.

Wow that is almost the price of a new one now
success!
Ordered the Note 8000 8010 8013 replacement digi from ebay seller Gadgetfix in California. Unfortunately I didnt order one with the matching grey border around the screen, my new one is black instead but I dont mind. I opened the Note and carefully proceeded to dismantle it, taking extra care with the shards of glass that were stuck in the screen bezel with adhesive. After reassembly and turning it back on with my fingers crossed, it works perfectly! S pen, airview, hover, all 100% functional, and no issues with sizing, etc. I checked the part numbers on the original and replacement and they seemed to match up, although they were off by a digit or two, presumably because of the difference in color. Note: I made sure to buy the model that ONLY listed compatibility with the Note line, and didn't have model numbers listed for any of the Tab series (those were about $25 and mine was $45).
Anyway, I now have a clean-looking, fully functional , killer tablet and it only cost me an extra $45 and some sweat to fix my glass . Pics to follow.

its easier to just buy a new housing unit on ebay. The dummy models don't have a digitizer in the screen, and are not normally able to be taken apart.

What can I expect to sell an N5 for?

There is a scratch on the display which is barely noticable and affects nothing. The rear facing cam does not work, and the phone only works in speaker mode.
If I were to list this locally what kind of offers could I expect?
Check out kijiji and that will give you an idea.
I was lucky and got a nexus with a busted screen and sticky power button for 20. I put everything into a new lcd from Aliexpress. I also got a bricked nexus 5 with a perfect screen and all working internals, except the motherboard, for 50.
I would say you would be lucky to get 80.

Thanks for the reply. The display looks amazing and has a screen protector on it and the scratch is minor.
Gonna take it up to a cell shop tomorrow and see how much it will cost to fix vs how much I can get to sell.
The ear piece doesn't work? Is that why the phone can only be used in speakerphone mode?

I believe so. I took it apart and all the connections look fine.
The camera is cheap to replace if you order a replacement from eBay or Aliexpress. For the earpiece issue, there could be an issue with the motherboard connector or the earpiece itself.
Sounds like you are handy and these two things should be easy to remedy.
In its current state no more than $100. Most likely $50-70
I'm thinking about buying one myself. There's a seller on my local Craigslist that's selling white 32gig versions for $130.. brand new, never used, and still in the box.
Just to let you know what a new one can go for.
Sent from my Galaxy S5 using Tapatalk
130 is not bad at all but seems almost too low for those specs.
Gonna run it up today and let you know how I make out. I don't need he phone, so am just gonna sell it for whatever I can get. Well, I won't be low balled.
Good luck. Let us know what sort of offers you get.

Low Priced Note Edge Broken Screen Protector...Help me decide myself!

Hi there, greetings from Roumania
I found a Note Edge at 230 euro but it looks like this: see the attachements!
Currently, I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 which looks incredibly well...no breaks, or scratches or anything else...but I'm looking forward to change my phone to Note 4 or Note Edge...do you have any idea how much would it cost me to change that broken glass or if it's possible to replace only the glass? I read that for this kind of phone, you can't replace the glass only, you have to replace the whole touchscreen, is it real? I really need your answers from your own experience...Thanks in advance!
Still...is it worthing to sell my 1 year guarantee S5 for 220 euro and get that broken Note Edge? I'm very puzzled
I wouldn't.
Give a few more months and somebody will be selling one cheap enough anyway.

Is it true that the Digitizer and LCD are one piece on Refurbished Note 5?

I brought my Galaxy Note 5 to a repair shop to have the charging port replaced and the Technician told me that he couldn't do that without also replacing the glass as there was a deep scratch in the digitizer and would probably break during the disassembly.
But after I negotiated a screen replacement along with the charging port replacement I was told that the digitizer on my Note 5 couldn't be replaced without replacing the LCD as well. I asked why and was told that my phone was refurbished and refurbished note 5's don't have separate digitizers and LCDs. I argued that I got the phone new at Best Buy the day it came out and it couldn't be refurbished but he showed me a little "R" on the back of the phone under the glass to prove it. I wasn't about to spend $250 on a Note 5 that I only use for wifi since I upgraded to the Note 8.
But I do use the Note 5 all the time because I can't customize the Note 8 due to the locked bootloader and I'll buy the Digitizer and charging port and replace them myself. I just don't know if the what the Technician told me about the LCD is true.
