Home button accessibility shortcut does not work anymore - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My brother is visually impaired and he relies on both TalkBack and Google Now voice commands to use his Samsung S6.
Unfortunately these two accessibility tools is somewhat conflicting as Google Now is crippled when TalkBack is enabled. For example, it's is not possible to retrain the voice model when TalkBack is activated. You can't even enter Google Now voice settings with TalkBack enabled. (If there is a fix for this, I would very much like to know).
It is easy enough for my brother to turn TalkBack off, but since he can't see what he is doing, he can't turn it back again.
There used to be a shortcut to accessibility settings such as TalkBack by quickly pressing the home button three times. It worked until recently but not anymore.
The option is still in the accessibility menu, it just doesn't work.
Is this a known problem with Android 6 or Samsung 6, and is there a fix for it?
The 3x home button camera shortcut is disabled so it's not because that is interfering.

How about long-press power, then touch with 2 fingers?

This doesn't work well. It's difficult for him. The three quick home button presses worked extremely well, but it stopped working around a month ago. Maybe due to a software update.

[Q] Using Camera Button to Wake Phone

I wanted to assign the camera shutter button to wake up the phone. I've used other lockscreen apps like Go Locker, Live Screen, and Magic Locker and they all allow the volume rocker to wake the screen, but not the camera button. I then tried the app "buttonremapper" or something like that that I found on xda. It didn't work.
I found this folder:
/system/usr/keylayout/
with the files:
AVRCP.kl
cpcap-key.kl
edison-keypad.kl
evfwd.kl
omap-keypad.kl
qwerty.kl
usb_keyboard_102_en_us.kl
Everywhere I saw:
212 Camera
(all but the first two files)
I changed it to:
212 Camera WAKE_DROPPED
(and added this to cpcap-key.kl)
It worked...but not always. Every now and then, it would not wake up with the camera button (especially if I hadn't had the screen on in a while). Any ideas? Is this a foolish endeavor?
Also, the Search button sometimes does not bring up the search function (long-pressing doesn't bring the voice search) right after unlocking the screen. The haptic still works, but the search doesn't pop up. The ability returns if I press the home button first. The same goes for the camera hardware button not opening the camera app but working after I press home first. This was happening even before my modifications and only intermittently.
My mod is not at all important, but I'm curious why it doesn't work all the time. I'm not sure if it's related to my buttons not working regularly, but I suspect it does.
I am using Go Launcher and tried a variety of lockscreen apps. I just did a factory reset last night to see if it fixed it, but it didn't. I reloaded a minimal amount of apps. I am using the stock camera at this point (I didn't reload camera zoom fx--but it had the same issue before the factory reset anyway). Could this be related to an app or is there something deeper at fault? I doubt it's a hardware defect since it is corrected by touching the home button.
If you think you have an idea but need more info, let me know. I appreciate any suggestions!

Using tasker to switch talkback on or off via press of a key etc

Hi. I am trying to get my head round this tasker. I have learnt it to some extent, and can create profiles / tasks.
However, what I am trying to do (its for my blind wife really) is create a simple toggle that can be placed on the home screen or a toggle via a button press / combo to turn talkback on or off.
I have got as far as getting to the accessibility page with a keypress, but I`d like to actually TURN talkback on or off, instead of just getting to the accessibility screen (where I have to go into talkback and turn it on/off - hugely inconvenient if you need to go back and forth in apps).
I have tried other apps like Home2 shortcut which... gets me to accessibility screen
Anycut... accessibility screen
Xshortcut (really hoped this would work as it can "record" your actions... but get a permissions error)... no dice.
Can anyone PLEASE help me to accomplish this, it would hugely benefit the blind community, this is a big fail on googles part IMHO
Thankyou
Matty
I`m unsure if google allows this?
Me to
Hallo Matty
I've run into the same issue in trying to set up Talkback on my dad's phone. I see there was no response to your post. Did you find a solution elsewhere by any chance?

[Q] voice to text button disappeared

just got my Nexus 5 and really digging it so far.
The one thing I seem to be missing is the voice input key on the stock android keyboard, i still have the option checked for it in settings but all that is in its place now is a comma and with a hold down press just the settings button. it really bums me out i used to use that feature daily on my 4. so this morning i did a factory reset because it was there as i was setting up the phone. what it seemed to me was when i went to the input settings and disabled vibrate on keypress it disappeared and won't come back. Has anyone else had this problem or know how to bring it back?
You need to tick Google voice typing in language and input as an input option as well
you are on the ball! that did it! thanks for helping out a fool so quickly
You're welcome. I keep pressing it by accident because I'm used to the comma key being there on the cm keyboard on my N4.
Only just discovered that pretty much all the symbol keys have long press options, even though they don't display any subset options like the number keys.
This also fixed it for me! Cool

Google assistant with gestures

Hi , did anyone figure out how to get google assistant with gestures or with another shortcut?
Have not figured it out either. Had to switch to navigation buttons, setup google-assistant and go back to gestures. That way i can still trigger it by voice.
a long press on the fingerprint scanner would be an obvious choice for invokining a Google assistant, Is that something can be added with a 3rd party app.?

I haven't received the Phone yet but i can recommend Button Mapper for you to try.
let us know if you try that please =)
I'm using Nova and mapped swipe up with assistant. works great
Button Mapper does not register back fingerprint reader touch as an event it can act on.
Restorted to swipe up with Nova.. I just need to rewire my brain to use it instead of long press. I wish Nova allowed a long press on the docker app shelf icon could be assigned as the gesture. It would be a bit better.

Hi guys, I used Button Mapper to map a double tap of the down volume button to Google Assistant and a double tap of the up volume button to invoke split screen, works great without interfering with the normal use of the volume buttons. Only thing I've noticed is I'm not seeing the "What's on my screen?" button but that must be something to do with Assistant...
Edit: Turned the nav bar on to check, when I open assistant with a long press of home I get the what's on my screen option, but not when I open it with the double tap from volume button, bizarre!
Ok google it's out of the question?

Not sure what you mean but OK Google (even while Screen is off) works perfectly fine on OP6

That was exactly what i was mean... The op wants to know if there's another way to activate voice assistant with gestures... What i want to say is that "Ok google" is working perfectly so there's no need to shortcut or other things.. :good:
I really don't know how but I have opened Google Assistant a few times now with gestures activated. I really want to know how. Does anyone have any idea how?
I just say "hey google...set my alarm etc"
Works fine, i think maybe people forget they can trigger it with their voice - im really enjoying gestures and dont think i could go back, enjoying more screen real estate too.
Using voice does not allow for accessing the "whats on my screen" button
After removing Google app from system, I lost the access to hotword activation. Assistant won't come up even after all settings I did. Finally ended up with Nova Launcher gestures. Two finger swipe down for assistant (installed assistant app separately for it)

Not for me for some reason. Keeps saying it doesn't recognize my voice when music is playing. Normally, Google stops music to take over the microphone and do that familiar beep, but Spotify just keeps playing and no beep comes. Don't know why.
Hey everyone, so if you have root, you can use gravitybox to map the assistant app to the fingerprint scanner. I've got mine set up this way and it's been working well.
If you use Button Mapper, instead of choosing Assistant there's an option for Now on Tap. This gives the 'what's on my screen' option when Assistant pops up

OnePlus 8t not able to set default search assistant

I have the EU version of the Oneplus 8t kb2003. 100% stock locked etc. I depieced yesterday to wipe the phone as there was a number of things I wanted to sort out. So wiped it and set everything back up. I normally have alexa as my default voice assistant, when I long press the home button. But this time around when I go to change it in settings to alexa, nothing happens, it just stays on Google. Even if I select none it still launches the Google assistnat.
I tried it on my samsung work phone and it switches with out any issues, none Google or Alexa. Any ideas why I am not able to change the default assistant? I can set press double tap power to launch alexa, but that is not as nice as long press home.

Nah I dislike rooting phones now. I used to be all over it, You could make your phone so much better by rooting it. I remember the nexus 6, I rooted and even built my own version of android, but cant be bothered with the hassle in my old age!

Buggy OP phone is buggy.
I tested it for you and my OP 9 Pro (US T-Mobile version) "works" the same way. Changing under Assist and Voice Input has no effect on the home button long press. Even if I change from Search Assistant to Voice Search, it always uses the Goog.
Like you, only thing setting the default search assistant seems to affect is long pressing the home button. If I change it to Alexa, then it will use Alexa for that.
Maybe it used to work and you were "grandfathered in" to that setting so it didn't affect you until you reset the phone. Add that to the list of annoying, but not deal breaking, OP bugs.

Yes it is the long press home button I am trying to change. I would like to long press home and ask alexa to do X. But I dont seem to do that. I even used the msm tool and went back to the original version 11.0 that came with the phone, but nothing at all very odd.
Not a deal breaker, but as you say it is really annoying. The 8t was supposed to come with alexa hands free built in as well, but I never got it to work.
