My root is gone but bootloader is still unlocked - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
Yesterday I noticed a issue while using greenify, it says "Failed to put Facebook,Snapchat into hibernation." I've never experienced this before. So I thought that it could be about root and downloaded root checker.
I run it an it says "Root access is not properly installed on this device." But when I restart in recovery mode it says that bootloader is still unlocked.
And also some strange things happen. App permissions change randomly etc.
I tried a hard reset this morning, but everything is same.
I don't know much about this root thing. My device is second hand, and it had root when I got the phone.
Edit: I'm using stock rom 6.0.1 MOB30P, and stock recovery
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Flash TWRP in fastboot and then flash the latest supersu through TWRP. Could be an issue of how the phone was rooted.
If you want to keep stock recovery, just use fastboot boot TWRP.img to use it temporarily.

An unlocked bootloader has nothing to do with root as you can have one or both.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I've read that doing a factory reset on Marshmallow can cause to lose the root, maybe this caused my problem.
Actually I don't wanna mess with these things because I don't have any experience before. I'm just using Greenify which requires root, but I've got it working by switching the "non-root" mode.
Will it cause an issue using the device at this situation as a normal user?
And just another question about these random permission changes. Could MOB30P build cause this issue? I haven't had a trouble about it before the July update.

[Q] Stuck in Bootloader and TWRP

I have an AT&T HTC One X that's rooted. I wanted to put Cyanogenmod 10 on it, but I accidently wiped the System files instead of the cache. Now it can't boot up regularly, I've tried using Rom Update Utility but it doesn't seem to work. Factory Reset doesn't seem to work either. I didn't expect this to happen because my friend just flashed his a couple of days ago. I've tried making a backup and restoring but no matter what I can't get the phone to start up normally. Unless I put it in TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) or the HBoot/Bootloader I really can't use it for anything. Any suggestions? I would greatly appreciate it. Also when bootloader opens it says "Tampered" and under it "Unlocked" because I did root it. It didn't have "Tampered" when I first rooted it.
I don't care about Cyanogenmod 10 anymore I just want to have it working again.
Everything else about the phone is in perfect condition but what I just said is the only problem.
Wiping /system means you wiped the OS. Naturally, it can't boot up with no rom in place. You need to flash something.

Well, I've already flashed it to a few things and so far it hasn't changed anything. Got any links?
Did you fastboot flash boot boot.IMG ? Don't know what hboot you are on, but could be it.

Issues with TWRP 920T Model

Hi,
I have a 920T with 5.0.2 android version and I'm having a hell of a time installing TWRP. I root fine verified root and the whole thing is beautiful. Every root app I try says im rooted, titanium backup works fine and super user does as well. So I know i'm rooted correctly.
Now I download TWRP from the market place and set up a recovery, I pick "twrp 2.8.6.0 zeroflte" and go through the steps. Again no problem, says it is set up correctly would you like to go into recovery mode. I say yes and then I get stuck in a boot loop forever, I can't do anything but go into download mode and redo my stock rom which I don't want. My end wish is to get http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo...ent/rom-xtrestolite-pure-edition-1-0-t3088032 that on my phone as I'd love to bypass selinux which I can't on a stock rom.
I should note I also tried installing TWRP through odin and that boot loopd my phone as well. Am I missing something here? Wrong step? wrong app? wrong something?

S6 suddenly lost root, can't root back

Today AFWall informed me that it couldn't get root access to change firewall settings. That was very strange because I rooted the phone and everything worked fine. I didnot flash or update or anything else with the phone. Supersu says there is no su binary and it can't install it, so there is nothing I can do.
I use cf-Autoroot to root. I just flashed it again, no success. I flashed the stock firmware back G920FXXS3DPDA_G920FDBT3DPC4_G920FXXU3DPCA_HOME.tar and then my cf Autoroot file I gained root a few weeks ago. Again no success. There is no error message or anything like that. Flashing and rooting goes on normaly. However there is no root access after rebooting.
I used Galaxy S, S3 and S4 with root. I've never had that root suddenly went away.
Whats going on here? How can I get back root?
Thanks for help.
@SamsungPisser I have no idea what's going on with your phone but use Odin and install TWRP recovery http://arter97.com/browse/exynos7420/recovery/twrp/g920fi/ (download the tar file) After you have installed recovery download supersu 2.68 https://download.chainfire.eu/924/SuperSU and flash in TWRP.Wipe dalvik cache and reboot. Then you should have root ?

I have SM-G920F (DBT, German), can I use the fi version you provided?
I know I even tried to get TWRP on my phone working. It just said "recovery is not SE enforcing" and stuck there. With CF-Autoroot I could go back to a working recovery.

TWRP works so far. However problem seems to be, that I have encrypted and so /data can't be mounted.
In addition I have no option to decrypt. So I need a possibility to root with encryption enabled.

I don't think it's possible but if I were you I would do a factory reset and then flash supersu in TWRP ?
I did a factory reset, encrypted and then rooted. If I root first, no encryption is possible, it simply doesn't start.
However I don't understand. With encrypted device I can root without problems, so why my root was gone and wasn't possible to get back.
Helium backup disappointed me much. I selected every App. Some apps weren't backuped (like Tinder, Swiftkey, JuiceSSH and some more) and even SMS and Callog are now gone because Helium wasn't able to backup. Never had such problems with Titanium Backup.

HELP!! Messed up the root after updating to Android 10.

I downloaded the Android 10 zip file from Oxygen Updater app. Went to settings app, selected local upgrade and installed the update. Since I already had root, and wanted to still have root, I went over to Magisk app, installed magisk (the way to do after installing an OTA) and I also flashed twrp and again installed magisk. After this is where everything went downhill. I rebooted the phone and I had Android 10 installed fine, but I didnt have root access. I wasnt able to use magisk, so to get back root access, I booted to twrp and there I had the problem where my internal memory was 0mb. So I followed a guide online and was able to fix it, but I lost all internal data, so I booted my phone and downloaded the magisk zip and went back to twrp, where again my internal memory was 0mb so I again followed the same steps and this time, I flashed the magisk zip using an otg pendrive. After all the android setup process, I couldnt find the magisk app anywhere. I assumed that my phone isnt rooted and since I was almost fed up at this moment, I thought, I'll manage a few days without root. After a while when I opened netflix it says that it isnt compatible with my device and on checking online, it seems that this problem occurs when the phone is rooted. I again tried to boot to the recovery to flash magisk but now the stock oneplus recovery comes. How do I get out of this situation? I want my phone either properly rooted or even if its totally unrooted its okay. I might have messed up on many things along the way, please help me fix it.

Looks messy. I don't know the workarounds to get you through. If I was in your place, I would use MSM to reset it to factory settings, update to Android 10 as needed and then use a patched boot image to install magisk. I went that route this time as I really don't need twrp. Search xda for the exact steps to do this. Fairly easy.

I had alot of problems with the MSM tool the last time I tried to use it. Is there any other way that you could recommend me to start over with a clean slate? Meanwhile, I'll try to get things ready to try MSM tool once again.

You can try one of the fastboot stock ROMs: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/how-to/rom-stock-fastboot-roms-oneplus-7-pro-t3931424
Options for the fastboot ROMs, as I see it:
- Flash Android 9 fastboot stock ROM, root, and try to update and keep root (like you did before).
- Flash Android 10 fastboot stock ROM, and try to root by flashing patched boot image.
- Flash Android 10 fastboot stock ROM, and leave it unrooted.

I had similar issues and decided to fastboot oem lock my bootloader after upgrading to Android 10. This reset everything to stock on Android 10 and avoids the issue with Netflix for now. I may re-root at some point but the downsides of being rooted are a bit more glaring now with Android 10 (losing enterprise email for my work, worse version of Netflix, etc).
My assumption is you ran into the same encryption issue I had where the only way out was reformatting and wiping data in the process. Next time I do anything with TWRP/Root/OTA updates I'll be disabling my pin and fingerprints to see if that avoids the issue. I've had it happen 2-3 times now where internal storage is showing 0 and is encrypted with no way to enter my pin.
Just do it all over again, boot to OS install through local upgrade and open magisk, flash twrp first then install magisk OTA and reboot, that way it will go to the other partition.
