S7 screen turning on randomly, and a fix. - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Just posted this in another old thread, but thought it's worth highlighting. Noticed today that my screen would come on by itself a second or so after I put the phone down, or if I was holding it and swinging my arm as I walked. After lots of searching discovered a setting was causing it. Settings > Display > Keep Screen Turned Off was turned on. Turned it off and problem solved. No more random screen turning on. There can be other causes, but this one didn't show up in any of my Google searches, so just paying a tip forward. Cheers.

My S7 Edge started doing this about a week ago, but the setting you noted was off... so I turned it on. Maybe it's something in the last update that makes it wonky. I'll let you know if it works.

That setting being off is the default I believe. My phone didn't start turning on until after I had turned that setting on, I just didn't notice the connection since I'd changed several options, and didn't see the spontaneous turn on until the next day. There can be other causes, so may not be your issue. But keep us posted.

Screen turns on by itself.

Hey all. My Skyrocket seems to be turning the screen on by itself at random intervals. Sometimes it will turn itself off by the screen timeout set at 30 seconds but sometimes I will have to manually turn the screen off. Sometimes after turning the screen off when I go to bed I wake up in the morning to see my phones screen on. I believe an app is causing this to happen but I am trying to figure out which one it is. Instead of wiping clean and never finding the culprit I want to spend some time digging. I caught the phone in the act just recently and grabbed the logs. It happened right around 1:30am. Please see attachment for log.
I looked over the log but did not see anything obvious. Maybe someone with more knowledge can take a peek at the log and find something of value.
Thanks!
I guess I should also mention my Skyrocket is rooted with stock rom and kernel running 2.3.5.

TF700 very sluggish after waking up

Disclaimer: I searched the forums but couldn't find anything relevant.
Am I the only one whose tf700 acts really sluggish after it wakes up for a minute or two?
Is there any solution to this? It kills my main use case of the tablet (pick it up when I want to look at something in a pinch, and put it away when I'm done).
I'm on official ROM, rooter but not unlocked. This has been happening with the previous firmware versions as well.
I had the same problem for a while... most of the time I woke the tablet from sleep it'd be very sluggish.
I noticed that this happens when the wifi disconnected during sleep... it would have to reconnect and therefore all the services that required wifi would all start at the same time, throttling the system.
Turns out its the special setting in ASUS Customized Settings, "Disconnects network during sleep" that was causing this. It does exactly what it says, suspends network-related tasks when the screen goes off and resumes on screen on.
I initially turned this on because i was worried network tasks would drain my battery on sleep, but there doesn't really seem to be much of a performance difference with it on or off. So I'm leaving it off for now.

Hmm, I disabled that with the same battery concerns, but I'll give it a shot, thanks!

Also try a clean boot.
Hold down the volume down and power button when you power it on from cold. Let it go through the next screen without touching and it will clear cache automatically.
This does help as well anyway.
It's probably still quicker than most of us after we wake up..... Have you tried coffee?
Try turning off all bloatware. Mine used to be incredibly sluggish when waking up, and when I checked it turned on about 25-ish apps everytime i woke it up. Rubbish like Google Now, Talk, Gallery, etc. This slows the poor thing down to an insane level. Turned off all the random crap I would never use anyway, did a coldboot (sbdags describes the process up one post ^) and now it's instantly awake.

Screen not 100% off?

Hey there,
I just got my N5 a few days ago and I have noticed that when the screen is off, it actually is not. It's not off like in I turned the phone off, but off as in it's black but there seems to be some light still coming through. Pretty much like having a all black picture being displayed or when the Google bootlogo comes on, that kinda black. I am running Purity and Franco Kernel but I don't think that would have any cause into it.
I have tried rebooting multiple times, turned off hot word detection but still seems to be present.
I'm sure this isn't normal but if someone could suggest any solution, that would be great.
EDIT: OK, actually I figured it out just mere moments after posting this. It was an option in Lightflow to control the backlight while screen off. It was checked on.... derp. Also, there was an option in trickster for led control and I toggled that and saved and it turned the screen completely off now. Leaving this up for a helpful hint if anyone else experiences this type of issue

Always on

I am wondering if the always-on will result in not being able to carry it on domestic flights, which require all devices to be OFF! After takeoff, airplane mode or WiFi are OK - but not on takeoff/
They could screen them out with the X-ray at the gates - large phones would gt checked and if S7 - maybe no-go.
If so - would hope custom ROMs could solve that.
Just turn the phone off then what are you talking about? Always on is just a term used for the screen displaying notifications on the black screen when the device is powered on... It can be powered on and off just like a normal phone lol

CNET review said it does not turn off (" I fell in love with the S7's new always-on display, which shows you either the clock, a calendar or an image.") , and that it will display a few items like time always - or so they said. They also contracted Samsung directly on it. .

If you are using the toggle in the drop-down, long press the "always on" icon and it will give you the options you're looking for.

Mine has not been shipped yet, so i will give that a try when it comes.
This would be odd however. I leave my S4 on for several days, and see a screen like that when it often pops up, so don't see the reason for having an "always on" since it can already be handled otherwise.

Yes while the phone is powered on the screen doesn't turn off completely.. Unless you disable "always on display" your just understanding it wrong which is OK lol

This is not a factual statement. The FAA only requires that the phone be taken out of transmit mode. Airplane mode is acceptable, even for takeoff and landing.
Look I own the phone it turns off and on like a normal phone... It's just that while it's on it has a feature called always in display where when you turn the screen off a clock and notifications will pop up because it has a amoled screen they have the ability to light pixels independently which means that you can have a clock only on part of the screen and the rest be off so then you aren't using very much energy at all. So you can glance at your phone see what time it is and other cool things. It does not mean the phone doesn't turn off. You're taking the feature completely out of Context
I believe the phone is actually always on, even when powered off. I was an airliner passenger last night, had it in Airplane Mode, and then felt it vibrate in my pocket. The phone had rebooted on its own, so I shut it off completely since I wasn't sure what was going on. Later, while it was *shut off*, I felt it get warm, pulled it out and the blue indicator light was flashing, but the phone was off and unresponsive. I held the power button down briefly to reboot it, and it rebooted in airplane mode, just as would be expected had it been shut off while in airplane mode. When it came back on, it had reset the date to February 10, the battery had decreased from 52% to 25% in the two hours since I had shut if off, and the time was displayed in negative seconds (!), something like 7 million. All the weirdness ended when I rebooted it after landing and inactivated airplane mode. I'm not sure what was going on but I am definitely sure that after I turned the phone off, the notification light continued to blink, the device became warm, and it experienced significant battery drain. I therefore believe it is actually never off.
You may have thought you turned it off but didn't. You have to hit the power button twice on screen to complete the action. The first time just highlights it. I'm willing to bet you hit it once assumed it was off and pocketed it. Trust me it turns off
Murphys law: craziness can and will happen. This thread is pointless and should be closed. All phones "turn off" completely. You don't have a 'sleeper cell' for a phone, laying dormant yet on while you believe it's off. You have to really be dense to believe otherwise.

Screen randomly turning on

Is anyone else experiencing this? My S7's screen will turn on by itself as if a notification has been received, but nothing is there. I have most of the bells & whistles turned off so I know it's not that.
Any thoughts on why this is happening? Really hope it's not a defect as I just put liquid armor on it. As always, any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
If you Google it you can find several causes, and one more I just found today. Make sure Settings > Display > Keep Screen Turned Off is off. I had it on and my screen would turn on at odd times. Turned it off and problem fixed.
I have this problem on my s7, g4 and j3! And still have no clue wtf is that... Screen just turns on and nothing happens, turns off after timeout. Something with google acc sync maybe ( on ALL phones sync is turned OFF )

Several possible causes are listed in this article.

You have a broken charging port. That s why it turns on
Can't be the charging port, because it happens to me when the phone is NOT charging. It seems to have something to do with waking the screen on notifications, but there's no specific setting to disable that.
