Z5 not booting - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All
My E6653 is no longer booting after freezing while running a custom rom. When I boot, it shows the Sony logo, then the light flashes red. It does not let me enter TWRP.
I have tried flashing original firmware using flashtool, repairing using xperia companion and the same issue happens.
I have tried flashing different custom kernels and TWRP versions. The only version of TWRP that works is TWRP 2.8.7.0 by AndroPlus but I cannot access the device through usb and adb does not work.
If anyone has any ideas on how to fix I would be super grateful.

What have u done to make ur device freeze, and which kernel were u using before freezing?

Thanks for getting back to me. The phone froze while using the Plex app, and after I force rebooted, the boot issue happened.
I was running V2.3.3 of Xperia X ROM by _LLJY and the kernel that came with that custom rom.

Well the Rom's kernel which u were using does not include TWRP, just try one of these solutions :
1/ flash ur original kernel, or reflash ur official firmware using flash tool and DON'T EXCLUDE any thing and wipe user data / apps log... ETC simply do a clean install with out any exclusion
2/ If u have ur original kernel patched with TWRP img inside, directly flash it using flashtool and enter TWRP.

- I tried this with 2 different official firmwares and no luck. I made sure I didn't exclude anything. It still gets stuck on the Sony logo
2/ If u have ur original kernel patched with TWRP img inside, directly flash it using flashtool and enter TWRP.
- not 100% sure what to do with this. I don't have the original kernel patched with TWRP img inside. Is this something you have?

Try this: Install Androplus kernel and Twrp Recovery which comes with him.
Find flashable prerooted firmware for your model than connect phone to pc to transfer it when you are in Twrp and than wipe cache, dalvik and data and try to flash prerooted zip.

Still no luck. When the phone turns on, the light goes yellow, I hit:
VOL down - screen goes blank
VOL up - brightness increase of screen then goes off and the light flashes red

Tried this also. kernel and recovery seem to install fine. But when I press VOL up or down, it does not go into twrp.

I managed to get into TWRP using the version from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/development/twrp-3-0-2-cm-aosp-roms-t3373008 with AndroPlus kernel. But, cannot access the phones storage through computer. TWRP shows failed to mount /usb-otg (invalid argument).

ok listen...can you flash stock.ftf rom to your tipo? just download flashtool (google it) and find stock.ftf from general section...one other way is to flash vergeance kernel with flashtool, enter cwm and flash a rom from android development (or cm10 from original android development) if you dont understand something tell me....
P.S. after you flashed stock rom or vergeance kernel turn on your phone and put charger to see if it charging

it seems that you have wrong header.sin or you didn't enter the flashmode properly. make sure you get notice 'the device is plugged with flashmode' or something like that when you plug in the usb to your pc. to fix the header.sin issue you'll need the correct one. you can find it on the same thread where you got your tft.

i think that ico98 dont know how to fix header.sin and its better to flash a kernel from fastboot...its more easy...do you agree?

I'm not sure about that. he didn't give any specific info about how messed up his system is. if he install any stock ICS based rom (without any custom kernel) his problem mostly could be fixed by reflashing the rom and wipe the data. flashing a kernel won't fix this issue. aside from that scenario, there are several more scenario i.e:
1 he could have install a JB based rom then he install a ICS rom, completely dead. need to flash complete tft or reflash JB rom and wipe data.
2 ICS rom with custom ICS kernel. can be fixed by flash a stock kernel
3 etc etc...there are a lot of scenario
my main point is that flashing a kernel doesn't always fix anything. in most cases, I only suggest that step for more advanced user. without enough data about the system condition flashing a complete tft will be a general and always working method.
anyway, before we do any 'flash' thing, IMO wipe data might be a good choice. most new member forget about that important step and ended up with a bricked device.
ok then...i said to flash kernel and to choose a custom rom (gimlo, paradox etc) but if ico98 download again ftf file will he have this problem again? (header.sin)
P.S. sometimes i forgot to wipe system and data when i am to cm10 and i want to go back to ics and the only problem i have is some apps to force close....no brick only fc
P.S.2 i installed kernels from xperia mini pro and insecure kernel E dual and my phone didnt brick, just not boot...maybe my phone has immunity at brick ahahahahahahaha

well...it doesn't means that your system is immune. you're just lucky enough to never experienced a hardbrick.

Bootloop after unlocking bootloader

Guys, I soft-bricked my friend's Xperia L while unlocking the bootloader (used Sony's method, with ADB and Fastboot), but then, after unlocking and rebooting, we're struck at the bootanimation. How can I make it alive again?
Sent from my GT-P3110 using xda app-developers app
Thats perfectly normal.
Just flash a .ftf trought Flashtool and you are good to go
Here is the link to all versions of FTF curently available
Did it, but now Wi-Fi isn't working correctly and PC Companion doesn't detect the device anymore. What should I do?

OK, witch version of firmware did you flash? I had problems with wifi on 15.3.0.26. The newest firmware did fix that problem.
Did you flash some custom kernel? If you have you must enter recovery and flash modules for that kernel.
If nothing of this is a problem try to reflash firmware.
So enter flashtool choose flashmode put check marks on wipe CACHE and DATA, also check No final verification.

Yep, I flashed the 15.3.0.26 firmware, so that was the problem. I flashed the latest firmware and everything works great now! I also flashed a custom kernel for my friend, and now he's really happy!
I had the same problem with my phone some days back
Flashing with Stock Rom helped. But flash with the latest Stock rom
I suggest you flashing 15.3.A.1.14 ftf and keep WIPE DATA and CACHE ticked..
If you are searching the "why" of the bootloop I think that I have you because whose answer is the following: If you try to charge the mobile and it has become part of those soft-bricked devices, I think that this is because you don't have enough charge to boot properly, so, what you have to do is to connect your device in flash mode, waiting for the flashmode more than usually, and then restart you firmware with the properly .ftf that you want.
Luck!

Rooting M with chainfires kernel?? Recovery not available??

Does anyone else find that rebooting to recovery using twrp doesn't happen? I've tried re flashing recovery with fastboot and even selecting in bootloader boot to recovery after and still just boots into android.. Any ideas? Is it chainfires boot.img causing the problem?

How you install custom kernel without TWRP?
My device is stock and i want to install elementalx + supersu to root. But i need TWRP first.
Fastboot the img file of twrp then boot into recovery from the bootloader

Got the same problem - I flash the TWRP image with fastboot successfully but when I try to enter recovery, it either reboots or shows me the stock recovery. I'm on stog Android 6, trying to flash a different rom and kernel...
we are on the same boat @granets . when i boot to custom recovery it just boots directly to homescreen.
Have you tried the other kernel i linked above?

Left the boat earlier by downloading TWRP again (for a third time!!!) and it worked fine. Guess when downloading from their site, there is a high percent chance you will get a corrupted file. So far around 50% of all images I download don't work, and every time the problem is different. Maybe try that

So about 75% of the time when I switch roms I lose my recovery and have to use flashtool to restore kk and root / recovery. Anyone else have that issue?

Because recovery is installed to system partition on LB so when you change roms you wipe the system and hence lose recovery.

K Tha makes sense.
On an addition, the reason I need to flashtool so much is because the phone hangs on the Sony boot screen also 75% of the time. Md5 sums match up before flashing also.
Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk
I'll elaborate:
Coming from rsxw z5 experience rom, flashing existenz rom. Flashes fine, everything passes, but on reboot it just hangs at kernel boot screen. This has happened multiple times unfortunately, on multiple roms. I'm wondering if there's an issue with the updater script detecting lb or ub? Dunno. I'll check the scripts tonight, but I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue or has worked around it if so.
Cheers
Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk
Since both of those ROMs are for locked bootloader it will not have anything to do with the updater script looking for UB or LB.
However, if those ROMs are based on stock ROMs that have a different kernel, unless you swap kernels that will result in a boot loop.
Check to see the base version of both those ROMs and ensure you flash the appropriate kernel for the ROMs when swapping between them. Flashing stock kernels can be done via fastboot on locked bootloaders, you only need an unlocked bootloader to flash unsigned kernels.

That link doesn't have anything to do with flashing custom ROMs via fastboot.
That link discusses installing TWRP and then using TWRP to install the ROM.
Let me clarify my previous response. Custom ROM .zip files can't be flashed via fastboot but you can the system.img from the ROM zip and then use fastboot to flash the system.img.

Alright, but my main question is how can I install TWRP on a Sony Xperia M C1905? I've searched the guy's post that says that I can't flash it via fastboot or flashtool but I don't get it how will I get TWRP to run using the FOTAkernel method without any pre-installed recovery.
I've not tested it with the official TWRP app yet but I have tried it with rashr with no success.
Oh, and if I use fastboot to flash "system.img" from a ROM, will the device run with the new firmware or do I need to do extra things besides that?
(I have an unlocked bootloader, android version 4.3 and rooted firmware.)

If the device is already rooted, you should be able to flash a copy of TWRP for your device via the Flashify app.
Things weren't that complicated in the days of 4.3, you shouldn't have any special conditions to worry with.

I've tested flashify and when I pressed on flash TWRP, it did nothing.
I tried to select the file manually and it told me that I'm not able to flash recoveries because it could not find the recovery partition.
One more question: that guy said that I'm not able to flash TWRP using the stock ROM.
How is it going to work?

I tried doing it within the app but it said that an error occurred.
Is it because I've installed on internal storage?
I've also tried it with rashr and it said that it completed but the phone rebooted back to normal.
Also, should I flash TWRP to the BOOT partition?
EDIT
Thank you for helping me! I flashed TWRP on the boot partition and it worked!
I didn't care about the firmware because I was going to flash a new one anyway.
