[Help]I Un-rooted my Phone so I can run a certain app but still run into problems - Samsung Galaxy Core

Hello, as the title says, I un-rooted my phone a few days ago... I used KingRoot, and I also used the Un-Root option on their windows app when I un-rooted my phone. I also used Root Checker App and the Terminal Emulator App from Google Play to verify, the results showed that my phone is no longer rooted.
Note: I'm also very newbie and most of the time, very clueless when it comes to these Android Rooting business, so I would appreciate it as well if the answers will be newbie friendly, and I apologize as well if I'm asking to be spoonfed for the solutions; I only have very limited time, and me hunting for answers in google resulted in hours of wasted time, except on me being able to learn just the meaning of a very few terminologies, too few to be considered significant I think.
~~(Might be helpful) Details:
-The model is: Samsung Galaxy Core Duos GT-I8262, and is running the Android Jelly Bean (Android Version 4.1.2)
-For a more detailed firmware/rom info (after dialing *#1234#):
AP: I8262XXAMG6
CP (Baseband Version): I8262DXAMH1
CDC: I8262OLBBMH2
Kernel Version:
3.4.0-1322246-user

KST 2013
~~Situation:
Now the thing is, the app I am using no longer allows phones who are rooted, so I un-rooted my phone, and to begin with, I haven't really done anything with my phone being rooted, since back then I was trying to fit my games on my external SD card by installing apps which requires root... but everything I tried with my limited time didn't work even with root, so I did not bother to do anything root-related (like installing certain UI modification and such). The only thing that got installed on my phone is this KingRoot app (which I prevented from installing any other app that it offered), and is since then removed.
Now, I un-rooted my phone using the Windows App that KingRoot provided, and I even used Root Checker app from Google Play and even checked my root status using the Terminal Emulator; results are all cleared, my phone is no longer rooted.
But when I run this app, it still gives me an error code that the devs themselves provided... an error code that indicates that my phone is either Rooted, is a China Phone, or other problems.
For the first two problems; Rooted or China Phone; I'm supposed to be cleared of this, and my phone is a Samsung bought from an official dealer...
As for the third problem: one of my friends who uses the same app told me that my problem might lie on my ROM not being a "Global" one... from the Firmware info I provided, I can see an area code called 'DX' (which should stand for Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, and I am in the Philippines right now).
~~Problems:
There comes a whole lot of new problems, but first, to sum up my whole problem:
--What should I do with my phone to change its ROM or Firmware (what should I change between these two to begin with?) so that it becomes "Global" and would finally allow me to run this App (a Game), WHILE at the same time, still allows me to use my Sim Card in the country I am in right now and still being able to keep all my data intact (assuming Flashing a ROM would erase my phone's data particularly in the internal storage)?
Specific Problems:
-With my limited time, I only am able to find tutorials that allows one to flash a ROM using a Rooted Device... should I root my phone again and do the flashing then remove the root? And before that... really, what in the world should I do? (Refers to my question above on my problem summary), like, how should I flash this ROM while my device is unrooted, what should I do? (I'm really sorry for this question, but I hope someone will help me on this...)
-I am having dilemmas with backing up my data in my phone, such as my notes on the built-in Memo App, and my research said I have to use Titanium Backup... which requires a rooted device to work... can I just use this "Backup and Reset" from my phone's Settings and would still allow me retrieve my notes on my Memo App as well as my contacts and Text Messages intact after I flashed this "Global" ROM?
-I cannot seem to find a ROM that is "Global"(?) for my Smartphone Model and Android Version whenever I search google... can anyone of you who are knowledgeable enough provide me with such? Searching for it using google is not giving me any exact answers...
-I have read during my research earlier that when I flashed a ROM that is not in my country, my Sim Card would fail to work? Then what should I do to make this phone have this "Global" ROM/Firmware which will allow me to run this App, while at the same time, still allows me to use my Sim Card in this country without any problems?
-To begin with, from the data I provided:
AP: I8262XXAMG6
CP (Baseband Version): I8262DXAMH1
I see from the AP the area code 'XX' which denotes that it's Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, right? Then isn't my phone "Global" already? I'm very, VERY confused...
---
These are all the questions I have in my mind right now. I hope someone would help me with my problems, and clarify necessary things from my problem. If someone could also direct me to a tutorial of sorts, on flashing a "Global" rom that would enable me to run this App, while still making my phone's data intact and still allows me to use my Sim Card for communication purposes here in the Philippines, would greatly be appreciated as well.
Thank you all in advance, sorry for the long post too, I tried giving all the details I could and asking all the questions I could that might help pinpoint the problem as well as might help in providing me a solution that would work to fix my problem.

Zopo ZP100 (MediaTek MT6575) - ICS upgrade guide

Since there isn't much information (in English) about how to upgrade the Zopo ZP100 phone to ICS I've now done it myself (after reading a lot of Russian forums using Google Translate I finally took the plunge into the deep end of the pool and just did it).
Files needed
ICS ROM (b79):
http://narod.ru/disk/48456521001.ee...T75_h932_b79_pulid_sw 20120428-14151.rar.html
Root:
http://files.dangerd.org/pub/ZP100//zopo zp100 4.0ROOT by008.rar
Flashtool:
http://narod.ru/disk/44888871001.ee...6c3e795/SP_Flash_Tool_exe_v3.1206.01.zip.html
USB Drivers (and a flashtool I didn't use):
http://chinamobiles.org/downloads/zap/ZP100fix.zip
CWM Recovery:
http://files.dangerd.org/pub/ZP100//recovery.img
First of all: Make a note of your IMEI-number(s)
Download the files and unpack all (in seperate folders).
Shutdown the phone and plug it in via USB, Windows will search for a driver which you find in the package ZP100fix.zip (different inf-files depending on windows version).
Unplug phone, remove the battery.
Replace the recovery.img from the ICS ROM with the one downloaded seperately.
Start flashutil.
Load Scatter-file: MT6575_Android_scatter_emmc2.txt
Make sure that Options -> USB Mode is selected.
Click Download
Connect phone (still with no battery, at least I had to leave it out).
Flashing begins.
When all is done it displays an "OK window".
Now reboot the phone and when booted connect to USB again and run Root.bat from the package: zopo zp100 4.0root by008"
Follow on-screen instructions.
I did not need to install any separate Google Apps, it was included in the ROM.
Now you need to add some IMEI-numbers to your phone.
In the original ROM I could only ever see one IMEI for my zp100, so I wrote that down.
IMEI2 I took from an old Nokia I hadn't used for a few years.
Use terminal app or adb shell or whatever to execute the following (replace IMEI_1 and IMEI_2 with your IMEI's):
echo 'AT + EGMR = 1,7, "IMEI_1"'> /dev/pttycmd1
echo 'AT + EGMR = 1,10, "IMEI_2"'> /dev/pttycmd1
Update: Zopo IMEI Tool in English can be downloaded from here: http://depositfiles.com/files/wi41lcuvb (should eliminate the need for the terminal-hack above). If the system language on your phone isn't set to English the utility will be displayed in Chinese by default, so setup your phone to use English before running it.
If you want your external sdcard mounted as /sdcard (/mnt/sdcard) instead of /mnt/sdcard2 you have to replace the /etc/vold.fstab with the following:
http://www.cactuz.net/files/zp100/vold.fstab
Use root-explorer (make a backup of the old one) to replace it, then shutdown your phone and remove the battery, then plug it all back in and start again and your external sdcard shoudl be mounted on /sdcard (/mnt/sdcard) instead.
Hope this helps.
I'll report back here with any bugs etc.
To use RecoveryMod I have to chose it from the menu in MobileUncle Tools or ClockWorkMod Rom Manager, I have not been able to boot to CWM using VolUp+Power.
Some of my favorite apps can't be downloaded from Google Play Market:
Vignette
Endomondo Pro
Snowstorm Weather Widget
GPS Status
I have been able to restore them all using MyBackup Pro and they are running fine, they just aren't compatible according to Play Market.
So any app you really need is good to make a backup of using MyBackup (or Titanium or any other backup app of your choice) so you can restore it if it can't be installed using market after the ICS upgrade.
Note that all these apps can be installed fine on my other devices using ICS (HTC Desire with CM9 and Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 with CM9 or AOKP) so it's this ROM that is the issue AFAIK.
Thank you ... I'll follow up in a couple weeks
Ordered my zopo yesterday (for the second time -- waited 2 weeks from the first store (merimobiles) and then cancelled when they still hadn't shipped it. Hopefully I'll have better luck this time.)
I appreciate you posting this info and will try it out when I get the phone.
Good luck Dave,
I ordered mine from etotalk.com, got it in about a week with DHL used for shipping.
I've updated the first post with some more info in regards to RecoveryMod and mounting external SDcard as /mnt/sdcard (/sdcard).
Since I use this phone daily I will probably not experiment much with it until any new official release is available. But the current one (b79) is good enough.
There are quite a lot of crappy chinese apps (crappy since I don't know what they do and they aren't translated into a language I can understand) installed with this ROM bit they can all be removed using the normal App-menu in the system settings.
imei no.
hello, u said that u have write the imei no. of old nokia phone which u don't use. i want to know that can i also change both the imei no. as i m from india and in india only valid imei no. works, and i m planning to purchase this phone but i am afraid that if the imei no. are not according to india then it will not work so i just wanted to know that if i write my old dual sim phone imei to zopo zp100, will it work without any problem.
rohit: I can't say for sure if the phone actually reports two IMEI's to the service provider, but at least it displays two IMEI's when I check "About phone" in the sytem settings.
Sorry I can't say if it works or not in India.

ZP100 and ICS upgrade experiences
Hi Guys,
I bought the ZP100 1,5 weeks ago from etotalk.com.
After 1 week i tried to upgrade to ICS about this and Colonel ZAP's description.
My experiences with the ICS upgrade:
When i received the phone, on that was etotalk v1.0 firmware.
It is a very good customized rooted ROM, works fast and it has just some minor bugs.
The only problem was, it could only read the internal storage, when i insert an external SD card. It was strange, but i accept it programming defects.
I downloaded the official 2.3.6 and this B79 ICS, VCOM (Flash) drivers and the flash program.
At first, i downloaded the ClockWorkMod Recovery for chinese phones.
Unfortunately it is make a factory reset on the phone, but after you customize it, you can make full backup about your ROM.
IMPORTANT! Copy the backup to your computer, because the ICS ROM formatted my external SD
This is very recommended, because...
At first i installed the linked B79 ICS ROM.
The default language is chinese, but it contains english, so if you know the android, it is not a challenge to change it. It couldn't read the internal memory neither, just after format it.
It wasn't rooted, and deleted IMEI. When i tried to root (different way as 2.3.6, need USB debug mode and ADB) the Windows doesn't recognize the ADB driver. The driver wasn't in Android SDK, and i can't download it (i haven't tried it on Linux yet). For a moment Windows showed it found HTC Dream device. I downloaded HTC drivers, but it didn't work with it neither.
Without this you can't restore the IMEI.
Ok, go back to the official 2.3.6.
I flashed it back. Almost the same effects. Default chinese language, the internal memory cannot readable. I could root it and install CWM recovery back.
Basically it doesn't contains Play store, but you can install it.
The ROM full of chinese programmes and my experience was it is very unstable.
I uninstalled the chinese programmes, and installed Play store. When i wanted make a call, the phone restarts. The Google Play Store froze every time.
Finally i restore back the etotalk ROM, and i use it.
Maybe if i have time/mood i will install the official ICS, but about my experiences i have doubts with it.
p.s.: in about 30C outside temperature i used the phone (installing programmes). After 10 minutes using it sings that the battery is too hot, remove it from the phone.
Is any other better quality battery what is compatible with this phone? thanks
---------- Post added at 10:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:19 AM ----------
Hi jbctiong,
I used CWM recovery 5.5.0.4.
Just carefully, because it make a full factory reset.
And you need to insert an external SD card

Thanks for the link i will check
@vzzoli
Thanks for your experiences
What is the ClockWorkMod Recovery for chinese phones.
WHy you needed it ?
Now we can download the 4.0 official
Somebody try it ?
hello carabaothai,
I used it for backup/restore my ROM.
But you can use nandroid backup too.
Sorry for my abscence from this thread, I've been busy all weekend actually tuning a car instead of my phone
buntybauva: I've got no problems with USB Mass Storage, could you explain what problems you experience?
I made a nandroid backup of the old ROM, but I haven't used it so don't actually know if it works.
rohit: I ordered mine from etotalk.com
carabaothai:I forgot to mention that the ICS-rom I linked to (and flashed myself) is in Chinese as default, but can be changed to English using the System Settings, luckily there are icons in there so you can find the symbol for language (hint for anyone who doesn't know: It's an "A").
ICS = Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0)
I have not experienced problems with loosing network on the SIM cards.
jbctiong: I had not tried any nandroid backup/recovery yet, tested right now and it doesn't seem to be able to actually do any backup. Some mount errors for sdcard.
vzzoli: Thank you for sharing your experiences.
I agree that the etotalk-ROM is quite good, but I always want the latest stuff on my gadgets
I have not had any issues with reading my sdcard nor in etotalk-rom or in the later ICS-rom.
The ICS rom did not format my external SD. But one should always make a backup of course (I backup my SDcard before every flash I try).
One bug I found in the current ROM is that the Cam/Videocam-switch on the phone doesn't make any difference what position it's in.
I'm going to see what the russian forum says about the official release, I'm quite happy with the one I'm currently running so no real need to change, but there could be performance reasons to change or maybe something else.
I downloaded to the "official" ROM and updated my phone
I think this is the same ROM as B79, just renamed the version.
Remove the IMEI, not rooted, other MTP driver needed etc.
@cactuz:
What operating system did you use for root the phone?
I'm using Windows, and the new official ICS ROM wants different ADB drivers than the 2.3.6.
Without this, i can't root it, and restore IMEI.
Buntybauva's mass storage problem maybe that the Windows recognize the ICS phone as media device, but can't mount as usb mass storage without a third party program
vzzoli: I used Win7 32bit when I rooted the phone, used the scripts supplied in one of the links in my initial post.
When I restored the IMEI I used Linux since that is my prefered choice whenever using ADB.
I can't check right now what version because I've apparently forgot my VPN-password so I can't connect to my computer at work
Does the camera-switch work for changing between Camera and VideoCam on the new official rom?
hyy
after ics upgrade is anyone facing problem with gps lock?
buntybauva: Not worse than before, the GPS was terrible for me before as well as after (but I do get a fix after quite some time). Though some of the guys on the russian forum has modified the antenna as far as I know.
Maybe DangerD could help us out because I think he has been involved in it.

[Q] LG-AS730 -- Instructions to root

This is our first Android device: LG-AS730 – Optimus Select (for carrier Revol)
-
SCR Version: AS73010b_Revol
Software version: AS73011A
Andriod version: 4.0.4
Kernel version: 3.0.8
OUR GOAL:
Root the phone for security reasons in addition to getting rid of all the bloat and/or unwanted apps. We don’t like syncing, or the sharing and storing of our data (cloud). We do however respect open source. That said, we have never rooted, see above, “our first android device”. What is in place, if anything to accomplish our goal –without loosing functionality and/or bricking our device?
-
Our XDA search term “LG-AS730”, and “AS-730” yields no results at this point in time.
Root AS730 / Development
This method will work for the AS730.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
Be aware our phone has a locked bootloader + CRC Check, which means if you remove certain system apps, you will be greeted with a "Security Error" message on system start, resulting in a shiny new brick.
I already bricked mine, and luckily I still has a couple days left on my 15 day warranty with Revol to get a replacement ( I said it was an update gone wrong )
(After which, I found the .cab file on the LG server to hopefully restore (Haven't verified yet))
I'm currently looking into ways to remove the CRC check.
I'll be making a post soon with an attached .cab / other information on our device.
It just sucks our device has almost no documentation or development.
If anyone would like to help with development or anything, PM me.

Glad to see that my excuse works in other places xD. I do have a rooted System.img, just no way to flash it to the phone. (At least, I believe I still have the rooted system.img file). With our model, LG Mobile Phone Support Tool doesn't decompress a system.img.ext4 while flashing which is what caused my brick. I tried splicing back together a BIN file and literally ****ed the partitions.

GUIDE SGS4 GSM vs CDMA, Unlocking, Rooting,Info on XDA, Flashing,4 noobs & beginners
First off: if you find this useful, please hit the THANKS button, instead of posting thank you in the comments
Over the course of the past three months (and more specifically, over the past week), I'd like to think I've gone from complete noob to proficient android ROM flasher/ phone dude. However, it took many, many hours of searching for info scattered across this site and others, so I figured I'd give compiling all I've learned a shot, into one comprehensive thread that really covers all the stuff you need to learn from the ground up.
Will do so in the next couple 10 posts, topics being:
*Step (-1): What type of network/ phone technology does your phone use?
*Step (0): is your phone networked locked?
*Step (0.5): DECIDING YOU WANT TO ROOT YOUR DEVICE!/ Put a custom operating system on that thaaaang
*Step1: figure out what your device is- specific phone and model
*Step2: figure out how to root (gain root access to) your device looking at XDA forums
*Step3: Follow instructions, root device
*Step4: backup all your apps and app data
*Step5: Install a custom recovery either ClockWorkRecovery (CWR) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP), and do a nandroid backup!
*Step6: Choose which ROM or multiple ROMS you want to try out, and download the zipfile to your phone's internal memory or
*Step7: Step 7: flash the ROM and restore your apps!
NOTE: YOU TWEEK YOUR PHONE/ FOLLOW MY ADVICE AT YOUR OWN RISK
I just learned this stuff myself, so I thought now would be a good time to explain it, while I can still remember what if feels like to have no idea what I'm doing haha.
Before I go further, there are similar intro threads to this...for example, this one does a decent job of explaining that by modding your phone, you may void the warranty (although there are ways to restore your device to a state such that you can't tell you ever modded, it, like triangle away, etc.) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118120
I posted this here because a couple of these steps use the Galaxy S4 i9500 as an example...so if you have that phone this thread should be particularly helpful.
Step(-1): What type of network/ phone technology does your phone use?
If you are OUTSIDE the USA, 99% chance the answer to this question is GSM, meaning your phone number is attached to a little plastic sim card that you can put into/ out of your phone...you should check anyways though to be sure.
If you are in the US, you may have a phone which uses CDMA, a technology that does not use Sim cards (true if your carrier is Verizon or Sprint). Phones that JUST use CDMA are sort of "Hardwired" to their networks, making it much more of a hassle to switch carriers; plus, basically everywhere else in the world uses GSM, so if you plan on traveling outside the USA, you probably won't be able to use your phone abroad. If you have a fancy new smart phone, it may have the hardware to use both CDMA and GSM networks, (for example, all Iphones models 4s and above), so check your phone specs.
In the US, the major carriers that use GSM are ATT and Tmobile. I prefer getting phones from these guys, because I know I'll be able to relatively easily use my phone anywhere in the world, and easily switch between cheap, prepaid, contract free plans (like straight talk or ultramobile), which rent out the networks of major carriers like ATT and Tmobile.
Step(0): is your phone networked locked?
ans: This is mostly a non-issue to folks outside the US, or if you don't plan on switching your carrier, but if you plan on travelling abroad or switching your carrier, and have a CDMA phone, you have a tough road ahead that I cannot advise you on . I would suggest checking out this site and buying a slightly used android gsm phone (att or tmobile branded) http://swappa.com/ .
However, if you have a GSM phone you got in the US, your phone may be configured so that putting sim cards from different carriers in it won't give you any service (aka "locked" or "network locked"). Check by taking a friend's Sim card using a different network than you and popping it into your phone; if you have service/ can make and receive calls, the phone is NOT locked. There are probably more sophisticated ways of checking if your phone is network locked, but above is probably the most straightforward.
There are some methods of unlocking your phone for free, but if you have a newer phone it may not work. Plenty of online sites that sell you unlock codes for between $7-$25, and send the code over email either instantly or a day at most after you buy it. Definitely worth it in my opinion; one site I've used a bunch is http://www.cellunlocker.net/
NOTE: if you have your phone on a contract, you are still obligated to pay your carrier throughout the time of your contract, else you pay some cancellation fee. So be aware of that.
Step 0.5 DECIDING YOU WANT TO ROOT YOUR DEVICE!/ Put a custom operating system (ROM)
SO, now let's say you've network unlocked your awesome GSM android smartphone, and you want to travel with it to another country, like for example, India. Because you unlocked it, you can buy a cheap local Sim card and use it in your phone, fully enjoying mobile 4g data (well, more like 3.5G, using HSPA+, not so much 4G LTE in India yet, but I digress). OR, you can use a $45 a month prepaid plan where you get unlimted everything and have no contract, instead of paying $80 a month or some garbage. AWESOME!
However, let's say you got a Tmobile phone and want to use the phone's capability of being a portable wifi hotspot, broadcasting the mobile data it's getting to your computer...turns out you can't do that in India (or on cheap prepaid plans in US, for that matter). I discovered that since I was using a Tmobile branded phone, the Tmobile "stock" operating system of the phone won't let you use the wifi hotspot unless you have Tmobile's special "hotspot plan"...it also hard codes a bunch of shi**y bloatware apps on your phone that suck. Some BULLS**T, eh?
Luckily, there are plenty of free and easy ways to "root" (gain root acccess) to your phone (and plenty of resources telling you how to do so!), and install custom android operating systems on your phone, which
1.) don't have any stupid bloatware apps
2.) let you use all the hardware features of your phone regardless of carrier
The result is a more powerful phone that runs faster, uses less battery life, and is generally just way more badass. Probably the best resource for how to do all of this is the xda-developers forums (http://forum.xda-developers.com/ ) Very vibrant community, and lots of people will help...just follow the rules though, explained tongue and cheeck in the following video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmvCpR45LKA ). The main site for xda-developers is www.xda-developers.com, they also do cool vides and stuff on what's up with phone stuff. HOWEVER, if you are not careful you can mess up your phone, so that it's about as good as a paperweight (called "bricking" your phone). So just read all the instructions before you do stuff, yeah?
The following is more or less the beginning steps I did to root and install a custom ROM on a friend's Galaxy S4, which is an international model and so not network locked. The same general process could be applied to your phone as well, but again--this is only a general guide--your phone can (and probably will) have it's own exceptions to the general process. LOOK THEM UP!
Steps 1,2,3: find device model, research how to gain root, ROOT!
Step1: figure out what your device is- specific phone and model
ans: for example, my friend's phone I am setting up for him is the Samsung Galaxy S4 model i9500
**************************************************
Step2: figure out how to root (gain root access to) your device
ans: Off all the devices on xda forums (http://forum.xda-developers.com/index.php?tab=top), found my device ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4) , found the proper forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/help) , then searched in that specific forum to find the proper thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2419762 , see Q4
**************************************************
Step3: Follow instructions, root device
ans: Instructions are at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292615
NOTE: You must have the proper USB drivers installed, meaning either installing the sdk (software developer kit) from google and getting adb (android debugging bridge) set up (this is the best way to do it, really, especially if you want to mess around with phones more...tutorial on how to setup adb here http://androidcentral.us/2013/08/how-to-install-android-adb-and-fastboot-on-windows/ ) . If you can already transfer music and stuff from your computer, it may work without adb. Be sure your USB cable is not too beat up, and if possible, is the one that came with the device.
adb is very useful for communicating between pretty much any android phone and your computer. You can use it to push files on the computer through the terminal interface, even if the phone's file system doesn't show up for whatever reason on the computer when you connect it via USB ( more on that here http://log.amitshah.net/2012/05/using-adb-to-copy-files-to-from-your-android-device/ ), and a cool little program to send files from your computer to the device in a slightly more straightforward way, if you already have adb installed (http://www.xda-developers.com/android/push-files-to-your-device-with-quick-adb-pusher/)
Also, make sure you have USB debugging enabled. It should be in the Develpors options, which you may have to "activate" to see...see here http://gs4.wonderhowto.com/how-to/enable-hidden-developer-options-your-samsung-galaxy-s4-0146687/
If you are rooting a samsung device, you will probably have to use a program called ODIN. Other android devices allow you to do root through a method called flashboot. In general there are tons of ways to root devices, just make sure the one you are using has been tested and you follow the instructions exactly.
CONGRATS! you are rooted. That's half the battle. Rooting the phone will add a "Super User" app of some kind, which will basically controll which apps have access to the internal files of the phone (located on the "root" of the phone's flash drive). Some apps that are very useful for flashing custom ROMS (like ROM manager) and backing up your apps and their associated data (like Titanium backup) require root access, so you'll need to have rooted your phone first, and then when you open those apps for the first time, tap "allow" when it asks about granting root access.
some cool apps can only be downloaded if your phone has Root, like this gameboy emulator: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.codlab.src.game&hl=en
and here are some good Root apps to have, apparently
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jX4ir9r84YA
Step4: backup all your apps and app data
When you do eventually install a custom ROM on onto your phone, it will start out with little to no apps. The best way to get up and running again as quick as possible is to back up all your apps and data with Titanium Backup (mentioned above), which requires root access. Here's a great video on How to use the free version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQWoWfTA88k ....the video makes a good point in that if you are backing up your apps for a new ROM you are about to flash, you should only backup the User apps. Backing up and restoring the system data as well might cause some problems in the new ROM
While you don't need to to buy the pro version, I would recommend it--7 bucks, but it allows you to restore all the apps you've backed up much faster by letting you back them up into a zip file that you'll later be able to flash on your phone. Very useful, more on that in a bit...video talking about that here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRR5FONGJUA
Step5: Install a custom recovery either ClockWorkRecovery (CWR) or Team Win Recovery
By "custom recovery", i mean a custom version of the boot/ recovery interface, which lets you do a lot more with your device besides just restore it to factory settings. These custom recoveries will let you do a full backup of your device (often called a "nandroid backup"--this should be the first thing you do after you root your device!), as well as flash custom phone operating systems (ROMS) onto your phone; useful if you want to fully use all the hardware features of your phone, and not have the bloatware apps from the manufacurers hard-coded into your phone.
It's worth noting here that it's VERY important to install the correct version of CWR or TWRP. Usually to download CWR for your device, you can just download an app called ROM manager (again, after you've rooted your phone), which will recognize your device and then install the proper CWR version on it.
NOTE: If you have a more esoteric model of phone (like I do--the Samsung Galaxy S3 T999L, an LTE version of the S3 that came out in 2013, a while after the initial S3 launch), you may have to flash a custom recovery of a similar and more popular phone model to flash some custom ROMS (in my case, I had to flash the the Galaxy S3 model T999 version of CWR). For weird esoteric cases like this, it may be worth it to buy a useful app, ROMToolbox pro, which will let you flash a custom recovery for a userdefined device onto your phone in the paid version (it's like $5). Most times you shouldn't have to worry about this stuff, but just make sure you read any instrutions on XDA forums carefully before doing stuff.
As mentioned before, before messing around with your phone anymore, do a nandroid backup--super easy and essential if you make a mistake installing the wrong ROM or Recovery. Doing a nandroid backup will create a .zip file that contains a full "image" of your phone--all your data, apps, settings, a snapshot of your phone exactly the way it was when you took it. In creating this backup you can save it to your phone's micro SD card, or the phones internal memory. Regardless, always a good idea to save a copy on your computer too when you are done.
For the Samsung galaxy S4 i9500, looks like TWRP is the recovery to flash: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2361122
Step6: Choose which ROM or multiple ROMS you want to try out, and dl zipfile to phone
Now comes the fun part. Do some research on what custom ROM you'll want to try out. Some basic principles about ROMS:
Roms based on the Stock OS: These ROMS are based on the manufacturer firmware/ OS that the phone shipped with. So for Samsung devices, for example, these types of ROMS are Touchwiz based (because "TouchWiz" is the name Samsung has given to it's proprietary software that is responsible for a lot of the bell and whistle tricks you see in Galaxy S4 commercials, for example) These Roms are usually about 700 MB in size, and may still have some of the samsung apps installed if you do like to use them.
AOSP or AOKP ROMS:
AOSP (Android Open Source Project) ROMS are those that ship with "vanilla" android, meaning they don't have any manufacturer bloatware--they come with more or less the bare bones apps required to run the system. These ROMS will be much smaller, around 100-150 MB in size. The most popular of these is CyanogenMod, which is often referred to as just CM (for example, CM11.0.1 stands for CyanogenMod version 11.0.1). The guy who made clockworkrecovery, Koush (a legendary android developer of sorts, it seems), now works for the CyanogenMod development team ( think)
AOKP is the name of another popular AOSP based ROM. AOKP stands for Android Open Kang Project, Kanging being some jargon for stealing code and messing with it or something. Apparently it was used as a joke and then stuck, in the same sense that their mascot being a unicorn stuck (which I think is awesome haha).
IMPORTANT POINT ABOUT AOSP ROMS:
If you flash an AOSP Rom, the google play store will NOT be installed by default. In order to fix that, you'll need to flash another zip file containing the play store app as well as other basic google apps (gapps for short) as soon as you flash the Rom itself. You can find the proper gapps zips that go with the proper AOSP roms here: http://goo.im/gapps
There are couple apps that will let you download the ROM files directly to your interal storage from the app itself, like Rom Manager. However, to make sure you have the most up to date version of the ROM, you should visit the ROM's website directly.
Custom ROMS will often have a most recent stable build, and a most recent "nightly" build. The nightly builds may have some new experimental features, but may be a little buggy.
Step 7: flash the ROM and restore your apps!
So here's a pretty good short video walking through how to flash a ROM, although uses a different recovery interface besides CWR or TWRP : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxTwGwtUBbk ....this does a good job of explaining the basic idea, however--
A.)you get the zip file of the ROM you want to flash on your internal or removable SD card
B.) reboot into recovery mode (often by holding down the volume down key and power button at the same time when your power is off, but you should look up what it is for your specific device)
C.) do a Wipe or Factory Reset. THis should not wipe the data on your SD card or phone's Internal SD card
D.) Wipe the Cache or the Dalvik Cache, whatever it is called (though on TWRP, the wipe feature does both a factory reset and cache wipe at once)
E.) install from SD card the zip file containing the ROM you are going to flash
F.) If the Rom is an AOSP based ROM, install the zip file containing the proper package of google apps
G.) reboot system
Again, the above are just general steps. If you want to see someone flashing a ROM with the recovery you are using (and I would recommend CWR or TWRP), just search for it on Youtube.
Now, if you plan on restoring your apps by flashing a Titanium Backup zip file, you first want to reboot into the new ROM, and skip the part when it asks you if you want to restore your phone using your google account (you can do that later). Then reboot into recovery and flash the Titanium backup zip file. got this info here: http://www.s3forums.com/forum/galax...backup-pros-update-zip-restore-your-apps.html
And that's about it! let me know if I got anything wrong. If you do have questions, I'll try my best to answer them, but again, I've just learned all this stuff as well, so I may not know.

[Q] Who to root thsis one: Caterpillar S50, framaroot fails

Hi,
Whenever you insert a micro SD card in the device, the device the same complains or can not connect to download images, videos, music ...
The device we complains micro sd card but can not do anything with it. From the Play Store I downloaded the app "ES File Explorer". When transferring the images from internal memory to micro sd card, notice was that it must be the root device.
How to root the device, have you anything to it?
external sd-card ist useable without root
You dont need root to use an external sd-card. But you cannot write directly into the external sd-card for security reasons. Only installed apps are allowed the store their data there.
When you insert the sd-card, android put a folder named Android/Data into the root-folder of the sd-card. Apps who are modified for external sd-card use, put their own folder in there, which is writable only for this app. For instance, my navigation app store its data to the external sd-card.
If you want to copy your music to the external sd-card, you have to use a computer. The phone is mounted as external device. Then drag and drop your mp3 to the external sd-card. I have made a folder Music on the external sd and copyied my mp3 collection in there.

My original question about rooting the device is not for storing data on SD. It is more about controlling the device and be able to make a proper backup. Under my control.
So the question still is How to attack this problem. Searching leads to a lot of unusable approaches. (Mostly because they reference OLDer firmware. This firm ware is from last summer).
If more info is needed please indicate what is needed.
Hi noci2,
I've succesfully rooted my S50 with Root Genius BUT new OTAs may not work.
In my case the new update (LTE_S0201121.0_S50_0.017.00_E01) has unrooted the phone and left it crippled (root is lost, partly removed and can't be gained till now and worst thing is: I can't update/root/unroot the phone hence I'm stuck with the 0.016 firmware). Anything else works fine so I'm just waiting for a stock rom + recovery / flash tool + image of the original firmware to undo the "damage" (no root and no updates).

P.S.: I would be very grateful if anybody could support a backup image or something (one day)

New OTA? My baseband number is LTE_S0201121.0_S50_0.015.00 and a new update is not available till now via OTA (here in Europe/Germany) What is changed?
I would like to have a backup image too.
Well, that's odd. I'm living in Germany, too.... maybe it depends on your carrier (mine is o2). In version 0.016 the Cat App Store was removed (I've contacted the support and they told me that it'll be back in 0.017 with some improvements). Further LTE was optimized (in 0.016).
Summary:
0.015 - base firmware
0.016 - first update (LTE improvements and Cat App Sotre removed)
0.017 - Cat App store should be back and maybe some minor changes (size is 45,4MB) ... and I can't test it :crying:

Hi Kevin,
I am also an o2 - customer, so that cannot be the reason. I will contact the support. Maybe they can tell me whats wrong.
Greetings
Hannes
Hi guys,
I'm on 0.016 as well and it shows me I can upgrade to 0.017, but it always fails (download - reboot - after reboot there is a message in notification area, saying that upgrade failed). Do you know more about this?
Regards
I'm in Holland, no OTA available
mine only gives "server error" when explicitely checking if an update is available.
Hi herdt,
I've got exactly the same problem with the update. Seems like my "partly rooted" ROM isn't the troublemaker after all. Maybe there's a flaw in the OTA itself?
Hi!
I am in Estonia and today I got my first update (had .15). It installed successfully and now I have _0.017.00. I had only tried rooting it before with towelroot which failed.
Framaroot still shows Aragorn as only option. Towelroot fails.
Cat appstore looks the same.
Kernel version: 3.4.0-gd73c047-dirty
Hey guys!
Same problem in Switzerland. Unrooted so far (though have been desperately trying to). No OTA yet, still on 015. OTA update doesn't complain when checking for updates, just saying that none are available. Had to turn off LTE since it has been pretty volatile.

I wrote to support and asked about the OTA 0.017.00 The support-staff member wrote me back, that this update is only available via OTA, but not for all regions. The availability depends on the CID-Number which is displayed when you call the #02# (Mine is E01) When the update is available I will get a push message.
On my further askings, on which point in time I will get the OTA and about the purpose to upgrade the phone to Android 4.4.4 or 5, comes nothing concretely. Version 0.015.00 is up-to-date, wrote the staff-member, and I will get a push message. Upgrades are not decided till now.
But when it is up-to-date, why we have other users like borstie22, who has got 0.016.00 via OTA?
I think they are momentarily a little bit confused themselves. My S50 is also E01 and I get an update notification (0.017) but the support told me that 0.016 is the current E01 firmware yada yada yada ("you'll get a push message when the time has come").
Once again: I think we need the help of some clever xda-developers to unleash the true performance of this phone and it's software (Bullitt seems to be somewhat overchallenged with that).
borstie22
Got the E01 (0.015) as well, no updates so far. I'm really looking forward for it since it will hopefully solve the terrible LTE instability I'm experiencing, in general the network (voice as well) is much worse than my old nexus 4. Do you guys made the same experience or is yours stable? I already asked for a 2nd (new) SIM but got the same flakiness. I guess its time to contact support.
Edit: I just realized they don't even list the s50 in their support section nor in the contact form. Weird.
I haven't had any issues, but that support thing is a bit weird. I tried contacting them through contact form, regarding windows USB drivers to get the phone recognized for ADB. There was no response at all.
Stumbled on this thread looking for root, as It would've been Ok for me to read logs from phone directly.
Driver problem got sorted by updating SDK and explicitly telling Windows to use the generic android drivers that came with it.
That doesn't sound very promising. I just ordered my s50, should arrive tomorrow. I'll report back what CID and firmware I have and if I can update.
The LTE thing doesn't sound good at all.
So I sent them an email 2days ago late in the evening and got a reply concerning the LTE issues this morning: They basically recommend to turn LTE off which indeed improves the stability, no random blackouts anymore but general network reception (voice calls) is still beyond good and evil. My dear co-workers with other phones and LTE enabled have no problems at all (same carrier, same place, same contract). About the missing S50 info/support on their site: They're working on it. Anyway I just replied to see whats going on with the updates, lets see. Well at least they answer to support requests :good:

Lots are talking about firmware update, but what about actual root ?

Multiple malware apps preinstalled on Infocus phone?

I bought Infocus M2 phone from Tinydeal. Infocus is not so well known brand and I am bit suspicious about chinese phones, I have used Lenovo phone quite some time now but I replaced its rom in the beginning, altough how can I be sure that the rom I have been using is totally pure? Well, I can't but I have used bank applications etc. without problems.
However, I first checked this Infocus phone with Avast which reported one PUP -rated app, related to updating the phones firmware. However, after running Malwarebytes it reports three malicious apps and none of them is the one Avast reported.
Apps cannot be uninstalled since this phone is not rooted and those are system apps. Should I stop using this phone? Nice device but...
I managed to root this phone and I removed those three apps, dunno if this phone is now secure to use.

Can you share details or URL on how you rooted this phone?
I scanned mine with Malwarebytes (0 found). I'd still be interested in rooting it, though.
I bought my M2 in Taiwan through official channels, where did you get yours?

I bought mine from Tinydeal. I cannot share links because I am new user, but google infocus m2 101 and check that facebook page, Taiwan rom factory.
Basically you boot the phone with alternative recovery and then install root package, there was confusion after you leave the recovery when it asks should root permission be fixed, I tried this whole process more than once I recall answering differently to that last question, can't remember which one was correct since it asks that even when you donn't try to flash that supersu zip package
Contacted Tinydeal and asked about the malware apps. The phone works and I have now dared to use it after removing those apps, no problems so far.
Tinydeal just said that those are system apps installed by manufacturer and that I shouldn't worry, but clearly all M2 phones do not have them so I doubt InFocus did install them. Spawnflagger, does your rom have finnish (Suomi) language in it? If not, I might have unofficial rom since finnish is very often absent from phones bought from China and many times only added by seller who replaces the rom.
Tinydeal so far does not admit installing malware.

It's very possible that TinyDeal didn't do anything at all to the phone, just wherever they got the phone from, had a modded ROM. Another possibility is that an early version of the ROM had some code that scanners found as malware (false positive), and newer updated ROMs removed it. Did your phone do any OTA updates? Mine had an update as soon as I put it on WiFi, which I installed. Then after I setup Google account, there were several Google Play updates to Google Play Services, Gmail, Maps, etc. Only pointing out that it seems to ship from the factory with an outdated image, and maybe this is what modders added the Finnish language support to. Mine doesn't have Finnish though. (after updates, mine is Android 4.4.2, build # 00WW_2_260)
From infocusphones.com, seems they are targeting China, Taiwan, and India. InFocus is an American company, but all their phones are made by a Taiwanese company (but probably manufacture in China). I've used InFocus projectors before, didn't know they even had phones until a few weeks ago.
The phone did suggest updates, but because my past experience is that updating a China product via automatic updates might result in an OS without Finnish language and/or bunch of Chinese apps etc. My rom version is with "240" end so it is older, Needrom.com has "260" rom available but it says limited multilanguage and no mention of "FI". Also Avast and couple other virus scanners reported "update.apk" to be malware altough since Virustotal.com scans by using 57 scanners and only couple of them reported malware that might have been false positive.. however, I have removed update.apk. Those three apps mentioned were reported by several scanners of those 57 so I kinda believe those really were malware, also if the Twitter app really was genuine then why couldn't it be updated from Google Play? Also when looking for Cleanmaster from Google Play it showed that the apps wasn't even installed so I think there really was something about those three apk-files.

There's a ROM translation app (video on youtube) that will use Bing Translate to recompile all the APKs, removing or adding languages desired. (I haven't tried it). It might be possible to get the stock 260 ROM and add Finnish to it.
Also, another XDA thread mentioned that the Cyanogen mod supports pretty much all languages... The officially supported devices wiki page doesn't list the M2 yet, but perhaps check back in future:
I also have malware on a new Infocus phone, its model M310, purchased from Banggood.com. The malware causes the internet to redirect randomly to coo123 or Qoocc web sites, this is both with the stock browser and firefox. Also a window comes up randomly with a sexy picture, this can happen anytime, even when brownser not open. I have tried a factory reset but didnt help.
After running various virus scans it seemed the preinstalled facebook app was suspect along with smsreg app. I managed to delete these, but the problem still remains. All virus scans are now clear (malwarebyes,eset,avg,360 security). So i am at a loss what to do. There is a newer rom on needrom, but it seems this may not have gapps or rooted and i wonder if this will be infected also. Would welcome any other suggestions?
After obtaining root access I deleted those three infected apps and then went trough every app I had on the phone and deleted everything I concluded not to belong into stock Android. I had one strange app named lyc_1.apk and since Google did not find anything about it I deleted it and so on. Stock browser had baidu mentioned in its name so I deleted that also and opted to run Chrome from Google Play.
I'm not experienced with network stuff, but have you looked at your hosts-file, how does it look? You can use Root -browser and edit it, atleast if you have root permissions.
My phone displayed an ad on the notification bar which had same kind of icon like Update.apk, after deleting Update.apk it never happened again, but also I cannot update the phone trough Settings. Not big loss probably since updating may cause problems...
After these things I have used phone without problems.
I updated the phone with original firmware from infocusphone.com.
I would happily provide the links for more convenience but I was restricted from the system because I am new.
Save the zip file on the sd-card.
To install the new firmware put the phone into recovery:
) Switch off the phone
) attach phone to charger
)press and hold Volume up + power button until you get into recovery
) choose install zip from the menu
With the new firmware there is a app Dr. Safety (trend micro) that reports no malware. Using eset the app meiyanxiangji is reported as malware. I uninstalled it using settings-> apps->uninstall
I am quite happy with the Phone.
I connected the phone to my PC today I noticed that there are multiple files in the root internal storage, they are labeled like following:
as643a27-b490-4x0a-49f6-c66fdbecb5e0
Anyone have idea what these are? They are all 36 bytes and seem to contain same text as they are named.

I bought the same phone from dx.com (DealeXtreme) and had the same 3 apps show up with MalwareBytes.
I ended up getting the code from infocusphone.com. I can't post a link since I haven't posted enough.
It took a bit of trial and error to find the right file. The one I loaded was LSO-2260-0-00WW-A02-update.zip. If you copy it to an SD card and load it as described earlier in this thread, you should be set.
Malwarebytes no longer reports anything (neither does Avast). Will be looking get root next....

I downloaded the alternate recovery from Taiwan 101. It is a rar file and asks for a password when I try to extract it. Do you know the password?
EDIT: found it on another Facebook page; password is taiwan101
EDIT: Rooted successfully ... thanks Diexi
Thanks
Getting Error while rooting
Getting Error reboot failed: -1
Plz suggest i am doing as it is said in the Taiwan rom Factory

Apps cannot be uninstalled since this phone is not rooted and those are system apps. Should I stop using this phone? Nice device but...

no joke, scan that thing with multiple anti viruses from the market. if they support root , there better because they can do a complete scan. also try completely swiping the SD card clean
A big mistake was to delete the possible malware, because now we have only rumors but nothing we can definitely say about. So, you learned now that next time just backup the infected stuff or directly scan it against known antivirus sites (or attach here). But without anything it's impossible to say what could be the risk now.
As written down a fresh and clean install would be help now to make sure no leftovers are left on the system.
