Barcode to pc scanner app for android - Other Tools & General Discussion

Good day. I don't know if I'm posting in the right place but here goes. I need some help. I am new to app development and I honestly have no idea where to start. I have an app idea and haven't found one like it. It is a app that I really need for myself and would make my life so much easier if it was developed so I thought why not make it myself. I have no real programing knowledge other than basic vbs, basic cmd and basic html coding. This is the plan for my app.
At work we get parts in for our components that need repairing. All the parts have barcode on them so I thought why not speed up my parts checking process by using these barcodes that contain the part numbers to check my parts. The plan is for there to be a computer based program that uses a QR code to link the andriod app and the pc app together over the wifi or Internet. Then on the app you have it using the device camera to scan the barcode in and pass the barcode text to whatever place you have pointed your mouse at in keystrokes much like vbscript sendkeys method. After it scanned there must then be a popup that allows you to enter quantity as some of the items are small with 50 to 100 making scanning that many times just time consuming then after that is complete you can scan again. Also on the scan screen I want the option to manually input the barcode if the barcode has trouble being read. How I see it working is that at he end of the barcode it sends a Tab then after the quantity it sends a Enter. The idea is to use excel and formulas then to calculate parts received from parts outstanding. If someone could be so kind as to assist me or even just help me get starred I will really appreciate the help. Thanks in advance. I do not aim to make money from it just see a flaw that can help me and possibly many other people out there in the world.

I'm no expert. Just a hobbyist. But here is what i do if i have a similar need. You can create a local web server. Have your android app send data to the server. And the server will process the data. And send back data to your mobile app. I usually use apache for this but if you use vbs it might be better to use windows server. Hope this helps point you in the right direction.

Since you are using the forum to promote your business (related as it may be) I hope you are ready for some criticism.
Your survey doesn't cover this so I'll post it here.
1) How secure is this application? You open up access to peoples PCs over the internet and I assume you use login + password (not just the URL) but do you encrypt traffic etc? I found no mention of this on your site.
2) 30 euro is a pretty steep price for an app that does about half of what other free solutions offer in this filed. Take LogMeIn for example - it gives you full control or Orb for video streaming.
3) Continuing the previous it seems that your app only allows delivery of content but not actually managing it on the PC or uploading it back to PC.
(or did I miss something)
All in all I have to say its not a bad idea but 'undercooked' and over priced in my opinion.
Best of luck with your buisness anyway.
Levenum,
Thanks for your response. We are open for all criticism, it is exactly the purpose of this survey (and not the implied promotion, which is nice ).
In response to your questions:
1. If so desired you can use a login & password combination. Your login name is related to your IMEI number. You can set up a four digit pin code as password. We do not send out the URLs to other people. If you would like to share your files we send out copies by email.
All traffic is secured.
2. We take your advice into consideration.
3. We are working on a new website which provides visitors with more information. Just one question. What do you exactly mean by 'managing it on the PC'? Delete, move, print and more of these options or something else altogether?
Yes, moving / deleting / renaming files and generally organizing your media on the PC by remote is what I meant.
Also lets say I just recorded a video clip or taken a picture with my phones camera, can I use your app to upload it to my PC? (This would be useful for people traveling as they can not sync the device and might run out of storage space)

Hi, Levenum
Mobile Media Center currently does not support uploading files from mobile devices, I think we will come up a solution very soon.

It sounds like a nice offer, but why they are asking for my phone serial number? somehow I really don't feel safe to give the number away.
IMEI Number is used for issuing licenses, meaning, this software can be legally used on your mobile phone.
24access, it would be nice if you can give the technical details on how this works. From what I've read, it seems that you install a software onto the PC, which act as a 'backdoor'/server which gives you/MMC access to the file contents. So, it seems like
"My PC" ---> "MMC Center" ---> "My phone"
As what I can see, there are 2 possible 'holes'. One is at "My PC", which some one may able to have the MMC-software-installed-on-MyPC security compromised. And, another one would be at your "MMC Center" which seems to be collecting files from all over the place, and possibly be compromised credit card center?
I would understand that it is in user's convenience NOT to have software installed on their phone. However, it is also in user's consideration on the possibility that this "MMC Center" may have access to all their file contents. And at the final end of the process, since there are no software required on the phone, what sort of secure line are you using? SSL via HTTPS?
ANYWAY, sorry for being a bored. It's a job thing, as being a computer science guy, we have these natural ability to find things which most users won't probably even consider (e.g. the unsecure emails people use everyday).
And yes, people won't be very happy giving out their IMEI number. You might want to try another method.

[Q] Scanning Drivers License Barcodes

This is a re-post from DroidForums.net (http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-development/125479-scanning-drivers-license-barcode.html)
By "thekhaz"
It sums up what I am looking for. My particular interest is for Ohio drivers licenses. Any input would be appreciated.
So ever since the barcode scanner came out with Droid I have looked high and low every couple of months waiting for this program thinking it was inevitable, but no go. Not sure if the the software can actually even read it let alone go about creating a program to decipher it but there would be a huge market for an app like this. ID scanners at minimum are like 800 bucks, usually closer to 1200 even more. Imagine if any bouncer could just use his phone to scan out of state ids or anyone he/she questioned.
Does a program like this exist yet, if not i cant imagine it be very hard to program because the barcode scanner is already suppose to scan 2d barcodes (IDs use 2D barcodes) one would merely have to write program that deciphers it. Merely takes raw data and only display lets say name a birthday which is different part of data depending on state. I already have info for a majority of states from my time not to long ago as a college kid trying to make some extra cash ill let you use ur imagination on that. Would anyone be interested in working on a program like that, I would actually be willing to pay pretty well or arrange for programmer to have majority rights to program, I just think it would be a very popular program on the market

Check these guys at IDScan.net
we recently purchased their VeriScan app
and it does what we need.
We can swipe a drivers license and the app decodes the info

[Q] Where do I start?

OK people
I’m pretty good with IT and the written word but have no coding experience whatsoever. I want to develop a phone App (both iPhone and Android).
The app will include Google mapping technology, Facebook check in capability, account sign up and message system to fellow subscribers and push notifications triggered by geographical location and in app advertising.
I know there are different web based services and software for App development. But I am totally overwhelmed over where to start and I’d rather not learn to code from scratch.
If anyone could point me in the direction of any required reading/research, web tutorials or lectures I would be most grateful. Or if there is software that would allow me to develop the app easily. I don’t really like to idea of signing up with an online service in case I want to move the app to a business model in the future.
Alternatively any affordable services that allow me to keep full control of the app even if I unsubscribe could work.
Thanks in advance
Rumski
This will be useful for you..

Basic N00b advice needed

First, I hope this is the right place where I am posting the question. I am in the fire service and I would like to create an app for droid, that would read a basic text message and display a lookup information from a xls document For instance, the text message would display the address for a call. The app would use the information from the text and display a map page number and a short text phrase (running route to the address). I.e the text message says : House Fire: 101 Main Street. The app would look up that address in the excel document, and display the attached information, which would be 101 Main street: Left of Central Ave, Right on Martin Ave: Map 305. Any ideas on where to start? Or maybe app like this exists already? Thanks in advance!
Hi, it's a very broad question so it is very hard to answer. The answer depends on so many factors:
- Do you have any experience programming?
- Have you experience designing/developing mobile applications?
- Do you specifically need to use xls documents? (what you want is better suited to use built-in maps app. i.e. take the text from the text message, parse it a bit for keywords if you want different actions to be keyed in on, and then pass a search string to the maps app).
If you have no experience with developing mobile apps, I'd suggest going to google and searching for simple mobile development languages and frameworks. Stick to ones which use scripting languages. Or you can go to freelance websites and pay someone to make such an app for you. If its very simple, they shouldn't charge you more than a couple hundred.

From what I am understanding here, you want something that will disperse Calls in the form of app alerts, with the two main purpose being alerting the recipient of the location, and also of the directions to said location... Yes?
to start with, figure out what exactly needs to be done and why and put it in writing
The first step would be to write down exactly what you're looking for this app to do and any other pertinent requirements (needs to work offline, speed requirements, hardware to support, etc.).
What you're describing so far sounds like a service provided by major online map providers such as Google, Bing, etc. If you have an address, you just key it in as a destination, and then if you have the fire station pre-filled in as your departure point, you'll get map directions generated right there. Is this what you're interested in? If so, then you can just open a browser when you receive a message and go to Google Maps or to the maps app directly from the phone and do it there.
If some of the details that you've provided are hard requirements (text message being an incoming SMS, .xls data store, precise data requirements, zero downtime tolerance, very fast response times, etc.) then the best place to start would be finding an acquaintance who can write phone apps (maybe some kid from a local high school or college?) and explain/show what you want done to them in detail and have them estimate how complex this work would be. After than you either hire that person to do the work or pressure them to do it for you as community service .
If you don't have the right people in your network or they're unwilling to do the hard lifting, then you should reach out to a contractor and have it done commercially. It's the same approach: explain what you need done exactly, then get an estimate, etc. Based on what you describe, it shouldn't be too complicated or expensive.
I don't recommend you do it on your own unless you have tons of free time and/or are specifically looking to learn how to write apps. You'll end up spending a lot more time than this project costs on the market, and if you're not really into it, it might seem quite frustrating for what seems like should be a very simple thing.

Android to PC text based communication

Hi!
(Disclaimer: I do not have a degree in CS or SE yet, and my knowledge stems from high school and some freelance work. I have coded a few programs and an app before, Though I might have some methods / ideas that would look horrible to you. If such is the case - Please tell me! I am still learning and might sometimes go a certain rout which works but is completely "wrong" regarding coding standards. (For instance: I have a note taking app which saves its content in a text file, which i am pretty sure is not how any other app works)).
My question:
I am in the process of coding an Android app, which needs as a part of the service it provides to send certain messages (text only) to the app users PC (one way).
I would like to use some sort of central service, since in my understanding of routers and IP i'd have to have the user set up port forwarding if his PC is behind a router (which'd be complicated for most users) (If this is untrue and using an IP based solution would be better/simpler then please explain how so).
The first solution i have devised (Which i would very much like to avoid) is to use a third party service (such as Pushbullet) as a means to transfer the messages without paying for any services myself. This is less convenient since (to my understanding) I'd have to name the app "X for Pushbullet" and might have some legal trouble, and also would be dependent on a third party.
The second solution I've thought of would be to host (as in pay monthly for hosting on a server) an online DB with usernames and messages (the message table containing a column for what user sent the message as well), and a local program (written in C# or Python probably) on the target PCs which searches the DB every X interval for new messages for X username. This seems like it would work, though probably isn't the most graceful way to go about it.
Would really like to hear how a more experienced programmer would tackle this problem!
Thanks a lot in advance!
