Hi developers,
I started to -try- and develop an app for my fun, and a few questions came up to my mind - obviously they're not too relevant to me at this point, but I'd like it to be more clear:
1) Do I need to backup my code to websites like GitHub? Or I should save it on personal storage so it will be private? (Or both?)
2) I am learning from an Android development tutorial, so what happens if the app is actually successful, and there would be a demand for it on iOS or other operating systems? Does that mean the app idea might be stolen and be made for iOS and I will have nothing to do with it? Or it can actually happen even within Android (idea theft)
2.1) Regarding the above concern: I was thinking about learning to develop Hybrid apps, but heard they're not too good right now, are there any examples of decent Hybrid apps now?
Thanks,
Pan
you can develop both android app and ios app simultaneously.

Thank you!
But how exactly? Hybrid apps? Or there are migration tools from Java to Objective-C / Swift ? I mean, developing alone for both languages should be quite hard isn't it? (Not talking about me, but even for skilled developers)

As far as i know, there are many programmers including me write native codes for both ios android app.
Of course, it takes double time.
I never thought it's an easy task to develop an app.

Wow Thank you! I didn't really think that's the case, so I guess I should focus on 1 language now (Java) before studying Swift as well!

Would be helpful if you also included the types of programs you were interested in working on.
Good idea
Its a good idea if we all freshers hook up together. wht you say? and after that we will get some experienced developer to lead us

For android always java is best(according to the arcticles i read) so obviously JAVA
I know an app I would pay for is one that could control the video functions of a PS3 with my phone. I would think it is possible since the the PS3 remote uses bluetooth, but I'm not a developer so it might not be possible.
I don't know if you've done this already but google provides all the sdk material on their android developers site. They also give instructions on how to get started using the sdk. Pretty much everything seems to be built on java. Have fun!
Google provides almost all the tutorials and instructions you could ever need to begin developing.

yea you should start at http://developer.android.com/index.html if you know java you should be good to go after reading and doing the tutorials
Thanks
I already read those things. Anyway thanks for your support and encouragment. and im now done with
->installed eclipse
->installed android sdk
->connected both eclipse and android sdk
-> now reading a book on how to develop android apps(in chapter 3 now)
All i need
-> some good friends(those who like to develop android apps, its okay if you are noobs)
->One experienced developer to guide me [this is optional ;-)]

HAHA...pretty much me too. Been debating about getting started for just over a year now. (Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Flash, Actionscript3, HTML, javascript, ~coldfusion, ~php, learning C#, can read VB, etc.)
Coming at this from a designing for training view. Been 15 yrs in technical training and looking to learn more. I got a few project ideas already and two things I really want...(which is what I am using for motivation)
As for the google tutorials...hello worlds really don't get you very far and I have looked out on web for other tuts. They all seem to have issues though...
Would appreciate feedback on the following....
-- This site/tut seems to 'assume' a whole lot and the program doesn't even work:
=== http://androidcore.com/android-programming-tutorials/182-fancy-listviews-part-one.html
(this one seems to not be showing any errors in SDK [it was first time, but not after restart] but it force closes in my emulator every time)
--This site/tut looked a bit more promising but is also has stuff that doesn't seem to work:
=== http://androidwizard.net/2010/05/create-a-context-menu-on-top-of-a-listview/
(no such thing as a OnPopulateContextMenuListener according to SDK and google site, switch(aItem.getId()) is not a supported method according to SDK, .getItem(menuInfo.position) cannot be resolved...all things a newb is at a loss to fix)
So...I am actually looking either for better tuts that get more in depth than hello world or someone from those sites that I can correspond with (as a trainer my OCD is really bothered by missing info in what look like the right kind of tut.)
Anyway...jenod...if you get some newbs together to work on stuff...I'd be interested.
Thanks for your feedback.. wil surely PM u if i get some(i mean developers)..
(why) does Android
Know what would be totally awesome? If someone like (why the lucky stiff) wrote something poigniant, beautiful and easy-to-follow to lead someone into Android app development! Something that reads almost like his Poigniant Guide to Ruby or like Chris Pine's Learn to Program.
Ya I have just started in android development. I have had many years of experience in all sorts of languages java, perl, python, c++, c#, and c. I also have a start on one project that would be great to have a group of people to work together with. I am very interested with this. Hope this works out, shoot me a PM if you want.
Hey guys!
awesome idea, i study informatics in second year now and iam just done with my JAVA lessons. Maybe i could help u, cuz i want to learn programming apps for andoid in my holiday too.
I also have an Idea for an app.
So PM me if u still need some help.

Please PM if you would like to make a team, I too am interested and have multiple ideas for apps that can be made and released quickly
Thanks
I have to really thank you ppl for your piceless support.

PM'd, any suggestions for apps to make as our starting point?
Hey idk if you all have seen this yet, but it is worth checking out. Google has a free software developing tool in beta at the site http:// appinventor .googlelabs .com
The beta requires an invite much like google voice but it looks to have some potential.
(type the url into the internet, I had to add spaces because I cannot post urls yet)

It will not be as powerful as straight coding. It is meant to allow people to make little apps for themselves. One review I read even indicated that inventor apps will not be allowed in market.
(This is all early speculation, but hey it is what I read today as I went ahead and submitted my info for an invite...LOL)
Coming from Macromedia/Adobe...this would be kind of like Captivate is to Flash is to Actionscript. This would be Captivate...simple but simple.
Hey this sounds like a great idea, hope everything works out. We need take over apples app market!

Hi all,
I searched here on Android forum but I did'nt find any reference to this very nice development tool:
http://www.basic4ppc.com/
does someone of you know it? what do you think about it?
I find it very interesting, special for people (like me) that has some programming skill but not a specific java knowledge... it costs a reasonable price (starting from 39$) and it seems really powerfull, with a very original integrated designer tool... I'm thinking to buy it... I would like to have your dev's impressions and evaluations...
[mod edit]
I am using it and I think it is an excellent development tool.
Takes a lot lesser time than Java and if you are familiar with VB or any other Basic, then you will be up to speed in no time.
Besides they have very good support.
Any more reviews? I'm very interested in this application.
love it
personally i love it. the fact that its fast (and uses basic ) . its just a great program. they also added error support for your internal coding mistakes....so they are really moving forward...if your a student you can get a %50 discount on the enterprise edition . ( i did )
i had the same issue
thank you guys for sharing
I am also interested
I am just learning to make apps, I literally have no experience yet. Would Basic4android be good for the type of app I'm trying to make?
I am needing to make a fairly simple, mostly text-based app, kind of like a user manual/instruction guide. Key features I am needing for this app would be:
*a "find" like CTRL+F to find words or phrases
*an index to jump to specific sections
*rip/copy protection so people can't steal the text and put it on a different device or computer
*smooth scrolling and fit-to-screen text
I know nothing about coding but I am very willing to learn! if this program makes it more simple, please let me know!

Basic for android could and would work. It is based off of visual basic. Which is a windows based code format...
I would recommend learning JAVA. Basic for Android is mostly for people who already Know visual basic....such as myself...
Learn Java. There are MANY xda tutorials on it.

Yes, B4A and B4i are both awesome, easy to learn and very powerful, best on the market, no exceptions.
Hi,
I currently am new to android and am starting to love it. I currently am a developer for the Apple App store and would like to transfer my Xcode over to android and start doing code in the android SDK. I have the Xcode and was wondering if anyone could convert it for me or send me to someone/somewhere that could help me convert the code for a small fee or for free.
The app is a simple navigation app that should be pretty simple to setup and initiate. I'm basically done with dumb apple stores and their rules that I can't make more apps because their tight wads. Anyways... any help would be great.
Thanks,
Brandon
nvm delete....

Where does he say anything about Warez? He developed an App for the App Store and now he wants to convert it for Android use.
you got me on that one i completely overlooked that part lol my bad.
If you know how to develop in JAVA then you may have to write your code for your app again. It isn't easy to just "port" iPhone applications to Android.
if it were as easy as porting code from objective c to java then the market would be flooded with tons more iphone apps... you have to rewrite the app from a programming sense pretty much. there are tools with which you can write apps from scratch that will work on both platforms but you can't send xcode to android and expect anything.
Sent from my MIUI SCH-i500
I dont expect to convert it without any hard work. I basically am wanting to give the code to someone. Who maybe for a small fee. Can recreate the app for the android. I know it probably isn't going to be super cheap, but since the idea is already there. I was just wondering if anyone would be able to help me out on this issue. I just mainly want to have someone recreate my app, and then possibly do a small overview of how to make it function like my apple app in a sense.
Android Studio and XCode are completely different. You should rewrite the application if you are going native. You can use HTML tools such as Intel XDK, PhoneGap, Cordova for cross-platform apps but they don't have the power of native development.
I was wondering what developers thought about using eclipse. Is it easy to use or is it not. When I look online most veteran programmers say its easy to pick up but when I tried it seem kind of tough. I read an articule about it here
http://eclipseandriod.blogspot.com/
The author seem to think it was tough but easy at same time which left me confused. What do you think?
I had very few problems getting set up to develop using Eclipse for Android Development.
Perhaps if you can give some details of the problems you are experiencing we could provide some guidance.

Same idea here. Just give some examples where you feel stuck and maybe we could help.
I think it really depends on your programming background. If you dont know Java, no IDE in the world is going to be easy to learn, however, if you do know Java and can understand how android layout are defined, then Eclipse is easy and straightforward!
Basically I dont know Java programming and Iam used to using visual tools like level editors where you can just code on the object after you place it on the screen. Are there any level editor type tools for eclipse?
The reason why Android uses Java is because the original goals of android was to make a fast spreading, open source smartphone OS that seats Google as the default search engine. Java had/has the largest community of developers. Because Android uses Java, applications can reuse lots of already written Java code saving programmers tons of time that it would've taken to rewrite in whatever other language they would have chosen.
As for a beginner trying to make an Android app -- there's no way to get around the coding. It could be much, much harder. Java's really popular and well documented language with lots of books on it. Learning it would be easier than lots of other languages they could've used.
I have this query regarding android app development.
I'm planning an app, which is going to be very basic accounting app with just plus minus calculations.
I've already developed it in excel & its working well.
Don't want to convert it with 'excel to app' applications which are available online..
May i know what all kind of language skills do i need to execute my first android app from scratch.
And where should i begin.
Thanks & Regards
I would suggest that you learn Kotlin. Its not that difficult. You will get a hang of it quickly.
Here are a couple of links to help you get started. (oops. I am not allowed to post links) But you can search in the site try(dot)kotlinlang(dot)org
Also look out for the "Kotlin for Android Google I/O Intro" it is there on youtube.
Good Luck! :good::good::good:

Thanks for educating me bro. Seems to be very positive & helpful start.
Other than writing some basic excel formulas I don't have any language skills.
Is it advisable to learn 'Kotlin' straightaway without learning JAVA.
Will i be able to create commercial app with this.
Sorry for delayed response.
yes. it is better to jump into kotlin. dont go through java.

I have only one point in addition to what has been already mentioned.
Write the spec well.
1. What screens/inputs will be there
2. What are the functions support
Also write the test cases before you write a single line of code.
How will you test whether your app works? What inputs will you give?
What if you wanted break your app by testing? HOw will you try to break it?
Write everything down. This will help you a lot.

Hi,
To develop android calculator you need to follow the flow chart. First you have to design layouts for application and after that you need to ready the back end. Once the backend is ready, move on android side (front end).
Just simple technologies are required with plus, minus, multiple and divide functions to develop such app. Regarding technical language there are many options, but i would suggest to go for the Java.
Thanks
