So I have a j700p on boost, rooted it thanks to messi, installed xposed (credits to him too) and I'm using flashfire to flash zips. The problem is I want to install a custom rom and experiment with more risky things, which I'm too afraid to do because I can't backup and restore easily without a custom recovery.
Now I was doing some reading looking for guaranteed compatible roms for my phone, and a couple posts said that you don't need cr too install a custom rom since we have flashfire, however, that still doesn't cover backing up the phone and restoring without cr available. Should I brick my device or get it stuck in a boot loop I don't want to have to wipe and start with stock rom then reroot and install all my stuff again and again.
That leaves me stuck wondering what I should do. Should I just wait patiently while someone develops a cr for it (which I haven't seen anyone post about doing)? Or man up and hope some of these work? I really want to try to create a compatible twrp, but I know nothing about coding with xda, or with any language for that matter. I wouldn't know where to begin with it anyways.
Sorry if it seems like this isn't really a question but the above paragraph contains the questions I have.

What id do since its a custom rom and a custom roms dont require the userdata partition with the custom system. Stock roms require a userdata partition with the stock system to be flashed in a tar. id make a backup of the custom roms system, boot, and custom recovery in img format and then use unified toolkits basic toolkit to make the system and boot and custom recovery img a single odin flashable tar with the auto detect partitions option before it builds it.. test it just to make sure it flashes.

Thx for the fast reply like always coffee! That's the thing though, I'm on stock rom rooted and xposed, but I'm trying to get custom rom, but there's no custom recovery for boost mobile j7. I'm not worried about actually installing without the custom recovery (thank you once again chainfire) my issue is I can't restore any rooted backups on a bricked or bootlooping phone WITH that same bricked or bootlooping phone because because the recovery is stock, so the only option is to flash a stock rom back on, root it again, xpose it, then try again. The solution to this would be to make an Odin, adb, or fastboot flashable back up of the rooted stock rom I have now, but I can't make a flashable backup like that because there's no custom recovery to make one, do you see my dilemma?

You could make a stock tar rooted with stock recovery but youd have to include youre userdata partition since its on stock and you could do that with the toolkit and it would be odin flashable..
So do i have to use partitions backup and restore to get the partitions? because boot and recovery dont show up in the list, also my J7 isnt showing up on toolkit either with drivers installed and updated.
edit: Wont show up in windows explorer but shows in devices, tried switching to ptp mode and still no luck, trying to unistall driver and reinstall it but it looks like its also having trouble doing that
edit2: Got my phone to show up, and all is good with pc to phone connection, but the app still cant detect boot or recovery for some reason. I tried searching and so far i cant find anyone else who had the same problem, nor do any search results for that even exist. Ill keep trying though.

So I have a I-9020A with at&t. I have rooted followed by flashing -su and roms instructions using instructions on the net. But after following that process and then going backwards (flashing stock w/ no root locking bootloader) I have realized after that I have more questions.
So first: Unlocking the Bootloader erases the phone. Unlocking the bootloader is needed to flash CWM and SU. I have read many many things about NANDROID, how is NANDROID different from CWM?
So I guess my next question is: How does one remove SU? In the process of rooting and flashing CWM and ROMs I make a backup prior to going to deep... that Backup will have SU, I have unrooted, but SU is still on the phone and I cannot seem to remove it.
Another question is: where are the data files on the phone for apps like Plants vs Zombies? I would like to move them off my phone prior to root, though I'm not sure if that is possible (is it?).
The last question is: If I wanted to muck around with ICS and the source code, is it as simple as flashing the source as explained on the google site? because they make it sound rather easy.

Sounds like you should have read more.
When you open the bootloader (the lock) it will wipe your personal data off the phone (not SD storage). This just means you get it as if you just bought it from the store. There is no way around it but happens only once and you'll never have to do it again. Unless you lock it back
Once the bootloader is unlocked you can now flash a custom recovery such as CWM which will let you manage and back up your phone with whatever ROM you want/have.
Once recovery is on your device you also have to root the phone. For this you'll need a zip flashable file with the superuser apk and SU binary files. Flash it in recovery and you should be good to go.
The last step is to install a ROM of your choice. You can just run what the phone has and it will work fine and even take updates without a problem. However, every time you want to flash something you'll need to flash CWM again because the stock image flashes the default recovery on reboot. There is a file you can delete to prevent this from happening. I forgot the path so look around. However, I would recommend you flash a stock ROM which already comes loaded with good stuff and all other things are done for you Just stop by the development section and pick a ROM you like.
Naroid is just a backup.
Oh, and BTW, mocking around with ICS... I would leave that for later. First get your head around basic flashing/rooting stuff. Changing the source code requires knowledge of code and even phone hardware. I'm guessing it's not for you just yet

i was going to write something similar. toonhead85 you should do a bit more research and reading before you start hacking on your phone. youve hearts in the right place, but youre not quite ready just yet. at least take small steps at first
A little more clarification or nandroid backups:
Nandroid is a specific type of backup of the phone's system files. I think that includes system rom and radio. I not sure if any data is included in the backup. You should make a nandroid backup of the stock rom bbefore you flash any custom roms. If something goes wrong with a rom flash or if you want to restore to a previous stock or custom rom, you can restore from the backups you have made. You create these nandroid backups by booting into recovery and selecting the backup option (I think maybe named backup and restore). Backups are usually found on your SD card, but you can copy them to your computer to save additional copies.
If you want to also backup apps, get a good backup program from the market. Two that I have used are Titanium Backup for Root and MyBackups for Root. They can backup and restore apps and data as well as system data.

But something I wanna know is this: If in flash CWM, can I use it without root? Say to make a backup of the stock rom before flashing SU? I only ask because I am currently at work and can't test the idea.
Another question is this: I know how to get to the stock recovery, but from what I read you use the VOL UP to get the "Menu". When I push any (hardware) button I get nothing and the image being displayed is an Android with a triangle and there is an exclimation point in it. Any thoughts?
a nandroid saves everything in your phone, just how it is at that moment. and when you restore it, your phone goes back to that very moment you made that nandroid backup. all your data remain. everything. its like you didnt do anything in between backing up and restoring

You don't need root to backup but remember that when you reboot it will flash back to stock recovery (the triangle). You can simply repeat the adb command to flash CWM again.

So I could flash unlock my bootloader > flash CWM > Make a backup and save it to my computer then when i reboot my phone it would automatically reflash the stock recovery? and if this is correct, then all i would need to do is flash CWM to restore the saved backup?
So here's a question, is it the action of flashing SU that keeps the phone from removing CWM and reinstalling stock recovery?
You must rename the /system/etc/install-recovery.sh file or it will keep replacing the stock recovery. See this post, item 2.

Best way is to do it manually. You can find all of the steps required here. The only difference is that you should be flashing the latest recovery from here and the latest superuser.zip file when flashing with recovery.
Note, unlocking bootloader will cause loss of EVERYTHING on the device that you have put on there (sdcard, apps, data partition, etc).

You suppose thats better to do manually so I will have latest version of recovery and superuser?
And yes I am aware of the data loss waited sometime to finish all my games now I am ready to lose all my app data.

Do it this way. The one click is fine but using Android SDK and going through all that will help you in the long run. This way you know the process in case something goes wrong. It may be confusing at first but worth it. It will teach you a lot more than flashing a one click!
I learnt a lot from this and feel much more experienced and capable because of it. I know I will be able to solve any major issues using Android Debug Bridge (adb).
Okay then I am gonna try the manual way and gonna take out time for it. Now I just need to know what do I flash once I have unlocked bootloader and installed CWR?
I just want the stock google rom and receive OTA if nexus S continues to be supported by google.
You won't need to reinstall the ROM if you are currently on 4.0.4. The ROM stays there as-is. Feel free to do your wipes in recovery and reflash stock 4.0.4 through CWM if you must. You flash CWM to your phone and then superuser through CWM.
Steps:
Setup ADB/fastboot
Bootloader --> fastboot oem unlock --> agree
Bootloader --> fastboot flash recovery recovery.img --> this will give you CWM
Recovery --> flash superuser.zip and, if you must, wipe and reflash ICS (flash su AFTER this if done)
Reboot --> bingo
Also note, with stock ROMs it will replace your current recovery with stock recovery on each boot. If you want to keep CWM, delete /system/etc/flash-recovery.sh when you first boot. You'll have to reflash recovery afterward and it will stick.
Oh I was of the impression that unlocking bootloader wipes everything means it wipes the OS as well. That is nice if it's just data and not the OS, dont think I would reflash it if it's not needed.
Can you explain what you mean by will have to reflash recovery? I will have to do that even if I delete that file on first boot? And whats the drawback if I dont delete that file and stick with stock recovery?
As soon as you boot into stock android it will replace the recovery. So if that file is there on first boot, it will replace it while booting and you will be without CWM (stock instead). After first boot you can delete the file (you can reflash a ROM which has this deleted, or delete it yourself from a stock ROM, or even use adb or a recovery-based file manager to delete the file, then you won't have this problem at all) and it will no longer reflash stock recovery, but you would already have the stock one and need to flash CWM one more time to get it to stick. Easiest way is to just flash CWM and delete it within android imo, saves mounting commands and the such.
No downside really. If you need to flash something for one reason or another you'll just have to reflash CWM before you do so. Once rooted, ROM Manager can do this for you within android anyway.
I had already downloaded and installed the drivers from the one click root thread and my computer shows the android adb thing when I connect my phone with USB debugging.
But as you guys suggested I am gonna do the manual way. So do I just skip the installing driver on computer in the part 1 of this guide?

Because you have a Nexus S with amoled. That's the i9020. The i9023 is SLCD.

He has the i9023 to my knowledge. It is completely normal, though. Bootloader and recovery for i9020 and i9023 series are the same, this can be attributed to the issue with 4.0.3 recovery backlight not turning on.
If fastboot recognises your phone in the bootloader (the fastboot menu), your drivers are installed an working perfectly.
Finally got to the unlock bootloader screen, didnt do it just yet but now I know how to do it.
I must say the guide is a bit outdated, the software has changed quite a bit seems. The most frustrating part was that the fastboot file is actually in the platform tools folder instead of the tools folder which I didnt figure for a while. I will hold off rooting when I have a whole day off because once I lose everything I would be very anxious to get my phone back to normal which will take time.
Thanks for the help harbb, if I have any problem flashing recovery and superuser I will come back for more help.
And yes I have the LCD version i9023.
Btw the guide said the fastboot will be in the tools folder but the tools folder had a read me that "adb has moved to the platform tools folder" this is how I figured to go to that folder and thats where the fastboot file actually was.
Now it says I should put the recovery image in the tools folder so should I do that or put it in the platform tools folder?
In the instructions for the flashing recovery I am not understanding one thing.

Don't power off or reboot the phone. After you flash recovery go straight into the recovery menu and root, flash custom ROMs, kernels, etc. You can transfer files to flash via the mounts and storage --> mount usb storage menu. After this feel free to reboot.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (US Wifi+IR) P3113 [ROM Build Number: IMM76D.P3113UEBLH2] which is still 100% stock. I plan on installing a custom rom, but first I want to make a complete backup of everything.
I know I need to use a custom recovery (I plan on using ClockworkMod) and flash the custom rom. I don't have any problems with that part.
I also have all of my data already backed up. I plan on doing a full factory reset before installing anything anyway.
My main issue is that I want to backup the original stock ROM and all other partitions/images before making any permanent changes.
Since the device doesn't support fastboot I can't just "fastboot boot cwm-recovery.img" to do a temporary boot to backup the stock rom and recovery. All the instructions I've seen indicate I must first flash a new recovery image then boot the device from that. This would cause me to not have a backup of the stock recovery image.
I didn't see any backup options in Heimdall or ODIN either. No luck with Check Fus either.
Is there a way to backup the stock recovery image without flashing anything to the device first?
I have looked at sammobile at the P3113 firmwares, but I can't be sure those apply to my version (US WiFi + *IR blaster*) or would have the stock recovery image. This is exactly what I have been trying to do too. I have searched the forums and google and haven't been able to figure out how to do this either. I was actually fixing to post the same questions myself and thought I should do one last search before I did, which lead me to this thread
I have the same tab and build (P3113 - ROM Build Number: IMM76D.P3113UEBLH2). As an android newbie I have been reading/researching for hours a day since Christmas and there is still a lot I don't understand. This is the first step I would like to take though and I intend on doing a full factory reset before installing anything too.

You should find and download the stock rom for your device on the net. I myself do not recommend you to install custom rom as it can brick ur device.
For the backup:-
1. For the backup of your apps download this app (App Backup and Restore) from the play store. It can backup ur apps and then can also restore them back but also dont forget to take the backup of this app itself.
2. Connect your tablet/phone to your pc/laptop and then copy all the files in your SD card and Device and store them to seperate folders on your pc/laptop.
3. Now the backup of all your files is created.
According to my information you cannot backup your current rom you will have to download the stock rom from the net which you need and then fla**** in case of a mishappening or incase you wish to revert back.

@kunalthakur - There isn't an official Samsung download source that one can use. Most of the other downloads I've seen have had the recovery.img modified to enable the backup in the first place. We want a trustworthy (verified no malicious software added) stock OEM rom/recovery with no modifications.
I have had some initial success getting the Samsung Kies software to attempt to download the current official ROM from official Samsung servers. I guess Samsung wants people to only download via Kies instead of offering it on their website to reduce the load on their servers and prevent end-users from flashing the wrong ROM because they didn't know what they were doing.
I will update if I have success getting a clean download.

That site didn't have a ROM for the US (Wifi+IR) GT-P3113
I did however notice that an official ROM update has just become available in Samsung Kies.
Version ending in LK7 (update from LH2).
I'm going to try to save a copy of the download for backup purposes.

I'm using Galaxy Note 10.1 (N8013, UEALI3).
As our hardware and software are almost identical, I'll assume things will be the same for you and me.
How to create a full backup of your device, without touching anything?
There must be a way, but I also couldn't find it.
So, I found a way that just works as we expect.
To create a full stock device backup, with all images and partitions, without rooting, you'll have to....
Flash CWM! No, please, wait, let me finish...
When you flash a custom Recovery, it is actually not something permanent.
Once you boot your stock rom with stock kernel, your custom recovery is overwritten with the default one.
So, you can flash your CWM, and reboot your device immediately to it.
If you let your stock ROM boots, you are going back to stock recovery.
EXCEPTION:
- When you boot to CWM, choose "Reboot", you'll be given the following option: "ROM may flash stock recovery on boot. Fix? This can not be undone.". If you choose "Yes", you'll never get to stock again, even while booting stock rom.
So, flashing a custom recovery is actually very similar to "fastboot boot recovery recovery.img", as no permanent damages are made.
Finally, that's what you'll have to do:
1) Use Oding to Flash CWM. DO NOT Restart your device from ODIN.
2) Force turn off your device (press power button for > 8 seconds)
3) Boot to recovery (power button + volume up)
4) Make a full backup! In this backup, you'll have the CWM recovery.
5) Reboot your device.
6) Boot normally, and copy your backup from SDCard to your computer.
How to restore the stock I just saved?
1) Flash CWM again if needed.
1.1) If you want to get rid of the binary count, you'll have to make CWM permanent.. for a while.
1.2) Boot into CWM, go to Reboot Device, and choose "Yes - Make it permanent".
1.3) Boot your rooted ROM, download and execute TriangleAway.
1.4) Ok, your download count is zero.2) Now, go back to CWM and restore your backup.
3) This time, you have your stock rom + stock kernel, but still have the CWM recovery.
4) Boot your stock rom
5) Now, you have your stock rom + stock kernel + stock recovery.
I know this is not what you REALLY wanted (extract stock images, including stock recovery image), I wanted that to..
But this just works.

I feel awesome.
But then i read this
"With ROM Manager you can back up your existing ROM, flash new ROMs, and install custom themes or kernels. It features a long list of ROMs which is frequently updated and you can install ROMs to the SD card or OTA (over the air). If you want to unlock features like premium ROMs, update notifications, and automatic backups, then you’ll need to spring for the premium version."
So now i am trying to figure out what custome themes are and what custom kernels are compared to the Avatar ROM i installed.

Now let me put this simple. The ROM is the operating system of your device (OS). You know what a theme is. Its just changing the way things look can be your icons, interface shade/colour,etc. Its just visuals. And the next is kernel. Kernels are the thing which links your OS and hardware. Literally they are responsible for the way your phone behaves. Custom kernels has tweaks whicj can improve your device's performance, the battery drain, way your processor's I/O works.. It helps you to do things like over clock and under clock,etc. But it is risky as your manufacturer has made a stable kernel for your device and these custom kernels may be unstable. Sure thing you dont want to mess with em unless you know what you are doing. Now as you have choice to do things like changing ROMs and Kernels using Rom manager, i would recommend you to use CWM and flash zip files which has ROMs and Kernels made specifically for your device as this is more safe. But be sure to have a backup as installing something not meant for your device will brick it. Dont worry. Have a backup and also Odin with stock rom incase its really hard bricked. Since i have already rooted my device. I have installed Avatar ROM and tested some others...
But i never made any backups... Is it to late for that?
Is my best choice to download Titanium Backup and backup everything with that application?
You said something else about Odin, how to backup aswell with that?

CWM is clockword mod recovery. An advanced recovery which has more options than stock recovery. I guess you already has cwm. Probably it must be what you used to flash the Rom and clear cache. Now to Titanium backup, it backs up the whole phone, so do cwm. As we use CWM for our flashing and other things, cwm backups should be enough unless you got space on your sd to have many backup files. And if your phone is working perfectly right now then its never late to take a cwm backup as if you ever encounter a bootloop while tweaking, you can restore your phone. Sometimes even cwm fails to fix your phone. This is where Odin comes in handy. Odin is a pc software which can be used to flash the stock Rom of your device. You can search and find the Stock Rom for your device and region if you google. You can find how to flash using odin guides out there. Flashing stock rom via odin will remove every traces of ever tweaking your phone which includes rooting, flashing of custom roms and kernels,etc. Your device will be just like when you bought it. This is helpful when you want to take your phone to service centres as rooting and doing other stuffs will void your warranty. Hopes this helps...

I can tho not figure out how to know for sure if i have CWM or not. I have no apps called that.
And how do i do a CWM backup if i can start CWM some other way than using an app icon ?

CWM is a shell and not an app and it cannot be installed on android os so you cant access it through your Rom but you can run it whenever you need it but through stock recovery. CWM comes as a .zip file which should be selected from stock recovery or in other words flash it. It will open cwm recovery. And you can access advanced recovery options which stock recovery doesn support. Well search and download cwm for your device, place it sd card root(not inside any folder), run it using install update option on your stock recovery, it will open cwm which will be in yellow colour themed. Select backup and restore opt in it and select backup. That will take care of taking full backup of your device.

I have now a CWM backup, Titan Backup and installed Odin and found my stock ROM to use if things goes to ****.

Well.. Thats good to hear. And there was none other than me. And anyway a small precaution, never interrupt while you are flashing through Odin coz it will hard brick your device which is literally R.I.P to your device.
I have done everything that I can trying to flash ROMs into my Pixel (sailfish). I have tried 2 different ROMs and none of them seem to work, the ROM doesn't seem to be installing and I don't know why. It boots up to the Google logo and that's as far as it goes, it then starts looping and the only thing I could do is restore my nandroid backup. It sometimes also boots to partition B idk why.
I do the clean wipe, I then flash the ROM zip, I then immediately flash the twrp 3.3.0.0 zip file, I reboot the phone back to recovery afterwards and then flash the necessary gapps. Am I doing something wrong? I'm already on stock Android 9, no ROM has actually been successfully flashed on my device.
I suggest the Unified Android Toolkit if you arent super knowledgeable. You just need to install that, download the appropriate factory image from googles site for sailfish. Put the img file in the Put google factor images here folder in unified android toolkit and you can use that to flash it. I do it this way just because its so easy. As long as you are unlocked bootloader you should be able to flash whatever image that you want. Let me know if you need specifics.
What ROM are you flashing? Have you tried flashing without gapps?
