Hi,
I don't know if I can ask you about that in this forum :
What are for you the pro and cons about the firewalls AFWall+ and LightningWall ?
Personnaly, I use AFWall+ which seems from my point of view very simple to configure and without impacts on Android configuration. But it could be because I don't have installed AFWall+ ...
I would like to know your opinion.
Thanks.

So you say you use AFwall in one sentence and then you say its not installed. So which is it?
I use it and I have nothing bad to say about it. Its lightweight and no problems at all. I use whitelist though. Not blacklist.
@KernelCorn
Sorry for confusion.
I use LightningWall.

Scroll down to question #37
https://github.com/ukanth/afwall/wiki/FAQ
AFWall+ is a FLOSS software (good) while LW is closed-source.
We discuss about LW in the AFWall+'s thread. Check it out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=67252997&postcount=3079
AFAIK CHEF-KOCH is the main contributor to AFWall's Github Wiki.
Thanks all.
I have the feeling of being small after reading some recommanded points.
It's impressive.
I have understood that LightningWall is not open source, and this point could be problematic for a security app.
Sorry for this question :
Could AFWall+ brick my smartphone if I am not an Android expert ?
I'm no Android expert. I rooted my old Sprint S3 a few months ago out of curiosity and AFwall was one if the first things I downloaded. Worst thing I see happening is you block access to something that needs permission. Worst case disable AFwall n settings temporarily until you figure out what box to check/allow. Read and reread the FAQ and setup procedures and you'll be fine. I love it and have had zero issues.
Read the forums here whenever you can and you'll slowly become more and more comfortable messing around with your phone. XDA has become my latest addiction!

Nope but do not forget to backup before testing stuff.
However it takes time to learn how to properly use such a software. I still have a lot of things to learn on Github but I know how to use for basic options (which user/system apps to block, easy custom script...).
If you have root, I do recommend you AFWall+ but you may also want to have a look at NetGuard.
@Primokorn
Thanks for your support
And promise to see light at end of tunnel ?
You wrote that you know how to use for basic options.
Can I find those options in AFWall+ Github ?

You can find recommandations, nothing more. Each user has a different setup so you'll obviously have to dig.
I also suggest you to subscribe to the AFWall+ XDA thread.

Sorry, but I'm not sure if what you named "AFWall+ XDA thread" matches that :

Hi,
I discovered this article today :
"Similar Android Firewall solutions"
https://github.com/ukanth/afwall/wiki/Similar-Firewall-solutions
Thanks to the author.
It provided particulary for me an explanation about Xposed associated with LightningWall.
"XPosed hacks to intercept directly on the OS layer (e.g. LightningWall). This doesn't need any iptables or additional scripts since the xposed framework provides the hacking ability's."
Hi,
I'm curious to have your point of view about this German article :
https://www.kuketz-blog.de/android-firewall-ohne-root-•-noroot-firewall/
For me with Tapatalk, I realised that there is a problem to display this url; there is a special character in it :
A lot of people around me don't want to root their smartphone, or they don't even know what is "to root" a smartphone; it's too technical for them.
But they want to be able to decide if they authorize or not some apps to go on the Net.
A lot of them heard about "NoRoot Firewall" and wanted to use it. Do I have to discourage them ?

Google Translate doesn't work due to this special character so I have no idea what this article is explaining.
I would suggest NetGuard, no root firewall and adblocker.

I know it's a little complicated.
BTW in your opinion, is "NoRoot Firewall" a good advice for people who have unrooted smartphones ?
How can we be assured that the used VPN, is not problematic from the privacy point of view ?
Hi,
Others informations I found entitled :
"Any security difference between root based firewall (AFWall+) and non-root based ones (NetGuard)?"
http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...root-based-firewall-afwall-and-non-root-based
And also this one about NetGuard :
https://github.com/M66B/NetGuard/blob/master/README.md#permissions
"NetGuard - no-root firewall" by Marcel Bokhorst gives access to its source code, while "NoRoot Firewall" by Grey Shirts does not, if I am right.

Of course a root firewall has a better control over the apps but a NoRoot Firewall is better than nothing
A firewall isn't really related to your privacy. I'd suggest you to have a look at XPrivacy (same dev as NetGuard - Xposed/root required). Link in my sign.
I already use XPrivacy.
It's great from the privacy point of view, though difficult at first.
But for people with no-rooted smartphones, Xprivacy can't be used.
They only have to be confident about VPN used by firewalls for no-rooted smartphones. Logically in this case, "NetGuard - no-root firewall" might be the best choice, because the code is reviewed by anyone in the community, in comparison to other with closed code.
Hi,
Can anyone tell me if it exists a tool to monitor non-root based firewalls ?
Is it possible to determine what data are exchanged through Android's VPN facilities used by non-root based firewalls ?
Is it possible with tools like "Network Log", LightningWall or AFW+ ?
I don't know if my question makes sense.

Hi.
Does anyone knows which are the advertising companies that provide ads for Windows / Linux applications ?
I'm sure that there must be many because there are freeware programs that show ads. Others offer 3rd party software to be installed, so they must be making some money to do it.
I googled for it but I failed to find an answer.
Thank you all.

Oh, I'm so sorry.

To be honest It is almost not worth the trouble. Most people only see the ads while installing and you have to give them the option to not install any add ons. Mix in that most virus detectors will prevent any program that installs anything else as this is considered a virus.
There is one named DesktopAd
Since your Windows app is free, I guess you have many users on it. Then you can add in-app advertising to get revenue. There are many advertising platforms which provide this kind of service. You can find the most suitable one. For Windows desktop apps, I recommend DesktopAd's ads. You just need to add their ad SDK and don't need to do many thing, you will get paid through ad clicks every month.
Desktopad.com is a good choice.
Free desktop apps are more popular. So you get relatively advantages which help you get more income by in-app ads. As you know, almost all the apps have ads in it, you can select one ad payment method. As I know, CPC is good one. Many app users will click the ads unintentionally or he has interest in the ads. But it will have a result, you can get income by every ad click. So I would like to suggest you try to search desktopad.com.
Hey everyone, Old post.

Hi all,
My name is Fabian, and I have a strong background in C. (Done a CS course in C).
I want to do an Android app for my final project(nothing too fancy or complicated but I have to at least have some interface ) and I'm a little stuck with how to proceed from here.
I watched the Java essential course on Lynda and I did understand a little the difference between C in Java, however I don't know how to proceed from here to actual Android development.
If anyone can recommend me finding a crash course, a book or any other resource that could get me up and running as soon as possible, I would really appreciate it.
I don't mind spending money on it.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Thanks for your help I learned a lot and I'm already planning my app
I just have one question that could really help.
I want to make an app where people on different devices can interact and send each other tasks. I guess I need a kind of SQL server that supports Android, right? Is there a better or at least more economic way to do it if I will have around 1000 users where each one can add people to send tasks to?
Many thanks,
Fabian
And one more question
Is there any way to do a phone number authentication (like Whatsapp) instead of user name and password which I think is a little to tedious for my planned app ?
Thanks in advance
Hola, for the task sending. Would you like to make all task public? Or should you send it like a message?
But when i need access to a server, i use php scripts. But we can take that later, when you have answered my last question
For the phone number authentication, you have to have a online database, with all phone numbers. User inserts their phone number, the first time they starts the app. Then you can retrieve it from the database. But we can also take that later.
I´m glad if i helped.
(Sorry for my bad english.. )
Hola
Well I want it to be like a manager that gives a task to his employee. I want the task to be between them and only they can close it.
Likewise, it would be a problem if I make a simple phone number insertion if there's no validation. I was thinking about a number verification (like whatsapp) to prevent other people from accessing the tasks.
Do you think it's possible or should I go with username and password?
Thanks

I am using OpenShift - https://www.openshift.com/developers - which is a open source cloud architecture in that they offer packages like NodeJS and DB's. They allow you to have 'gears' which I guess is their name for services running on their cloud. The free account has 3 gears.
I currently only have a NodeJS server running to deliver files however (as far as I understand it) you can have MySQL and others as a backend. I would think that whatever devices you develop on would simply log into the DB and look up messages/tasks etc. I would also think that your app could insert those things. The best part is it is free until you reach Enterprise level or so. I would check it out since free is good. Offhand, I do not know what DB's Android supports via java but MySQL is probably one of them.
Just some info for you to examine.
Good luck
Hola, of course its possible! But maybe Username and Password is easiest.
You can use e-mail validation.
I actually worked on a application, there store products in databases. So i have tried it before. Ask if you are confused
And Sum1nil, sqlite is implemented in android, so for local database, use sqlite.
But for online database access, i use php
Hello XDA,
I'm releasing a modified version of Kik to the public. This is version 7.9 - without video playback support. I created this in January after discovering an exploit within Kik Messenger that allowed me to crash other users. This gave birth to what are known as "lag codes", which are long strings that cause instability within Kik.
If you're on kik and people post strings like:
0la.3p.snai7.eo.490.0la.3p.snai7.eo.490.0la.3p.snai7.eo.490.0la.3p.snai7.eo.490.(etc)(shout out to TL1 for his work in this area)
you will lag, ios and android are affected by this.
I have modified the parser within Kik to stop those short lag codes from causing lag.
I issued these Pikik clients to only a handful of individuals (hardcoded their usernames and disabled editing) , typically being used to crash pedophile chatrooms. Someone in this handful decided to leak the file. They attached AndroRat and distributed it under my credibility and name and I don't appreciate that.
The exploit (along with other exploits I've discovered) and suggested fixes have been emailed to Kik without reply.
This is version 7.9 without video support. You can do the same with 8.0+ as I have done but I don't want to distribute that yet. as I'd like to make a menu via smali to add additional features to Kik. (Confirmed fake camera is possible among other things) Hopefully within that time, Kik will patch the exploits I've emailed them about.
Please be respectful to one another with Pikik, it can cause issues for other users without Pikik if you so choose.
I will create additional links if necessary. Happy Easter.
May 6 update:
Added Kik 8.0apk for video playback. Added another layer of lag protection.

Hey mate, that wasn't the case.
I planned to publish the technical details of the xss exploit within kik.com in July but that also leaked.
I encourage anyone to decompile this apk and look for anything malicious or suspicious if they don't trust it. It isn't my style to do that.
I understand you're just looking out for the community.
Take care mate.
Apologies and Results
Yah sorry to come out as aggressive or as if I was pointing fingers. If you are truly gunther, then you are very much aware of the presence of individuals on kik who post links which intercept IP's and I see a new exploit regarding a phishing link "video" with your name on it etc. I just want individuals to be careful. Because I made seemingly false accusations, I have done the task of running a scan on the app in a virtual machine (genymotion) running a various security scans on it. Only avast gave a security warning, but upon rescan it was gone. I have uploaded four images of four different tests. Please, proceed with caution for this application is as wonderful as you anticipate it to be. To those that have root and xposed, i would advise using I believe xprivacy to block any SMS or call log interaction which this app may present if the proof supplied below does not suffice your paranoia which I seem to be having right now.

Thx for the tests.
I'm aware of the games being played on Kik. That's not likely to go away but their lack of willingness to correct the problems leaves everyone vulnerable. At least this protects a regular user from another regular user being annoying. The xss exploit needs to be patched immediately. The amount of people getting phished is amazing. I regret sharing info about that exploit.
As I mentioned long ago to anyone on Kik who asks the status quo kik hacker question "can you get ips thru kik?" My response has always been the image handler. The way kik handles their images has been exploitable forever but I'm not yet certain to what degree. After reporting the 2 "main" exploits to Kik, I moved onto checking out my suspicions and getting some confirmation/vindication.
The entire handler for images is a wreck. It's possible to create corrupt image headers (see my pastebin) which will crash Android upon receiving said picture. It's possible to create corrupt image headers to get IP addresses via images (confirmed on iOS by Host 4/6/2015). It's possible to create corrupt image headers to crash Android for lack of associated action.
It's possible to send videos as Gallery, Gallery as Camera, Camera as "Gunther", custom icons, and most likely offsite pngs (apache log taps). It is possible to build a card that exploits these same flaws but with more parameters. The card:// handler is probably only "more secure" because less people use it.
The fact that I can send you a picture that crashes your kik is absurd and it was obvious to me this style of attack would be possible from the first glance at it.
I like Kik but it is a dangerous hangout lately.

Me Host and Link have been working together on adding several features for pikik2 and their similar releases.
For now pikik2 will be:
Based on 8.1.x
Probable:
Turn off read receipts (Host)
Turn off typing notification (Host)
AntiLagV2 (Gunther)
Fake-Camera Mod (Gunther)
AntiLagv2 secondary check (Link)
(Theme choices by download if below doesn't work)
Possible:
Turning links on/off
AntiLagv2 override by conditional regex by input
Selectable Theme by input
Selectable Image background (Link/Host)*
*This works now but needs some more tweaking.
If you or someone you know is a smali pro, please PM me.
We are hoping to build these ideas as switches from a panel within kik
Also. If you're interested in building an Xposed Module to do these things, please PM me and I will help point to where the above things are taking place.

I'll ask some people about it.
First, let me/us say thanks for all the support. It helps keep us motivated to get pikik2 how we want it.
Updates:
We have pretty much narrowed down all the future feature locations.
We are still stuck in the same spot however.
We need a little advice or guidance on how to use toggles and inputs.
We can build the toggles, we can associate them in the places they need to be. But, we aren't sure how to do the following:
We need a generic or simple way to write and read toggle values into the database or preferences. We need to be able to pull these into smali. We are getting progress on Smali knowledge and may be able to import the values ourselves but we need to have a better understanding of how to implement this.
We want to create a check box, no problem. How do we add the value of check box (or inputs) into the db or prefs in the simplest way?
Next, how do we then read the value out of these?
We are reading to use <checkboxprefs but that's not working easy for us so far. We have tried literally hundreds of tests at this point.
My last test was duplicating the widget check box and associating it.
We need help. Someone. Give us a run down of the fastest way to what we need, please. As always, credits will be given.
Thanks mates,
gunther210
I will make a thread asking for more direct help when I have enough posts to do so. Anyone out there who has any advice, we will investigate.
Thanks again.

If a factory reset didn't fix it I'd wonder if your phone is even legal? That pretty much has to be the IMEI is banned AFAIK.
Did you buy it from a legit source?

Probably IMEI based. That's what other apps like Snapchat have used for handing out device bans. You can't circumvent it if its IMEI based unless you know how to mask it or spoof it. The app may also look for additional things like the MAC address and IP address in combination.

Yeah, I would imagine it is IMEI based.
Any recommendations on how to spoof it?
Thanks

I doubt XDA would take kindly to people advising how to conceal IMEI.

Hello and good afternoon, @Journyman16
Just for your information: We do not allow discussions of or support for the change or edit of IMEI's. But we accept if the discussion is about the restoration or repair of the original IMEI. And we also allow spoofing or masking of IMEI as long as it's done on sofware level and the actual, original IMEI isn't tampered with. Spoofing of IMEI's is mainly used out of privacy concerns; however, if such talks deviate to illegal purposes we'd highly appreciate a report.

Thanks for clarifying Oswald. I didn't know how it might be seen by XDA. TBH I didn't really know what a 'device ban' is having only heard of IMEI's being banned after the phone being stolen.

There used to be some ways to do that (with root) on older android versions, but i've never needed to try anything like this personally.
I believe there are xposed modules purpose built for obfuscating IMEI, MAC address and IP address, to disallow apps from identifying devices, like xprivacy, but again, I don't think these work on newer versions of Android.
You can try, but going by my current knowledge (on newer android versions), the only recourse you have is to get a new device (and preferably use a different account) to log into the app in question if it really matters to you.

There are many apps that use "device ban" in addition to "account ban". They usually create a device ID in their database which is based on IMEI, MAC address and IP addresses, and can deny access to their services based on one or more of these identifiers.
Game companies do this all the time, and social media companies like SnapChat and TikTok also employ similar banning techniques. And over the years, it's getting damn near impossible to circumvent these bans. Upto Android 6, you could just provide fake device identifiers to the app with xposed modules and mess around with them but with all the exploits being patched, it is no longer that easy on a software level now.
Thanks for the response
We have tried xprivacy and haven’t had much luck. I’m trying to figure out what the next step is

There are many knowledgeable people on this forum, but with how large this site is, we can't all see everything. Comments like yours don't help, and I'd like to point you to Rule 10:
10. Help others if you can.
If you see posts from others where you can help out, please do so. This place exists because people are helping each other, and even if you are relatively new to the matter, there's probably quite a few people with less experience than you, who could benefit from what you've learned. Don't be shy.

If you have nothing constructive and helpful to say, it is probably better to say nothing.
@Laser422 What do you mean by "device ban"? Are you saying that the Play Store won't let you install the app? Can you provide screenshots? What make and model is your phone, and what OS version are you running? Is your bootloader unlocked and are you rooted?
Do this:
Go to Play Store. Tap profile icon upper right. Tap Settings.
Expand About section. Do you see "Play Protect certification - Device is certified"?

It's most likely an account ban. Tinder probably thought he was catfishing. Or somebody reported him.

That wouldn't prevent him from installing the app. He just wouldn't be able to log in.
Or using a company phone with policy in place only allowing some apps

I think this should be possible by "Tasker"; however, it's a paid application, and therefore I don't provide a link to it here. Personally, I don't use it as I've no requirement for it. Many, many years ago, I used Llama and believe to remember it had probably similar features.
Regarding Tasker, here's the forum with tips & tricks:
