VS987 Root Method - is it Legit? - Verizon LG G5 Questions & Answers

I posted this question in the overall LG G5 forum as well.
I came across this link for how to root the Verizon LG G5 (VS987).
I don't think it's legit though because it references this link for unlocking the bootloader. It claims the unlock method is for "all variants," however I believe it only works for the T-Mobile LG G5 (H830).
I'm just wondering if anyone has tried this or knows anything about it.

I don't believe its for our phone variant. Our phone variant doesn't have the "unlock oem" option in the developer settings. phone. So by default its for all other variants but ours I assume.

Rooting and Unlocking Bootloader

Sorry if I missed this post somewhere. Was considering buying the Moto G from either Boost or Verizon prepaid. I see numerous ROM's for this phone, but was wondering if this phone is still able to be bootloader unlocked/rooted for either carrier (I ask STILL because I got burned on the LG L9 encrypted bootloader on newer models). I did see posts about paying some guy in china to unlock it, is there an alternative? Thanks all!

[Q] Can a T-Mobile G5 be used on Verizon?

Since I understand the G5 is carrier unlocked and the T-Mobile version allows unlocking the bootloader, would it be possible to get a T-Mobile G5, unlock the bootloader, install TWRP, etc. and then put a Verizon SIM into the phone?
There's gotta be a catch somewhere, right?
If it's like other Verizon phones, you would only be able to get basic phone service at best and no data. Just because it's unlocked doesn't mean Verizon has to allow the device to work completely. They only have to allow emergency services to work.

TMobile LG g5 on metropcs

I've seen conflicting reports that to use a TMobile LG g5 on metropcs the phone doesn't need unlock and that it does? Can anyone confirm this
Yes it does need to be unlocked though its pretty simple to have it unlocked. I believe you can just call tmobile and tell them the situation. That it's a used tmo phone or whatever and you'll be leaving the country and would like an unlock code sent (that's what I told them anyway).
The phone doesn't need to be unlocked. I am using now LG G5 H830 from T-Mobile and I am a metro pcs customer. They use same network. No unlocked needed.

Can spectrum mobile pixel 3a xl be unlocked. OEM unlocking is grey in settings.

I just bought the device from ebay seller who listed it as unlocked but it's locked to spectrum. I was wondering if anyone has been able to unlock the device from this carrier. Any help is appreciated. (SS548)

I bought mine directly from Spectrum, it had to be paid off and I had to call Spectrum tech support to unlock it (Sim lock?). After that, I could follow the procedure to unlock and root. Note: I unrooted and relocked as I found little value in being rooted at the moment and preferred to be able to use google pay, which is blocked if phone is unlocked (will likely go back to root after Google stops supporting the phone and will load lineageos, if I still have the phone).

So the only way to unlock the bootloader is to have the carrier sim-unlock the device first? I'm kinda surprised there isn't an exploit to get around that.

You shouldn't be surprised considering Verizon Pixels 2, 3 ,4 don't have exploits.
Who knows what OP is actually talking about. His title is talking about bootloader unlock, while his post is talking about carrier unlock.

How easy is it to root LG phones?

I have a question that I don't want to just get Google's opinion on.
How easy is it to root most LG phones?
I have tried to root my brother's LG G7 ThinQ, but had no luck getting the bootloader unlocked. I like the idea of LG for myself, but since I was not able to root my own phone (Samsung Galaxy S8 Active) I really want the phone to be rootable. My last phone (Moto G5+) was rooted, and I loved root so much.
I've just been looking at the list of phones LG says are bootloader unlockable, and just seeing if I can find any on eBay.
Here is that list from LG: https://developer.lge.com/resource/mobile/RetrieveBootloader.dev
Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place I couldn't figure out how it works yet.
Your best bet is to get a LG phone not designed for USA markets, but usually cost more. There are a few exceptions such as ones that are not carriers branded. I am also looking into LG V50 (US Carrier unlocked) but no luck getting the bootloader unlocked.

Okay, that's a good idea. I was noticing that most of the phones on the list were european models. Let me know how it goes with the V50.
I moved this to q/a for you might help you find the answer you need.
