Verizon post paid sim in prepaid phone work around - General Questions and Answers

My son broke his iphone and I am unwilling to pay for another. I bought a verizon prepaid phone for $30. Switched the sim out and the phone works but no data or text. They want me to pay $30 and activate the prepaid phone for a month before they will unlock him. Is there any work around here? Thank you.

Confused About Buying No Contract Phone?

ive bought many unlocked phones in the past but this is the first time ill be buying a phone carrier locked no commitment price, what does it mean when they say activation is free with a new plan, i need to activate the phone before i can use it?
AT&T Captivate
no one can asnwer this question guys?
I have a Vibrant with TMO that is "no commitment." I paid full retail price. I don't have a contract, but i do have a plan (read: bill) i have to pay each month.
the two year contract gives a discounted price on the phone, but they jack up the price on the monthly bill. In the long run, it's cheaper (for me and the vibrant) to pay full price for the phone because of the reduced monthly bill....that i can stop anytime without fear of ETF.
Edit: do you have a plan, now? if so, you're going to pay an activation fee. if no plan, no fee. either way, a new plan or activation fee is needed.
what the heck is the activation fee, does the phone not work out of box? and yes i have a plan
cant just pop the sim in?
i'd imagine not. try it. how much is the act. fee?

what is this thing, i tried the live chat on ATT and they dont help for anything, they told me to call att instead
I think the activation is just for a new sim card. If you already have one, you're good to go, as long as the phone is unlocked or works on that network.

Do I have to pay AT&T monthly if I buy on Amazon no-contract?

It costs $549, and I want just the phone itself, no business with AT&T what so ever. I wanted to buy it from AT&T store, but they said I can't buy just the phone at no-contract price, I still have to open a wireless account and pay monthly service. If I order the phone from Amazon, I don't have to pay anything else to AT&T? Will it turn on without a simcard (or it already has dummy sim without service)?
No Need
You don't need any business with AT&T. The phone turns on great without any sim & if you buy it on Amazon for the full price 500$ something, your free to do whatever you like. Worst case scenario, buy a dummy sim from AT&T @10$ max if your phone requires a sim when booting.
You welcome.
Cool, thanks a lot!
!? I've bought about 6 phones from several AT&T corp stores, never had an AT&T plan, ever.

[Q] Tmobile monthly 4g $30 plan

Has anyone been able to get the tmobile monthy 4g $30 plan from walmart without actually having to buy a phone at walmart?
If so, how?
Thanks!
This how i did it
I bought 30 dollar pay as you go plan in the store and put 30 dollars in credit on an account. they gave me a sim. I then called customer service and asked for the 30 dollar plan 5gb data unlimited text 100 min. I girl tmobile store told do it like that. The plan is only suppose to be for the walmart phones. I got it on galaxy nexus.
Simple, order the sim card by T-Mobile. Its one dollar. After that buy the $30 dollar card at Walmart(can be online)
Once you get your sim card you can insert it in the phone, then follow the instructions on the card or email if you bought it online. That's what I did. Monthly I just deposited $30 dollar to my T-Mobile account to refill my account. I been doing it for about 4 months

They used to just let you activate it on-line after using any pre-paid SIM card without having to do anything fancy. Not sure if they're still doing that since they've changed things around.

[Q] T-Mobile plan sign-up problems

When I decided on getting a Nexus 5 and Moto G for my mom and I, I was planning on Solavei. Unfortunately they decided to jack up their prices, so I am looking at T Mobile now.
A few problems I am running into (with both phones)
1. Both phones are so new, so it is not an option to choose when signing up on their prepaid site. Do I just choose a different phone and pop the SIM in anyways? If so, which phone.. the Nexus 4?
2. There appears to be two options. One is to sign up on T mobile with two lines. I would like to choose $70 and $30 plans for me and my mom, totaling $100 for the N5 and Moto G. When I look to sign up this way, it wants to charge me for a SIM "starter kit". If I choose to use their prepaid site, (prepaid-phones.tmobile....), the SIM is free but there appears to be no family plan option, so there is no discount on the second line. Is there a way to get the best of both worlds? AKA, Can I get a free SIM and a discounted second line?
I realize this is not the Moto G forum but information on both is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
With prepaid your going to pay each line as if it's sperate. Prepaid sim won't work with postpaid. You might be able to get your started kit free if you went to a kiosk or store and activated them there on the family plan.

I think you are off getting going postpaid. What features does your mom use? Calls? Data?
For $100 you can get Unlimited everything for you and UNL Calls, Text, and 500MB of data for your mom.
If you go to a T-Mobile store with your devices they usually waive the Sim fees. Also easier to pay one bill than paying your line and then your Mom's prepaid.

I suppose I got the two mixed up. The SIMs are not interchangeable.. where i could purchase this one for free http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/...ro-SIM-Card-Activation-Kit-No-Annual-Contract and then bring it into the store and have them use it for postpaid? I was hoping to avoid the sim card fee.
I am looking to do one line unlimited everything, and one with the 500 MB data for my mom. Thanks for the replies!
I just ended up finding this article.... saying they DO work. http://www.pocketables.com/2013/11/...-work-postpaid-plans-tablets-theyre-free.html
Anyone have any experience with this? Or any downside to getting this over the postpaid sim...?

Does anyone know which option is correct?

I need an emergency backup phone today as my old phone died. I am traveling and staying in a small town and am able to buy a Samsung J1 for $50 at a local Wal-Mart. I heard it was decent for the price. The catch is it is a boxed Verizon prepaid phone.
I am currently on Verizon unlimited subscription plan. I thought maybe I could take my sim from my old phone and put it in the prepaid phone and presto it would work. I still wanted to make sure before I spent $50.
I got online and several people on a couple different forums said that you can't just place your old sim in and if you do the phone is hotlined and locked immediately by Verizon
.
They said you have to pay $30 prepaid fee for 1st month and then phone IMMEDIATELY unlocks and you can use it on your regular subscription plan with your old phones sim.
The Verizon rep at 1-800 and at the local store told me yes you have to pay for the first month but also WAIT 30 DAYS before it is able to use (on your regular plan).
Which is it?

I'd go with what the Verizon rep said, waiting 30 days sounds right to me.
