How can I unroot my device safely? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to bring my phone back to normal mode. Buy normal mode I mean I want to basically bring my phone back to the beginning/stock. I want to receive OTA's, every latest updates. I don't want root anymore, none of that, I want my phone back to normal/stock.
So how could I do this without messing anything up? - My Nexus 5 device is only rooted, it is not running on any ROM, it has TWRP Recovery, and that's about it.. I'm bored and tired of root and want to go back to normal.

Does the root app have a full uninstall/unroot option?

What root app? SuperUser?

Just flash factory rom in fastboot.

But then I wouldn't receive any OTA updates (would I?).. And last time I did that, my phone was complete useless. I couldn't call or receive calls, ANYTHING. I had to basically get a new phone.

Obviously you will get all ota updates as long as you are completely stock without root.. and what does that mean by 'complete usless'? You need to flash properly.

You could use Wugfreshs Nexus Root Toolkit on your PC. It gas options to flash a tock ROM, stock recovery and relock the bootloader so it's completely stock.

F2 to HE update?

I bought my S3 used and it was already unlocked but from what I can tell still had the stock ROM (base version says it is I535VRLF2 but DEVICE STATUS says it is modified). When it powers up, I do not get a CWM or TWMP screen -- it goes directly to the normal startup so I am not sure what the previous owner loaded/did. I do not see any folders in the root folder (using ES FIle Explorer) for CWM and nothing in DATA/BACKUP (EDIT: just saw build number is VRALG7)...
Today I got a notice about an OTA upgrade (to HE) and got help on how to freeze it (as I did not want to lose root and all the customization I did to some files) but now I am wondering what changes were made from F2 to HE. I did find a post that talks about the HE upgrade.
Was F2 the previous OTA for the S3, or did my phone miss other OTAs? And if so, I am missing out on some important changes where I should let the OTA happen and then go and unlock the phone again? I read a number of threads about 'the new radio' which I assume is software to improve the phone or WIFI. Am I missing out?
Thanks
Frank

I don't think you are missing out on anything to be honest. I did update mine and reroot without any issues, but can't really tell a difference. I would still do it so I can have the latest update on my phone since this one doesn't lock anything that we can't get back into.

There has been only three official releases, F2,G7,and HE. Since you are at G7 I would go ahead and OTA HE. Latest ROMS are based off of it plus you will have all the latest firmware and modem.

Thanks for the reply. Will that break either my root or unlock (actually, I am not sure what state this phone is at since I did not do it -- I do find SuperSU in APPS, and have granted SuperUser to programs like Titanium Pro but there is nothing for CWM or other ROM managers...)?
Frank
If you did an OTA to get to G7 your root is probably gone. You said you have Titanium installed, try to use it. If not rooted it won't work and will advise you so. If this is the case do the OTA to HE and then you will be up to date stock ROM wise.

No, sorry, I must not have explained it correctly. Titanium Pro, ES File Explorer, etc works fine, and I can edit/delete/freeze, etc no problem. So it is still rooted (or unlocked, I can figure out which is which). I would update to HE but only if it did not mess up what I have....
Thanks

Ok I understand now. Root and unlocked are two different things. You can flash an HE ROM and not lose your root. Unlock in your case I think you are referring to the bootloader. It will have to be unlocked prior to flashing custom ROMS. Get an app called EZ Unlock from the Playstore and it will unlock bootloader for you if it's not unlocked already.
I recommend CleanROM 3.1 if you decide to flash. Hope this has helped you some.
I'm trying to revert back to custom because i lost my IMEI but the process I was following required me to flash "VRALF bootchain" 2x and then flash "HE package" but i dont know where to get the HE package and i tried flashing root66 and VRALHD but they both failed can someone help me?

The only way to get stock HE currently is OTA.

I am not interested in loading any custom ROMs (although I am hoping we get the official JB soon). The only thing that is of interest to me is to be able to run certain programs that require superuser access (e.g. Titanium Pro) and to be able to edit and delete files in the root directory. So I assume all I need is root, and I don't want any OTA updates to take that away (or overwrite files that I have modified or edited that deal with the OS). Maybe that is why I cannot find any reference to CWM -- the previous owner only rooted it but did not unlock it....

Got just the thing for you. First test to make sure you have newest CWM. Power down, Hold volume up,home button, and lock button at same time until phone flashes twice then release. This will put you in recovery and you can see what version you have. The latest is 6.0.1.2. If not you can find newest version or a touch version right here at XDA. Then if you want just a rooted HE version here you go.

Or you can download GooManager and flash TWRP for a more user friendly touch recovery.
And flash the same rom from Scott.

OK. I have 6.0.0.8 right now. I am surprised it was there, as with my Nexus and my TP on a cold boot it would show CWM at startup. And there would be folders in the root directory (/CWM). But yes, I have CMW.
And OK on now being able to download and install a rooted HE. But most are saying it either does nothing or makes the phone run a little hotter, so unless I see a pressing need, I will just stay with what I have.
Thanks again.

I had tried TWRP with my HP TP and although it has a nice interface, one time, on loading a new nightly, it TOTALLY messed up my TP. I thought it was bricked. I ended up having to do a complete restore back to WebOS using WebDoctor and a lot of what I thought was code-level input via the PC trying to bring it back to life. Since then, I have only used CWM.
Thanks for the input though!

It is personal choice. I have not had any problems with it and have been running since device was released for pre-order. I run whatever recovery seems to be most stable for the device. CWM for Tbolt. Amon Ra for Rezound. And now TWRP for S3. Have seen more bricks and failed flashes contributed to CWM so I stick with TWRP.

The OTA installed with a custom recovery installed? Interesting. Usually OTA's fail if anything but stock recovery is installed. I only lost root but restored root with OTA Rootkeeper with stock recovery. Good to know that custom recovery can be installed and still get OTAs!

Rooted, but never flashed. Best way to unroot to take the updates?

Hi there, quick question. Searched like crazy, but I think the keywords were just too generic to get any useful results.
Status:
Verizon Galaxy S3
Running 4.1.2 Touchwiz via Verizon
Rooted with some apps frozen & some greenified
Never flashed anything, there are no triangles.
The unlocked icon & "custom" appears at boot.
Issues: None, except my micro USB port doesn't work anymore, so I'm a battery swapper day to day.
I'm on the last few months on my phone, but decided I'd like to take the kitkat update. The quickest & easiest way to do this seems to be to install Universal Unroot from the play store - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.universal.unroot
Run it. Then take the updates once I'm no longer rooted.
Before I did this, wanted to get your feedback on this as a process and if anyone has experience with a similar set up??
Thanks!!

Make sure you revert back to factory as much as you can remembered, like build.props, unfreeze all system apps, unroot with Universal unroot, then take the update. But first make a backup of all your apps/settings with Tibu. Worst come to worst it just failed without any harm done and if it failed and you couldn't figure out what's wrong then the fastest way and most reliable way is to Odin stock ML1, then use the OTA to upgrade to 4.4kk then root with Towelroot app, then restore all your apps with Tibu.

Thanks! That's what I'm thinking. Thinking unfreeze, ungreenify, then unroot. Do a nice reboot for good measure then take the update.
If it fails and I'm still on 4.1.2, just re-root, grab mobile odin, and **** it, let's flash!
I rooted recently using towelroot and uninstalled a bunch of bloat. What would I need to do in order to take the upgrade?

yeah, I may do that. I'm down to the last few months which is why I was like "screw it, let's go vzw". With that in mind, I do need to think about clearing off my personal data, so I may do a factory reset soon because why not and see what happens.
You don't want my phone. While it is in really good condition, the lack of usable micro usb (it flat out doesn't work) gets old.

had a problem w/ a refurb they gave me where the usb port was screwy. i had to firmly hold the cable in at a weird angle and luckly got through a 9min ODIN flash after 4 tries. you could probably chat w/ tech and see if they'll still send you another. i've been outta warranty for awhile but they were really cool, gave me another (although it was a locked 4.3).

Giving it one more go, found this little bit of advise on a verizon support board when someone was getting a 402 failure on a Note 2:
https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/813932
Please wipe your cache partition, then try again. This will not erase data.
• Turn off the device.
• Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time:
• Volume Up key
• Home key
• Power key
• When 'GALAXY Note II' appears on the screen, let go of the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
• When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
• Press the Volume Down key to highlight 'wipe cache partition.'
• Press the Power key to select and wipe the cache.
• With 'reboot system now' highlighted, press the Power key to restart the device.

TWRP & Flashify work with this?
Sorry for my noobie question, but I rooted back in April with WeakSauce & TWRP and also installed Flashify. I am fuzzy on what I did and now, I am afraid of bricking my phone through ignorance.
Can I use these files to upgrade to 4.4.3 on my Verizon HTC One M8? If so, what is the most straightforward way to do this? Can I use Flashify or TWRP to load the OP6ZBIMG.ZIP file?
Thanks
I was able to get back to stock by following this guide I found here: http://www.bane-tech.com/how-to-return-htc-one-m8-verizon-to-stock-s-on-relock-bootloader-unrootuninstall-supersu/
Everything worked great until the final step of removing SuperSU. I was unable to remove SuperSU using all methods I could find. It remains as a system app, but I am no longer rooted.
My intentions were to return it to stock for the warranty screen replacement by HTC, so I took the risk and hid SuperSU in the app drawer and sent it in for the warranty work. It came back fixed and factory reset, but SuperSU was still there. I still wanted to return my phone to a complete stock experience in case I need to return it to Verizon, so I took a risk of taking the OTA released in September, thinking it would wipe SuperSU out of the system apps. Somehow, the OTA left SuperSU in tact. I also noticed that the stock camera app was limited to only camera or selfie mode. Video, Zoe and the others weren't able to be accessed. Has anyone else experienced these issues, or have any recommendations for fixing them? I am considering taking the HTC Eye OTA due soon from Verizon, hoping that will fix my problems, but I'm not too confident since the last OTA didn't work as expected.

That's because that is a crap guide. You turned s on before removing su which turned on /system write protection and basically write protected your su app.
You must remove su after locking bootloader and making sure all is well with lock and tamper status. You should only turn s on AFTER this is all verified.

I have uninstalled TWRP, Busy Box & SU. When I run the Check Root program it says I have ROOT.
I have twice accepted to OTA, it reboots, goes about 1/3rd through and goes to the red triangle thing which I then go into the recovery console.
On the bottom it says:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update...
Verifying current system...
"/system/customize/ACC/default.xml" has unexpected contents.
Write host_mode:0 done
At this point I reboot and I am back to where I was. Any pointers?

Su doesn't matter. You are going to need it to fix your problem. Did you make changes (like hotspot hack) to the default.xml file?
Actually. An easy way to fix it is to either flash a totally stock Rom or flash the official ruu i I have posted in the non dev section. It doesn't wipe and would put you back to 100% stock and let you take the ota

Just wanted to thank you. I ended up doing the hboot image, then the other one took just fine. I am now on 4.4.3 without root which is fine by me as the only reason I wanted root was for Wi-Fi which now works with foxfi.

I'm on complete stock (not even rooted) and I've been having this problem for a while. I found out that sometimes when it happens, I can fix it by restarting my phone, but it goes back to being broken soon after. I noticed that it started to happen after I installed the Google now launcher, leading me to believe that it's a ram problem (and hence restarting will help) so I uninstalled a bunch of useless apps and now I use about 1g ram at idle, and the problem still persists.
This morning, I updated with the new OTA (4.4.4 and HTC Eye) and the problem is still here. If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated.

You are s on too right? If so I don't have an option for you yet. Your system files are write protected which means the most you can do is clear data for the app or factory reset. Are you using an SD card and if so does it make a difference which storage location you use?

[Q] Considering rooting the Nexus 5

So I have a black Nexus 5 with a capacity of 16GB. The device is only about 4 months old, so I still have it covered with warranty until June 2016. The device is as good as new and I'm very happy with it because everything is so fast and smooth.
Recently I've been thinking about rooting the device for maybe some little extras. For example, I have GTA SA installed but I would like to play it with the Cleo mod to have a little bit more fun. Or maybe I'll install some kind of adblocker so I could enjoy my brand new phone without the annoying gold diggers. Or perhaps I want to hide some apps from my app drawer so it would look neat and organised. Or I would like to install an apk that isn't available for non-rooted devices. Or in case I want to see the battery percentage next to the time display or anything like that.
As you can see I would only want to root it for rather small reasons. I definitely don't want to overclock anything because it already meets my criteria for speed, nor do I want to install any custom ROMs because I really like the pure android experience. So I have a few questions because I'm a total noob at the field of tweaking android:
Is my current data going to be wiped if I would want to root it?
I'm aware of the upcoming Android L release, so would I be able to update it right away (remember, I'm not going to use any custom ROMs) or would I have to unroot and reset everything first?
In case something goes wrong and I want to use my warranty, could any traces be found after I would have unrooted the device? (because rooting voids your warranty, right?)
What would be the top reasons to root the Nexus 5? For example, any features the device should've had but unfortunately hasn't.
And is it actually 100% safe...?
So regarding to the last question... A friend of mine has a rooted Moto G, he made me familiar with rooting and it's probably thanks to him that I'm considering it. Everything was going well but there were a few times that he woke up and his phone wasn't worth more than a brick. Apparently, it was because of some ROM he installed. This probably won't affect me in any way because like I said, I'm not going to install any custom ROMs, but my friend expected everything to be normal while it wasn't. He probably did everything like it should be done but then he suddenly woke up with a brick next to his head. So apparently, even if you do everything exactly like they tell you to do it, there's still a slight chance that it's going to end up badly, right?
So basically, I'm considering rooting my device but I'm still not sure what I would have to do because there are lots of tutorials and everything is quite confusing and I have some questions. All the help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!
root/unlockbootloader/install twrp&busybox no data loss
root/unlockbootloader/install twrp&busybox no data loss without P.C, okay here we go mod's remove if you think it's not helping. download towelroot by geohot, now the rest from playstore, es file exploer, super su,busybox, reboot app, nexus unlock bootloader,
make sure you have security unknowen sources ticked and verify apps unticked.
download towelroot from chrome with es file exploer open and install hit make it rain tab, next install busybox, next install super su app.unlockbootloader with in the app.,install twrp and auto install recovery for hammerhead from twrp, now you should have full root after reboot.super user and busybox unlocked bootloader and twrp installed, and you know what the reboot app is for . no data loss and without a P.C, or you could use fastboot install just look in Q&A, kind regard's joe hope this help's.

1. Unlocking the bootloader is what wipes the data partition, not root access.
2. Don't bother with OTAs to update, they're too much of a bother to try to get to work, when you can just flash factory images/zip, most likely before you even get the OTA pushed to you.
3. Depends where you bought it from. If you got it off the Play Store, then Google does not care about the software you have on your device as long as it's a legitimate manufacturing fault covered by the warranty. You can RMA to Google with a custom ROM and kernel if you wanted to. If you bought it from elsewhere, You'll have to send it to LG for repair. It's possible to reflash factory images and reset the tamper flag, there isn't anything else on the Nexus 5 that will tell LG anything. The easiest way is using LG Flashtool, which can be found in the first link of my signature. If your device is completely dead however, it doesn't matter since LG wouldn't be able to boot it up.
4. Root access is simply root access. You get access to /system, and therefore can use root apps and other modifications.
5. The root process itself is pretty much 100% safe. The Nexus 5 is really, really hard to brick, unless you flash something that isn't meant for your device or something similar, so user error is the only risk in the process. Software-wise, of course root access comes at some form of a security risk. Just be sure of what apps you're granting root access to and you should have no problem.

Most likely user error, or simply because a Moto device could be locked down more (which also makes it riskier and harder to restore) and not as easy to develop for. The Nexus 5 is one of the hardest devices to brick (again, excluding user error), and if you have any issues it would either be user error or a bug in the ROM/kernel.

There are ways to gain root access without unlocking the bootloader and without a PC as mentioned above, but it's recommended to do it the traditional way by backing up your internal storage to a PC first and using fastboot. Those methods are useful for other devices that are more locked down. This is a Nexus device, it's better to do it properly.

If you don't have access to a PC, or you're using a locked-down Samsung/HTC/Moto/Sony/whatever device, then sure, go ahead and use the exploit methods.
But if you do have access to a PC, and it's a Nexus device, just do it properly, it'll cause fewer possible issues.

Yep. :good: I also recommend using TWRP instead of CWM as your recovery. PhilZ Touch is also another good alternative, but it is no longer maintained and probably won't work for Lollipop's default encryption.
Latest SuperSU is located here, flashable in a custom recovery.

Even though you now have root access, I recommend using Bootunlocker or whatever app to unlock the bootloader from within Android (which doesn't wipe), then flashing a custom recovery with fastboot while in the bootloader anyways.
Why?
If something goes wrong and your phone doesn't boot, you'll have no choice but to unlock the bootloader WITH a wipe using fastboot, then flash a custom recovery or reflash factory images, unless you've done the above, in which case you can dirty-flash (no wipe) a stock ROM zip downloadable here.

To be clear, the *whole* phone including your sdcard partition will be wiped so make sure you back up before unlocking your bootloader. I would use an app like ES File Explorer and copy all your files to Dropbox or Google Drive if you dont have a computer but you'll need a computer anyway.

If we want to be clear, we should also be accurate. The *whole* phone is not wiped. The /data partition is wiped, which includes /data/app (where user apps are stored) /data/data (where user settings and app data is stored) and /data/media (where /sdcard data is stored)

All guides and info threads are in my signature. One such INFO thread is OTA help-desk, which explains that you can receive OTA with custom recovery, however there are extra steps.
However, please let me explain 1 thing. OTA is the ultimate noob move. Only root-noobs receive OTA updates. They are the most inconvenient method of updating your OS if you are rooted. Long before you even receive the OTA update, there will be a pre-rooted flashable.zip that can be flashed via recovery.
noobs will often say "but..but..but I wont have to wipe if I accept an OTA"... Little do they know... Even after an official OTA, things screw up. Whenever an OS is upgraded, a wipe is highly recommended as OTA's are imperfect and data between apps and settings conflicts between versions.
OTA is a fools errand if you're rooted. Now you're rooted, leave OTA to the unrooted and learn to manage your rooted device properly. All the info you could ever need is available in my signature as previously mentioned.

Owning a Nexus makes fastboot your best friend, especially if you have issues.
Read up on adb/fastboot and forget OTA's. Nothing like a clean fresh install of a new version. And there's many options to save /backup your data and important files.
Without learning fastboot and adb.... Simple fix issues can become major headaches.
Don't be intimidated. Read, learn, then do. ?

Well, you convinced me to take my N5 to a step further.
So I already Towelrooted my phone which gave me root access and an untouched bootloader and recovery. My next step would be to backup every app and all data to be sure in case something goes wrong, this would be done by using Titanium Backup. Then I should be unlocking the bootloader by simply using BootUnlocker for Nexus Devices so I wouldn't get my data wiped (I know I would be able to restore it with my backup but I rather do it a bit faster and less complex). When I did that, I have to head over to this thread and flash TWRP by following the instructions at "2. Installing a Custom Recovery".
So after all these steps my phone would have no limitations and it would be as unlocked as for example your Nexus 5, right?

Erecovery only work for Chinese firmware.
Use the guide above and yes you can receive ota.
I also received the same message. Getting into recovery was inconsistent for me even with TWRP. Sometimes it would do the auto downloaded and fail thing and other times it would go into TWRP. You need to get where you have three choices and pick erocovery and push the start button. This brings up the restore ability. Worked perfect on the USA model.

Completely positive. It happened by accident because I got in a bad place with HRT rom. Came out completely stock and current when no upgrade need. Then I rooted stock and somehow lost gapps including keyboard. Did it again and back to stock. All in erecovery. No other programs or files. It did a 2.5GB download, flashed in Emui and rebooted like when I bought it.

Sorry for the no noob question: I just got my mate 9 and unlocked bootloader and rooted it. Recovery is TWRP 3.0.2-2.
Where do i find this erecovery? Couldn't see any download option in TWRP and even Google didn't know that term. Could anybody please explain step by step how to revert to stock (for the only sake of getting OTAs) once the phone has unlocked bootloader and is rooted using the method from xda with modified boot.img?
Or is it even possible to take OTAs while being rooted with system read only? On my previous phone, the Asus Zenfone 2 this was possible.
Thanks a lot

Thanks for the quick answer. Let me clearify what I understood : this erecovery is available only on the PC?
So basically I wait in rooted state until I receive the next OTA, don't take it but switch off the phone.
Then connect it to the PC and boot it up by holding the volume up + power key.
Then what happens exactly?

Ah ok, this erecovery is still available on my phone even if I already flashed a custom recovery, right?
Then after downloading the firmware, erecovery will flash it and overwrite root and lock my bootloader again, correct?
