Running Andy OS in bridged network mode and backing it up - Android General

I needed some of my apps running on AndyOS to search/recognize/talk with the the machines on my physical network. I checked in the VMWare player that installs with AndyOS. It turned out that the AndyOS guest was having two virtual network adapters one configured in NAT and another Host Only. As far as my understanding goes, to let guest to communicate with machines on physical network we need guest to have virtual network adapter connected in bridged mode. So I configured one and booted Andy OS. Power off those other two virtual NICs and ran the OS from VMWare. But it seems that AndyOS is not meant to run directly through VMWare. Is it so? It did not started. So I started it from the Start Andy system tray icon. It loaded only the bottommost black button bar of the Andy but nothing else. Now I have reset whatever I have done and trying it to start. But same behavior, only the bottommost black button bar loads. Seems that I have screwed my Andy OS. Is it? (1)Is there are any way to recover. I am surprised to find this since I did not do much changes and still the stuff is not working well. Now I think I should have copy pasted old stable vmdks somewhere so that I could have ran Andy from them once it gets screwed. But (2) is it possible to copy paste vmdks as say system image? Anyone tried?

[A] Mapping Network Drives using HTC's Network Plugin

I've tried using Resco Explorer 7.05/Total Commander 2.5.1/HTC's Network Plugin
For some reason i can't seem to map network drives.
In resco when i try to connect to a drive it tells me it's not accessible
In Total Commander it just doesn't connect
In HTC's Network plugin it writes: "Map Drive Failed"
-I'm using Vista on the comp i want to share folders in.
-Sharing works fine on all comps other than in my PPC (not password protected)
-It seems as not only it doesn't map the drive but doesn't acknowledge as anything but the computers on the network exist. no folders inside those computers. Thought about changing my ppc's domain but i don't know how to do that.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks
Yeah, VISTA FILE SHARING is a bit tricky! You not only have to share that particular drive / folder; you also have to check the settings in the SHARING CENTER - in addition you might have to adjust the file permissions as well.
Everything is perfect on file settings. i have a network running 3 computers and 2 laptops all sharing folders no passwords all permissions set. only thing not able to read the folders is the PPC. It finds the comps on the network but doesn't show the folders.
Did you MOUNT the drives in RESCO? You can't just click on it in the FILE EXPLORER - tap and hold, then select MOUNT DRIVE or FOLDER (depending on what you're sharing).
What RESCO VERSION did you use?
dude... i can't see drives nor folders.
i'm using 7.05
for the record, i tried looking at a winxp comp instead of a vista one.. can't see anything.
tried accessing through ip and name.. both come out with nothing..
I wish someone would help with this also. I have two computers and 1 ppc on my home network. My ppc(HTC Titan) used to be able to access both computers. Then all of a sudden it stopped working for my main computer(bedroom) with all MY files on it, but it still accesses files on my second computer(upstairs). On the main computer(bedroom) I can access the shared folders of the second computer(upstairs), but the second computer can't access the files from the main computer.I dont know whats wrong, but it seems more like a computer issue. I operate Windows XP on a Dell. The network folder used to work perfectly for me and I can't put my fiinger on what's blocking it.
This might be the wrong thread to post this issue(maybe the wrong website) but I thought I would ask since the issues are similar. If it's a ppc program for accessing the shared folders on a computer, then someone should have a How-To or a check list of how to set both up for the program to work fluently. Can somebody please post what you need to do on the computers to ensure sharability of the file systems.
The reason why this is so important to me is because I have been hooking-up my Titan since may 2008 and I am near completion. I'm totally done adding app's and the functionality of the device is superb except for this issue. Just bought a 16gb micro sdhc card and that works great. My girlfriend just ordered a seido 3500mah extended battery with the door to fit and a rubberized hard case for extended battery fit. I'm so excited about have the best phone setup of my life but I everytime I go back to this issue I get pissed off. It was all good til about 4 months ago and I don't know why it suddenly stopped working. Please HELP!!!
If the HTC Network plugin is not locating your shared files on your network, this likely suggest that it is an issue with your network settings. I suggest playing around with your security settings; however, I just recently had a problem accessing any of my shared files over any of my computers between each other and between my HTC Device. It just suddenly stopped working. I knew that I didn't change any settings myself and had tried many things to try to resolve the problem without success. I then decided to run my anti-spyware programs and Anti-Virus programs and let them run overnight. In the morning, the Anti-spyware removed several things - One was labeled as high risk and the others were low and the Anti-Virus found two high risk viruses. Everything was taken care of automatically and voila - I had no problems connecting to my shared files with my computers or my HTC Device. I ran the spyware and virus check programs again and everyting was clean.
the problem is that i can't even map the drives. i can see the comps on the network using the HTC Network Plugin but can't do anything other than that. when i try mapping a drive it tells me that i can't.. for some reason.
i removed password protection...shared the drive... nothing works.
I am assuming you are trying to connect through WIFI -
Make sure that you are actually connected to your network. My device has on several occasions connected to my neighbours wifi rather then my own - results in not being able to access shared folders
Through HTC NEtwork plugin you are exploring the computer for the shared folders right? You say you can see the computers - when you click the plus next to the specified computer in the network plugin are you getting any results at all there.
Make sure you don't have (I don't know if this is what it is called) MAC address filter or password. One of my friends has an open WIFI Network but has MAC Address filter which stops you from actually being able to use the network. You can connect but that is it. You wouldn't be able to surf the internet at all through WIFI either if this was the problem.
If it is none of these, Maybe it is a Windows VIsta problem - I don't know, I have XP
Do you have trouble connecting to other shared folders on other peoples WIFI networks also? (people who have XP)
-XP doesn't work either.
-i can see the comps, so i'm obviously connected to the network.
-i have mac filtering - see previous statement
-wifi works - see previous previous statement
dunno what to do.
Maybe something with your WIFI Settings on your device then?
Maybe you can review your settings on your device - Anythign that you think might be causing the problem - Describe it here, I will check my device settings (even though different devices - should still be the same - and will let you know if there are any differences. I must go eat dinner right now, but will check back after supper and bathing my daughter and putting her to bed. in a hour and a half two hours from now...
Set your desktop to support NTLM instead of just NTLMv2.
That way I got shared folders working with the HTC Network Plugin and my Vista desktop. Unfortunately some HTC apps (like HTC Camera) only expect your device to have two drives (internal ROM and flash card) so when you mount a network drive, they can't access your flash card.
Well, i can start searching, but if you don't mind, could you tell me how to do that?

I wish it worked for me too, but when I get to the "Group Policy Object Editor" I'm getting lost. I don't see that anywhere. Is my computer missing important files? I'm using windows xp. I hope I don't have to restore the whole computer to get the file sharing working. But if I gotta do it I will.the phone see's the computer, but no file sharing. It is that important to me to share files between my phone and computer. My home setup is sweet, and my phone is an extension of it.
Any Other Ideas
So, I have gone through and done everything suggested here. Lan Authentication, created private network, reconnect, everything I can think of...nothing seems to work
Does anyone have any further ideas about what could possibly work to create a LAN over WIFI?
Hardware:
Vista Business, Mogul 6.1 stock ROM 5.2.19208 and Folder Plugin build 30468.
DONE SO FAR:
Have created an adhock private network...connected to it on my device no problem. But when i go to search for my computer in network plugin under the browse menu it thinks about it and in the end doesn't see anything...
so, at wits end...I know I am new but most of the info over is fairly beyond my level I am certinaly a lurker and no info over at PPC Geeks with solutions...either way alot of the stuff over there comes from over here so thought I would see if anyone had some suggestions.
thanks for the help,

USB to PC connection missing and Wifi problems

I have searched extensively and can't find answers that work for me.
I have tried several of the latest 6.5.1 and 6.5.3 roms on my Wing (which is HardSPL'd) and almost all of them have the same issues:
1) My USB to PC icon is gone in Settings\Connections. Did MS move it somewhere else? I'm having Activesync issues and think this is why, but can't change the "advanced network setting."
2) Wifi... I tap on it to turn it on or off, and more than half the time, nothing happens. It'll either stay on, or stay off. Ideas?
I had some of the same issues with some older 6.5 roms as well. Do I need to update/downgrade some of the individual device drivers or something? I'm at a loss.
Thanks, and sorry if this repeats anyone else's posts.
I am also having similar issues. I HardSPLed my wing and after I did that successfully I decided to update my wing with SIMPLY EVERYTHING 6.5.1 BUILD 23616 so I flashed it on my wing. It's installed fine and is working but now my wing doesn't connect via active sync to my PC (same PC i used to HardSPL my wing and flash this build). The USB cable is connected firmly as it does charge my phone, just fails to connect the phone with the PC via active sync.
I would really appreciate if someone can either provide a fix for this issue on this thread or tell us a way to somehow flash the device with another ROM (from storage card somehow).
Thanks in advance.
Sort of solved...
This is the one I found that works best on my Wing:
Search forums for "Illconcepts Current Projects" (won't let me post a link)
(the 28014 Titanium at the top of the page)
It is flashed from SD card like most are now (nice!).
Occasionally (usually after soft reset) the first time I try to turn on wifi it will fail to start the wifi, but it works after that until next soft reset. Have had no connection issues with ActiveSync.
Big plus of this rom is that it's fast, is lean and leaves lots of program space. I added Office and such, but on the SD card, so I can still run Skyfire (just about every other rom I tried didn't have enough program memory free to consistently run Skyfire after I installed all my standard programs).
Only down side I see (if this is one?) is that it has old PIE, not newer version, and PIE doesn't work properly at all. Only problem this has caused me is making it difficult to download/install java apps easily, as Opera Mini always seems to give me "invoke errors" when I try to download files, and since Skyfire only seems to be detected as a "full" browser, it won't pull up mobile versions of most sites, thus won't get access to the java app links, etc. Would be nice to hear of a solution for this (preferably how to fix Opera Mini's "Opera Invoke Error")
i guess this wil help u all coz it worked for me

all you guys just need to open network cards under connections in settings. just tap the Sdio wlan wirelss adapter and then select name servers and copy the dns and alt dns as the same as in your desktops. Select ok and restart your phone..
it should work just fine...
all the best..
uh...no...
Doesn't have anything to do with DNS settings. DNS settings doesn't affect whether or not the wifi card turns ON or OFF. It affects connections. This is different, dude.

Sprint & HTC Mogul

I have an issue here that is absolutely driving me up a wall. This is further compounded by the fact that the system this is happening to, the owner is leaving to go on a trip in 3 hours. I MUST fix it by then.
This part has nothing to do with my problem, this is some background info:
I personally use an HTC Imagio, flashed with a custom ROM, and obviously on Verizon's network. I tether it and sync it with a Windows 7 x64 Ultimate laptop at home.
The issue at hand: I have an HTC Mogul on the Sprint network for a higher up exec at my company that uses it with a Lenovo ThinkPad running Windows 7 Enterprise x64.
I cannot:
Get Generic RDNIS driver to install - at all -. I have combed through every post, every thread for the entire day relating to this issue. It is further compounded by the fact that the update for Windows 7 and the Windows Device Center update will NOT install. I also tried my prior mentioned HTC Imagio on the computer, it also generates a splatted device in the device manager, that not even Windows Update can load.
I have tried running the system in a local machine admin account to bypass UAC (and even disabled UAC altogether) and even checked safe mode for duplicates/issues.
What am I missing here? I can't even get the phone to sync its data, nevermind getting the tethering to work, which is what she needs the most. The phone is able to go into the Windows Mobile connection where it shows the USB connection type, and the connect button at the bottom - it'll connect, but it will drop the connection within 10 seconds.
Does *anyone* have ANY ideas where I can go from here? I have already rebooted both systems, but unfortunately a file reset is not an option here, and I'm less inclined to believe it would since my own phone has the same issue on her laptop.

Try Virtual XP (Windows XP image inside Windows 7) and install ActiveSync in there. You may be lucky enough to get it to work. I had a similar issue and fixed it that way...
Yeah, I've pretty much arrived at the conclusion that there is something on the system that is blocking the install of the WMDC, and short of a Windows reload, I can't get it to work. I'd considered XP mode, but this user won't know what to do with it, it adds an extra layer of complexity that she frankly doesn't care about, and won't use.

[Q] VirtualBox on Ubuntu

As much as I would like to post this in development as I'm sure it'd get more attention and hopefully find a solution, this is better suited here by technicality...
I'm on Ubuntu 11.04, I have a VirtualBox running Windows XP. I have the Samsung drivers installed on both machines, but we will focus primarily on the Windows machine. I have managed to get windows to fully read my Charge through USB. I can transfer files to and from it.
Here's the problem. Because Heimdall won't correctly flash for the Charge at this point in time, I need Odin. I do not have access to a full blown Windows device so let's just not clutter this thread with those recommendations. This is strictly to find a fix for Odin on my VirtualBox.
Odin will recognise my phone when it is on with USB debugging on. Problem here is that the phone isn't recognised in download mode. Also, when Odin see's the phone, it see's it on 2 separate com ports even with the phone plugged into 1.
So there in is my problem, Odin can find my Charge just not in the problem way. Any suggestions?

OK, I am no expert on flashing ROMs or anything like that really so I do not know how to fix your problem; BUT, as a person who does a lot of work in tech support I can offer some suggestions for a workaround.
First, since it seems you are set on using linux, why not try a different VM manager, such as VMWare rather than Virtual Box. Again, I'm no expert but maybe VMWare will handle USB connections slightly differently than Virtual Box. Don't know, just saying.
Second, and this is what I would do, since you clearly have a copy of Windows XP and the space for it on your hard drive, why don't you just dual boot XP and Ubuntu? Then, you could get a free ext4 reader so could continue to access your files in Ubuntu from Windows. The way I see it is, why spend all this time this time trying to figure out this very specific problem when I believe this solution would work quite well.

While dual booting is probably my last resort it is an option I've had in mind.
I tried VMWare with no success and think this is more of a usb recognition problem but I'm not certain.
I don't want to dual boot mainly because my hard drive is "limited" as is, and seeing as how this is only a laptop, battery life with Ubuntu is much greater which is something I needed since I am a full time student. If I can't find a solution soon I will probably just build a new desktop and run dual boot with it. Just trying to get a temp solution for the time being.
I do appreciate your advice and will probably end up going that route, just looking to see if there is an easy solution as it seems I'm so close to fixing my virtual box issue.
This can be closed. Wiped my drives and did a dual boot setup.

That's the way to go. I too prefer Ubuntu, but there's just too many things for my work and my hobbies that work much better in Windows for me not to have a native copy running on my machine. Unfortunately, suspend/resume still is a little finicky on my Toshiba laptop, so I end up having to run Windows if I anticipate I'll be opening and closing it alot...
Another person I met on irc had issues with ubuntu and his toshiba. Thankfully my dell is a champ.
I only needed odin for this phone so 30gb allocated space will be fine. With school I can use all the stuff that comes with ubuntu which is free and it will revert to Microsoft office files. Plus my laptop runs better lol
I know that you wanted to get it working, but I would avoid ever trying to flash a phone from within a virtual machine environment, even if the phone does get picked up. One drop in communication between the virtual USB/host driver/hardware and you could be staring a very expensive paperweight. While a drop in communication is possible even in a non-virtual OS, you're adding another point of failure to the process by trying in a virtual machine, and one that is also quite possibly the weakest link in the entire chain.

Like you said, just better this way.

[Q] Default Linux users and USB Mode

I've tried a lot of different means but ultimately I want to make sure of something. In regards to Linux, in particular debian, does everyone else have issues with actually keeping the galaxy s 4g connected in USB mode? Here is a rundown of what happens.
1.) Plug in phone and start USB mode
2a.) If left idle all is well and the device stays connected.
2b.) Else the phone disconnects itself during data transfers.
Here are more details to my setup
~ I've experienced this problem with Fedora 14 >, OpenSuse, Ubuntu, Linux Mint
~ Currently using debian(latest version squeeze).
~ Phone is running FB VahallaBlack with Subtly Modified Stock with CWM5 + Voodoo Lagfix
~ USB Debug mode is off
~ There are no tweaks active to my knowledge.
That's all the information that comes to mind, if anything else is needed please let me know and I'll post it. I dual boot windows and debian and I'd rather my phone work on both OS and not just one.
I use Ubuntu and I have this same issue. I just began either syncing over Dropbox or plugging my sd card directly into the computer. I've tried Googling the issue, but was unable to find a solution. If you don't wanna do either of these, and you hate switching to Windows just to transfer **** (as I did), you should perhaps try running a virtual instance of Windows and transferring the files on that.

Sad to say I've tried all of that. Virtual instances of windows are worse from my experience as there were time where the VM actually found the phone and there were times it didn't, mostly didn't. Best possible thing I see myself doing is using a SD converter to do the transfers. What I don't understand is that A LOT of this tech today uses linux in some way or another. Hell some of them have linux controlling the most basic level functions with another software to handle UI on top of it. Yet when it comes to actually working with linux through said UI you get issues like this. Thanks for the reply, I'll continue to check back here for most of the day but I'm assuming most of the replies will be the same.
